Evaluation of reduced graphene oxide from cotton waste as an efficient phenol adsorbent in aqueous media

The elimination of organic substances, such as phenol, in conventional and biological processes, has been considered a challenge for the petroleum industry. In this work, reduced graphene oxide (rGO), obtained from cellulosic biomass (CB-rGO), as cotton waste, was employed as a phenol adsorbent in an aqueous solution simulating refinery effluent. The CB-rGO was characterized using HRTEM, Raman, XRD, FTIR, BET, and zeta analysis. The behavior of variables such as pH, contact time, temperature, CB-rGO mass, and adsorbate concentration on the characteristics of the adsorption process were continuously investigated. These parameters of the adsorption process were evaluated across a range of adsorbent concentrations from 100 to 300 mg/L, pH in the range of 2–11, adsorbent mass 5–25 mg, contact time of 0–180 min, and temperature of 20–60 °C. The adsorption isotherm data were better described by the Freundlich equation compared to the Langmuir and Sips models, despite the small difference in R2 values. Mechanism diffusion was analyzed using the Boyd model and confirmed to be the rate-limiting step in the adsorption process. The endothermic nature of this CB-rGO adsorption process with phenol was confirmed by verifying the thermodynamic data. This successful removal of phenol from synthetic effluents highlights the promising potential of this adsorbent obtained from an industrial residue and being an ecologically more sustainable alternative compared to the synthesis of other materials identified to remove this contaminant. Saline aquifers are considered as a prime target for permanent geological storage of anthropogenic CO2 owing their relative abundance and suitable storage capacity, worldwide. A deep understanding of CO2 diffusion in brine is central in modeling CO2 sequestration operations. CO2 diffusion coefficient can be determined precisely in laboratory but such tests are constrained by their relatively high cost, time intensive nature, and safety concerns due to need for high-pressure equipment. Development of precise, fast, and robust models and correlations for a broad range of pressure and temperature is vital. The goal of this research work was to develop connectionist predictive models and a correlation using four neural network algorithms to predict CO2 diffusion coefficient in CO2-brine system for pressures of up to 100 MPa and temperatures of up to 673°K. The algorithms used include multilayer perceptron (MLP), cascade forward neural network (CFNN), recurrent neural network (RNN), and gene expression programming (GEP). The databases consist of 191 experimental and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation data collected from the open literature. The input parameters include pressure, temperature, and density of brine. Density of brine was never been considered in previous modeling works where it has the greatest effect on diffusion coefficient of CO2 in brine. The Bayesian regularization algorithm was used to optimize the developed smart models. The MLP yielded the most accurate predictions with a root mean squared error (RMSE) and coefficient of determination (R2) of 2.945 and 0.998, respectively. The proposed MLP model is superior to the existing smart models and correlations considering both precision and range of pressure and temperature. Having an accurate estimation of CO2 diffusion in brine can be quite useful during preliminary assessment and modeling of CO2 sequestration operations in deep saline aquifers. © 2024, The Authors. The occurrence of deep-focus earthquakes is unusual and has become one of mysterious seismic phenomena. The behavior of deep earthquake occurrence is still poorly understood. The geodynamical process of a deep earthquake must have a fundamental difference of physical processes from a shallow or intermediate earthquake. There are two main processes of deep earthquake occurrence, water infiltration into the subduction zone (dehydration embrittlement) and transformational faulting of metastable olivine. In Indonesia, the Java subduction zone is known as the deep earthquake source region. We will present preliminary results from the study of characteristic and geodynamical processes of deep earthquake events. We used catalog data from ISC-EHB and mechanism data from global CMT catalog within study area 3° - 13°S and 104,5° - 115°E. The activity of deep earthquakes in Java subduction showed 3 main characteristics i.e the seismicity decreases exponentially in 60 - 300 km depth, lack of earthquake activity due to hole structure in 330 - 500 km and increasing earthquake activity in 500-600 km depth due to transformational faulting of metastable olivine. Earthquakes' focal mechanism most varies at shallow depth, subsequently, focal mechanism transition occurred from reverse at 60-300 km to normal at >300 km depth. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The displacement of a tunnel plays a crucial role in conventional tunneling methods, serving as a key parameter for support requirement. Therefore, analyzing tunnel displacement is important for ensuring safety and optimizing costs by determining the appropriate level of tunnel support and installation time. Numerical analysis methods are commonly employed for assessing tunnel displacement, and two widely recognized approaches used worldwide are the continuum and discontinuum methods. While previous studies have highlighted differences in the analysis results obtained from these two methods, the magnitude of such disparities has not been extensively explored. Hence, the objective of this study is to quantify the extent of variation between the two methods through various scenarios, encompassing unsupported and supported excavated ground. Specifically, the focus is on tunnel displacement and the tensile force generated on axial tunnel supports, such as rock bolts. To facilitate this investigation, three tunnel sections from the Zentrum am Berg, tunnel research centre located in Austria, are utilized. The results show that discontinuum models exhibit higher displacements and higher tensile loads on axial support than continuum numerical models of the same tunnel geometry and equivalent rock masses. We show that discontinuum models can also capture asymmetric behaviour, and thus should be preferentially used in fractured rock masses where displacement of rock blocks dominate the rock mass behaviour. © 2023, The Author(s).

The double carcass rubber vulcanized bonded floating hose is widely used for oil and gas transportation between platforms and shuttle tankers. The tensile load is one of the main loads of the floating hose, and the tensile stiffness is an important design index parameter of the floating hose. Compared with the single carcass floating hose, it is difficult to analyze the local structural mechanical response of the double carcass floating hose under tensile load because the overall deformation of the double carcass floating hose is large and the wall structure is more complex. In this paper, a nonlinear mechanical finite element model was created by the commercial finite element software. Based on Embedded technology, cord layer and spiral steel layer were embedded as the skeleton layer of double carcass floating hose. The stress and strain trends of the hose helix reinforcement and the tension of the cord layer under tensile load were analyzed, and the accuracy of the numerical model was verified by comparing the tensile test results of the full-size double carcass floating hose. The influence of pressure and no pressure on the tensile properties of floating hoses was studied, and a prediction formula for the tensile stiffness of double carcass floating hoses was proposed. The research results can better predict the structural response of the hose under tensile load and provide guidance for the structural design of the hose to improve the service life of the floating hose. © 2023 by the International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers (ISOPE).

Bali Island is one of the main tourist destinations in Indonesia. However, Bali Island is also prone to earthquakes, as evidenced by several historical destructive earthquakes, especially in the eastern part of Bali. A probabilistic seismic hazard modeling is undertaken to analyse the earthquake hazard, as well as studying the contribution of local geological conditions to earthquake ground motion. We use seismic waveforms retrieved from 23 temporary seismic stations across the eastern part of Bali Island from December 2018 to June 2019 and 5 permanent seismic stations around Mount Agung and Batur. The recording data were processed using the Horizontal to Vertical Spectral Ratio (HVSR) method. Our preliminary result shows local geological conditions for each station, represented by the value of the average shear-wave velocity on rocks to a depth of 30 meters (Vs30) and the total thickness of sediments above the bedrock (basin depth). These initial results will then be developed as site parameter input for probabilistic seismic hazard analysis in the eastern part of Bali. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Shallow reservoirs in Group-B of MS-field in Malay Basin, Terengganu's offshore, Malaysia were explored for development. Poor understanding of depositional settings, stratigraphic context, lithofacies, reservoir geometry, reservoir quality, and heterogeneity are some of the difficulties encountered in developing these shallow reservoirs. In this study, these challenges were circumvented by performing reservoir architecture and quality analysis. This was achieved by integrating the interpretation from the cores, well logs, petrographic and petrophysical analyses for depositional model generation, lithofacies description, as well as reservoir geometry, continuity, and quality determination. Five lithofacies were identified in Group- B, namely: laminated mudstone (ML), bioturbated mudstone (MB), heterolithic mud dominated (MH), heterolithic sand dominated (SH), and bioturbated sandstone (SB). The sediments encountered in ML and SB lithofacies consist of moderate to good reservoir quality, while for SH and MH, they ranged from high to low quality. This study provides a better insight to the shallow reservoir heterogeneity in MS-field and the results obtained could also be applied to the other similar shallow reservoirs for characterization and modelling improvement processes. Bedrock layers support large load structures, while Phnom Penh faces limitations in mechanical properties. This research conducted rock testing on sandstone from Chroy Changvar and Dankao districts, both strongly developed zones in Phnom Penh. The fine-grain sandstones were compressed under varying conditions of confining stress of 0 to 6 MPa and pore water pressure of 1 MPa. Permeability was assessed at pore water pressures of 1 MPa and confining stress of 3 MPa. Core rock samples, collected at depths of 43 to 50 m below the surface from both sites, revealed characteristics. The dry and wet density of Chroy Changvar sandstone existed at 2,503 kg/m3 and 2,574 kg/m3, with a permeability value of 1.43∙10-14 m2 of pre-failure rock 1.87∙10-14 m2 showing slightly increase. The maximum peak stress ranged from 11 to 75 MPa. Shear properties were estimated, indicating an internal friction angle of 57-degree, rupture plane angle of 16.5 degrees, and cohesion of 1.6 MPa. Dangkoa siltsotne showed the value of dry and wet densities of 2,682 kg/m3 and 2,699 kg/m3, respectively, with intact rock permeability of 8.63∙10-15 m2 with highly increased in fractured rock permeability of 1.64∙10-12 m2. This rock existed of high stress under compression with the peak stress of 100 MPa to 330 MPa exhibited a brittle-rock type even the increase in confining stress. The internal friction angle of 71-degree, rupture angle of 10 degree, and cohesion of 11.2 MPa. The study provides insights into the contrasting mechanical properties of bedrock of two districts in Phnom Penh. Chroy Chongvar sandstone displayed plasticity, while Dankoa sandstone exhibited brittleness. These findings contribute valuable information for understanding and managing subsurface conditions in urban environments. Copyright 2024 ARMA, American Rock Mechanics Association.

An ultra-low IFT (interfacial tension) is required between the liquid–liquid systems to dislodge the crude oil completely from the pores of the formation. As a huge amount of alkali is used for this purpose, scale formation and formation damage near wellbore region is a common issue. To perform an economically and environmentally viable process, it is obligatory to design the process with low and optimum concentration of alkali. Moreover, if the concentration of alkali is properly designed according to the oil chemistry, the alkali flooding alone could result in a favorable recovery for high acid number crude oil. So, the present study utilized low concentration of NaOH, to understand the behavior of alkali at the IFT of hydrocarbon–water system. Hydrocarbons like heptane and benzene were selected to understand the influence of hydrocarbon type on the IFT reduction. It was found that the IFT between the hydrocarbon–water system continuously decreases with an increase in NaOH concentration;moreover, a minimum concentration of 100 ppm is required to initiate reduction reaction. It is evident to state that IFT is dependent upon type of the hydrocarbon, because the enhanced reduction is observed in aromatics–water system using NaOH due to stronger cation-π interaction. © 2021, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
