Harnessing biochemical innovations for sustainable oil recovery: perspectives from the Indian context on green enhanced oil recovery (GEOR) methods for matured petroleum fields

Green enhanced oil recovery (GEOR) has emerged as an eco-friendly alternative to conventional oil recovery techniques, offering a more sustainable way to increase oil extraction while minimizing environmental harm. This review focuses on the potential of biochemicals, particularly biopolymers, and biosurfactants, in improving oil recovery in Indian oilfields. While these biochemicals, such as xanthan gum, scleroglucan, and HEC, have shown promising results in global oilfields, their application in India remains largely unexplored. By comparing the characteristics of Indian reservoirs with successful international case studies, this review highlights the feasibility and advantages of biopolymer-based EOR methods in India’s unique reservoir conditions, including high temperatures, salinity, and other challenges. Despite the proven benefits of biopolymers, such as their environmental sustainability and operational efficiency, they have not yet been widely adopted in Indian oilfields. The review identifies key research gaps, including the need for a deeper understanding of microbial and biopolymer interactions, and stresses the importance of developing sustainable and cost-effective production methods for biopolymers. The findings suggest that integrating biopolymers into India’s oil recovery processes could not only enhance extraction rates but also contribute to greener, more efficient practices. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of biopolymer-based EOR and outlines future research directions, contributing to the development of more sustainable oil recovery techniques tailored to India’s specific needs. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2025.

Heavy crude oil(HCO)production,processing,and transportation forms several practical challenges to the oil and gas industry,due to its higher *** the shear rheology of this HCO is highly important to tackle production and flow *** environmental and economic viability of the conventional methods(thermal or dilution with organic solvents),force the industry to find an *** present study was constructed to investigate the effect of eco-friendly ionic liquids(ILs)on the HCO's rheology,at high temperature and high *** different alkyl ammonium ILs were screened for HCO's shear rheology at the temperatures of 25-100℃ and for pressures 0.1e10 *** addition of ILs reduced the HCO's viscosity substantially from 25 to 33%from their original HCO ***,it aids to reduce the yield stress to about 15-20%at all the studied experimental ***,the viscoelastic property of the HCO was studied for both strain-sweep and frequencysweep and noticed the ILs helps to increase HCO's loss modulus(G00)by reducing storage modulus(G0),it leads to the reduction of the crossover point around 25-32%than the standard *** the ILs addition with HCO converts its solid-like nature into liquid-like ***,the effect ILs chain length was also studied and found the ILs which has lengthier chain length shows better efficiency on the ***,the microscopic investigation of the HCO sample was analyzed with and without ILs and witnessed that these ILs help to fragment the flocculated HCO into smaller *** findings indicate that the ILs could be considered as the better alternative for efficient oil production,processing,and transportation.

Biomedical knowledge graph reasoning is capable of discovering hidden new knowledge based on existing biomedical data, providing ideas and references for new drug discovery, disease research, and so on. The entire graph topology structure formed by triplets and the attribute descriptions for each entity are crucial information for discovering new knowledge. Some add a variety of additional information to aid reasoning, namely multimodal reasoning. However, current multimodal reasoning techniques often rely solely on vector space distance inferences based on triplets themselves, making it difficult to capture more complex relationships and dependencies between facts. This work integrated triplet entity relations, graph topology structures, and attribute descriptions for each entity to incorporate richer information, and utilized logical rules as external knowledge for relational reasoning in biomedical knowledge graphs. We have evaluated our approach on PharmKG. © 2024 IEEE.

A destructive earthquake with magnitude Mw 6.5 occurred in Ambon, Indonesia, on 26 September 2019. This earthquake generated an aftershock sequence. In this study, we determined the location of the aftershock sequence using a non-linear algorithm from the Non-Linear Location (NonLinLoc) program. The catalog and waveform data were collected using 11 seismographs from BMKG regional network located around the Maluku archipelago. The data was recorded between 26 September and 18 October 2019. We have manually picked the P-and-S wave phase by using Seisgram2K software. In our preliminary result, we have located about 1,300 events of aftershock sequence with about 8,500 phases of P and S waves. Overall, the location of the focus depth of the aftershock sequence is dominantly distributed in between 5 - 25 km. Approximately ∼70% of the distribution of aftershock locations show a North-South (N-S) oriented pattern from west Seram to Ambon Islands. Meanwhile, about ∼20% of the aftershock's locations are distributed around Ambon Island. Our ongoing and future study is to determine accurate hypocentre location derived from double-difference hypocenter relocation with waveform cross-correlation. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Lithium is the cornerstone of energy transition for Indonesia to achieve Net Zero Emissions by 2060 or earlier. This energy transition will drive the Indonesia demand projection for Electric Vehicle Battery and Energy Storage System and in turn will demand much more lithium for this transition effort. Many studies have been conducted to find the sources of lithium, one of them is geothermal brine. Indonesia has enormous geothermal resources, some fields have lithium content that can potentially be extracted. Various methods in the extraction process of lithium from the geothermal brine have been developed, both on laboratory and pilot projects. The geothermal brine is typically pumped to the surface by a geothermal power plant, used for energy generation, and then returned to the underground reservoir via an injection well. Prior to reinjection the geothermal brines contain in the temporary ponds whereas the lithium extraction points may occur here or at any point suitable for the extraction technology. Typically there are three phases in the lithium extraction, like end- to-end process technology solutions, namely 1) Lithium Brine Extraction-depending on the geothermal brines field compositions, pre-treatment may be employed to remove any contaminants or unwanted constituents from the brines, then selective absorbents are used to separate lithium from other elements 2) Concentration with membrane system to concentrate lithium at a desired concentration 3) Deposition using chemical precipitation and purification for saleable lithium production. This paper reviews traditional brine extraction and direct lithium extraction (DLE) in general and specifically in geothermal brine. The study is based on a desktop study and aims to summarize the knowledge, method, technology, and techniques of lithium extraction from geothermal brine that has already been used and to find out which extraction method is suitable for the Indonesian geothermal field. It has long been established that plastic flow in the asthenosphere interacts constantly with the overlying lithosphere and plays a pivotal role in controlling the occurrence of geohazards such as earthquakes and volcanic ***,accurately characterizing the direction and lateral extents of the mantle flow field is notoriously difficult,especially in oceanic areas where deployment of ocean bottom seismometers(OBSs) is expensive and thus *** this study,by applying shear wave splitting analyses to a dataset recorded by an OBS array that we deployed between mid-2019 and mid-2020 in the South China Sea(SCS),we show that the dominant mantle flow field has a NNW-SSE orientation,which can be attributed to mantle flow extruded from the Tibetan Plateau by the ongoing Indian-Eurasian *** addition,the results suggest that E-W oriented flow fields observed in South China and the Indochina Peninsula do not extend to the central SCS.

This study is used a background source model to calculate probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA) in Manado City. The gridded seismicity model is applied to characterize the background source model based on the seismicity rate on each grid 0.1 × 0.1 degrees. The results obtained from this study was the contribution of background sources for PSHA in Manado City for the probability of excedence 10% in 50 years is 0.18 ≥ g ≤ 0.19. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

An Mw 7.8 tsunami earthquake ruptured the shallow part of the Mentawai megathrust on 25 October 2010 and generated a large tsunami that hit the Mentawai Islands. The earthquake continued a partial rupture sequence of the 2007 Mw 8.5 and 7.9 Bengkulu earthquake and the 2008 Mw 7.2 North Pagai earthquake. The aftershock activity gives the opportunity to investigate the geometry of the subduction interface, which is critical to understanding the propagation and termination of a large earthquake. However, it is necessary to have a precise location and mechanism of the aftershock distribution to clearly image the fault geometry. In this preliminary study, we have applied the Cut-and-Paste (CAP) focal mechanism inversion method to 20 aftershocks (M ≥ 4.9) of the 2010 Mentawai earthquake. The seismic waveforms recorded by the BMKG broadband seismic network on the regional distance were used in the inversion. They successfully obtained ten focal mechanisms more than that provided in the GCMT catalog. The result exhibits a distinctly different thrust and normal faulting aftershocks activity. The thrust faulting aftershocks are mainly distributed in the downdip of the Mentawai 2010 mainshock rupture, indicating the stresses that have not been released during the mainshock. In the shallow region near the trench, the aftershocks are dominated by a normal faulting mechanism which shows the tensile stress caused by the bending of the subducting plate. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

A new concentrated ternary salt ether-based electrolyte enables stable cycling of lithium metal battery(LMB)cells with high-mass-loading(13.8 mg cm^(−2),2.5 mAh cm^(−2))NMC622(LiNi_(0.6)Co_(0.2)Mn_(0.2)O_(2))cathodes and 50μm Li ***“CETHER-3,”this electrolyte is based on LiTFSI,LiDFOB,and LiBF4 with 5 vol%fluorinated ethylene carbonate in 1,***-cial carbonate and state-of-the-art binary salt ether electrolytes were also tested as *** CETHER-3,the electrochemical performance of the full-cell battery is among the most favorably reported in terms of high-voltage cycling *** example,LiNi_(x)Mn_(y)Co_(1-x-y)O_(2)(NMC)-Li metal cells retain 80%capacity at 430 cycles with a 4.4 V cut-off and 83%capacity at 100 cycles with a 4.5 V cut-off(charge at C/5,discharge at C/2).According to simulation by density functional theory and molecular dynamics,this favorable performance is an outcome of enhanced coordination between Li^(+)and the solvent/salt *** advanced microscopy(high-resolution transmission electron microscopy,scanning electron microscopy)and surface science(X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy,time-of-fight secondary ion mass spectroscopy,Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy,Raman spectroscopy),it is demonstrated that a thinner and more stable cathode electrolyte interphase(CEI)and solid electrolyte interphase(SEI)are *** CEI is rich in lithium sulfide(Li_(2)SO_(3)),while the SEI is rich in Li_(3)N and *** cycling,the CEI/SEI suppresses both the deleterious transformation of the cathode R-3m layered near-surface structure into disordered rock salt and the growth of lithium metal dendrites.
