In the training process of HMM-based speech synthesis systems, the states of the HMM models are clustered based on the context features labeled on the training corpus.A good feature set would enable the synthesis system to generate natural prosody. In this paper, in order to synthesize interrogative intonation, we analyzed the acoustic features of the interrogative intonation and the context features that are related to the interrogative intonation in Chinese. We then expanded the feature set used conventional HMM-based speech synthesis system with interrogative intonation related features. A new speech synthesis system is trained with the proposed feature set. The analysis of train and synthesis results show that the proposed feature set is able to discriminate declarative and interrogative intonations. Perception listening test also shows the synthesis system using the expanded feature set can generate interrogative intonation.

In this paper, we propose a novel approach for hyperspectral data classification using adaboosting of artificial neural networks based weak classifiers. The adaboost algorithm employs an iterative approach which combines weak classifiers to approximate a Bayes classifier. It requires performance of each weak classifier to be a little better than random guessing. In the approach, we use several neural network based weak classifiers to make one strong classifier and each weak classifier contains only one hidden layer. As the weak classifiers are simple, therefore, these does not require a lot of time for training and, therefore, are time efficient. Back propagation algorithm is used for the learning purposes. In the approach, weights are assigned to each training sample and those are boosted in subsequent iterations for the misclassified training samples, therefore, providing more robust approach to classify difficult samples. A confidence score is assigned to each weak classifier. Final classifier is achieved by linear combination of all the weak classifiers. Entropy gain clustered PCA is used for the dimension reduction of the data. We performed experiments on real hyperspectral dataset of AVIRIS Indian Pines and the comparisons with neural network and ML based approaches prove the efficiency of the proposed approach.

Modeling the relationship between texture semantics and textile images

Texture semantics, which is the kind of feelings that the texture feature of an image would arouse in people, is important in texture analysis. In this study, we study the relationship between texture semantics and textile images, and propose a novel parametric mapping model to predict texture semantics from textile images. To represent rich texture semantics and enable it to participate in computation, 2D continuous semantic space, where the axes correspond to hard-soft and warm-cool, is first adopted to quantitatively describe texture semantics. Then texture features of textile images are extracted using Gabor decomposition. Finally, the mapping model between texture features and texture semantics in the semantic space is built using three different methods: linear regression, k-nearest neighbor (KNN) and Multi-layered Perceptron (MLP). The performance of the proposed mapping model is evaluated with a dataset of 1352 textile images. The results confirm that the mapping model is effective and especially KNN and MLP reach the good performance. We further apply the mapping model to two applications: automatic textile image annotation with texture semantics and textile image search based on texture semantics. The subjective experimental results are consistent with human perception, which verifies the effectiveness of the proposed mapping model. The proposed model and its applications can be applied to various automation systems in commercial textile industry. © Maxwell Scientific Organization, 2011.

The Transport Control Protocol (TCP) has been widely used by wired and wireless Internet applications such as FTP, email and HTTP. Numerous congestion algorithms have been proposed to improve the performance of TCP in various scenarios, especially for high bandwidth-delay product (BDP) and wireless networks. Although different algorithms may achieve different performance improvements under different network conditions, designing a congestion algorithm that performs well across a wide spectrum of network conditions remains a great challenge. In this paper, we propose a novel congestion control algorithm, named TCP-FIT, which could perform gracefully in both wireless and high BDP networks. The algorithm was inspired by parallel TCP, but with the important distinctions that only one TCP connection with one congestion window is established for each TCP session, and that no modifications to other layers (e.g. the application layer) of the end-to-end system need to be made. Extensive experimental results obtained using both network simulators as well as over “live” wired line, WiFi and 3G networks at different geographical locations and at different times of the day are presented. The performance of the algorithm shown in the experiment results is significantly improved as compared to other state-of-the-art algorithms, while maintaining good fairness.

Advances in sensing and wireless communication technologies have enabled a wide spectrum of Outdoor Environment Monitoring applications. In such applications, several wireless sensor network sectors tend to collaborate to achieve more sophisticated missions that require the existence of a communication backbone connecting (federating) different sectors. Federating these sectors is an intricate task because of the huge distances between them and because of the harsh operational conditions. A natural choice in defeating these challenges is to have multiple relay nodes (RNs) that provide vast coverage and sustain the network connectivity in harsh environments. However, these RNs are expensive;thus, the least possible number of such devices should be deployed. Furthermore, because of the harsh operational conditions in Outdoor Environment Monitoring applications, fault tolerance becomes crucial, which imposes further challenges;RNs should be deployed in such a way that tolerates failures in some links or nodes. In this paper, we propose two optimized relay placement strategies with the objective of federating disjoint wireless sensor network sectors with the maximum connectivity under a cost constraint on the total number of RNs to be deployed. The performance of the proposed approach is validated and assessed through extensive simulations and comparisons assuming practical considerations in outdoor environments. Household appliances are being equipped with embedded micro-controllers and wireless transceivers, offering smart behavior. These augmented appliances form wireless networks and transform residential areas into smart homes. Advancements such as the effective penetration of the Internet in embedded computing and the promising practice of the Web of Things, allow the realization of Web-oriented smart homes. In a previous work, we developed a Web-based application framework for smart homes, supporting concurrent interaction from multiple family members. In this paper, we improve the functionality of our system by including a 6LoWPAN-based wireless sensor network inside the home environment, addressing issues such as device discovery and service description. Web techniques such as HTTP caching and push messaging, facilitate the efficient operation of a fully Web-based smart home. Through a technical evaluation, we show the benefits of directly Web-enabling embedded sensors in terms of performance and energy conservation. The development of a Web-based graphical application abstracts home automation procedure for typical residents.

As an emerging portable service platform, OSGi is now taking a more and more important role in Ubiquitous computing environment. As a module management framework, OSGi provides the functions of dynamic loading and unloading software modules at runtime. But its use is limited because it is centralized and single programming language supported. In this paper we present LIR-OSGi, an extended framework of OSGi, which is designed to add the distribution and programming language independence to OSGi. Meanwhile it is easy to use for developers because of the transparence of service invocation and automation of distribution. Not like OSGi which can be applied only on the Java platform, LIR-OSGi makes programs which may be written in different programming languages be able to call each other transparently so that it can be applied in many different platforms such as DotNet Framework and so on. This brings much convenience to the program development in a distributed and heterogeneous environment.

Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) are getting increasing attention from academic researchers and automotive industries. Timely and cost-efficient multi-hop data delivery among vehicles is essential for VANETs, and various routing protocols are envisioned for infrastructure-less vehicle-to vehicle (V2V) communications. Due to the road-constrained data delivery and highly dynamic topology of vehicle nodes, it's better to construct routing based on the road-to-road pattern than the traditional node-to-node routing pattern in MANETs. However, the challenging issue for the road-to-road routing in VANETs is the opportunistic forwarding at intersections. Therefore, we propose a novel routing scheme, called Buffer and Switch (BAS). In BAS, each road buffers the data packets with multiple duplicates propagation in order to provide more opportunities for packet switching at intersections. Different from conventional protocols in VANETs, the propagation of duplicates in BAS is bidirectional along the routing path. Moreover, BAS's cost is much lower than other flooding-based protocols due to its spatio-temporally controlled duplicates propagation. We conduct the extensive simulations to evaluate the performance of BAS based on the road map of a real city collected from Google Earth. The simulation results show that BAS can outperform the existing protocols, especially when the network resources are limited.
