The high proportion of renewable energy integration and the sharp fluctuation of load bring huge backup demand to the power system, which requires the auxiliary service of thermal power units to ensure the safety of the power system. However, the widely used marginal price mechanism is difficult to identify the externalities value of market members and the value of ancillary services provided by generators. To accurately identify the externality value of market members, the Vickey-Clarke-Groves (VCG) mechanism based on incremental costs was introduced. Compared with the marginal price mechanism, the VCG mechanism requires removing the generators sequentially and re-optimizing, which is computationally inefficient. An accelerated algorithm based on optimal base replacement is proposed, which uses the dual simplex method to perform optimal basis replacement based on the initial optimal basis to obtain the optimal solution of the new problem after removing generators. Case studies based on modified IEEE30-bus system demonstrate the significant improvement of the acceleration algorithm on the computational efficiency of the VCG mechanism. © 2023 IEEE.

Understanding transitions in animated bar charts

Animated bar charts have gained popularity on the Internet for their ability to display historical rankings through smooth animated transitions that clearly show the rankings over time. To investigate the usage scenarios of these charts, we analyzed the pop-up comments to understand viewers’ focus. Our findings suggest that animated transitions play a key role in viewers’ perception of ranking changes. We summarized various transition methods and evaluated their impact on user perception and memory through user experiments. We also conducted a detailed analysis of each transition method’s implementation. Our research sheds light on the effectiveness of different transition strategies for animated bar charts. © The Author(s) 2023.

In this paper, we propose a Dynamic Operating Envelope (DOE) coordination method for aggregators in distribution networks (DNs). While the DOE acts as a time-varying power export limit to ensure the DN’s integrity, existing aggregator-agnostic allocation overlooks the surplus of aggregators. To address this limitation, our approach allows aggregators to cooperatively adjust DOEs by solving a two-stage robust optimization and settling payments between themselves. The coordination problem is solved by the column-and-constraint generation (C&CG) algorithm, ensuring that any power injection within the adjusted DOE maintains the network integrity. Consequently, the aggregators’ total surplus increases. A 4-bus system case study demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Piecewise linear neural networks (PLNNs) are proven universal approximators for continuous functions on the compact domain. For multiple PLNNs (mPLNNs) differing from each other in suffering different approximation errors (AEs) when approximating the same continuous function, activating all the PLNNs to approximate the continuous function, and then, picking up the minimum AE (MAE) from all the AEs seems to be a practical way to arrive at such MAE. Activating PLNNs has to consume energy, and more activated PLNNs provide more AEs to consider, which can maximize the probability of guaranteeing the MAE, while also needing to harvest more energy. Therefore, how to make the optimal tradeoff between energy harvested and approximation accuracy for mPLNNs arises as an interesting issue. To address this problem, this paper first deduces the objective function, with the accumulative probability of obtaining the MAE as the objective and the accumulative energy harvested as the constraint, then proposes an algorithm for mPLNNs to enjoy the maximum probability of achieving the MAE within the acceptable level of accumulative energy harvested. Experiments verify its performance.

A unifying moving mesh method for curves, surfaces, and domains based on mesh equidistribution and alignment

A unifying moving mesh method is developed for general m-dimensional geometric objects in d-dimensions (d ≥ 1 and 1 ≤ m ≤ d) including curves, surfaces, and domains. The method is based on mesh equidistribution and alignment and does not require the availability of an analytical parametric representation of the underlying geometric object. Mathematical characterizations of shape and size of m-simplexes and properties of corresponding edge matrices and affine mappings are derived. The equidistribution and alignment conditions are presented in a unifying form for m-simplicial meshes. The equation for mesh movement is defined based on the moving mesh PDE approach, and suitable projection of the nodal mesh velocities is employed to ensure the mesh points stay on the underlying geometric object. The analytical expression for the mesh velocities is obtained in a compact matrix form. The nonsingularity of moving meshes is proved. Numerical results for curves (m = 1) and surfaces (m = 2) in two and three dimensions are presented to demonstrate the ability of the developed method to move mesh points without causing singularity and control their concentration. Well-balanced fifth-order finite volume WENO schemes with constant subtraction technique for shallow water equations

In this paper, we propose a new well-balanced fifth-order finite volume WENO method for solving one- and two-dimensional shallow water equations with bottom topography. The well-balanced property is crucial to the ability of a scheme to simulate perturbation waves over the "lake-at-rest" steady state such as waves on a lake or tsunami waves in the deep ocean. We adopt the constant subtraction technique such that both the flux gradient and source term in the new pre-balanced form vanish at the lake-at-rest steady state, while the well-balanced WENO method by Xing and Shu [Commun. Comput. Phys., 2006] uses high-order accurate numerical discretization of the source term and makes the exact balance between the source term and the flux gradient, to achieve the well-balanced property. The scaling positivity-preserving limiter is used for the water height near the dry areas. The fifth-order WENO-AO reconstruction is used to construct the solution since it has better resolution than the WENO-ZQ and WENO-MR reconstructions for the perturbation of steady state flows. Extensive one- and two-dimensional numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the well-balanced, fifth-order accuracy, non-oscillatory, and positivity-preserving properties of the proposed method. In global data analysis, the central server needs the global statistic of the user data stored in local clients. In such cases, an Honest-but-Curious central server might put user privacy at risk in trying to collect individual statistics of each user. In response, the secure aggregation provides a solution for calculating global statistics without revealing users' privacy data. However, existing secure aggregation protocols only focus on the data in the form of vectors or common sets, which limits their application scope. We formalize a general problem - key-value set secure aggregation - that not only includes secure vector aggregation and private set union but also supports more applications. To address the proposed problem, we devise our solution (called the KVSAgg framework) that promises satisfactory performance in security, efficiency, and accuracy. Our key technique is a homomorphic transform algorithm (called HyperIBLT) that is not only capable of bidirectionally transforming data between key-value sets and vectors, but also able to transform sum operation of sets to addition of vectors. We implement KVSAgg on both CPU and GPU platforms and perform the evaluation on three use cases including federated learning, distributed data counting, and finding global hot items. Compared with our baselines, KVSAgg simultaneously achieves the best security, efficiency higher by orders of magnitude, and zero-error in nearly all cases. A range filter is a data structure to answer range membership queries. Range queries are common in modern applications, and range filters have gained rising attention for improving the performance of range queries by ruling out empty range queries. However, state-of-the-art range filters, such as SuRF and Rosetta, suffer either high false positive rate or low throughput. In this paper, we propose a novel range filter, called REncoder. It organizes all prefixes of keys into a segment tree, and locally encodes the segment tree into a Bloom filter to accelerate queries. REncoder supports diverse workloads by adaptively choosing how many levels of the segment tree to store. We theoretically prove that the error of REncoder is bounded and derive the asymptotic space complexity under the bounded error. We conduct extensive experiments on both synthetic datasets and real datasets. The experimental results show that REncoder outperforms all state-of-the-art range filters. © 2023 IEEE.
