Removal of Hazardous Indigo Carmine Dye from Waste Water Using Treated Red Mud

The present work aims at developing an effective technologies in treating such effluents from Indigo Carmine (IC) dye industry through the use of the industrial wastes such as red mud. Red mud, hazardous aluminium industry waste in its activated form using hydrazine sulphate is employed in the removal of the IC dye by batch adsorption operation. The adsorbent is characterized by FESEM, EDX and FTIR methods and found to be potent enough in up-taking the IC dye. However, sensitivity analysis is carried out in identifying the optimum operating conditions at which the ultimate the adsorption capacity of the red mud is found to be 62.6 mg/g with 94.0% overall removal of the IC dye. The adsorption mechanism is analysed by various adsorption isotherm models and the kinetics of the adsorption process is examined. Further, the thermodynamic investigation projected the operation to be spontaneous and endothermic. Regeneration studies indicated the recyclability of the developed adsorbent with % removals not falling below 85.0% even after five regenerations cycles. However, the adsorbent is tested for its reliability by applying it to the water effluents gathered from commercial IC dye polluting industry and found effective enough in its use as a potential adsorbent in water treatment operations.

petroleum extraction generates large volumes of produced water (PW), which is an effluent containing high concentrations of pollutants that impact the environment and present a significant environmental liability for the fossil fuel industry. Among the various treatment approaches, biological methods—particularly those involving microalgae—have shown promise for PW remediation. In this study, we evaluated the bioremediation potential of PW using a microalga Chlorolobion braunii cultivated in 250 L photobioreactors. C. braunii was cultivated in a mixture containing 50 % PW and 50 % BG-11 (Blue green 11) medium (PW50%), while the control comprised only the BG-11 medium. Results demonstrated high removal efficiencies for nitrate (99.54 %), phosphate (77.78 %), iron (94 %), and manganese (75 %), along with a reduction in alkalinity (61 %). A total of 40 g of biomass was produced using 100 L of PW, containing 8.50 % lipids. This biomass mainly contained palmitic acid (C16:0) and elaidic acid (C18:1ω9t), indicating its suitability for biodiesel production according to the International Quality Standards of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM D6751 ) and the Brazilian National Agency of petroleum, Natural Gas, and Biofuels (ANP). The biomass also yielded 35.12 % bio-oil and 57.69 % non-condensable gases during pyrolysis. Furthermore, 30 g of exopolysaccharides (EPS) were obtained, which exhibited pseudoplastic characteristics—a property of industrial interest. Thus, the treatment using 50 % PW for the cultivation of C. braunii was deemed a promising strategy for bioremediation and facilitated the production of high-value bioproducts.

CO2 storage and its containment security are key concern of a large-scale CCS project. One of the most important parameters affecting the CO2 storage potential is CO2/brine interfacial tension. In this work, we use low salinity surfactant nanofluids to demonstrate its potential application for CO2 storage at high pressure and temperature conditions by significantly lowering CO2/brine interfacial tension. The present work gives novel insight on the use of nanoparticles in CO2 storage application. We use Sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS) surfactant and ZrO2 nanoparticles for our formulation. Determination of interfacial tension were carried out using pendent drop method at 20 MPa and 70 °C and drop shape analysis were carried out using pendant drop plugin of Image J software. © 2018 European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers, EAGE. Mechanistic multiphase flow modeling: A new approach for gas lift design using dimensionless scaling curve for tubing size optimization

Gas lift is one of the most popular artificial lift methods available in the oil and gas industry. It relies on reducing fluid density, henceforth reducing the pressure gradient along the wellbore and eventually enables liquid to be lifted at ease. As Indonesia’s oil fields are reaching mature state, optimization in artificial lift method is one of the most feasible actions and it carries lower risk compared to injecting foreign substance into the reservoir. Previous efforts in optimizing gas lift design has been revolving around the application of Gas Lift Performance (GLP) curves, where changes in oil recovery is monitored as a function of gas injected. As established as this method nowadays, it still carries a heavy burden when dynamic pressure and rate changes should accounted in a very small time step. Therefore, the application of mechanistic modeling can be an alternative to reduce complexity in modeling dynamic GLP curves. This research presents a novel extension of Flow Pattern Map (FPM) as a function of tubing size in order to map optimum injection gas rate. A new correlation is also presented as a correction factor for highly utilized tubing sizes in oil and gas industry, therefore increasing the versatility of FPM application in gas lift optimization.

A reservoir is the main asset of a geothermal business. Decreasing reservoir performance affects the sustainability of production in the future. In planning future production strategies, forecasting production projections are used with the assumption of particular parameter values. A reservoir is a porous media with a heterogeneous nature with a high degree of uncertainty, so using a specific production forecasting method's assumption parameter becomes inaccurate. This study aims to develop alternative methods for optimizing and estimating geothermal production by eliminating assumptions. Artificial intelligence (AI) is an alternative method that can be used to predict reservoir productions that has properties with a high degree of uncertainty and can be used to optimize production. The AI model was created using measurement data of production parameters at the steam dominated geothermal field in Patuha, Indonesia. AI models in estimating geothermal reservoir production are more accurate in calculating production projections because they use real field data and eliminate assumptions.

Updated Geologic Structures and Stratigraphy of the Darajat Geothermal Field in Indonesia

The main objectives of the evaluation of the geologic structures and stratigraphy of the Darajat geothermal field are to refine and update both the Darajat conceptual and geologic1 models. Re-interpretation of the borehole image logs, additional petrographic analysis of rock cuttings and cores, integration of subsurface data from the wells drilled during 2009-2011, and recent resource observations allowed definition of at least seven (7) lithologic units based on the dominant rock type. The updated stratigraphy of the reservoir was correlated with the surface rocks to develop a volcano-stratigraphy and geochronology of the Darajat geothermal system. The andesite-intrusive complex, which comprises the Darajat geothermal reservoir and the hypothesized sub-volcanic portion of an earlier liquid-dominated geothermal system, belongs to the Kendang Volcanics and makes up subsurface Units A and B. The interpretation of the major volcano-tectonic features and structures at Darajat was refined through the analysis of the Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) data/imagery that was acquired in 2014. The LIDAR Digital Elevation Model (DEM) hill-shade map shows several conspicuous volcanic vents in Puncak Cae, Gagak and Kiamis. The prominent Kendang Fault, which extends to the Kamojang Field in the northeast, might be a section of the ring structure of an earlier volcano, herein, called Kendang. Wellbore image data from several wells suggest that the Kendang Fault may dip at 70° eastward. Although needing further substantiation, we hypothesize that the decompression event that preceded the development of the steam-dominated geothermal reservoir at present might be related to the eruption of the Kendang volcano. The Gagak Fault is another prominent surface structure and believed to form during the eruption of the resurgent Gagak volcano after the eruption of the older Kendang volcano.

The main issue in the management of the two-phase liquid-dominated geothermal field is rapid decline pressure in the reservoir so that the supply of steam to the power plant cannot be fulfilled. To understanding that, modelling and numerical simulation used reservoir simulators. The model is developed on liquid-dominated geothermal fields are assessed in various scenarios of production strategies (focusing only steam cap, brine reservoir and a combination) and injection strategies (deep and shallow injection, centered and dispersed injection), with the calculation using separated steam cycle method. The simulation results of the model for sustainable production are production 25% from steam cap + 75% from brine reservoir, dispersed and deep reinjection with make-up wells from steam cap results 9 make-up well number. The implementation of production-injection strategy needs to be planned right from the beginning of exploitation so that the strategy can adapt to changes in reservoir characteristics. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Geothermal bussiness nowadays needs to be accelerated in a way that profit can be obtained as soon as reasonable possible. One of the many ways to do this is by using one of geothermal wellhead generating unit (GWGU), called backpressure turbine. Backpressure turbine can be used in producing electricity as soon as there is productive or rather small-scale productive well existed after finished drilling. In a vapor dominated system, steam fraction in the wellhead capable to produce electricity based on each well productivity immediately. The advantage for using vapor dominated system is reduce brine disposal in the wellhead so it will be a cost benefit in operation. The design and calculation for backpressure turbine will use probablistic approach with Monte Carlo simulation. The parameter that will be evaluated in sensitivity would be steam flow rate, turbine inlet pressure, and turbine exhaust pressure/atmospheric pressure. The result are probability for P10, P50, and P90 of gross power output which are 1.78 MWe, 2.22 MWe and 2.66 Mwe respectively. Whereas the P10, P50, and P90 of SSC are 4.67 kg/s/MWe, 5.19 kg/s/MWe and 5.78 kg/s/MWe respectively. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

After commissioning of a power plant, geothermal reservoir will encounter pressure decline, which will affect wells productivity. Therefore, further drilling is carried out to enhance steam production. Make-up wells are production wells drilled inside an already confirmed reservoir to maintain steam production in a certain level. Based on Sanyal (2004), geothermal power cost consists of three components, those are capital cost, O&M cost and make-up drilling cost. The make-up drilling cost component is a major part of power cost which will give big influence in a whole economical value of the project. The objective of this paper it to analyse the make-up wells drilling cost component in financial model of a geothermal power project. The research will calculate make-up wells requirements, drilling costs as a function of time and how they influence the financial model and affect the power cost. The best scenario in determining make-up wells strategy in relation with the project financial model would be the result of this research. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
