Heavy oil reservoirs are one of the largest remaining crude oil reserves in the world. Often, the inherent properties of heavy and extra-heavy oils cause major problems in production and transportation processes. The viscosity of these oils makes their treatment difficult with conventional means. Use of solvents to dissolve the heavy oils has been a traditional method to deal with these problems. Improvement in flow through solvent treatment can be further optimized through the use of nanoparticles. Literature works have suggested that nanoparticles have catalyzing effects which affect the polar species of heavy oils. This study is aimed at examining the effects of metallic nanoparticles in altering the viscous property of heavy fraction. Use of thermal stimulation in association with solvents are explored as a means to achieve viscosity reduction. These applications can be further extended into the areas of flow assurance. © 2021, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

The amalgamation of speech recognition technology and artificial intelligence has facilitated advancements on a global scale. The implementation of conversational artificial intelligence (AI) holds the capacity to significantly transform the market. Law enforcement agencies could potentially employ this technology to identify perpetrators based on their speech patterns. Large-scale social gatherings can provide numerous benefits to researchers across various domains. The emergence of two-dimensional (2D) MXenes as efficient light-to-heat conversion materials offers significant potential for solar-based desalination, particularly in photothermal interfacial evaporation, enabling cost-effective solar-powered membrane distillation (MD). This study investigates solar-powered MD afforded by a photothermally functionalized spacer, which is built by spray-coating Ti3C2Tx MXene sheets on metallic spacers. 2D Ti3C2Tx MXene gives an ultrahigh photothermal conversion efficiency;thereby, by Ti3C2Tx MXene-coated metallic spacer, this rationally designed spacer allows for a localized photothermal conversion and interfacial feed heating effect on the membrane surface, especially for MD operation. As a feed spacer and a photothermal element, Ti3C2Tx MXene-coated metallic spacer exhibited stable enhanced water flux of up to 0.36 kg·m−2h−1 under one sun illumination for a feed salinity of 35 g·L−1, corresponding energy conversion efficiency of 28.3 %. Overall, the developed photothermal Ti3C2Tx MXene-coated spacers displayed great potential in enhancing the performance, scalability, and feasibility of solar-driven MD process, paving the way for further development of photothermal elements that can be implemented in solar MD applications. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Optimum wellhead pressure selection in the Hululais geothermal field

The Hululais field, a geothermal field under the management of PT Pertamina Geothermal Energi, will build 2 x 55 Mwe. The first stage is to build 1x55 Mwe, by selecting a certain wellhead pressure from the output curve to be able to fulfill the first phase of development. Researchers try to calculate in order to meet the needs of the first stage by calculating the decrease in fluid enthalpy which is a function of fluid pressure and temperature, the pressure loss profile is obtained from the Beggs and Brill equations and the temperature loss profile from the energy balance law, using two-dimensional Newton Rapson mathematical manipulation, to get pressure and temperature drops simultaneously in a pipe segment. While exergy is useful energy, by looking at the exergy at the wellhead, at the output of the steam separator and the turbine input, the optimum choice of the exergy plot for the three points, the sloping line is chosen. Besides, the power that can be generated by the generator is a function of the enthalpy and mass of the steam. The optimum results are: wellhead pressure C-1, 18.34 bar, E-1 wellhead pressure 18.34 bar, wellhead pressure E-2 has a pressure of 12.26 bar. Two-phase pipes use 16 in to 28 in, on single-phase steam pipes use a diameter of 16 inches to 36 inches, all pipes are coated with 8 cm insulation, using rockwooll insulation, on two-phase pipes, the magnitude of the pressure loss is 0.623 bar, the temperature drop is 1,9083 °C, The distance between the separator and turbine varies, the farthest is 6460 m, the closest is 1824 m. Until the turbine inlet, the incoming steam mass is 94.01 kg/s, the pressure is 8.45 bar, the temperature is 177.4 °C, the exergy price in the turbine is 76.77 MWth, the power that can be generated is 56.431Mwe.

Background: Biodiesel is one of the ecofriendly energy sources that can be generated from edible, non-edible, waste, and algae feedstocks. Over time, the utilization of different kinds of heterogeneous catalysts has been proven critical in the manufacture of biodiesel from diverse feedstocks. They exhibit better reusability and easier separation compared to the homogenous catalysts. Methods: In this work, the advances in the use of heterogeneous catalysts for biodiesel production from 2018 to 2024 have been evaluated. The process parameters like alcohol to oil molar ratio (M/O), catalyst concentration (%), reaction time and reaction temperature (RT), reusability of the catalyst, etc. are evaluated. The catalysts derived from waste materials through the calcination process are an efficient and cost-effective substitute for conventional catalysts. Nanomaterials, due to their small size and higher aspect ratio, provide very high efficiency and reusability in catalytic reactions. Significant findings: The heterogeneous catalysts are also found to be highly reusable for multiple cycles and the leaching of active sites, clogging of pore spaces of catalyst, etc. are the major causes of catalyst deactivation. Magnetic heterogeneous catalysts have shown good biodiesel yields and high reusability. Also, naturally occurring calcium oxide and potassium compounds present in waste derived catalysts helped to give high biodiesel yields. The future direction in the path of development of heterogeneous catalysts from cheap, abundant, and environmentally benign materials. The synthesis of heterogeneous catalysts from waste materials addresses the issue of waste disposal and converting solid waste to value-added catalysts. The life cycle assessment studies, encompassing heterogeneous catalyst synthesis, feedstock oil extraction, biodiesel production, and fuel combustion may give valuable input on the environmental impact of the entire process. © 2024

Utilization of Abandoned Oil Well Logs and Seismic Data for Modeling and Assessing Deep Geothermal Energy Resources: A Case Study of the Hammam Faraun Area, Sinai Peninsula, Egypt

Hammam Faraun (HF) geothermal site in Egypt shows potential for addressing energy demand and fossil fuel shortages. This study utilizes abandoned oil well logs, seismic data, and surface geology to assess HF geothermal energy *** interpretation identified a significant clysmic fault parallel to Hammam Faraun fault (HFF), named CLB fault. CLB fault along with the HFF, create a renewable geothermal *** revealed two main geothermal reservoirs: the Nubian sandstone reservoir and the Eocene Thebes carbonate reservoir with water saturation values approaching 100%. Corrected borehole temperature data indicated reservoir temperatures of around 120℃ and 140℃ for the Thebes and Nubian reservoirs, *** analysis and stress state provided insights into subsurface fractures. A geomechanical model demonstrated the impact of different stresses and pore pressure on geothermal fluid flow. NE-SW oriented fractures showed a higher dilation tendency due to aquathermal *** integrated conceptual geothermal model suggested a magma chamber beneath HF as the heat source, related to Oligo-Miocene volcanic activity. The breached relay ramp and fault-related open fracture system served as pathways for geothermal *** of the geothermal potential utilized volumetric calculations and Monte Carlo simulation. The estimated hot water volumes were 1.72 km3, 4.242 km3, and 5.332 km3 for the Nubian reservoir in the onshore part, Thebes carbonate reservoir in the offshore part, and Nubian sandstone reservoir in the offshore part, *** results indicate a medium enthalpy resource suitable for electricity generation using a Kalina geothermal power plant. The predicted geothermal power output in HF is promising, with an average power output of 9.64 MW, 21.38 MW, and 43.76 MW for the Nubian reservoir in the onshore part, Thebes reservoir in the offshore part, and Nubian reservoir in the offshore part, respectively. Batu Gede and Batu Kapur are administratively located in Subang Regency, West Java, precisely in the northern part of Tangkuban Perahu Geothermal Working Area. Characteristics of the manifestations in Batu Gede and Batu Kapur are generally bicarbonate neutral pH warm springs and their location exposed in the foot of Tangkuban Perahu Volcano. Despite the similar chemical characteristic of those two manifestations, there is a significant characteristic difference between them. Spring with low pH with the pungent smell emerges in the Batu Gede not far from neutral pH bicarbonate warm spring. The aim of this research is to determine control of the occurrence and relationship of manifestation in both areas by conducting geological mapping. Surface manifestations are controlled by a geological process associated with primary and secondary permeability. Both manifestations emerge dominantly in the control of fault as a secondary permeability. Primary permeability also controls the occurrence of manifestations but not significant. Batu Gede manifestations are dominantly controlled by overstepping structure, while Batu Kapur are dominantly controlled by intersections between structures. Based on high content of SO4-2, acid pH, and the presence of sulfur, the acid manifestation might be correlated with magmatic activity beneath Batu Gede's manifestation. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Thermal stability performance of bagasse sodium lignosulphonate surfactant

So far, the surfactants commonly used in the petroleum industry are petroleum Sulphonate-based surfactants. These types of surfactants are proven to have the optimum performance to lower Interfacial Tension (IFT). However, because they come with a high cost, are not renewable, and are not environmentally friendly, plant-based surfactants emerge as alternatives to increase the oil recovery. One type of lignosulphonate surfactant is the Sodium Lignosulphonate Surfactant (SLS Surfactant) made of lignin. This type of surfactant comes with a relatively lower cost and more abundant material because it is from plants. However, the surfactant characteristics require further analysis to be used on a field scale. One of the most essential characteristics of a surfactant is Thermal Stability. A Thermal Stability test is conducted to measure the surfactant’s endurance to a certain level of temperature. The physical properties of surfactant, brine, and oil conditions should be measured before conducting a Thermal Stability test. A decent surfactant will show stable condition after the Thermal Stability test is conducted. The Thermal Stability test in this research was conducted for 90 days or 12 weeks of observation inside an oven at 60°C temperature. The observation was performed on day 0, the first week, third week, fifth week, 8th week, and 12th week with a Spinning Drop Tensiometer TX500D tool to obtain Interfacial Tension value. The solution compatibility was obtained through visual observation. In this test, we utilized SLS surfactant made from bagasse, mixed with co-surfactant with concentration levels of 1.5 and 2.5 on 110,000 ppm salinity using Intermediate Oil. The results revealed that SLS surfactant possesses relatively stable thermal stability with transparent solution compatibilities after 90 days of observation.

Precious metal (e.g., gold and silver) content is a key-driven factor to encourage the electronic waste (E-waste) recycling industry. A part of E-waste composition, random access memory (RAM) contained in printed circuit boards (PCBs) has been collected for recovering of these precious metals. In the gold extraction process, the cyanide has been widely used as a leaching agent because of its lower cost. However, cyanide-contaminated wastewater has highly toxic and poses a severe threat to human health and surroundings when treated improperly. Aqua regia, an alternative gold leaching agent, has been proposed because it is less toxic than cyanide. This study, the aqua regia leaching method was conducted to recover the gold from discarded RAM. The effects of pulp density (solid to liquid ratio) between RAM and aqua regia, leaching time, and temperature on the gold recovery were investigated. The results show that the highest extraction yield of gold was 746.8 ppm at the solid to liquid ratio of 1 g RAM to 6 mL aqua regia, at 75 ºC, and 4 hours. The findings from this study provide the understanding for selecting the parameter affecting the gold extraction efficiency, leading to the improvement of recycling technologies and environment-friendly processes for further precious metal recovery. © 15th International Symposium on East Asian Resources Recycling technology, EARTH 2019.
