Fast robotic unloading of piled deformable box-like objects (e.g. box-like sacks), is undoubtedly of great importance to the industry. Existing systems although fast, can only deal with layered, neatly placed configurations of such objects. In this paper we discuss an approach which deals with both neatly placed and jumbled configurations of objects. We use a time of flight laser sensor mounted on the hand of a robot for data acquisition. Target objects are modeled with globally deformed superquadrics. Object vertices are detected and superquadric seeds are placed at these vertices. Seed refinement via region growing results in accurate object recovery. Our system exhibits a plethora of advantages the most important of which its speed. Experiments demonstrate that our system can be used for object unloading in real time, when a multi-processor computer is employed. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

A Hybrid Motion Compensation De-interlacing Approach

Motion compensation de interlacing is expected to be better than linear techniques; but all the block based motion compensation de interlacing methods cause block artifacts. The algorithm proposed in this paper is concerned with reducing the deficiency of motion compensated interpolation by using adaptive hybrid de interlacing methods. A spatio temporal tensor based approach is used to get more accurate motion field for de interlacing. Motion vector is assigned for each position with pixel precision; the block artifact is reduced significantly. To deal with the artifacts introduced by motion compensation when the motion estimation is incorrect, linear techniques are considered by adaptive weighting. Furthermore, directional filter is adapted to preserve details and the edge discontinuity could be eliminated greatly. Our approach is robust to incorrect motion vector estimation.

Towards an Ontology-Based Multi-Agent Medical Information System Based on the Web

This paper described an ontology-based multi-agent knowledge process made (MAKM) which is one of multi-agents systems (MAS) and uses semantic network to describe agents to help to locate relative agents distributed in the workgroup. In MAKM, an agent is the entity to implement the distributed task processing and to access the information or knowledge. Knowledge query manipulation language (KQML) is adapted to realize the communication among agents. So using the MAKM mode, different knowledge and information on the medical domain could be organized and utilized efficiently when a collaborative task is implemented on the web.

An algorithm for contour matching is presented in this paper. It is implemented in two steps: firstly, bottom-up, corners are matched, the matched corner points guide line segment matching, and then the matched line segments guide contour matching. Line segments are grouped with the signature function defined in [10] from the extracted contours ofimage pairs. Secondly, top-down, with the computed signature functions of the matched contours, the contour points are corresponded by modifying the initial matching from line segments. The novelty ofour approach is that (1) features are incorporated, and the matching is implemented in two steps (bottom-up and top-down), thus dense correspondences along contours are acquired. Disadvantages such as the sparseness from only point correspondences, the inaccuracies from only line correspondences, and feature loss of correspondences along epipolar lines are avoided;(2) unlike the conventional way ofmatching along epipolar lines after rectification, signature functions developed in [10] are used to characterize the contours so that the matching is implemented along contours. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

Under the analysis of classical decoupling methods, a new kind of decoupling method is proposed based on kernel methods. We consider the application of support vector regression and kernel ridge regression in multivariable decoupling design. Simulation results are presented to show the multivariable control system adopting the kernel method compensator can decouple the coupling effects among those parameters. A comparison of support vector regression and kernel ridge regression in decoupling performance is also discussed. The method is relatively simple and is easy to implement All these characteristics make the decoupled control system easy to use in a practical environment.

Video object (VO) is an important concept in MPEG-4. For objects can be easily manipulated without visible distortion, the copyright protection of video objects becomes an important issue. This paper presents a watermarking scheme for video objects. Different from other methods, the proposed scheme employed inertia ellipse to achieve fast synchronization recovery in case the object was manipulated. Shape adaptive DCT and visual mask were combined to embed the watermark into the arbitrarily shaped object, which was designed to achieve the trade-off between the invisibility and the robustness. Experiments show that our algorithm is robust to object manipulations such as rotations, translations, scaling and lossy compression. Our scheme can be easily incorporated into the object-based coding framework of MPEG-4. © 2002 IEEE.

A new method based on MLE-OED is proposed for unsupervised image segmentation of multiple objects which have fuzzy edges. It adjusts the parameters of a mixture of Gaussian distributions via minimizing a new loss function proposed to implement image segmentation based on the image's local spatial information and global intensity distribution properties . The loss function consists of two terms: a local content fitting term, which optimizes the entropy distribution, and a global statistical fitting term, which maximizes the likelihood of the parameters for the given data. The proposed segmentation method was validated by simulated and real examples Its performance in the experiments is better than those of two popular methods. © 2002 IEEE.

An algorithm for the automatic construction of a 3d model of archaeological vessels using two different 3d algorithms is presented. In archeology the determination of the exact volume of arbitrary vessels is of importance since this provides information about the manufacturer and the usage of the vessel. To acquire the 3d shape of objects with handles is complicated, since occlusions of the object's surface are introduced by the handle and can only be resolved by taking multiple views. Therefore, the 3d reconstruction is based on a sequence of images of the object taken from different viewpoints with two different algorithms; shape from silhouette and shape from structured light. The output of both algorithms are then used to construct a single 3d model. Results of the algorithm developed are presented for both synthetic and real input images.

Classification and reconstruction of archaeological fragments is based on the profile, which is the cross-section of the fragment in the direction of the rotational axis of symmetry. In order to segment the profile into primitives like rim, wall, and base, rules based on expert knowledge are created. The input data for the estimation of the profile is a set of points produced by the acquisition system. A function fitting this set is constructed and later on processed to find the characteristic points necessary to classify the original fragment. The one we propose is based on B-splines or bell-shaped splines.

Kernel principal component analysis (KPCA) as a powerful nonlinear feature extraction method has proven as a preprocessing step for classification algorithm. A face recognition approach based on KPCA and genetic algorithms (GAs) is proposed. By the use of the polynomial functions as a kernel function in KPCA, the high order relationships can be utilized and the nonlinear principal components can be obtained. After we obtain the nonlinear principal components, we use GAs to select the optimal feature set for classification. At the recognition stage, we employed linear support vector machines (SVM) as classifier for the recognition tasks. Two face databases were used to test our algorithm and higher recognition rates were obtained which show that our algorithm is effective.
