Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs) for mobile Ad hoc NETworks (MANETs) is becoming an exciting and important technology in very recent years, because the intrusion prevention techniques can not satisfy the security requirements in mission critical systems. The proposed IDS architecture can be divided into two categories by the distributing form of IDS agents: fully distributed IDS and cluster-based IDS. The former has a high detection ratio, but it also consumes a cascade of energy. The latter has considered energy saving, but some hidden troubles of security exist in it. In this paper, we have proposed a novel IDS Agent Distributing (IAD) protocol for distributing IDS agents in MANETs. IAD protocol divides the whole network into several zones, selects a node subset from each zone, and runs IDS agent on the node in this subset. At the same time, IAD protocol can rectify the number of nodes running IDS agent according to the threat level of the network. Compared with the scheme that each node runs its own IDS, our proposed scheme is more energy efficient while maintaining the same level of detection rate. While compared with the cluster-based IDS scheme, our scheme is more flexible when facing the emergent situations. Simulation results show that our scheme can effectively balance the security strength and energy consuming in practice. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

Welcome to the Thirteenth ACM International Conference onMultimedia (ACM MM 2005) held in Singapore from 6 - 11 November2005 at the Hilton *** Multimedia is the premier academicconference in multimedia. The series started in 1993, at the startof multimedia era, and has quickly developed into the topconference in the field. Over the years, the concept of multimediahas evolved, from research in separate "non-textual" media such asimage, video and audio in the early years, to truly "multimedia"approaches integrating information of multiple medium types,including text and metadata, in recent years. Today, the conferencecovers a wide range of topics on the foundations of multimedia, aswell as multimedia applications, content and system. The pervasive use of multimedia has permeated into almost everyaspect of our life. This is reflected in a wide variety of programsincorporated into the conference. The conference features the usualhigh-quality technical paper presentations, short poster paperpresentations, doctoral symposium for senior graduate students,brave-new emerging topics, as well as tutorials and workshops invarious topical areas. One key aspect of this conference that isdifferent from most other academic conferences is its emphasis onsystems and applications. To this end, the conference also includestechnical demonstrations of research prototypes and systems, opensoftware competition, video demonstration of concepts andapplications, as well as interactive arts which includes anexhibition of multimedia art. The interactive arts program, startedin ACM MM 2004, is well integrated into the main activity of theconference this year. The main technical program achieves a balance between theory andpractice in applications, content and systems research inmultimedia. This year we received 312 papers in three tracks:Applications (98 submissions), Content (150 submissions) andSystems (64 submissions). This paper introduces a novel resource management approach based on personal service aggregations (PSAs) for smart spaces. As a smart space is usually a sharable system that simultaneously provides services for multi-user but with limited computational resources, the resource collision is inevitable. We propose the concept of PSA that maintains tasks, services, and underlying resources for each user to address the resource collision. By the help of PSAs, the resource management system can analyze what's the impact of a service for the user, and determines how to schedule the underlying resources. The model of a PSA and resource management strategies based on it are introduced, and a simulative example is given to further explain the idea. In the end, the future work is discussed.

Occlusion is one of the challenging problems in stereo. In this paper, we solve the problem in a segment-based style. Both images are segmented, and we propose a novel patch-based stereo algorithm that cuts the segments of one image using the segments of the other, and handles occlusion areas in a proper way. A symmetric graph-cuts optimization framework is used to find correspondence and occlusions simultaneously. The experimental results show superior performance of the proposed algorithm, especially on occlusions, untextured areas and discontinuities

In this paper, the model for multimedia transmission over downlink in 3.5G wireless network in terms of a queue with two priority classes, one of which has time priority while the another has space priority, is formulated. The input is described by the Batch Marked Markov Arrival Process (BMMAP). Service time distributions are of PH (phase) type dependent on the class of a customer. The buffer is finite, but the customers of a class having higher priority for taking into the service from a buffer (time priority) can occupy only a part of this buffer. Queueing system's behavior is described in terms of multi-dimensional continuous time skip-free to the left Markov chain. It allows to exploit an effective algorithm for calculation of the stationary distribution of the queueing system. Loss probability for customers of both classes is calculated. © ECMS 2005.

This paper proposes a model for caching database data in mobile ad-hoc networks through caching the queries and their responses. The approach makes a distinction between the queries and their responses and caches them on separate mobile nodes. This method is driven by the fact that queries do not become invalid unless when the design of the database entities changes while data changes depending on the application that feeds information into the database. The architecture we use is hierarchical and employs three types of designated nodes: a query directory (QD), service manager (SM), and caching node (CN). The one or more QDs are responsible for caching the queries and are assigned and supervised by the SM that also oversees the mobility activities and the availability of nodes in the network and makes "managerial" decisions accordingly, including appointing backup nodes. With this model, any node that joins the ad hoc network will either contribute services to other nodes (willingness to become an SM, a QD, or a CN) or consume services offered by other nodes. This model attempts to coordinate the query executing and query caching mechanisms in a seamless manner while maintaining minimal communication among nodes. We present preliminary results of a model that was simulated using the NS-2 software and show the viability of the proposed approach.

the IEEE 802.11e standard has been introduced recently for providing quality of service (QoS) capabilities in the emerging wireless local area networks. This standard introduces a contention window based enhanced distributed channel access (EDCA) technique that provides a prioritized traffic to guarantee the minimum bandwidth needed for time critical applications. However, the EDCA technique resets statically the contention window of the mobile station after each successful transmission. This static behavior does not adapt to the network state hence reduces the network usage and results in bad performance and poor link utilization whenever the demand for link utilization increases. This paper proposes a new adaptive differentiation technique for IEEE 802.11e wireless local area networks that takes into account the network state before resetting the contention window. The performance of the proposed technique is evaluated compared to the original differentiation techniques of the IEEE 802.11a and IEEE 802.11e standards. Preliminary results show that the proposed adaptive technique enhances the channel utilization and increases throughput.

Context-awareness is emerging as an important computing paradigm designed to address the special needs of applications that must accommodate or exploit the highly dynamic environments that occur in the presence of physical or logical mobility. A number of formal models are available for reasoning about concurrency. Models designed to capture the specifics of mobility are fewer but still well represented (e.g., mobile Ambients, π-Calculus, and mobile UNITY). These models do not, however, provide constructs necessary for explicit modeling of context-aware interactions. This paper builds upon earlier efforts on state-based formal reasoning about mobility and explores the process by which a model such as mobile UNITY can be transformed to explicitly capture context- awareness. Starting with an examination of the essential features of context-aware systems, this paper explores a range of constructs designed to facilitate a highly decoupled style of programming among context-aware components. The result of this exploration is a model called Context UNITY. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Facial images captured by camera are usually influenced by several different kinds of factor, such as human identity, facial expression, and etc. Therefore facial expressive image analysis plays an important role in many different applications, such as expression recognition, face recognition with expressive images, facial expressive image synthesis and etc. In this paper, "human identity" and "facial expression" are regarded as two influence factors of face appearance, and a novel kernel-based bilinear factorization method is proposed to decouple the interaction from each other. The trained non-linear factorization model has been used for facial expressive image translation, and to person and/or expression recognition, and got promising results. In this paper, the principle of our method is described and some preliminary experimental results are included.
