In the medical diagnostic computed tomography (CT) systems, the x-ray tube usually emits photons with a polychromatic spectrum, resulting in beam hardening artifacts in the reconstructed images. Although the bone correction method is extensively used to compensate for the beam hardening artifacts, its performance crucially depends on the empirical choice of a scaling factor. To overcome this shortcoming, here we propose two adaptive correction methods, which utilize the Helgasson-Ludwig (H-L) consistency condition to determine the optimal scaling factor and the corresponding coefficient vector. Our numerical simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Combined Trojan Y Chromosome strategy and sterile insect technique to eliminate mosquitoes: Modelling and analysis

Sterile insect technique has been successfully applied in the control of agricultural pests, however, it has a limited ability to control mosquitoes. A promising alternative approach is Trojan Y Chromosome strategy, which works by manipulating the sex ratio of a population through the introduction of feminized Y Y supermales that guarantee male offspring. A combined Trojan Y chromosome strategy and sterile insect technique (TYC-SIT) strategy is modeled with ordinary differential equations that allow the kinetics of the female population decline of mosquitoes to be evaluated under identical modeling conditions. The dynamical analysis leads to results on both local and global stabilities of this combined model. Optimal control analysis is also implemented to investigate the optimal mechanisms for extinction of mosquitoes. In particular, the numerical results affirm that the combined TYC-SIT enables near elimination of mosquitoes. The conclusion has great significance for pest controls. © 2021, CC BY.

Multi-level graph convolutional network with automatic graph learning for hyperspectral image classification

Nowadays, deep learning methods, especially the Graph Convolutional Network (GCN), have shown impressive performance in hyperspectral image (HSI) classification. However, the current GCN-based methods treat graph construction and image classification as two separate tasks, which often results in suboptimal performance. Another defect of these methods is that they mainly focus on modeling the local pairwise importance between graph nodes while lack the capability to capture the global contextual information of HSI. In this paper, we propose a Multi-level GCN with Automatic Graph Learning method (MGCN-AGL) for HSI classification, which can automatically learn the graph information at both local and global levels. By employing attention mechanism to characterize the importance among spatially neighboring regions, the most relevant information can be adaptively incorporated to make decisions, which helps encode the spatial context to form the graph information at local level. Moreover, we utilize multiple pathways for local-level graph convolution, in order to leverage the merits from the diverse spatial context of HSI and to enhance the expressive power of the generated representations. To reconstruct the global contextual relations, our MGCN-AGL encodes the long range dependencies among image regions based on the expressive representations that have been produced at local level. Then inference can be performed along the reconstructed graph edges connecting faraway regions. Finally, the multi-level information is adaptively fused to generate the network output. In this means, the graph learning and image classification can be integrated into a unified framework and benefit each other. Extensive experiments have been conducted on three real-world hyperspectral datasets, which are shown to outperform the state-of-the-art methods. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Since the DC-coupled interface between the driver and the laser diode makes it impossible for the conventional drivers to work with low power supply, an output stage has been proposed. A novel APC can suppress the output average optical power and extinction ratio within ±0.3 dBm and ±0.4 dB(-40°C to 100°C), respectively. The initialization time is not more than 0.6 μs because the fast binary search algorithm is incorporated into the APC. The burst-on delay and burst-off delay are less than 5 ns and meet the requirement of PON system. The chip is fabricated in TSMC 0.8 μm BiCMOS process and occupies an area of 1.56 mm × 1.67 mm with a power consumption of 105 mW.

An efficient generic architecture for two-dimensional discrete wavelet transform (2-D DWT) with line-based method is proposed with using lifting scheme, in which the parallelism of four subbands transform in lifting-based 2-D DWT is exploited. The proposed architecture is designed to generate 4 subbands coefficients concurrently per clock cycle that :an perform a 1-level decomposition of a N/spl times/N image in approximately N/sup 2//4 working clock cycles, which has faster throughput rate but requires less hardware cost compared 10 the designs reported in previous literature.

3D EAGAN: 3D edge-aware attention generative adversarial network for prostate segmentation in transrectal ultrasound images

Background: Segment prostates from transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) images plays an essential role in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer. However, traditional segmentation methods are time-consuming and laborious. To address this issue, there is an urgent need to develop computer algorithms that can automatically segment prostates from TRUS images, which makes it become the direction and form of future development. Purpose: Automatic prostate segmentation in TRUS images has always been a challenging problem, since prostates in TRUS images have ambiguous boundaries and inhomogeneous intensity distribution. Although many prostate segmentation methods have been proposed, they still need to be improved due to the lack of sensibility to edge information. Consequently, the objective of this study is to devise a highly effective prostate segmentation method that overcomes these limitations and achieves accurate segmentation of prostates in TRUS images. Methods: A 3D edge-aware attention generative adversarial network (3D EAGAN)-based prostate segmentation method is proposed in this paper, which consists of an edge-aware segmentation network (EASNet) that performs the prostate segmentation and a discriminator network that distinguishes predicted prostates from real prostates. The proposed EASNet is composed of an encoder-decoder-based U-Net backbone network, a detail compensation module, four 3D spatial and channel attention modules, an edge enhance module, and a global feature extractor. The detail compensation module is proposed to compensate for the loss of detailed information caused by the down-sampling process of the encoder. The features of the detail compensation module are selectively enhanced by the 3D spatial and channel attention module. Furthermore, an edge enhance module is proposed to guide shallow layers in the EASNet to focus on contour and edge information in prostates. One key challenge of facial trait recognition is the large non-rigid appearance variations due to some irrelevant real world factors, such as viewpoint and expression changes. In this paper, we explore how the shape information, i.e. facial landmark positions, can be explicitly deployed into the popular Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architecture to disentangle such irrelevant non-rigid appearance variations. First, instead of using fixed kernels, we propose a kernel adaptation method to dynamically determine the convolutional kernels according to the spatial distribution of facial landmarks, which helps learning more robust features. Second, motivated by the intuition that different local facial regions may demand different adaptation functions, we further propose a tree-structured convolutional architecture to hierarchically fuse multiple local adaptive CNN subnetworks. Comprehensive experiments on WebFace, Morph II and MultiPIE databases well validate the effectiveness of the proposed kernel adaptation method and tree-structured convolutional architecture for facial trait recognition tasks, including identity, age and gender recognition. For all the tasks, the proposed architecture consistently achieves the state-of-the-art performances.

This paper proposes an audio watermark extraction technique which adopts independent component analysis (ICA) for blind watermark decoding. Unlike the existing work, our method allows to combine data synchronization and watermark decoding into one optimization procedure, thus robust to transmission over different channels. Watermark encoder is designed as a nonlinear data embedding machine which is compatible to MPEG Layer 1 Model 1. It is shown that the proposed ICA based watermark decoding scheme allows decoding watermark info accurately even though the watermark to signal ratio is less than -20 dB. The method is robust to stereo-to-mono conversions and performs very well when the channel noise level is high.

Graph neural networks (GNNs), as a powerful deep learning framework for modeling graph-structured data, have attracted lots of attention recently. Most of existing GNNs need a lot of labeled data. However, constructing generalizable and robust representation from unlabeled graph data remains a challenge for GNNs. Existing graph contrastive learning (GCL) methods either try to uniformly drop edges, or intend to remove unimportant nodes and edges, which heavily relies on the specific structure of the data. Another thing is that vanilla graph convolutional network only utilize low-pass filter (adjacency matrix), which ignores the middle and high frequency information of the graph structural data. To tackle existing challenges in the GCL methods, instead, we propose a noise perturbation based general GCL framework via flexible filters. Specifically, we first add various types of noise to the nodes and edges. Subsequently, we design flexible filters, which are the combination of low, middle and high-pass filters. Our investigation systematically examines the impact of noise and filters, with an initial theoretical analysis linking these elements to the triplet loss function, shedding light on their roles. Extensive experiments in node classification showcase that our proposed approach surpasses existing state-of-the-art baselines. Surprisingly, we find that moderate levels of noise effectively alleviate the over-smoothing problem encountered in GNNs, while the use of flexible filters notably enhances model performance.

A multichannel filtering-based texture segmentation method is applied to a variety of document image processing problems: text-graphics separation, address-block location, and bar code localization. In each of these segmentation problems, the text context or bar code in the image is considered to define a unique texture. Thus, all three document analysis problems can be posed as texture segmentation problems. Two-dimensional Gabor filters are used to compute texture features. Both supervised and unsupervised methods are used to identify regions of text or bar code in the document images. The performance of the segmentation and classification scheme for a variety of document images demonstrates the generality and effectiveness of the approach.< >
