Preferential Surface Decoration of Supported Co Catalysts with Pt for Aromatic Saturation

To explore the ideal architecture of Pt-Co bimetallic catalyst for aromatics saturation, various Pt-Co bimetallic catalysts were synthesized via the galvanic replacement, the co-impregnation, and the sequential impregnation methods, and were characterized by CO chemisorption, transmission electron microscopy(TEM), H_2-temperature-programmed reduction(H_2-TPR), H_2-temperature-programmed desorption(H_2-TPD), X-ray fluorescence(XRF) spectrometry, and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy(ICP-AES), while the catalysts were evaluated by the flow reactor study of toluene hydrogenation. These characterization results suggest that the surface decoration of Pt has little influence on the number of active sites located on the surfaces of the reduced Co-based catalysts, but can greatly suppress the oxidation of Co at room temperature and provide the activated hydrogen at a relatively low temperature. It is demonstrated that their chemical properties and catalytic performance are largely dependent on the location of Pt atoms in the bimetallic catalysts. The architecture of Pt-Co bimetallic catalyst consisting of Co/SiO_2 decorated with 0.3% of Pt, with the most of Pt atoms being situated on the surfaces of Co nanoparticles, is the active structure for aromatic saturation and has the maximum utilization of Pt.

We observed 754 microearthquake data by at least 15 stations for six months as a tool to monitor and characterize the subsurface condition in two-phase geothermal field in Southern Bandung. The data were reduced to 417 events having azimuthal gap less than 180°. We determine the initial earthquake locations in this study by using Geiger method and we update the hypocenter locations by performing simultaneous inversion for hypocenters and 1D velocity structure followed by 3D tomographic inversion. We obtained the velocity structure by utilizing TomoDD to perform 3D tomographic inversion. There are four clusters of seismicity observed in this study which we suspected related to the injection, production, and tectonic activity of the study area. The southern cluster is consistent with the location of injection wells and spread from 1 km depth to 8 km depth, indicating that MEQ events were triggered by injection activity. The production area is characterized by a denser population of events and the events were distributed closely ranging from 1 to 3 km depth. We suspect that the third cluster is caused by development activity of steam dominated geothermal field omit in the east of our main field. The fourth cluster is located in the southernmost of our area and suspected caused by tectonic activity. Low Vp/Vs values near to the surface are observed in the north direction and coincide with the location of the first cluster. The location of anomaly is highly corresponded with the production area and the low value of Vp/Vs anomaly is interpreted as the steam zone. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd. All rights reserved.

Caprock integrity is a critical factor in geological carbon storage (GCS) and hydrogen storage (GHS), as it ensures containment assurance, environmental and safety considerations, storage efficiency, risk mitigation, long-term viability, public and regulatory confidence, economic considerations, and informed decision-making. Caprock can break mechanically by radial cracking, plastic deformation, inner and outrebounding, and channeling. Understanding these failure mechanisms is crucial, but traditional deformation tracking methods have limitations. To address this gap, this study utilizes three-dimensional digital image correlation (3D-DIC) to investigate the deformation and failure of caprock specimens from GCS and GHS, thereby ensuring their integrity. Caprock samples were compressed diametrically using a precision 100 kN electromechanical load frame moving at 0.05 mm/min. There were a variety of minerals in the samples that were examined. During the diametrical compression testing, a 3D-DIC system was set up to monitor the samples without touching them at a rate of 10 frames per second. A black-and-white speckle pattern is applied to the specimen to monitor its deformation under stress. The 3D-DIC system is used to process, visualize, and analyze caprock sample damage under varied load conditions. A load-strain relationship was established by integrating several factors: 1) DIC-generated horizontal, vertical, and shear strain maps, providing insight into the sequence of strain development and fracture occurrences attributed to pre-existing or natural fractures, anisotropy, heterogeneity, laminations, faults, cracks, or channeling. 2) The results demonstrated a 4-stage deformation evolution process: initial, linear elastic, elastic-plastic, and plastic damage. 3) Additionally, the study illustrated the failure process of caprock samples, yielding tension and compression within ±0.05%, shear within ±0.001%, and a tension-compression ratio ranging from 1% to 5%. 4) t

Advising is an important task for success of college students, especially students with professional majors, such as engineering. In addition to meeting the breadth of a college education, students in a professional major must also complete depth of study in math and science and the application of this knowledge in professional development. The requirements are strict and the sequencing of courses is critical for both academic success and efficiency in graduating by the desired date. Advisors are more than schedulers of classes. The selection and scheduling of classes should be efficient so both the student and the advisor can focus on issues critical to the academic success of the student. In a global sense, advisors provide the service of career development ranging in process from selection of major to professional development and management of a system of life-long learning. This paper identifies the duties of a modern advisor and discusses the advising process with the aid of web-based tools to increase both the efficiency and quality of advisement. Applications of this technology in the College of engineering at Texas Tech University have been very successful. Students appreciate the quickness of the process and the ability to consider and plan all activities - not just the courses. Advisors are also happy with the shift away from scheduling and toward professional and personal issues that promote long-term academic and professional success.

The implementation of cyclic gas injection, commonly known as huff-n-puff, holds significant promise in augmenting hydrocarbon recovery from shale oil reservoirs and addressing condensate blockage in liquid-rich shale formations. The effectiveness of huff-n-puff, however, depends greatly on the composition of both the reservoir fluid and the injected gas. Particularly in ultratight shale reservoirs, where diffusion and sorption play pivotal roles, a precise understanding of their influence on huff-n-puff performance becomes crucial for accurate predictions of oil recovery and solvent retention. To thoroughly assess the huff-n-puff process in shale reservoirs, we conducted extensive large-scale numerical simulations using a dual-porosity naturally fractured compositional model that incorporates molecular diffusion and sorption mechanisms. The Langmuir's adsorption model was employed to account for adsorption effects within the system. Rigorous grid block sensitivity analysis was performed to minimize numerical errors and enhance simulation accuracy. By evaluating the impact of diffusion and sorption on production performance for different fluid and injection gas combinations, we established correlations between the considered characteristics and the huff-n-puff performance. To conduct this evaluation, we selected the Eagle Ford Formation, a highly developed shale with a wide range of pressure-volume-temperature (PVT) windows, from dry gas to black oil. The simulation outcomes revealed that methane (CH4) and cyclic-produced gas exhibited the highest recovery potential, while carbon dioxide (CO2) yielded the lowest production results. The performance of the solvent was notably influenced by the content of light components in the fluid and the gas-oil ratio (GOR). Neglecting molecular diffusion, especially during the soaking period, led to underestimation of recovery factors, whereas disregarding the adsorption effect resulted in overestimation of recovery. Geothermal resources are worldwide renowned for their sustainable and clean attributes. The US Department of Energy (DOE) estimates that harnessing only 0.1% of Earth's geothermal energy could support mankind for two million years. Enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) are highly acclaimed for their ability to extract heat from hot, dry rock. However, issues remain in assuring safe drilling and proper fracturing owing to a lack of knowledge of damage factors and fracture sequences, both of which are crucial for regulating crack propagation. Conventional laboratory approaches often fail to capture the nuanced variation seen in HDR. To address this, the present work uses a three-dimensional optical approach called digital image correlation (3D-DIC) to investigate damage factors in HDR. HDR samples from the DOE UTAH FORGE project's Well 16B (78)-32 are subjected to uniaxial (D 1.5", L 2") and diametrical (D 1.5", L 1") compression using a 100kN precision electro-mechanical load Instron frame at a constant displacement rate of 0.05mm/min. During the uniaxial and diametrical compression studies, a Trilion 3D-DIC image capturing system was used to monitor the samples at a rate of 10 frames per second in a non-contact manner. To monitor deformation during loading, a black-in-white speckle pattern is placed on the specimen. The GOM 3D-DIC system is used to process images, visualize data, and analyze HDR damage variables under various load circumstances. The findings showed that DIC-generated quantitative full-field strain preliminary maps (tension, compression, and shear) include all sequences involved in the damage process as well as discrete strain localization zones (SLZ). Damage factors are quantified using DIC maps to assess sample damage;the tension-compression ratio ranges between 2% and 8%. The petroleum industry has long grappled with the assessment of the value of technology and its role in corporate strategies. Over the past 2 decades, the questions posed by who pays for, who owns, and who benefits from technology have created an increasingly fractured view of new product development. This has created a paradoxical environment in which E&P technology funding is declining at a time when the incentive for developing new technology has never been *** value of E&P technology is well documented. In the 1990s, three significant new technologies changed the landscape of the industry. Multiple streamers deployed in the acquisition of 3D seismic dramatically reduced the cost of high-quality data. The creation of multiclient libraries made it possible for smaller independent operators to play in the same league with supermajors in geographic domains such as the Gulf of Mexico. Horizontal drilling, including logging-while-drilling and geosteering tools, made it possible to drill “designer” wells in complicated offshore environments and substantially increase the rate of recovery in ordinary reservoirs. Finally, subsea and deepwater technologies allowed the industry to access reserves in unprecedented water depths. Coupled with seismic and drilling advances, deepwater offshore fields were placed in production at costs lower than anyone could have imagined a decade earlier. One supermajor reported that real finding and development costs and operating expenses per barrel dropped by more than 50% from 1985 to 1995. The steam and water relative permeabilities at The Geysers and Salton Sea geothermal reservoirs were calculated from available production data. A method was used to estimate the relative permeability curves using Darcy's law from mass production rates of steam and water that are available from the DOGGR database. A verification was also conducted using data measured in laboratory steam-water flow experiments. The laboratory results show good agreement with the relative permeabilities calculated from a standard Darcy's Law approach. The water saturation estimated from the production data (i.e. the flowing water saturation) was found to be a significant underestimate compared to the in-place (static) saturation. From the laboratory experiments, the relationship between the flowing water saturation and the in-place water saturation was developed. The relative permeability curves inferred from field production data, corrected to static saturation, show a behavior that is very similar to that seen in laboratory experiments.

Fuel cell membranes can be used in various ways to achieve zero-emission transport and energy systems, which offer a promising way to power production due to their higher efficiency compared to the internal combustion engine and the eco-environment. Perfluoro sulfonic acid membranes used for proton exchange membranes (PEMs) have certain drawbacks, like higher fuel permeability and expense, lower mechanical and chemical durability, and proton conductivity under low humidity and above 80 °C temperature. Researchers have drawn their attention to the production of polymer electrolyte membranes with higher proton conductivity, thermal and chemical resilience, maximum power density, lower fuel permeability, and lower expense. For sustainable clean energy generation, a review covering the most useful features of advanced material-associated membranes would be of great benefit to all interested communities. This paper endeavors to explore several types of novel inorganic fillers and crosslinking agents, which have been incorporated into membrane matrices to design the desired properties for an advanced fuel cell system. Membrane parameters such as proton conductivity, the ability of H 2 transport, and the stability of the membrane are described. Research directions for developing fuel cell membranes are addressed based on several challenges suggested. The technological advancement of nanostructured materials for fuel cell applications is believed to significantly promote the future clean energy generation technology in practice.
