Productive Structural Geology in Volcanogenic System: A case study of Lumut Balai Geothermal Field, Indonesia

Lumut Balai is geothermal field that occurs in the caldera system, named Lumut Tua Caldera, approximately 9 km in diameter. Located in Penindaian Village, Muara Enim Regency, South Sumatra Province. Lumut Balai is one of the fields operated by Pertamina Geothermal Energy. The volcanism in Lumut Balai is closely related to the Sumatra Fault Systems activity. Surface data such as outcrops provide information regarding lithology, alteration type, and geological structures, while manifestations provide fluid geochemistry data. Subsurface data are acquired from rock cuttings and core samples (which are then further analyzed through petrographic analysis and XRD analysis), drilling parameters, and borehole image logging. These provide information and interpretation of subsurface geological conditions such as lithology distribution, alteration distribution, reservoir zone, heat source, and permeability. The methods above result in an interpretation of the Lumut Balai geological model. Lumut Balai is a geothermal system located within the Lumut Balai caldera, composed of andesite, andesite breccia, basaltic andesite, basalt, limestone, meta-sediment, tuff, and tuff breccia which are all altered to certain extents. There are five stratigraphic units, starting from the oldest to youngest are Tertiary Basement Unit, Pre-Old Lumut Unit, Pre-Caldera Unit, Caldera Unit, and Post-Caldera Unit. Alteration zones in Lumut Balai could be classified into smectite+chlorite zone, silica+chlorite zone, and chlorite+epidote zone. Productive faults in Lumut Balai are Air Ringkih Fault with NE-SW trend, Air Udangan Fault trending NE-SW, Lumut Tua Caldera and Gemurah Besar which trends N-S. This study aims to confirm the productive geological structure in Lumut Balai and gives better understanding for future field development, such as well targeting for makeup wells and reservoir simulation.

West Sumatera is a province which has a huge geothermal potential - approximately 6% of Indonesia's total geothermal potential which equals to 1,656 MWe. One of the significant reserves located in Bonjol subdistrict which accounts for more than 50 MWe. The energy from geothermal manifestation in Bonjol can be utilized prior to indirect development. Manifestation at the rate 3 kg/s and 87 °C will flow to cascading system consisting several applications, arranged in order from high to low temperature to efficiently use the excessive energy. The direct use application selected is based on the best potential commodities as well as temperature constraint of heat source. The objective of this paper is to perform a conceptual design for the first cascade direct use of geothermal energy in Indonesia to establish Bonjol Smart Geo-Energy Village which will be transformed as the center of agricultural, stockbreeding, tourism as well as cultural site. A comprehenssive research was performed through remote survey area, evaluation featured product, analysis of heat loss and heat exchange in cascade system. From potential commodities, the three applications selected are cocoa drying and egg hatching incubation machine as well as new tourism site called Terapi Panas Bumi. The optimum temperature for cocoa drying is 62°C with the moisture content 7% which consumes 78 kW for one tones cocoa dried. Whereas, egg incubation system consists of two chamber with the same temperature 40°C for each room and relative humidity 55% and 70%. For the last stage, Terapi Panas Bumi works in temperature 40°C. Based on the result technical and economical aspect, it exhibits cascade direct use of geothermal energy is very recommended to develop. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Methane is the smallest and cleanest burning fuel. It is found in the form of natural gas in which methane present in bulk but contains many impurities such as CO2, H2S which must be removed before being used by the consumer. In addition, it must be stored efficiently and transported economically. Gas hydrate is proposed to be one of the methods for storage, transportation and separation. A subclass of hydrate known as semiclathrate hydrate is capable of acting as a sieve for different sized gas molecules and have the capability to cohost smaller guest gases of specific size. Theses semiclathrate hydrate can be very useful for gas storage and multicomponent gas separation. In this work, a family of quaternary-ammonium salts such as tetra n-methyl/n-ethyl ammonium bromide (TMAB/TEAB) from the clan of tetra-alkyl ammonium bromide are examined at concentrations of 5wt% and 10 wt% for their phase stability along with the TBAB. Additionally, non-isothermal kinetics have been studied. Various experimental data have been obtained at different initial pressures of 8 MPa, 7.5 MPa, and 5.5 MPa to find out the influence of alkyl chain length on methane hydrate formation. It can be observed from experiential results that both TMAB and TEAB have shown thermodynamic inhibition as compared to TBAB. It can also be concluded from the phase stability curves that TBAB has more potential to aid in methane storage and separation than TMAB and TEAB at moderate pressure and temperature. An effect of carbon alkyl chain length is clearly seen on methane gas consumption. It has been witnessed that gas storage in hydrate increases with increase in the alkyl chain length of the salts. From this study, TBAB has found to be a more promising agent for gas processing and methane storage in the form of gas hydrate. © 2018, Offshore Technology Conference.

Deepwater stimulation: A case study of frac pack modelling in well G1

Field X is an offshore field that is included in the deep-water area managed by an oil and gas company in Indonesia. From a number of tests conducted it was found that are presence of sand problems in this field especially in well G1 so that several studies were conducted. From the results of the study, it is determined that the use of Frac pack is one of the most appropriate ways, besides controlling sand problems, it also increases gas production on field X. The Frac pack method is a well stimulation by combining gravel pack to control the sand problems with hydraulic fracturing which is designed to have high conductivity to increase productivity over the well. In this paper, a calculation model is developed to find out the optimum fracture half length, fracture width and also the pumping schedule of the Frac pack with sensitivity of proppant concentration. Then the results will be compared with existing commercial software. The challenge faced in frac pack modeling for well G1 is large permeability so that the possibility of leakage occurring is greater and then handled by increasing the injection rate. Based on the calculations and analyzes that have been done, for the well G1 on field X it will be optimum to operate if frac pack is installed with the type of brady sand 20/40 proppant and dynafrac HT 30 as fracturing fluid, so that half fracture length, Xf 76.8 ft is obtained with fracture width, wf 0.4355 ft and 5 times fold of increase in the production. From this study it can be concluded that the calculation model made can be accepted and used commercially.

Co-surfactants have an important role to increase oil and reduce the tension between the interface of oil and water. The purpose of this research use of co-surfactants and thermal stability at the laboratory scale. The surfactants used in this study are ABS, MES and SCI with a concentration of 0.3%. The ingredients used were Aquades, NaCL and EGBE. The equipment used in the thermal stability test was the Oven. The thermal stability testing was carried out by the surfactant for 30 days then heated at a temperature of 60°C according to reservoir conditions. Success in testing thermal stability considers compatibility with thermal stability. ABS surfactant on day 1 contained an oil layer while for days 3 to 30 the compatibility was clear and the IFT value obtained was 10-2 dyne/cm. SCI surfactant observation day 3 and 7 day compatibility oil layer so it doesnt resistance to heat stability while on days 1 to 30 the compatibility is clear and the IFT value obtained is 10-2 dyne/cm. MES surfactant observations from day 1 to day 30 obtained a compatible solution and the resulting IFT value is 10-2 dyne/cm but 21 day observation the IFT value obtained is 10−3 dyne/cm. So the surfactant compatible with the use of co-surfactants can affect thermal stability.

Asphaltenes are heavy and polar fractions present in crude oil. Literature survey reveals that studies underlying the effect of individual components of crude oil on hydrate formation are rare. In this work, asphaltene fractions were extracted from a vacuum residue of the crude oil according to method based on IP143/90 (AlHumaidan et al., 2017) and characterized by FTIR, element analysis, SEM and MALDI-TOF MS. Thereafter, the effect of asphaltenes was studied on the phase stability of pure methane hydrate system at 1000 ppm and 10000 ppm concentration. It has been observed that the asphaltene plays an important role in elucidating the phase stability of methane hydrate systems. In this paper, we consider the one-dimensional porous elastic system with mixed dissipation term at the point x= 0 acting only on the volumetric fraction of the system. We prove that the operator A associated with the problem is an infinitesimal generator of a C–semigroup of contractions and we prove the exponential stability if an important restriction is imposed on the constitutive coefficients. © 2020, Università degli Studi di Ferrara.

Droughts are natural hazards that exist in nature and can have a serious impact on the environment and society, which includes water shortages, crop failures, fires and, in some cases, soil manipulation. To assess and predict droughts, various methods, such as the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), were designed to segregate drought trends and excess rainfall over a period ranging from 3 to 48 months. This study proposes an innovative approach to predicting drought use, the Evolutionary Polynomial Expansion with Feature Selection (EPEFS) model, a hybrid method that integrates polynomial regression with feature selection to increase accuracy and interpretability. The methodology was applied to historical precipitation data from six meteorological stations in Türkiye, covering the period from 1971 to 2016. The drought index Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) was used as the primary indicator, with predictions made for three different time scales: SPI-3, SPI-6 and SPI-12. Furthermore, a time series cross-validation strategy was employed to ensure performance assessment. The EPEFS model obtained R 2 coefficients of 0.880, 0.903 and 0.929 for SPI-3, SPI-6 and SPI-12, respectively, surpassing the other models analyzed. Furthermore, the model presented less complexity in the generated expressions. The results suggest that the EPEFS model holds promise as a robust and interpretable tool for drought forecasting, with potential applications in early warning systems and mitigation strategies.

In this study, sugarcane bagasse ash was used to evaluate the physical, mechanical, and microstructural properties of eco-friendly alkali-activated mixtures with blast furnace slag. Net sodium silicate and solid metasilicate were used as activators to produce conventional and one-part alkali-activated mixtures, respectively. Two types of sugarcane bagasse ash were analyzed: raw (as-received) and calcined. The low number of proposed processes reduces the economic aggregate cost of recycled ash. Further, the blast furnace slag replacement ratios of raw and calcined sugarcane bagasse ash were 10%, 30%, 50%, and 70%. Mortars were prepared for the compressive and flexural strength tests, water absorption, and dry density. Alternatively, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetry, infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy were used to assess the chemical, mineralogical, and microstructural properties of the prepared pastes. In addition, the fresh test was performed using the flow table test, wherein the spread diameter decreased as the SBA content increased, primarily on the raw ash owing to its high organic material content. Moreover, compressive strength results showed that the compressive strength increased after 3 days for mixtures with 10% and 30% SBA. However, at 28 days, there was a decrease with an increase in the SBA content. Similar behavior was observed in the flexural strength and water absorption tests. Tests on pastes verified the probable presence of alternative phases besides C-(A)-S-H, such as pectolite, brucite, hydrotalcite, and zeolites. In addition, through the combination of scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy techniques, the presence of preserved cellular structure was observed in the alkali-activated matrix, and Ca/Si and Si/Al ratios were calculated.
