Cyclic pressure pulsing with nitrogen is studied for hydraulically fractured wells in depleted reservoirs.A compositional simulation model is constructed to represent the hydraulic fractures through local-grid *** process is analyzed from both operational and reservoir/hydraulic-fracture *** sensitivity parameters for the operational component are chosen as the injection rate,lengths of injection and soaking periods and the economic rate limit to shut-in the *** the reservoir/hydraulic fracturing components,reservoir permeability,hydraulic fracture permeability,effective thickness and half-length are *** parameters are varied at five levels.A full-factorial experimental design is utilized to run 1250 *** study shows that within the ranges studied,the gas-injection process is applied successfully for a 20-year project period with net present values based on the incremental recoveries greater than *** is observed that the cycle rate limit,injection and soaking periods must be optimized to maximize the *** simulation results are used to develop a neural network based proxy model that can be used as a screening tool for the *** proxy model is validated with blind-cases with a correlation coefficient of 0.96.

The use of the supplementary controllers of a unified power flow controller (UPFC) to damp low frequency oscillations is investigated. The potential of the UPFC supplementary controllers to enhance the dynamic stability is evaluated by measuring the electromechanical controllability through singular value decomposition (SVD) analysis. Individual designs of the UPFC controllers using particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique are discussed. A nonlinear, time-domain objective function is considered. The effectiveness of the proposed controllers on damping low frequency oscillations is tested through eigenvalue analysis and non-linear time simulation. For comparison, power system stabilizer (PSS) performance is also included.

Krakatau is one of the volcano in Indonesia which has the destructive paroxysmal eruption. Eruption on 1883 was estimated had VEI of 6. The eruption was recorded as one among some most violent volcanic eruption event in the world. Gravity method is one of the geophysical methods that could delineate the subsurface structure base on density variation. Therefore, the objectives of this research are to reconstruct the 3D subsurface structure of the Krakatau volcano especially the approximate location and dimension of the magma chamber. The subsurface model of Krakatau was done by 3D modelling using residual anomaly map. In order to develop the status of magma chamber model, the available information on the geological map of Krakatau and surrounding area was used. Besides that, some information relative to the volcano such as the information derived from earthquake wave attenuation were utilized. The result of the study shows that position its volcano magma chamber is not directly vertical or oblique under the volcano crater and it has multiple chambers which trending northwest-southeast. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd. West Sumatera is a province which has a huge geothermal potential - approximately 6% of Indonesia's total geothermal potential which equals to 1,656 MWe. One of the significant reserves located in Bonjol subdistrict which accounts for more than 50 MWe. The energy from geothermal manifestation in Bonjol can be utilized prior to indirect development. Manifestation at the rate 3 kg/s and 87 °C will flow to cascading system consisting several applications, arranged in order from high to low temperature to efficiently use the excessive energy. The direct use application selected is based on the best potential commodities as well as temperature constraint of heat source. The objective of this paper is to perform a conceptual design for the first cascade direct use of geothermal energy in Indonesia to establish Bonjol Smart Geo-Energy Village which will be transformed as the center of agricultural, stockbreeding, tourism as well as cultural site. A comprehenssive research was performed through remote survey area, evaluation featured product, analysis of heat loss and heat exchange in cascade system. From potential commodities, the three applications selected are cocoa drying and egg hatching incubation machine as well as new tourism site called Terapi Panas Bumi. The optimum temperature for cocoa drying is 62°C with the moisture content 7% which consumes 78 kW for one tones cocoa dried. Whereas, egg incubation system consists of two chamber with the same temperature 40°C for each room and relative humidity 55% and 70%. For the last stage, Terapi Panas Bumi works in temperature 40°C. Based on the result technical and economical aspect, it exhibits cascade direct use of geothermal energy is very recommended to develop. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Methane is the smallest and cleanest burning fuel. It is found in the form of natural gas in which methane present in bulk but contains many impurities such as CO2, H2S which must be removed before being used by the consumer. In addition, it must be stored efficiently and transported economically. Gas hydrate is proposed to be one of the methods for storage, transportation and separation. A subclass of hydrate known as semiclathrate hydrate is capable of acting as a sieve for different sized gas molecules and have the capability to cohost smaller guest gases of specific size. Theses semiclathrate hydrate can be very useful for gas storage and multicomponent gas separation. In this work, a family of quaternary-ammonium salts such as tetra n-methyl/n-ethyl ammonium bromide (TMAB/TEAB) from the clan of tetra-alkyl ammonium bromide are examined at concentrations of 5wt% and 10 wt% for their phase stability along with the TBAB. Additionally, non-isothermal kinetics have been studied. Various experimental data have been obtained at different initial pressures of 8 MPa, 7.5 MPa, and 5.5 MPa to find out the influence of alkyl chain length on methane hydrate formation. It can be observed from experiential results that both TMAB and TEAB have shown thermodynamic inhibition as compared to TBAB. It can also be concluded from the phase stability curves that TBAB has more potential to aid in methane storage and separation than TMAB and TEAB at moderate pressure and temperature. An effect of carbon alkyl chain length is clearly seen on methane gas consumption. It has been witnessed that gas storage in hydrate increases with increase in the alkyl chain length of the salts. From this study, TBAB has found to be a more promising agent for gas processing and methane storage in the form of gas hydrate. © 2018, Offshore Technology Conference.

Java Island is highly active tectonic zone and also has a complex geological system as a result of Indo-Australian plate that subducted under the Eurasian plate. This complexity produces many large and destructive earthquakes. Moreover, Java is a most densely populated region in Indonesia. The precise earthquake location can define and evaluate the seismic hazard in the area. In this study, we determined hypocenter location around the central and east Java region by using a non-linear method. We manually picked P-and S-wave arrival time recorded by BMKG network for the time period of 2009 to 2017. We used the minimum 1D seismic velocity model of ak135 to locate the events. We used some criteria for the determination of event location including (i) at least recorded by 4 station which has clear onset P and S arrival, and (ii) has magnitude (MW) > 3. The seismicity in the study area is controlled by subduction and many active faults distributed along the Java Island, also clustered in several areas such as Kendeng thrust, Opak river fault, Kebumen, Banyuwangi, and others. The result of this study indicates the accurately main shallow seismicity zones in central and eastern part of Java region, and also confirm the presence of active inland faults. As further studies, we will conduct 1D velocity modeling and relocate the hypocenters using an updated local 1D velocity model beneath the study area. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd. All rights reserved.

We recently proposed a new method to identify the permeability of a porous medium (Zhan & Yortsos, 2000). The technique relies on the analysis of passive tracer arrival times, which may be measured by computerized tomography in a core laboratory or by 4-D seismic method in a field application. In this paper, we study the sensitivity to errors in arrival time and to boundary pressure errors of the identified permeability. Gaussian random errors are added to the synthetic tracer arrival time and boundary pressure data. These data are then used in the new approach to invert permeability. It is shown that for correlated log-normal heterogeneity the directly inverted permeability captures major heterogeneity features of the actual permeability, even for large percentage errors in the arrival times and boundary pressures.

We study the linear stability of a two-phase heat pipe zone (vapor-liquid counterflow) in a porous medium, overlying a superheated vapor zone. The competing effects of gravity, condensation and heat transfer on the stability of a planar base state are analyzed in the linear stability limit. The rate of growth of unstable disturbances is expressed in terms of the wave number of the disturbance, and dimensionless numbers, such as the Rayleigh number, a dimensionless heat flux and other parameters. A critical Rayleigh number is identified and shown to be different than in natural convection under single phase conditions. The results find applications to geothermal systems, to enhanced oil recovery using steam injection, as well as to the conditions of the proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository. This study complements recent work of the stability of boiling by Ramesh and Torrance (1993).

Downhole drilling dynamic data has proven to be valuable operational information for vibration mitigation and drilling optimization. Yet, the downhole dynamic behavior of the BHA is often misinterpreted. Most downscaled experimental investigations neglect the changes in dynamic field conditions due to fluid flow. The objective of this work is to establish a visual understanding of downhole vibration data analysis in the presence of fully circulated fluid flow and to investigate the effect of flow rate on the BHA lateral trajectory, using a scaled laboratory BHA. A mechanically downscaled test assembly adhering to the geometric and material property relations of a field-size BHA section was designed and manufactured to investigate the nature of lateral vibration under field-like fluid flow conditions. Axial excitation and rotation were induced respectively using an electromagnetic shaker and an electrical motor. Fluid was pumped through the BHA using an electric pump and an in-house designed swivel. The BHA trajectory was mapped using inductive displacement sensors mounted outside the transparent wellbore structure for direct visual correlation between the BHA movement and the vibration data. Real-time induced bit vibration was observed and recorded using a high-frequency tri-axial accelerometer. The results from this experiment provide precise and insightful visual information for BHA trajectory correlation with the acceleration data acquired under field-like fluid flow conditions. The BHA vibration behavior of high-frequency accelerations (shock and vibration), critical lateral vibration phenomena such as whirling, and shift in dominant vibration frequencies were characterized based on both the nature of dynamic forces at the bit and fluid flow rates. Axial structural damping behavior induced by internal friction and viscoelastic properties of polymeric layers may have an inevitable influence on the global analysis of flexible *** order to characterize this phenomenon and axial mechanical responses,a full-scale axial tensile experiment on a complex flexible pipe is conducted at room temperature,in which oscillation forces at different frequencies are applied on the *** parameters to be identified are axial strains which are measured by three kinds of instrumentations:linear variable differential transformer,strain gauge and camera united particle-tracking *** corresponding plots of axial force versus axial elongation exhibit obvious nonlinear hysteretic ***,the loss factor related to the axial structural damping behavior is found,which increases as the oscillation loading frequency *** axial strains from the three measurement systems in the mechanical experiment indicate good agreement,as well as the values of the equivalent axial *** damping generated by polymeric layers is relatively smaller than that caused by friction ***,it can be concluded that friction forces maybe dominate the axial structural damping,especially on the conditions of high frequency.
