Barite Sag is an adverse phenomenon observed in horizontal drilling or Extended Reach Drilling (ERD) operations. It has been reported to occur majorly due to settling of weighing material such as barite on the lower side of directional wells. The barite sagging has been reported to cause drilling operational problems such as induced well-bore instability, mud losses and pipe stuck up leading to well control problems. In this context, an attempt has been made to address the barite sagging problem through application of laboratory synthesized nano-particles of barite as they are known to posses’ high area to volume ratio, hence required in low quantities in formulating optimum gravity drilling fluid. However, low quantities of barite nano-particles aids in lowering Plastic-Viscosity (PV) and increasing Rate Of Penetration (ROP) due to low solids concentration associated with it. Further, the larger surface area of barite nano-particles also aids in improved heat dissipation from bottom hole, thereby increasing the life of bits. The sagging test results have projected a reduction in sagging phenomenon with the application of nano-barite particles. However, the rheology analysis results have projected a decrease in PV with unchanging filtration-loss properties meeting the API standards. Further, the rheological behaviour at various temperatures better fits with Herschel-Bulkley model establishing its shear thinning characteristics. Remediation of heavy metal contaminated aqueous streams is of utmost importance due to recalcitrant and persistent behaviour of heavy metals in environment. Traditional removal techniques used for the remediation of toxic heavy metals are either costly or inefficient as well as produce enormous quantity of toxic chemical sludge. On the other hand, biosorption is evolving as an alternative treatment method to the traditional methods for remediation as well as selective recovery of metal ions from contaminated waters. Biosorption presents several inherent merits over other conventional as well as biological methods such as cost-effectiveness, high sorptional uptake, biological or chemical sludge minimization, regeneration/reuse of biosorbents, operation over wide range of physico-chemical conditions as well as possibility of metal recovery. Of the various biosorbents, ocean-based sorbent materials are copious and economical biosorbents for metal-bearing wastewaters. Seaweeds, crab shell, sea grass, seashell and fish scales are studied as ocean-based sorbents for various metal ions. The inherent chemical composition as well as the presence of various functional groups (carboxyl, amine, phosphonate, etc.) enabled the ocean-based sorbents to perform well in metal biosorption. The scope of this present review paper is to collate scattered existing information/results on different ocean-based waste materials utilized as sorbent for various metal ions. Impact of Indian almond leaves on aquarium water quality

There are very few studies done to understand the impact of Indian almond leaves (IAL) on aquarium water quality. Therefore, in this study, Indian almond leaves (IAL) were used to investigate the impacts on water quality in an aquarium with Betta fish as they are hardy fish, tolerant to changes in water quality, comparatively cheaper and more readily available in tropical countries. For this study, the powdered form of IAL was used for faster dilution or mixing. As for the aquarium tank, smaller tanks with a capacity of 4.5 litres are used since Betta fish is small in size and it is easy to be accommodated in the aquarium. The various dosage of IAL in power form (0-200 mg/L) was used to determine physical, chemical and biological parameters of aquarium water quality in the presence of Betta fish. The parameters were Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5), Dissolved Oxygen (DO), turbidity, pH, chlorine and survivability test and tests were conducted on day 1, 3, 7, 14, 21 and 28. All experiments had an increasing value of DO until Day 21 and gradually decreased, while BOD5 increased with increased IAL dosage. Ammonia concentration increased between day 5-10 and then started to decline at day 21 and pH values were decreasing with increased IAL dosage. The total coliform test has the highest total coliform count on day 28 for IAL dosage. The study revealed that Betta fish could survive for 28 days without any application of de-chlorinator. The optimum dosage of 50 mg/L of IAL can eliminate any requirement for de-chlorination for Betta fish.

A study on friction loss and hold-up ratio in the water-lubricated pipeline transportation of heavy oil

CORE ANNULAR FLOW (CAF) is an economically efficient and environmentally sustainable technology for transporting heavy oil and bitumen, especially compared with conventional methods such as truck hauling, dilution, and heating. In CAF, heavy oil forms the core of the flow and a water sheath encloses this core by forming a continuous layer on the pipe wall. Power requirements are orders of magnitude lower than those associated with the flow of heavy oil alone. In fact, the CAF pressure loss is comparable to that for transporting only water. One of the major obstacles to the largescale implementation of this technology is the unavailability of a reliable model for the frictional pressure loss. In this work, a CFD-based modelling methodology is validated and analysed with respect to the measured values of pressure losses in a CAF pipeline. Another subject of interest in the field of CAF hydraulics is modelling the hold-up, which simply refers to the in situ volume fraction. Most of the previous works did not focus on the underlying physics of the phenomenon. As a result, the available models do not take into account the process parameters such as mass flow rate, viscosity, and density. A new modelling approach is introduced in this work that addresses the actual physics of *** current study helps to understand the hydrodynamics that govern friction losses in CAF pipelines.

Ground rubber powder (GRP) is a waste material obtained from discarded tires and has been explored as a reinforcement material in polyethylene (PE) composites to improve their mechanical properties. The present study investigates the influence of GRP content and particle size on the properties of PE/GRP composites. The samples were characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) for surface morphology, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) for identifying organic compounds, and several mechanical tests to evaluate the properties. Statistical analysis was conducted through a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) to assess the impact of different GRP concentrations on the impact strength within each particle size range. Based on the SEM analysis, the surface of PE exhibits a smooth and homogeneous texture, while the SEM image of the PE/GRP blend reveals a strong interfacial bonding and compatible morphology between the two components. The spectrum of the GRP revealed characteristic vibrations associated with polyisoprene, a major component of tire rubber. In the case of polyethylene PE, bands related to the characteristic vibrations of C-H groups were observed, along with indications of polyethylene degradation through oxidation. These findings contribute to the understanding of the chemical composition and properties of the individual components in the PE/GRP blend. In terms of mechanical properties, the elongation at break (EB) results showed that higher GRP concentrations, particularly at 10%, led to improved elongation values, indicating the reinforcing effect of GRP particles on the PE matrix. The impact strength analysis revealed that the inclusion of GRP particles significantly enhanced the impact strength of the blend. The optimal GRP concentration for maximizing impact strength was found to be 10%. A sequential phosphine-catalyzed asymmetric [3+2] annulation of aldimines with allenoates and oxidative central-to-axial chirality transfer strategy has been developed. This approach is operationally simple, allowing for rapid access to a range of axially chiral CF 3 -containing 2-arylpyrroles with high enantiomeric excess. Furthermore, an atroposelective synthesis of esaxerenone is presented, illustrating the practical potential of the reported method.

Machine learning models are poised to make a transformative impact on chemical sciences by dramatically accelerating computational algorithms and amplifying insights available from computational chemistry methods. However, achieving this requires a confluence and coaction of expertise in computer science and physical sciences. This review is written for new and experienced researchers working at the intersection of both fields. We first provide concise tutorials of computational chemistry and machine learning methods, showing how insights involving both can be achieved. We then follow with a critical review of noteworthy applications that demonstrate how computational chemistry and machine learning can be used together to provide insightful (and useful) predictions in molecular and materials modeling, retrosyntheses, catalysis, and drug design. © 2021, CC BY-SA.

Understanding the application of sustainable development goals in oil and gas business activities

The oil and gas industry is the centre of the global economy and many national economies, including in developed and developing countries. This is also important for sustainable development, because oil and gas are the main pillars of the global energy system and, as such, are drivers of economic and social development. By mapping the linkages between the oil and gas industry and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the aim of this study is to encourage oil and gas companies to further incorporate relevant SDGs into their businesses and operations, validate their current efforts and trigger ideas. Oil and gas business activities that are in line with the sustainable development agenda can lead to greater efficiency, cost savings and competitiveness, and increase social permits to operate. The method used is to analyze the achievement of SDGs by paying attention to past experience and expectations of potential oil and gas activities going forward in efforts to achieve operational, environmental and social sustainability. Results of this study are to increase understanding of the relationship between SDGs and oil and gas business activities. Conclusion of this study is to emphasize that the oil and gas industry has the potential to contribute to the 17 SDGs.

Fossil-based fuels are main sources for atmospheric pollution and global warming. Biodiesel is the most attractive alternative fuel to the fast depletion of fossil oil. Jatropha oil is renewable non edible oil with high percentage of free fatty acids (FFAs). It generally forms soap in the presence of alkali catalyst during the production of biodiesel. In order to overcome this problem, we attempted to produce biodiesel through two-step transesterification. In the first step 1 wt % sulfuric acid (H2SO4) in oil was used for transesterification of Jatropha oil at 60°C in the mixture of one part of acid free oil with six parts of methanol. The first step was carried out to reduce the FFAs content to a minimal value. In the second step Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) catalyzed esterification was carried out at 60°C to convert FFA free Jatropha oil to biodiesel. Sonication at 20 KHz was used in both the steps. Sonication could help achieving intensive mixing of the reaction mixture during transesterification process. The conversion of biodiesel was estimated through hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance. We could achieve in the first step 99% reduction of FFA followed by 92% conversion of resultant Jatropha oil to biodiesel in 45 min. The reaction rate constants k for transesterification were estimated at different temperatures and the rate equation was derived. We conclude that the two step transesterification is likely to be a most promising environment friendly method to convert Jatropha to biodiesel. © 2018 Institution of engineering and Technology. In this research, an integrated reservoir study is performed in the J#Field (J-Oil Field) of western onshore, India to evaluate its additional reserves expectations and implement field developments plan using waterflood pilot program. The target strata includes two formations of Paleogene, which is about 3600 ft, namely G#Fm (G-Formation) of the Eocene and T#Fm (T-Formation) of Oligocene, subdivided into 11 zones. Based on these results, an attempt was made to construct of an optimization plan to exploit it, taking into account that the field is producing since 1947, with a cumulative production of 183.5 MMbbl and an overall recovery factor of 28% until January 2016. On the basis of the potential evaluation and geological modeling, blocks J48 and J45 were simulated, and the remaining oil distribution characteristics in two blocks were studied after history match. The work includes the stratigraphic studies, seismic study, logging interpretation, sedimentary facies modeling, three dimensional geological modeling, simulations for waterflooding, and future field development plans. © 2016 Egyptian petroleum Research Institute
