Although there are advanced technologies for character recognition, automatic descriptive answer evaluation is an open challenge for the document image analysis community due to large diversified handwritten text and answers to the question. This paper presents a novel method for detecting anomaly handwritten text in the responses written by the students to the questions. The method is proposed based on the fact that when the students are confident in answering questions, the students usually write answers legibly and neatly while they are not confident, they write sloppy writing which may not be easy for the reader to understand. To detect such anomaly handwritten text, we explore a new combination of Fourier transform and deep learning model for detecting edges. This result preserves the structure of handwritten text. For extracting features for classification of anomaly text and normal text, the proposed method studies the behavior of writing style, especially the variation at ascenders and descenders. Therefore, the proposed work draws principal axis which is invariant to rotation, scaling and some extent to distortion for the edge images. With respect to principal axis, the proposed method draws medial axis using uppermost and lowermost points. The distance between the medial axis and principal axis points are considered as feature vector. Further, the feature vector is passed to Artificial Neural Network for classification of anomaly text. The proposed method is evaluated by testing on our own dataset, standard dataset of gender identification (IAM) and handwritten forgery detection dataset (ACPR 2019). The results on different datasets show that the proposed work outperforms the existing methods.

Road segmentation for remote sensing images using adversarial spatial pyramid networks

Because of the complex background, and high density, most of the existing methods fail to accurately extract a road network that appears correct and complete. Moreover, they suffer from either insufficient training data or high costs of manual annotation. To address these problems, we introduce a new model to apply structured domain adaption for synthetic image generation and road segmentation. We incorporate a feature pyramid network into generative adversarial networks to minimize the difference between the source and target domains. A generator is learned to produce quality synthetic images, and the discriminator attempts to distinguish them. We also propose a feature pyramid network that improves the performance of the proposed model by extracting effective features from all the layers of the network for describing different scales’ objects. Indeed, a novel scale-wise architecture is introduced to learn from the multi-level feature maps and improve the semantics of the features. For optimization, the model is trained by a joint reconstruction loss function, which minimizes the difference between the fake images and the real ones. A wide range of experiments on three datasets prove the superior performance of the proposed approach in terms of accuracy and efficiency. In particular, our model achieves state-of-the-art 78.86 IOU on the Massachusetts dataset with 14.89M parameters and 86.78B FLOPs, with 4× fewer FLOPs but higher accuracy (+3.47% IOU) than the top performer among state-of-the-art approaches used in the evaluation. A novel deep structure U-net for sea-land segmentation in remote sensing images

Sea-land segmentation is an important process for many key applications in remote sensing. Proper operative sea–land segmentation for remote sensing images remains a challenging issue due to complex and diverse transition between sea and lands. Although several Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have been developed for sea-land segmentation, the performance of these CNNs is far from the expected target. This paper presents a novel deep neural network structure for pixel-wise sea-land segmentation, a Residual Dense U-Net (RDU-Net), in complex and high-density remote sensing images. RDU-Net is a combination of both downsampling and upsampling paths to achieve satisfactory results. In each down- and up-sampling path, in addition to the convolution layers, several densely connected residual network blocks are proposed to systematically aggregate multi-scale contextual information. Each dense network block contains multilevel convolution layers, short-range connections and an identity mapping connection which facilitates features reuse in the network and makes full use of the hierarchical features from the original images. These proposed blocks have a certain number of connections that are designed with shorter distance backpropagation between the layers and can significantly improve segmentation results whilst minimizing computational costs. We have performed extensive experiments on two real datasets Google-Earth and ISPRS and compare the proposed RDU-Net against several variations of Dense Networks. The experimental results show that RDU-Net outperforms the other state-of-the-art approaches on the sea-land segmentation tasks. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

MARL-based calibration for cameras with large FOV

Achieving high-precision measurements in a large field of view (FOV) is a challenging task. The accuracy of vision measurements is determined by the quality of camera calibration, which is influenced by the pose of the target. To obtain suitable target pose, a target pose optimization method based on multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) is proposed. Firstly, the target pose optimization problem is modelled as a Markov decision process (MDP). Secondly, a multi-agent proximal policy optimization (MAPPO) algorithm for target pose optimization is designed by parameter sharing mechanism. Finally, optimization algorithm is adopted to camera calibration process. The calibration experiment was carried out under the large FOV of 4600 mm × 2300 mm. The results show that the back-projection error was 0.198 mm, the relative error of the diagonal length of target (505.847 mm) was 0.789 mm, and the success rate of large FOV camera calibration was 98.5%.

Riemannian Self-Attention Mechanism for SPD Networks

Symmetric positive definite (SPD) matrix has been demonstrated to be an effective feature descriptor in many scientific areas, as it can encode spatiotemporal statistics of the data adequately on a curved Riemannian manifold, i.e., SPD manifold. Although there are many different ways to design network architectures for SPD matrix nonlinear learning, very few solutions explicitly mine the geometrical dependencies of features at different layers. Motivated by the great success of self-attention mechanism in capturing long-range relationships, an SPD manifold self-attention mechanism (SMSA) is proposed in this paper using some manifold-valued geometric operations, mainly the Riemannian metric, Riemannian mean, and Riemannian optimization. Then, an SMSA-based geometric learning module (SMSA-GLM) is designed for the sake of improving the discrimination of the generated deep structured representations. Extensive experimental results achieved on three benchmarking datasets show that our modification against the baseline network further alleviates the information degradation problem and leads to improved accuracy. Learning a representation with the block-diagonal structure for pattern classification

Sparse-representation-based classification (SRC) has been widely studied and developed for various practical signal classification applications. However, the performance of a SRC-based method is degraded when both the training and test data are corrupted. To counteract this problem, we propose an approach that learns Representation with Block-Diagonal Structure (RBDS) for robust image recognition. To be more specific, we first introduce a regularization term that captures the block-diagonal structure of the target representation matrix of the training data. The resulting problem is then solved by an optimizer. Last, based on the learned representation, a simple yet effective linear classifier is used for the classification task. The experimental results obtained on several benchmarking datasets demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed RBDS method. The code will be released upon the acceptance of this paper. Tasks-oriented channel optimization and resource allocation in vehicular networks: a hierarchical reinforcement learning based approach

The number of devices, data volume, and pictures and videos in the vehicular networks have all increased significantly as a result of the continued development of 6G technology, putting an enormous burden on the edge communication resources. To solve this problem, a good resource allocation scheme is necessary. Existing resource allocation algorithms often pursue accurate transmission and ignore time-varying channels. In order to further obtain real and reasonable resource allocation results, this paper introduces semantic communication. It then decomposes that problem to further establish a hierarchical framework. The problem is addressed via a task-oriented channel optimization and resource allocation scheme based on a hierarchical reinforcement learning (TCRS-HRL) algorithm. First, a channel optimization and resource allocation problem under an imperfect channel state is developed, and it is divided into two separate sub problems for optimization. Second, the resource allocation problem at the edge is addressed with the introduction of hierarchical reinforcement learning and the TCRSHRL algorithm. The ideal channel state and resource allocation approach are found by constructing the state space, action space, and environmental feedback for each aspect individually. Finally, simulations have demonstrated the superiority and performance benefits of the proposed algorithm compared to current methods, showing that the implementation of TCRS-HRL can result in an accuracy improvement of roughly 8%. © 1967-2012 IEEE.

Differentiable neural architecture learning for efficient neural network design

Automated neural network design has received ever-increasing attention with the evolution of deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs), especially involving their deployment on embedded and mobile platforms. One of the biggest problems that neural architecture search (NAS) confronts is that a large number of candidate neural architectures are required to train, using, for instance, reinforcement learning and evolutionary optimisation algorithms, at a vast computation cost. Even recent differentiable neural architecture search (DNAS) samples a small number of candidate neural architectures based on the probability distribution of learned architecture parameters to select the final neural architecture. To address this computational complexity issue, we introduce a novel architecture parameterisation based on scaled sigmoid function, and propose a general Differentiable Neural Architecture Learning (DNAL) method to optimize the neural architecture without the need to evaluate candidate neural networks. Specifically, for stochastic supernets as well as conventional CNNs, we build a new channel-wise module layer with the architecture components controlled by a scaled sigmoid function. We train these neural network models from scratch. The network optimization is decoupled into the weight optimization and the architecture optimization, which avoids the interaction between the two types of parameters and alleviates the vanishing gradient problem. We address the non-convex optimization problem of neural architecture by the continuous scaled sigmoid method with convergence guarantees. Extensive experiments demonstrate our DNAL method delivers superior performance in terms of neural architecture search cost, and adapts to conventional CNNs (e.g., VGG16 and ResNet50), lightweight CNNs (e.g., MobileNetV2) and stochastic supernets (e.g., ProxylessNAS). Face recognition Based on Support Vector Machine and Nearest Neighbor Classifier

Support vector machine (SVM), as a novel approach in pattern recognition, has demonstrated a success in face detection and face recognition. In this paper, a face recognition approach based on the SVM classifier with the nearest neighbor classifier (NNC) is proposed. The principal component analysis (PCA) is used to reduce the dimension and extract features. Then one-against-all stratedy is used to train the SVM classifiers. At the testing stage, we propose an algorithm by combining SVM classifier with NNC to improve the correct recognition rate. We conduct the experiment on the Cambridge ORL face database. The result shows that our approach outperforms the standard eigenface approach and some other approaches.

Self-grouping convolutional neural networks

Although group convolution operators are increasingly used in deep convolutional neural networks to improve the computational efficiency and to reduce the number of parameters, most existing methods construct their group convolution architectures by a predefined partitioning of the filters of each convolutional layer into multiple regular filter groups with an equal spatial group size and data-independence, which prevents a full exploitation of their potential. To tackle this issue, we propose a novel method of designing self-grouping convolutional neural networks, called SG-CNN, in which the filters of each convolutional layer group themselves based on the similarity of their importance vectors. Concretely, for each filter, we first evaluate the importance value of their input channels to identify the importance vectors, and then group these vectors by clustering. Using the resulting data-dependent centroids, we prune the less important connections, which implicitly minimizes the accuracy loss of the pruning, thus yielding a set of diverse group convolution filters. Subsequently, we develop two fine-tuning schemes, i.e. (1) both local and global fine-tuning and (2) global only fine-tuning, which experimentally deliver comparable results, to recover the recognition capacity of the pruned network. Comprehensive experiments carried out on the CIFAR-10/100 and imageNet datasets demonstrate that our self-grouping convolution method adapts to various state-of-the-art CNN architectures, (Figure presented) Figure 1: Evolution of group convolutions.
