Combined Trojan Y Chromosome strategy and sterile insect technique to eliminate mosquitoes: Modelling and analysis

Sterile insect technique has been successfully applied in the control of agricultural pests, however, it has a limited ability to control mosquitoes. A promising alternative approach is Trojan Y Chromosome strategy, which works by manipulating the sex ratio of a population through the introduction of feminized Y Y supermales that guarantee male offspring. A combined Trojan Y chromosome strategy and sterile insect technique (TYC-SIT) strategy is modeled with ordinary differential equations that allow the kinetics of the female population decline of mosquitoes to be evaluated under identical modeling conditions. The dynamical analysis leads to results on both local and global stabilities of this combined model. Optimal control analysis is also implemented to investigate the optimal mechanisms for extinction of mosquitoes. In particular, the numerical results affirm that the combined TYC-SIT enables near elimination of mosquitoes. The conclusion has great significance for pest controls. © 2021, CC BY.

Cancer lesion segmentation plays a vital role in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment planning. As creating labels for large medical image datasets can be time-consuming, laborious and error prone, a framework is proposed in this paper by using coarse annotations generated from boundary scribbles for training deep convolutional neural networks. These coarse annotations include locations of lesions but are lack of accurate information about boundaries. To mitigate the negative impact of annotation errors, we propose an adaptive weighted constrained loss that can change the weight of the task-specific penalty term according to the learning process. To impose further supervision about the boundaries, uncertainty-based boundary maps are generated, which can provide better descriptions for the blurry boundaries. Validation on a dataset containing 154 MRI scans has shown an average Dice coefficient of 82.25 %, which is comparable to results from fine annotations, demonstrating the efficacy of the proposed approach. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Contextual information plays an important role in action recognition. Local operations have difficulty to model the relation between two elements with a long-distance interval. However, directly modeling the contextual information between any two points brings huge cost in computation and memory, especially for action recognition, where there is an additional temporal dimension. Inspired from 2D criss-cross attention used in segmentation task, we propose a recurrent 3D criss-cross attention (RCCA-3D) module to model the dense long-range spatiotemporal contextual information in video for action recognition. The global context is factorized into sparse relation maps. We model the relationship between points in the same line along the direction of horizon, vertical and depth at each time, which forms a 3D criss-cross structure, and duplicate the same operation with recurrent mechanism to transmit the relation between points in a line to a plane finally to the whole spatiotemporal space. Compared with the non-local method, the proposed RCCA-3D module reduces the number of parameters and FLOPs by 25% and 30% for video context modeling. We evaluate the performance of RCCA-3D with two latest action recognition networks on three datasets and make a thorough analysis of the architecture, obtaining the optimal way to factorize and fuse the relation maps. Edge-preserving image smoothing is a fundamental procedure for many computer vision and graphic applications. There is a tradeoff between the smoothing quality and the processing speed: the high smoothing quality usually requires a high computational cost which leads to the low processing speed. In this paper, we propose a new global optimization based method, named iterative least squares (ILS), for efficient edge-preserving image smoothing. Our approach can produce high-quality results but at a much lower computational cost. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that the propose method can produce results with little visible artifacts. Moreover, the computation of ILS can be highly parallel, which can be easily accelerated through either multi-thread computing or the GPU hardware. With the acceleration of a GTX 1080 GPU, it is able to process images of 1080p resolution (1920 × 1080) at the rate of 20fps for color images and 47fps for gray images. In addition, the ILS is flexible and can be modified to handle more applications that require different smoothing properties. Experimental results of several applications show the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method. Tooth instance segmentation provides important assistance for computer-aided orthodontic treatment. Many previous studies on this issue have limited performance on distinguishing adjacent teeth and obtaining accurate tooth boundaries. To address the challenging task, in this paper, we present a novel method achieving tooth instance segmentation and classification from cone beam CT (CBCT) images. The core of our method is a two-level hierarchical deep neural network. We first embed center-sensitive mechanism with global stage heatmap, so as to ensure accurate tooth centers and guide the localization of tooth instances. Then in the local stage, DenseASPP-UNet is proposed for fine segmentation and classification of individual tooth. Further, in order to improve the accuracy of tooth segmentation boundary and refine the boundaries of overlapped teeth, a boundary-aware dice loss and a novel label optimization are also applied in our method. Comparative experiments show that the proposed framework exhibits high segmentation performance and outperforms the state-of-the-art methods.

The vulnerability of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) to adversarial attacks has become an important research area of machine learning. It has been known that many state-of-the-art DNNs suffer the risk of universal adversarial perturbations, which are image-agnostic and able to lead misclassifications with high probability. In this paper, we propose a novel method to create such universal adversarial perturbations. Our approach is the first to generate universal perturbations by attacking the attention heat maps with the interpretation method, Layer-wise Relevance Propagation. It is demonstrated that our method achieves high fooling ratios on image classification DNNs pre-trained by imageNet dataset. Moreover, our attack shows good transferability across different DNNs.

Generate high-resolution adversarial samples by identifying effective features

As the prevalence of deep learning in computer vision, adversarial samples that weaken the neural networks emerge in large numbers, revealing their deep-rooted defects. Most adversarial attacks calculate an imperceptible perturbation in image space to fool the DNNs. In this strategy, the perturbation looks like noise and thus could be mitigated. Attacks in feature space produce semantic perturbation, but they could only deal with low resolution samples. The reason lies in the great number of coupled features to express a high-resolution image. In this paper, we propose Attack by Identifying Effective Features (AIEF), which learns different weights for features to attack. Effective features, those with great weights, influence the victim model much but distort the image little, and thus are more effective for attack. By attacking mostly on them, AIEF produces high resolution adversarial samples with acceptable distortions. The Transformer architecture has witnessed a rapid development in recent years, outperforming the CNN architectures in many computer vision tasks, as exemplified by the Vision Transformers (ViT) for image classification. However, existing visual transformer models aim to extract semantic information for high-level tasks, such as classification and detection. These methods ignore the importance of the spatial resolution of the input image, thus sacrificing the local correlation information of neighboring pixels. In this paper, we propose a Patch Pyramid Transformer(PPT) to effectively address the above issues. Specifically, we first design a Patch Transformer to transform the image into a sequence of patches, where transformer encoding is performed for each patch to extract local representations. In addition, we construct a Pyramid Transformer to effectively extract the non-local information from the entire image. After obtaining a set of multi-scale, multi-dimensional, and multi-angle features of the original image, we design the image reconstruction network to ensure that the features can be reconstructed into the original input. To validate the effectiveness, we apply the proposed Patch Pyramid Transformer to image fusion tasks. The experimental results demonstrate its superior performance, compared to the state-of-the-art fusion approaches, achieving the best results on several evaluation indicators. Thanks to the underlying representational capacity of the PPT network, it can directly be applied to different image fusion tasks without redesigning or retraining the network. In this work, we generalize the reaction-diffusion equation in statistical physics, Schrödinger equation in quantum mechanics, and Helmholtz equation in paraxial optics into the neural partial differential equations (NPDE), which can be considered as the fundamental equations in the field of artificial intelligence research. We take the finite difference method to discretize NPDEs for finding the numerical solution. Moreover, the basic building blocks of deep neural network architectures, including multi-layer perceptron, convolutional neural networks, and recurrent neural networks, are generated. The learning strategies, such as Adaptive moment estimation, L-BFGS, pseudoinverse learning algorithms, and partial differential equation constrained optimization, are also developed. This work is of significance in that it presents a clear view of interpretable deep neural networks physically, enables high possibility to be applied to analog computing device design, and paves the road to physical artificial intelligence. © 2021, CC BY-NC-SA.
