The basic operation of Delay Tolerant Sensor Network (DTSN) is to finish pervasive data gathering in networks with intermittent connectivity, while the publish/subscribe (Pub/Sub for short) paradigm is used to deliver events from a source to interested clients in an asynchronous way. Recently, to extend a Pub/Sub system in DTSN has become a promising topic. However, due to the unique characteristic of frequent partitioning in DTSN, to extend a Pub/Sub system in DTSN is a considerably difficult and challenging problem, and there is no good solution to it in existing works. To adapt Pub/Sub systems to DTSN, we propose CED, a community-based event delivery protocol. In our design, event delivery is based on several unchanged communities, which are formed by sensor nodes in the network according to their connectivity. CED consists of two components: Event delivery and queue management. In event delivery, events in a community are delivered to mobile subscribers once a subscriber comes into the community, for improving the data delivery ratio. The queue management employs both the event successful delivery time and the event survival time to decide whether an event should be delivered or dropped for minimizing the transmission overhead. The effectiveness of CED is demonstrated through comprehensive simulation studies. © 2009 IEEE.

Booming Internet and mobile computing technology require Smart Space to have stronger communication capability with varied devices, services and other Smart Space counterparts. In this paper, we propose SSCP, an OSGi-based communication portal to provide enhanced in-space and cross-space interactions. By adopting the well-modularized architecture of OSGi, SSCP features good scalability and extensibility. SSCP also enables communication with prevailed smart device protocols, such as UPnP. Furthermore, with an ECF Adaptor, communication with Smart Space counterparts, as well as the applications using message protocols like XMPP is enabled. A prototype of SSCP is developed and experimental scenario is undertaken, which demonstrate and evaluate our work.

Contexts, the pieces of information that capture the characteristics of computing environments, are often inconsistent in the dynamic and uncertain pervasive computing environments. Various schemes have been proposed to check context consistency for pervasive applications. However, existing schemes implicitly assume that the contexts being checked belong to the same snapshot of time. This limitation makes existing schemes do not work in pervasive computing environments, which are characterized by the asynchronous coordination among computing devices. The main challenge imposed on context consistency checking by asynchronous environments is how to interpret and detect concurrent events. To this end, we propose in this paper the concurrent events detection for asynchronous consistency checking (CEDA) algorithm. An analytical model, together with corresponding numerical results, is derived to study the performance of CEDA. We also conduct extensive experimental evaluation to investigate whether CEDA is desirable for context-aware applications. Both theoretical analysis and experimental evaluation show that CEDA accurately detects concurrent events in time in asynchronous pervasive computing environments, even with dynamic changes in message delay, duration of events and error rate of context collection.

The delay tolerant mobile sensor network (DTMSN) is a new type of sensor network for pervasive information gathering. Although similar to conventional sensor networks in hardware components, DTMSN owns some unique characteristics such as sensor mobility, intermittent connectivity, etc. Therefore, traditional data gathering methods can not be applied to DTMSN. In this paper, we propose an efficient motion tendency-based data delivery scheme (MTAD) tailored for DTMSN. By using sink broadcast instead of GPS, MTAD obtains the information about the nodal motion tendency with small overhead. The information can then be used to evaluate the node's effective delivery ability and provide guidance for message transmission. MTAD also employs the message survival time to effectively manage message queues. Our simulation results show that, compared with other DTMSN data delivering approaches, MTAD achieves not only a relatively longer network lifetime but also a higher message delivery ratio with lower transmission overhead and data delivery delay.

Intrusions impose serious security threat to network environment, so it is necessary to detect and cope with them. Many intrusion detection methods focus on signature detection, where models are built to recognize known attacks. However, signature detection, limited by its nature, cannot detect novel attacks. New intrusion types, of which detection systems may not even be aware, are difficult to detect. Anomaly detection focuses on modeling the normal behavior and identifying significant deviations, which could be novel attacks. In this paper we present a clustering algorithm to identify outliers. It performs clustering on feature vectors collected from the network and can automatically detect new types of intrusions without need of manual classification of training data. Experimental results show that our system achieves a satisfactory intrusions detection rate while keeping the false positive rate reasonably low.

Sharing digital documents among multiple users on large tabletop is one of the typical application scenarios for tabletop systems. In this paper, we elaborate the guidelines of designing user interface for this application scenario. A set of finger gestures are then defined into the interface which includes single finger operation for selecting, moving and delivering a digital document among multiple users, double finger operation for resizing and rotating a digital document, trajectory operation for creating and deleting a user working area, creating, deleting and copying a digital document. A prototype tabletop application called JuTable is developed to explore these gestures. At last, we make a discussion on learnability, usability and naturalness of our interface design for this application scenario.

In a wireless sensor network (WSN), the energy hole problem is a key factor which affects the lifetime of the networks. In a WSN with circular multi-hop deployment (modeled as concentric coronas), sensors in one corona have the same transmission range termed as the transmission range of this corona, and different coronas have different transmission ranges, which compose a list termed as transmission range list. Based on our improved corona model with levels, we propose that a right transmission range of each corona is the decision factor for optimizing network lifetime after nodes deployment. We prove that searching optimal transmission range lists is a multi-objective optimization problem (MOP), which is NP hard. We propose a centralized algorithm and a distributed algorithm to build the transmission range list for different node distributions. The two algorithms can not only reduce the searching complexity but also obtain results approximated to the optimal solution. Furthermore, the simulation results indicate that the network lifetime under our solution approximates to that ensured by the optimal list. Compared with existing algorithms, our solution can make the network lifetime be extended more than two times longer. © Copyright 2008 ICST.

Context-aware applications are prone to the context consistency problem, where applications are confronted with conflicting contexts and cannot decide how to adapt themselves. In pervasive computing environments, users are often willing to accept certain degree of context inconsistency, as long as it can reduce the consistency maintenance cost, e.g., query delay and battery power. However, existing consistency maintenance schemes do not enable the users to make such tradeoffs. To this end, we propose the Probabilistic Consistency Checking for pervasive Context (PCCPC) algorithm. Detailed performance analysis shows that PCCPC enables the users to check consistency over arbitrarily specified ratio of context. We also conduct experiments to study the cost reduced by probabilistic checking. The analytical and the experimental results show that PCCPC enables the users to efficiently make tradeoffs between context consistency and the associated checking cost. © 2008 IEEE.
