Aggregate particles within an asphalt mixture are coated in a thin film of binder. Several studies and even mix design procedures have been based on an implied correlation between the binder film thickness (BFT) and the mechanical properties of these mixtures. Those studies generally define the BFT based on a predictive equation linked to one or more theoretical considerations, but without direct experimental determination of the BFT. However, recent developments of powerful scanning electron microscopes (SEMs) and digital image processing (DIP) techniques allow one to perform detailed analysis of microstructural images and thus directly measure the BFT value. This paper presents an analysis of BFT and mastic film thickness (MFT) within asphalt concrete (AC) mixtures using high-resolution SEM images and DIP. Based on this methodology, the measured mean BFT and MFT values ranged from 5.6 µm to 10.8 µm, and from 20.8 µm to 28.2 µm, respectively. Additionally, a BFT analysis considering fine aggregate matrix (FAM) phase within the ACs was pursued. A criterion to obtain FAM BFT is proposed and it can be useful in volumetric FAM mix design and sample fabrication. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Tangkuban Perahu and nearby volcano-hosted geothermal prospects are believed to be important for future power generation in West Java, Indonesia. Recharge areas of these prospects and geothermal fluid evolution are not yet fully understood. The objectives of this investigation are to describe the fluid origin, processes, and evolution of geothermal fluids in relation to the recharge and the conceptual model of the Tangkuban Perahu Geothermal Systems (TPGS). The investigation involved sampling and analysis of geothermal waters, rainwater, and gases collected in fumaroles and other manifestations around the TPGS. Isotopic results of δ18O and δ2H collected from thermal and rainwater indicate deep-circulating meteoric origin, at an infiltration altitude ranges between 753-850 m in low terrain. Meanwhile, the high-standing terrain indicates the recharge zone to be within the wall of the Sunda Caldera and mountain slopes. Chondrite normalized patterns reveal an overall flat trendline that suggests the enrichment of Lower Rare Earth Elements (LREEs) in the central part of Tangkuban Perahu which is derived from the magmatic influx. The non-atmospheric gases origin was diagnosed by the lower N2/Ar (≤ 38) and is characterized of meteoric origin. The positive δ18O shifts from Ciater (CT), Batu Gede (BG), and Domas crater (KwD) geothermal waters samples comparatively to local meteoric lines are influenced by the interaction with wall rocks or magmatic influx. In these geothermal systems, the meteoric water infiltrated to the depth is heated, mixed with near-surface water, and followed by partial discharge as thermal springs along faults. © 2022, The Authors. Fuel cell membranes can be used in various ways to achieve zero-emission transport and energy systems, which offer a promising way to power production due to their higher efficiency compared to the internal combustion engine and the eco-environment. Perfluoro sulfonic acid membranes used for proton exchange membranes (PEMs) have certain drawbacks, like higher fuel permeability and expense, lower mechanical and chemical durability, and proton conductivity under low humidity and above 80 °C temperature. Researchers have drawn their attention to the production of polymer electrolyte membranes with higher proton conductivity, thermal and chemical resilience, maximum power density, lower fuel permeability, and lower expense. For sustainable clean energy generation, a review covering the most useful features of advanced material-associated membranes would be of great benefit to all interested communities. This paper endeavors to explore several types of novel inorganic fillers and crosslinking agents, which have been incorporated into membrane matrices to design the desired properties for an advanced fuel cell system. Membrane parameters such as proton conductivity, the ability of H2 transport, and the stability of the membrane are described. Research directions for developing fuel cell membranes are addressed based on several challenges suggested. The technological advancement of nanostructured materials for fuel cell applications is believed to significantly promote the future clean energy generation technology in practice. © 2025 The Authors

The construction industry is one of the most dangerous industries worldwide due to deadly fatalities and accidents recorded yearly, compared to other sector of the economy in many countries. Though many safety programs have been established and implemented, the situation does not seem to have been mitigated the menace of accidents. Developing countries, like Nigeria, still lack laws and regulations on health and safety practices. The health and well-being of construction workers are being threatened by the increasing cases of injuries and casualties recorded at construction sites. The construction industry in Nigeria is also labor intensive with labor cost running between 40 to 65% of the total project cost. Operators are majorly categorized into multinational and indigenous construction companies. Indigenous companies in Nigeria are involved in an estimated 50-100% public and private clients in both traditional and non-Traditional systems of procurement. However, indigenous companies record 2 and 5 percent accident and injury level among workers with 300% more risk than the multinationals. Thus, this paper aims to provide an overview of the construction safety performance and construction stakeholders operations in the construction industry of Nigeria. The significance of safety commitment to improving safety performance and reducing risk is widely accepted and substantive research has been conducted globally in order to improve the safety performance of the construction industry such as: safety commitment, design for safety, safety culture, safety climate, behavior base safety BBS. Despite the research and improvements that have been made through the years, construction stakeholders are continuously being challenged with occurrences of injury on site. Therefore, this paper aims to identify the factors, which influence of management commitment toward improving safety performance in the construction industry of Nigeria. Data was collected through a questionnaire and analysis was performed using SPSS version 16 software. The results of the study showed that involvement of workers in the preparation of safety programs for the site and appropriate issuance of motivational directives by the top management to enhance safety significantly impact on the safety performance of construction stakeholders. Thus, the research outcome would be of benefit to top management of construction companies, policy makers and building development approvers. Copyright © 2020 ISEC *** right reserved.

A molecular dynamics study on CO2 diffusion coefficient in saline water under a wide range of temperatures, pressures, and salinity concentrations: Implications to CO2 geological storage

Carbon dioxide (CO2) sequestration in saline aquifers has been introduced as one of the most practical, long-term, and safe solutions to tackle a growing threat originating from the emission of CO2. Successfully executing and planning the process necessitates a comprehensive understanding of CO2 transport properties-particularly the diffusion coefficient, influencing the behavior of CO2 dissolution in water/brine regarding the shape of viscous fingers, the onset of instabilities, etc. In this research, Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation was employed to compute the CO2 diffusion coefficient in various NaCl saline water concentrations (1-6 mol NaCl/kg water) under the broad spectrum of temperatures (294-423 K) and pressures (10-30 MPa) to acquire a data-set for the CO2 diffusion coefficient in different circumstances. According to the results, the NaCl concentration increase gives rise to a decrease in the CO2 diffusion coefficient, by which the reduction is most notably at higher temperatures. In fact, the presence of more cations due to the salinity concentration increase forms further hydration shells, acting as a barrier for CO2 diffusion. In addition, the rise in the CO2 diffusion at elevated temperatures can be explained by the cation's hydration shell size reduction with temperature increment due to intensifying repulsive forces among water molecules. We also proposed a new precise correlation for estimating CO2 diffusion coefficients over temperatures and salinity ranges of this study. Regarding the pressure variation effects, no tangible changes are observed with pressure increase, validating a negligible influence on the diffusion coefficient. Furthermore, the variability of the CO2 diffusion coefficient in the presence of other salts, namely MgCl2, CaCl2, KCl, and Na2SO4, were computed separately. Comparing the influence of various salts, CaCl2 and KCl have the highest and lowest effect on the CO2 diffusion coefficient, respectively. Finally, a set of direc

The Brazilian Equatorial Margin (BEM) encompasses a WNW to NW-trending segment along which a complex set of sedimentary basins were developed from the Neobarremian to the Albian. Recent discoveries of hydrocarbon reserves in the continental margins of Ghana, in Africa, and Guyanas/Suriname, in South America, have heightened interest in studying the Equatorial Atlantic margins. In this context, it is crucial to understand better the mechanisms that led to the formation of these basins, whose exploratory potential is still open. Most studies on the BEM either focus on small areas without comparing results to their African counterparts or involve regional reconstructions that overlook hyperextended crustal sections, thus hindering a more accurate fit. This work aims to define the deep crustal architecture of the BEM and delineate the transition from continental to strictly oceanic crust based on the merging of gravimetric, magnetic, and multichannel 2D seismic reflection data from various sources, types, and resolutions. Our findings have allowed us to categorize the BEM into four domains: proximal (PD), necking zone (NZ), ocean-continent transition (OCT), and oceanic crust (OC). These domains feature a predominance of Aptian to Albian NW-SE normal and oblique-slip faults, as well as NE-SW folds and thrusts, all of which are associated with E-W strike-slip or oblique-slip faults. The nature of the ocean-continent transition zone can vary from gradual to abrupt, depending on its location and the dominant structural style in each margin segment. The oceanward limit of the OCT domain is marked by a continent-ocean boundary (COB) that runs orthogonal to the present-day oceanic fracture zones, unlike what has been reported in other studies. Our defined boundaries ensured a good fit between the continental crusts of the BEM and the African Equatorial Margin (AEM) during the Cenomanian period. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

We propose alternative discretization schemes for improving the lattice Boltzmann pseudopotential model for incompressible multicomponent systems, with the purpose of modeling the flow of immiscible fluids with a large viscosity ratio. Compared to the original model of Shan-Chen [Phys. Rev. E 47, 1815 (1993)], the present discretization schemes consider: (i) an explicit force term, (ii) a second-order discretization of the stream term, (iii) a moments-based model for the kinetic nonequilibrium distributions, and (iv) a high-order discretization of the spatial derivative terms. To verify the accuracy of the proposed model, the effects of varying the viscosity ratio as well as both fluid's viscosities on spurious currents and capillary number are investigated for the problems dealing with a static bubble, two-component Poiseuille flow, and immiscible fluid-fluid displacement. The resulting algorithm maintains the simplicity of the pseudopotential model while allowing an easy implementation for multicomponent systems. The results of the model herein proposed show improved control of the interface region and interfacial tension, relatively smaller magnitudes of spurious current values with increasing viscosity ratio, and also a significantly wider stability range with respect to the previously best results in the literature.

In this study, new terpyridine ligands (1 and 2) were synthesized and their potential as chemosensor was investigated. Firstly, structural and optical characterization of the newly synthesized compounds 1 and 2 were performed by NMR, HRMS analyses, UV-vis. absorption and fluorescence spectrophotometer. To the best of our knowledge, the novelty of this study lies in the exceptional chemosensor potential demonstrated by our synthesized compounds, surpassing those reported in the literature. Solvent-dependent optical behavior was explored in thirteen different solvents, identifying ethanol as the optimal medium for sensor studies. The ion selectivity of 1 and 2 was examined against 20 different metal cations, revealing that compound 1 functions as a colorimetric sensor for Fe2+ and Fe3+, while compound 2 acts as a colorimetric sensor for both Fe2+, Fe3+ and Cr3+ and a fluorometric sensor for Zn2+ and Cd2+. With compound 1, the detection limits for Fe2+, Fe3+ were determined as 0.18 and 1.41 µM, respectively, and with compound 2, the detection limits for Fe2+, Fe3+, Cr3+, Zn2+ and Cd2+ were determined as 2.22, 0.22, 11.63, 0.31 and 2.50 µM, respectively. Both sensors demonstrated high selectivity and minimal interference from other cations. Furthermore, reversibility studies with EDTA confirmed the regenerative sensing ability of 2 for Zn2+ and Cd2+ detection. The binding mechanisms of compounds 1 and 2 with the detected ions (Fe2+, Fe3+, Cr3+, Zn2+ and Cd2+) were determined by FTIR measurements. Moreover, the validation of the detecting capabilities of chemosensors 1 and 2 is obtained using Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Time-Dependent DFT (TD-DFT) calculations, utilizing FMO and UV-Vis analyses to gain insights into their electronic structures and photophysical properties. Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) is a good way to transport natural gas from suppliers to end consumers. LNG contains a huge amount of cold energy due to the energy consumed in the liquefaction process. Generally, the LNG cold energy is lost during the regasification process at the receiving terminal. Power generation with LNG as the heat sink is an energy-efficient and environment-friendly way to regasify LNG. Among different kinds of power generation technologies, Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) is the most promising power cycle to recover LNG cold energy. ORC has been widely used to convert low-temperature heat into electricity. If low-temperature waste heat and LNG cold energy utilization are utilized simultaneously, the efficiency of the whole system can be improved significantly. However, due to the large temperature difference between the low-temperature waste heat source and LNG, one stage ORC cannot exploit the waste heat and LNG cold energy efficiently. Therefore, a cascaded ORC system is proposed in this study. The optimization of the integrated system is challenging due to the non-convexity and non-linearity of flowsheet and the thermodynamic properties of the working fluids. A simulation-based optimization framework with Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm is adopted to determine the optimal operating conditions of the integrated system. The maximum unit net power output of the integrated system can reach 0.096 kWh per kilogram LNG based on the optimal results. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2020.
