Updating Hypocenter Relocation in Indonesia using 3D Seismic Velocity Model: Period of April 2009-March 2018

In the past 2 years, we have been conducting routine hypocenter relocation in Indonesia. We compiled and conducted hypocenter relocation of ~50.000 events from a magnitude of 1.4 to 8.5 recorded by 451 stations around and outside Indonesia region. We used local, regional, and teleseismic arrival time data from Indonesian Agency of Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG) catalog from April 2009 to March 2018. We performed teleseismic double-difference relocation inversion using our previous study of 3D seismic velocity model beneath the Indonesian region with grid size 1 by 1 for inside Indonesia region and 1D global seismic velocity model from AK135 for outside Indonesia region. This method improved limitation from BMKG earthquake data catalog in which events were recorded from scattered seismic station array and insufficient azimuthal gap around Indonesia. Our results show that travel-time RMS residuals were greatly reduced compared to those of the BMKG catalog and the hypocenter location shows significant improvement, refining to the geological structure, especially trench and major faults. These hypocenter relocation results can be helpful for another seismic study in Indonesia region that required a precise hypocenter location e.g. body wave tomography and probability seismic hazard analysis.

A pilot Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project in Indonesia is planned to be implemented in Gundih area, Central Java Province in Indonesia. Prior to conducting CO2 injection, reservoir characterisations have to study thoroughly to assure that the reservoir is to meet with CCS standard requirements. The Jepon well in the Gundih fied was proposed as a suitable site for CO2 injection. The decision was made to proceed with a comprehensive site assessment and geological modelling of the Jepon area. This site was selected based on the reason the presence of a potentially suitable reservoir (Ngrayong Sandstone) and primary and secondary seals (Bulu Limestone and Wonocolo claystone). Using logging data, petrophysics and rock physics model are used to evaluate potential of the CO2 injection site. Permeability results from petrophysics calculations and recent injection tests show very small; whilst porosity is relatively high. This can be caused by fractures mostly are not connected. Hence, rock physics for the reservoir is evaluated and modelled as anisotropy or Vertical Tranverse Isotropy (VTI) in which fractures with preferred orientation. Stiffness calculations for VTI medium with different aspect ratio shows consistent with low permeability result.

Surface and Subsurface Fracture Zones Modeling Using Automatic Lineament Analysis and Geostatistical Method, with Case Study of Wayang Windu Geothermal Field, West Java, Indonesia

Geological structures such as faults and fractures in a geothermal prospect area might be an indication of a permeable zone for geothermal fluids through fractures that appear inside the rocks. Such geological structures can be identified by lineaments in satellite images and aerial photographs. In this study, we determine the effect of pixel size on the results of automatic lineament extraction and examine the relationship between lineaments at the Wayang Windu geothermal field (WWGF) and nearby geothermal areas, automated lineament results which were extracted from digital elevation models (DEMs) with pixel sizes of 0.5 m, 1 m, 2 m, 3 m, 4 m, 5 m, 10 m, 15 m, and 20 m based on aerial photographs, DEM Nasional (DEMNAS) images, and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) images. Under similar parameters, larger pixel sizes revealed fewer and longer lineaments than smaller pixel sizes. The type of image (i.e., satellite images or aerial photographs) used for lineament extraction did not affect the results. Based on lineament density maps, the lineaments from images with smaller pixels had a wider distribution area than those with larger pixels. Surface geothermal manifestations, such as hot springs, showed good correlation with lineaments found in images with smaller pixel sizes (≤ 5m), which were found in moderate to high lineament density zones. Based on the lineaments extracted from SRTM images, each geothermal field in southern Bandung (Patuha, WWGF, Darajat, Kamojang) had a local geological structure that greatly correlated with the lineament extraction results. All of the lineaments in the geothermal fields were primarily oriented in the NE–SW direction (i.e., N65°E for Patuha, N51°E for WWGF, N57°E for Darajat, and N24°E for Kamojang). A Non-Linear Method for Hypocenter Determination around Central and East Java Region: Preliminary Result

Java Island is highly active tectonic zone and also has a complex geological system as a result of Indo-Australian plate that subducted under the Eurasian plate. This complexity produces many large and destructive earthquakes. Moreover, Java is a most densely populated region in Indonesia. The precise earthquake location can define and evaluate the seismic hazard in the area. In this study, we determined hypocenter location around the central and east Java region by using a non-linear method. We manually picked P-and S-wave arrival time recorded by BMKG network for the time period of 2009 to 2017. We used the minimum 1D seismic velocity model of ak135 to locate the events. We used some criteria for the determination of event location including (i) at least recorded by 4 station which has clear onset P and S arrival, and (ii) has magnitude (MW) > 3. The seismicity in the study area is controlled by subduction and many active faults distributed along the Java Island, also clustered in several areas such as Kendeng thrust, Opak river fault, Kebumen, Banyuwangi, and others. The result of this study indicates the accurately main shallow seismicity zones in central and eastern part of Java region, and also confirm the presence of active inland faults. As further studies, we will conduct 1D velocity modeling and relocate the hypocenters using an updated local 1D velocity model beneath the study area.

The growing use of synthetic chemical compounds/substances in vector control of mosquitoes, associated with their adverse effects on the environment and non-target organisms, has demanded the development of eco-friendly alternatives. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the larvicidal action of different cellulose microcrystalline (CMs) concentrations and investigate their toxicity mechanisms in Culex quinquefasciatus fourth instar larvae as a model species. Probit analysis revealed that the median lethal concentrations (LC) for 24 h and 36 h exposure were 100 and 58.29 mg/L, respectively. We also showed that such concentrations induced a redox imbalance in the larvae, marked by an increase in the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), as well as a reduction in the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT). Furthermore, different alterations in the external morphology of the larvae were associated with the ingestion of CMs. On the other hand, exposure of adult zebrafish (Danio rerio) to LC24h and LC36h for seven days did not induce any behavioral changes or alterations mutagenic, genotoxic, biochemical, or in the production of cytokines IFN-γ and IL-10. Thus, taken together, our study demonstrates for the first time that the use of CMs can constitute a promising strategy in the control of C. quinquefasciatus larvae, combining insecticidal efficiency with an "eco-friendly" approach in the fight against an important mosquito vector of several human diseases.

Western Java Ambient Noise Tomography: A Preliminary Result

Western Java, Indonesia, has at least three important active faults: the Cimandiri, Lembang, and Baribis Faults, which pose a great danger for the cities near them. It is crucial to have a better understanding of shallow crustal structure to delineate active faults and deep basins in order to support seismic hazard and disaster mitigation efforts in Indonesia. In this study, we perform ambient seismic noise tomography which can give better resolution of the shallow structure beneath western Java. We have deployed a seismometer network in the western to central Java region through a research collaboration program between the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and the Australian National University (ANU). We deployed 70 seismometer stations from June to January 2017 to acquire ambient seismic noise data. As the first stage of the data processing, we will focus on conducting single data preparation and cross-correlation to retrieve an estimate of Green's functions between station pairs. We also use the frequency-time analysis technique to obtain dispersion curves to measure the interstation group velocity. The group velocity is use as an input in tomography inversion. Our preliminary results show low velocity anomalies associated with sedimentary basins and a high velocity anomaly associated with the southern mountains.

Determining Source Model and Aftershocks of 2006 Yogyakarta Earthquake, Indonesia using Coulomb Stress Change

On 26 May 2006 at 22:53:59 UTC, an earthquake with moment magnitude of 6.4 occurred in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The source of the event is still debatable. Some believe the event was caused by the reactivation of the Opak Fault which has a left-lateral type movement. Previous studies indicated there are two possibilities to explain the mechanism of the Yogyakarta earthquake. First is based on the focal mechanism from NIED (National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster) Japan which indicated that the event occurred in an oblique reverse slip. This model states that the complex Opak fault is a flower structure (strike-slip) type. Second is based on NEIC (National Earthquake Information Center) US which indicated that the event was caused by a pure strike-slip fault (active Opak fault). The May 26th earthquake triggered many aftershock events around the old Opak fault. The majority of aftershock events on 3-6 June 2006 were located around 5 km east of Opak fault. It has a trendline of N45°E and lies parallel with the Opak fault. We use Coulomb Stress change to determine which type of source model fit better the aftershocks pattern. The target fault for Coulomb Stress analysis is a left lateral pure strike slip with an orientation of N45°E/90°SE.

Impact of The 2004 Sumatra-Andaman Earthquake to The Stress Heterogeneity and Seismicity Pattern in Nothern Sumatra, Indonesia

Sumatra Island is a highly seismic active region due to its close location to the convergent zone between the Indo-Australian and Eurasian plates, and the existence of the Great Sumatran Fault (GSF). These conditions caused the island of Sumatra suffered from hundreds of earthquakes with Mw > 4 per year. Particularly, a 9.0 Mw Sumatra-Andaman 2004 earthquake occured in northern Sumatra which changed the in-situ stress and seismicity pattern. In such case, quantifying the tectonic stress perturbation prior and after 2004 Sumatra-Andaman earthquake is becoming key issue in assessing the seismic hazard. To invert the in-situ stress information in Sumatra, first we identify the fault plane from its auxiliary plane in the focal mechanism solutions using the fault instability criterion. There are 354 focal mechanisms data of earthquake with Mw > 5 and focal depths < 250 km along northern Sumatra Island from 1976 to 2010. This catalogue was compiled by combining the data from Global Centroid Moment Tensor (GCMT) catalogue and the International Seismological Centre (ISC) bulletin. We then divided the focal mechanism catalogue into two parts, i.e. prior and after Sumatra-Andaman 2004 earthquake. An iterative joint inversion is then implemented to estimate the in-situ stress orientation and its magnitude ratio. The in-situ principal stress orientation and magnitude ratio obtained from this study will be used to build a Sumatran stress map and its correlation with the seismicity pattern variations in the region. Our results produce remarkable changes of maximum principal stress orientation after 2004 megathrust earthquakes along the region. As the seismic hazard potential is controlled by stress concentration, the obtained results from this study could also be used further for seismic hazard mitigation in northern Sumatra.

The increasing population at Teluk Pemedas and Sanipah coastal areas of Kutai Kartanegara Regency, East Kalimantan Province, has led to coastal degradation. The problem was mainly caused by conversion of mangrove into aquaculture, agriculture, plantation industrial, and residential areas. This research was a study case, used descriptive analysis to describe the local fishermen activity using belat traditional device to catch fish. The results revealed that there were many fishermen still did not know the benefits of mangrove for economy growth, ecological, ecotourism etc. This condition affects to the decline of the mangrove function. Fisherman who used belat often move from one location to another location in order to find places that have many catches. The belat which are placed in good environment mangrove areas produces lots of catches that greatly benefit the fisherman, therefore mangrove ecosystem must be well preserved for the sustainability of fishermen's efforts to earn a living. © 2018 The Authors, published by EDP Sciences.

Near-surface S-wave Estimation base on Inversion of Rayleigh Wave Dispersion Curve Using Genetic Algorithm

Multi-channel analysis of surface wave (MASW) is a suitable technique to infer shallow structure of vertical shear-wave velocity profile from seismic record data. The processing stage is focused on obtaining the reliable dispersion curves, and the final stage of the method is that to obtain the shear velocity model that can explain the observation. The genetic algorithm (GA) method, one of the global optimization approaches, has been implemented to obtain shear wave model from Rayleigh wave dispersion curve. The GA method mimic biological evolution in order to obtain the optimum solution. Application of GA method to two synthetic models for normal velocity profile and low velocity anomaly give good results indicated with small misfit. Finally, we demonstrate the GA to Rayleigh dispersion curve for real data which calculated by using phase-shift method.
