Stroke and heart attack, which could be led by a kind of cerebrovascular and cardiovascular disease named asatherosclerosis, would seriously cause human morbidity and mortality. And the carotid artery of intima-media thickness (IMT) is a key indicator to the disease. With the development of computer assisted diagnosis (CAD) technology, Ultrasound imaging, being real-time, economic, reliable, safe, and now seems to become a standard in vascular assessment methodology especially for the measurement of IMT. This review is an attempt to discuss the clinical relevance of measurements in clinical practice at first, and then followed by the challenges that one has to face when approaching the segmentation of ultrasound images. Secondly, the paper is presentation of common used methods for the IMT segmentation and measurement. An overview of summary and future perspectives is given in conclusion finally.

The analysis of the carotid artery wall is of paramount importance in clinical practice. Especially, the intima-media thickness is a risk index for some of the most severe acute cerebrovascular pathologies, hence, an accurate segmentation of the different layers of the carotid artery is needed. IMT is usually manually measured on longitudinal B-mode ultrasound images. In the past ten years, many computer-based techniques for intima-media thickness measurement have been proposed to overcome the limits of manual segmentation, but almost all of them require a certain degree of user interaction. In this paper we proposed a novel approach for the completely user-independent segmentation of the common carotid artery wall. Our algorithm is designed for the extraction of the intima and media layers of the distal carotid wall in ultrasound images. It is based on integrated approach consisting of common carotid artery region identification, contour initialization with threshold segmentation, intima-lumen segmentation with Snake, and media-adventitia segmentation with GVF-Snake that enables the automated tracing of the carotid walls. The acoustic impedance's difference is employed to locate common carotid artery region. Finally, the characterization of the algorithm in terms of segmentation error was evaluated with a set of 40 common carotid artery ultrasound images and compared to the segmentation traced by a trained operator. Experiments showed that a mean error lower than 1.3 pixel both on the intima and media layers was obtained, which is comparable to that obtained by means of operator dependent techniques.

Vega has been widely used in Virtual Reality (VR) field. Vega infrared (IR) module can implement IR simulation, but Vega IR imaging simulation's general approach does not apply to large-scale scene's infrared simulation problem. This article deeps into large-scale scene IR image simulation through Vega infrared module based on visible image, the scene's corresponding Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data and targets' 3D model. A real time large-scale IR simulation system is successfully designed and realized in this paper. At the aspect of image classification, a coarse to fine k-means clustering method based on the consistency of image color is proposed. The proposed automatic texture material mapping method based on the development of Vega TMM tool provides a fast and convenient way for large-scale scene's IR simulation based on Vega IR module. And finally, results of the large-scale scene infrared simulation show the effectiveness of this method.

Interactive object segmentation is widely used for extracting any user-interested objects from natural images. A common problem with many interactive segmentation approaches is that the object segmentation quality is degraded due to inaccurate object/background seeds provided by the user. This paper proposes an iterative adjustable graph cut to efficiently solve this problem. First, object/background seeds are initialized based on the object segmentation result obtained with the user-specified scribbles as the interactive input. Then, an iterative seed adjustment scheme is exploited to correct inaccurate seeds and extract new suitable seeds via graph cut, in which the balancing weight between energy terms are adaptively updated to protect stable seeds and speedup the iteration process. Finally, suitable seeds are obtained and graph cut is used to segment the objects. Experimental results demonstrate the better segmentation performance of our approach even if user provides rather rough seeds.

A saliency model based on wavelet transform and visual attention

This paper presents a novel wavelet transform saliency model to detect salient objects. In this model, a saliency map is generated by combining orientation feature maps obtained from wavelet transform of different scale images derived from the same image. Then, the order map of a saliency map is obtained by using Fourier descriptor, which could be used as a guidance to process the most important objects. Experiments indicate that this saliency model is robust to noise and superior to other saliency models in the literature.

The time complexity of the adaptive mean shift is related to the dimension of data and the number of iterations. The computational complexity will increase proportionally with the increase of the data dimension. An approximate neighborhood queries method is presented for the computation of high dimensional data, in which, the locality-sensitive hashing (LSH) is used to reduce the computational complexity of the adaptive mean shift algorithm. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can reduce the complexity of the adaptive mean shift algorithm and can produce a more accurate classification than the fixed bandwidth mean shift algorithm.

This paper aims to design a wearable terrain recognition system, which might assist the control of powered artificial prosthetic legs. A laser distance sensor and inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors were mounted on human body. These sensors were used to identify the movement state of the user, reconstruct the geometry of the terrain in front of the user while walking, and recognize the type of terrain before the user stepped on it. Different sensor configurations were investigated and compared. The designed system was evaluated on one healthy human subject when walking on an obstacle course in the laboratory environment. The results showed that the reconstructed terrain height demonstrated clearer pattern difference among studied terrains when the laser was placed on the waist than that when the laser was mounted on the shank. The designed system with the laser on the waist accurately recognized 157 out of 160 tested terrain transitions, 300ms-2870ms before the user switched the negotiated terrains. These promising results demonstrated the potential application of the designed terrain recognition system to further improve the control of powered artificial legs.

A New Technique for Multispectral and Panchromatic image Fusion

In this paper, a technique is presented for the fusion of Panchromatic (PAN) and low spatial resolution multispectral (MS) images to get high spatial resolution of the latter. In this technique, we apply PCA transformation to the MS image to obtain the principal component (PC) images. A NSCT transformation to PAN and each PC images for N level of decomposition. We use FOCC as criterion to select PC. And then, we use the relative entropy as criterion to reconstruct high-frequency detailed images. Finally, we apply inverse NSCT to selected PC's low-frequency approximate image and reconstructed high- frequency detailed images to obtain high spatial resolution MS image. The experimental results obtained by applying the proposed image fusion method indicate some improvements in the fusion performance.

A new method for image denoising based on the free distributed hypothesis test threshold (FDR) and the non-sub-sampled contourlet transform(NSCT) is proposed in this paper. This method firstly acquires the free distributed false discovery rate hypotheses test in statistics to set the threshold in the NSCT domain, and then removes the noise through soft threshold function, which doesn’t depend on the length of signal. The experimental results show that the proposed method can more effectively reduce Gaussian noise and improve the peak value signal-to-noise ratio in the remote sensing image; Meanwhile, this method utilizes the shift invariant of NSCT transform to inhibit the pseudo Gibbs distortion effect, and integrally preserves the texture and edge etc.. details’ information of the image, thus obviously ameliorate the visual effect of the image.

This paper introduces the concept of discrete multidimensional size function, a mathematical tool studying the so-called size graphs. These graphs constitutes an ingredient of Size Theory, a geometrical/topological approach to shape analysis and comparison. A global method for reducing size graphs is presented, together with a theorem stating that size graphs reduced in such a way preserve all the information in terms of multidimensional size functions. This approach can lead to simplify the effective computation of discrete multidimensional size functions, as shown by examples. © 2011 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
