The minirhizotron technique has provided agricultural scientists the opportunity of observing rhizosphere activities without destroying root structures. Nonetheless, the laborious analysis of the data still prohibits its wide applications. Advanced image understanding techniques are needed to derive satisfactory descriptions of plant root networks in an efficient and robust way. The paper presents a plant root image analysis system designed as a blackboard architecture with a hierarchy of data abstractions. Important properties of plant roots are used throughout the processing and multiple sources of information are combined to resolve uncertainties in image interpretation. Experimental results from some stages of the research are given which support the overall processing scheme.< >

Pulsar candidate selection identifies prospective observations of modern radio pulsar surveys for further inspection in search of real pulsars. Typically, human experts visually select valuable candidates and eliminate radio frequency interference or other noises. Recently, machine learning methods are adopted to automate this task, which saves human labor and makes it possible for processing millions of observations efficiently. Considering the number of positive training samples are relatively too small and the cost of incorrectly labeling a real pulsar candidate as negative is large, we propose a novel hierarchical candidate-sifting model by emphasizing the cost of incorrect prediction of positive samples and assembling multiple classifiers trained with different weighting parameters. Experiments on three pulsar selection datasets demonstrate our proposed method improves the pulsar-sifting performance a lot according to several standard evaluation metrics.

Based on the human auditory system for spatial localization theory, we proposed a spatial localization of multiple sound sources using a spherical robot head. Space sound vectors recorded by a microphone array with spatial configuration, are used to estimate the histograms of spatial arrival time difference vectors by solving the simultaneous equations in different frequency bands. The echo avoidance model based on precedence effect is used to reduce the interference of environment reverberations which provide the strong interference for phase vectors especially in small indoor environments. To integrate spatial cues of different microphone pairs, we propose a mapping method from the correlation between different microphone pairs to a 3D map corresponding to azimuth and elevation of sound sources directions. Experiments indicate that the system provides the distribution of sound source in azimuth-elevation localization, even concurrently in reverberant environments.

In classification of multi-source remote sensing image, it is usually difficult to obtain higher classification accuracy. In the previous work, the modeling technique for the remote sensing image classification based on the minimum description length (MDL) principle with mixture model is analyzed theoretically. In this work, experimental studies are performed for investigating the modeling technique. With intensive experiments and sophisticated analysis, it is found that the developed modeling technique can build a robust classification system, which can avoid classifier over-fitting training data and make the learning process trade-off between bias and variance. Meanwhile, designed mixture model is more efficient to represent real multi-source remote sensing images compared to single model.

Shadow detection in high spatial resolution remote sensing image is very critical for locating geographical targets. In this paper, we proposed a new shadow detection method using Affinity Propagation (AP) algorithm in the Hue-Saturation-Intensity (HSI) color space. Because the pixel matrix is a large-scale matrix, if we apply AP algorithm directly on the raw pixel space, it will be computation intensive to calculate the similarity matrix. To solve this problem, we propose to divide the matrix into several blocks and then applying AP to detect shadows in H, S and I components respectively. Then, three detected images are fused to obtain a final shadow detection result. Comparative experiments are performed for K-means and threshold segmentation methods. The experimental results show that higher detection accuracy of the proposed approach is obtained, and it can solve the problems of false dismissals of K-means and threshold segmentation method.

At present, in the field of pixel-level image fusion, researchers tend to treat each pixel independently, which destroys the relationship between the images to be fused. In view of this defects, this paper aims to propose a method for multi-scale image fusion based on Genetic Algorithm (GA) under the guidance of Hidden Markov Model (HMM). This fusion method is set on the following principles. First of all, the wavelet transformation (WT) of the two images to be fused will be conducted. And then establish HMM for the fusion coefficients from high to low in descending hierarchical order. Finally, guided by HMM, the author applies GA to searching hierarchically for the optimal fusion coefficient. With this method, the best fusion effect will be achieved. This method take good advantage of the correlation information between the images to be fused so as to improve the fidelity and accuracy of the fusion. Given this, the author makes an empirical analysis on this fusion method, which proves to be feasible and effective. ©, 2015, Binary Information Press. All right reserved.

In order to investigate the performance of visual feature extraction method for automatic image annotation, three visual feature extraction methods, namely discrete cosine transform, Gabor transform and discrete wavelet transform, are studied in this paper. These three methods are used to extract low-level visual feature vectors from images in a given database separately, then these feature vectors are mapped to high-level semantic words to annotate images with labels in a given semantic label set. As it is more efficient to depict the visual features of an image by the feature distribution than to resort to image segmentation technology for semantic image blocks, this paper is going to find out which of the three feature extraction methods performs better in image annotation based on the distribution of feature vectors from the image. The performance of three different kinds of feature extraction method is fully analyzed, and it is found that discrete cosine transform method is more suitable for Gaussian mixture model in automatic image annotation.

Thermal swipe sensor is one of the technologies behind many of today's fingerprint sensors. This paper presents a new direct Fourier-based algorithm for performing swipe fingerprints registration to subpixel accuracy, where the fingerprint image differences are restricted to translations and uniform changes of illumination. The method is based on the extension of the well-known phase correlation technique and is able to estimate large translations of swipe fingerprints with pixel and subpixel accuracy. Excellent experimental results have been obtained for pixel and subpixel translation estimation of swipe fingerprints. And experimental data show that the algorithm has less time consumption and more robustness against noise and superior registration precision. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

In this paper, we proposed a visual position calibration method using colored rectangle signboards for a mobile robot which is designed to work in a room environment. The rectangle signboards are placed in several known positions. Using Canny algorithm to detect the edge of color area to calculate the vanishing points in the image of the signboard, it is possible to obtain the relative direction and distance between the signboard and the robot by a single image. Experiments of position calibration were conducted. The results showed this method is effective and the errors between the set up positions and the experimental results were about 1.5 degrees and 3 cm in an array position.

As a kind of powerful anti-counterfeiting device, diffractive optically variable image (DOVI) has been developed and widely used in information security field. However, the identification of DOVI today by bare eyes is not reliable. In this paper we investigate the recognition of DOVI with machine learning method, and five kinds of algorithms, namely quadratic discriminate analysis (QDA), linear discriminate analysis (LDA), regularized discriminate analysis (RDA), leave-one-out covariance matrix estimate (LOOC), and Kullback-Leibler information measure based method (KLIM) are applied to the recognition of DOVI. Considering both time cost and correct classification rate, KLIM classifier exceeds others.
