Adaptive irregular grid of seismic tomography: A synthetic test

Seismic tomography is a method that is widely applied to obtain seismic velocity structures below the surface. This method is applied to various cases, from global to regional scales, as well as local scales such as in the case of volcanoes, geothermal areas and underground mining. Until now, the grid form that is still widely used is the regular grid form. With a very rigid grid shape, it will be more difficult and inflexible to model the geometry of certain geological models that are very varied, even though mathematically there is no reason to avoid certain grid shapes and sizes. In order to minimize the uncertainty of the subsurface geological model grid, we developed a script to perform seismic tomography where the shape and size of the grid can be made irregular based on the Voronoi diagram. The number of grids in the inversion process can also adaptively increase or decrease based on the number of the raypath data. We then applied it to the synthetic crosshole tomography data and compared the results with the regular grid. With the irregular shape and size of the grid, better inversion results are obtained and are more suitable with the synthetic model.

This paper focuses on the effects of potential ground motion variations in the range of 6.6–7.2 Mw from the Lembang Fault on the dynamic response of groundwater (Gw)-bearing layers in the Bandung Groundwater Basin. The dynamic response of the soil deposits is considered as a one-dimensional model due to the vertical shear wave propagation therein, influenced by local soil conditions or properties that are linear viscoelastic with variable damping. Meanwhile, the bedrock is considered an elastic medium upon which the shear wave propagates due to ground motion. The ground motion may cause the liquefaction of Gw-bearing layers near the bedrock with intensities starting from 6.8 Mw. Ground motions in the range of 6.6–7.2 Mw can cause peak ground acceleration at the ground surface ranging between 0.15–0.25 gal.

Evaluation of engineering in ESP installation with various reservoir properties in the offshore X field

Oil wells in the x field in the offshore Natuna Indonesia generally use gas lifts as artificial lifts. As time goes, the field enters of oil production decline phase. To maintain oil production and evaluate the other artificial lift, the Electric Submersible Pump or ESP method was conducted on five wells A-01, A-02, A-03, A-04, and A-05, with various reservoir properties. The research objective is to evaluate the technical application of the ESP and obtain the highest potential well to increase oil recovery. The methodology was carried out by collecting field primary data such as reservoir data, Depth, slope, etc. Then the ESP application design is carried out by manually calculating the wells. Result and discussion: based on the calculations, the ESP method can be applied to wells A-01, A-02, A-03, and A-04. A-05 cannot be used well because it has a high turpin meter value (16.35) due to a high GOR (Gas Oil Ratio) value of 2385 SCF/STB. The well with the highest potential to increase oil recovery is well A-01 with the additional oil production +1116 BOPD. It can be concluded that the most potential to be developed into ESP well is A-01.

Inclination and azimuth evaluation point determinations in 'YMN' Field 'AMR-10' reservoir by using minimum of curvature method

Oil is utilized diversely in the world; starting as cooking material, manufacture fuel, until gas for vehicles. To obtain oil reserve, a drilling from the surface to the reservoir is required. The kind drilling chosen in this research is a directional drilling where the drill bit is aimed several degrees towards targeted formation, which is not vertically located under the reservoir. The planning process of directional drilling includes drilling trajectory planning and BHA composition utilization planning during the process. To determine inclination point and azimuth in AMR-10 drilling trajectory was formed by using radius of curvature method, and compare its result with actual trajectory counted by using minimum of curvature method, by calculation vertical depth, build-up rate, radius, azimuth trajectory, dogleg value, ratio factor, north and east direction, and horizontal movement. Based on the calculation of reservoir trajectory planning of AMR-10 reservoir, the vertical depth value is at 6540.9 ft. and horizontal movement from drilling starting point is 2290.3 ft. with azimuth angle of 202.68°. Based on the calculation and survey data, we can see that an inclination of 1.76° was occurred at 149.2 *** and azimuth angle of 206.6° at similar depth.

Sumatra Island is a highly seismic active region due to its close location to the convergent zone between the Indo-Australian and Eurasian plates, and the existence of the Great Sumatran Fault (GSF). These conditions caused the island of Sumatra suffered from hundreds of earthquakes with Mw > 4 per year. Particularly, a 9.0 Mw Sumatra-Andaman 2004 earthquake occured in northern Sumatra which changed the in-situ stress and seismicity pattern. In such case, quantifying the tectonic stress perturbation prior and after 2004 Sumatra-Andaman earthquake is becoming key issue in assessing the seismic hazard. To invert the in-situ stress information in Sumatra, first we identify the fault plane from its auxiliary plane in the focal mechanism solutions using the fault instability criterion. Effect of surface steps on chemical ordering in the subsurface of Cu(Au) solid solutions

Atomic steps are typically assumed to only influence surface phenomena of solids. In contrast, here we show, using in situ atomic-resolution electron microscopy observations and atomistic modeling, the pronounced effect from surface steps in inducing compositional and structural evolution in the subsurface of a Cu(Au) solid solution. We find that Au surface segregation results in a stacked sequence of Cu-Au ordered phases in the subsurface. The presence of a monatomic step at the surface induces the formation of an antiphase boundary that extends from the surface step to deeper layers by maintaining the same composition profile associated with each terrace. The bunching of surface steps induces chemical disordering of the Cu-Au ordered phases in the subsurface region of the bunched steps. These results demonstrate the instant propagation of surface dynamics of atomic steps into the subsurface region and can find broader applicability in utilizing surface defects to tune the composition and structure in the subsurface of alloys.

Multi-channel analysis of surface wave (MASW) is a suitable technique to infer shallow structure of vertical shear-wave velocity profile from seismic record data. The processing stage is focused on obtaining the reliable dispersion curves, and the final stage of the method is that to obtain the shear velocity model that can explain the observation. The genetic algorithm (GA) method, one of the global optimization approaches, has been implemented to obtain shear wave model from Rayleigh wave dispersion curve. The GA method mimic biological evolution in order to obtain the optimum solution. Application of GA method to two synthetic models for normal velocity profile and low velocity anomaly give good results indicated with small misfit. Finally, we demonstrate the GA to Rayleigh dispersion curve for real data which calculated by using phase-shift method. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd. All rights reserved.

On 26 May 2006 at 22:53:59 UTC, an earthquake with moment magnitude of 6.4 occurred in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The source of the event is still debatable. Some believe the event was caused by the reactivation of the Opak Fault which has a left-lateral type movement. Previous studies indicated there are two possibilities to explain the mechanism of the Yogyakarta earthquake. First is based on the focal mechanism from NIED (National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster) Japan which indicated that the event occurred in an oblique reverse slip. This model states that the complex Opak fault is a flower structure (strike-slip) type. Second is based on NEIC (National Earthquake Information Center) US which indicated that the event was caused by a pure strike-slip fault (active Opak fault). The May 26th earthquake triggered many aftershock events around the old Opak fault. The majority of aftershock events on 3-6 June 2006 were located around 5 km east of Opak fault. It has a trendline of N45°E and lies parallel with the Opak fault. We use Coulomb Stress change to determine which type of source model fit better the aftershocks pattern. The target fault for Coulomb Stress analysis is a left lateral pure strike slip with an orientation of N45°E/90°SE. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd. All rights reserved.

In the past 2 years, we have been conducting routine hypocenter relocation in Indonesia. We compiled and conducted hypocenter relocation of ∼50.000 events from a magnitude of 1.4 to 8.5 recorded by 451 stations around and outside Indonesia region. We used local, regional, and teleseismic arrival time data from Indonesian Agency of Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG) catalog from April 2009 to March 2018. We performed teleseismic double-difference relocation inversion using our previous study of 3D seismic velocity model beneath the Indonesian region with grid size 1° by 1° for inside Indonesia region and 1D global seismic velocity model from AK135 for outside Indonesia region. This method improved limitation from BMKG earthquake data catalog in which events were recorded from scattered seismic station array and insufficient azimuthal gap around Indonesia. Our results show that travel-time RMS residuals were greatly reduced compared to those of the BMKG catalog and the hypocenter location shows significant improvement, refining to the geological structure, especially trench and major faults. These hypocenter relocation results can be helpful for another seismic study in Indonesia region that required a precise hypocenter location e.g. body wave tomography and probability seismic hazard analysis. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd. We present a shear-velocity model for the Tangkuban Parahu Volcano (TPV) using ambient seismic noise tomography. We used data from a three-month 55-temporary netwok deployed between October 2021 and February 2022. We cross-correlated the vertical components at each station to extract an empirical Green's function, to generate group velocity maps within the periodicity range of 1 to 6.5 s. We then construct a three-dimensional model of shear-wave velocity to a depth of 5 km below the summit. Our analysis revealed distinct patterns of high and low velocity values, associated with the presence of the old Sunda caldera, unmapped local structures, and surface geothermal manifestation around TPV. We identified low velocity zones indicative of shallow reservoirs and pathways for magma migration from the subsurface to surface crater. Additionally, high velocity zones observed, correspond to cooled magmatic bodies.
