Manufacturing three-dimensional (3d) objects with polymers/bioceramic composite materials has been investigated in recent years. In this study, we manufactured and evaluated solvent-free polycaprolactone (PCL) and beta-tricalcium ph.sph.te (β-TCP) composite fiber as a scaffold material for 3d printing. To investigate the optimal ratio of feedstock material for 3d printing, the ph.sical and biological characteristics of four different ratios of β-TCP compounds mixed with PCL were investigated. PCL/β-TCP ratios of 0 wt.%, 10 wt.%, 20 wt.%, and 30 wt.% were fabricated, with PCL melted at 65 °C and blended with β-TCP with no solvent added during the fabrication process. Electron microscopy revealed an even distribution of β-TCP in the PCL fibers, while Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy demonstrated that the biomaterial compounds remained intact after the heating and manufacturing process. In addition, adding 20% β-TCP into the PCL/β-TCP mixture significantly increased hardness and Young’s Modulus by 10% and 26.5%, respectively, suggesting that PCL-20 has better resistance to deformation under load. Cell viability, alkaline ph.sph.tase (ALPase) activity, osteogenic gene expression, and mineralization were also observed to increase according to the amount of β-TCP added. Cell viability and ALPase activity were 20% higher with PCL-30, while upregulation for osteoblast-related gene expression was better with PCL-20. In conclusion, PCL-20 and PCL-30 fibers fabricated without solvent exhibited excellent mechanical properties, high biocompatibility, and high osteogenic ability, making them promising materials for 3d printing customized bone scaffolds promptly, sustainably, and cost-effectively. © 2023 by the authors.

Nitroimidazole-based drugs are widely used as an antibiotic for the treatment of anaerobic bacterial and parasite illnesses. The widespread use of these drugs in animal feed and the consequent environmental pollution have become significant concerns in recent years. Simple, sensitive, and rapid detection of the antibody in various real samples is demanding research interest. Herein, we report a Nickel-metal organic framework functionalized Multiwalled Carbon nanotubes modified glassy carbon electrode (MWCNT@NiMOFs) as an ultrasensitive and rapid voltammetric sensor for the detection of ornidazole (ORdZ) in a neutral ph.solution. The MWCNT@NiMOFs were prepared using a microwave-assisted solvothermal technique accompanied by an ultrasonication method. The designed MWCNT@NiMOFs offered a low charge transfer resistance (R_ct) of 141 Ω along with excellent electrocatalytic activity, and high current density at the lowered cathodic peak potential (-0.62 V vs Ag/AgCl) for ORdZ detection. The surface adsorption capacity (Γ_s) in terms of surface excess and heterogeneous charge transfer rate constant (k⁰) of the MWCNT@NiMOFs were calculated to be 3.29 × 10^-9 mol cm⁻² and 5.33 × 10^-3 cm s⁻¹, respectively. Under an optimal working condition, differential pulse voltammetry measurements of ORdZ have shown concentration linearity in a window, 100 nm to 10 µM range with excellent sensitivity, 5.69 × 10^-5A µM⁻¹ cm⁻², and detection limit, 26 nM (3.3/s). The designed MWCNT@NiMOFs offered appreciable reproducibility, and repeatability up to 30 days of storage time. The real-time quantitative evaluation of ORdZ in human urine and tap water specimens was done along with ∼ 100 % recovery values. Since the new approach is simple, selective, and separation-free, it can be extendable to a variety of real-time practical applications. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARdS) contributes to higher mortality worldwide. Human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs) have immunomodulatory and regenerative potential. However, the effects of hUC-MSCs as an ARdS treatment remain unclear. We investigated the role of hUC-MSCs in the differentiation of type II alveolar epithelial cells (AECII) by regulating Yes-associated protein (YAP) in ARdS. Male C57BL/6JNarl mice were intratracheally (i.t.) administered lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to induce an ARdS model, followed by a single intravenous (i.v.) dose of hUC-MSCs. hUC-MSCs improved pulmonary function, decreased inflammation on day 3, and mitigated lung injury by reducing the lung injury score and increasing lung aeration (%) in mice on day 7 (p < 0.05). hUC-MSCs inactivated YAP on AECII and facilitated cell differentiation by decreasing Pro-surfactant protein C (Pro-SPC) and galectin 3 (LGALS3) while increasing podoplanin (T1α) in lungs of mice (p < 0.05). In AECII MLE-12 cells, both coculture with hUC-MSCs after LPS exposure and the YAP inhibitor, verteporfin, reduced Pro-SPC and LGALS3, whereas the YAP inhibitor increased T1α expression (p < 0.05). In conclusion, hUC-MSCs ameliorated lung injury of ARdS and regulated YAP to facilitate AECII differentiation. © 2023 The Authors

Cytokines and chemokines play important roles in inflammation and repair following brain injury. M1 microglia are pro-inflammatory which produce cytokines and lead to neural injury;in contrast, M2 microglia are anti-inflammatory, release neurotroph.c factors, and promote neural repair processes. Chemokine CCL5, increased after TBI, shows a neuroprotective function by reducing oxidative stress. CCL5 may contribute to the balance between oxidative stress and immune responses after brain injury. Herein, we investigated the role of CCL5 in microglial polarization after mild traumatic brain injury, focusing on the cerebral cortex.C57BL/6 and CCL5 knockout (CCL5-KO) mice were given a mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) using weight-drop. Neurological parameters such as motor and sensory functions were analyzed by mNSS score, accelerating rotarod, beam walking, and adhesive removal tests. Oxidative stress and neuron damage were measured by NAdph.oxidase activity, hypoxyloprobe staining and FJC. Performance of motor and sensory functions in both WT and CCL5-KO mice were impaired after brain injury which recovered after 7 days-post-injury (dpi) in the WT group but only after 14 days in the CCL5-KO mouse group. RT-qPCR analysis revealed that pro-inflammation cytokines - IL-1β, TNF-α, and IL-6 were higher in CCL5-KO mice compared to WT mice at 4 and 14 dpi. In contrast, M2-like microglia markers - IL-10 and Agr-1 were increased in WT mouse cortical tissue at 4 dpi. Oxidative stress increased both M1 and M2- related cytokine expression in BV2 cells treated with H 2 O 2;CCL5 treatment increased M2- but suppressed M1- related cytokine gene activation. Kim:received his degrees of B.S. in electrical engineering Tri-State University 1959 M.S. in electrical engineering Michigan State University 1960 and Ph.D. in electrical engineering Michigan State University. Air cushion vehicles (ACVs) have operated successfully on commercial routes for about twenty years. The routes are normally quite short; the craft are equipped with radar and radio navigation aids and maintain continuous contact with their terminals. Navigation of these craft, therefore, does not present any unusual difficulty. The introduction of air cushion vehicles into military service, however, can present a very different picture, especially when external navigation aids are not available and the craft must navigate by dead reckoning. This paper considers the problems involved when navigating a high-speed air cushion vehicle by dead reckoning in conditions of poor visibility. A method is presented to assess the ACV's navigational capability under these circumstances. A figure of merit is used to determine the sensitivity of factors which affect navigation such as the range of visibility, point-to-point distance, speed, turning radius and accuracy of onboard equipment. The method provides simplistic but adequate answers and can be used effectively to compare the-capability and cost of alternative navigation concepts.

BACKGROUNd ANd PURPOSE:Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARdS) is a catastroph.c pulmonary inflammatory dysfunction with a high mortality rate. An overwhelming immune response by neutroph.ls is a key feature in infective or sterile ARdS. The formyl peptide receptor 1 (FPR1) is a crucial damage-sensing receptor for inflammatory reactions in the initiation and progression of neutroph.l-mediated ARdS. However, effective targets for controlling dysregulated neutroph.lic inflammatory injuries in ARdS are limited. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH:Human neutroph.ls were used to explore the anti-inflammatory effects of cyclic lipopeptide anteiso-C13-surfactin (IA-1) from marine Bacillus amyloliquefaciens. The lipopolysaccharide-induced model of ARdS in mice was used to determine the therapeutic potential of IA-1 in ARdS. Lung tissues were harvested for histology analyses. KEY RESULTS:The lipopeptide IA-1 inhibited immune responses of neutroph.ls, including respiratory burst, degranulation, and expression of adhesion molecules. IA-1 inhibited the binding of N-formyl peptides to FPR1 in human neutroph.ls and in hFPR1-transfected HEK293 cells. We identified IA-1 as a competitive FPR1 antagonist, thus diminishing the downstream signalling pathways involving calcium, mitogen-activated protein kinases and Akt. Furthermore, IA-1 ameliorated the inflammatory damage to lung tissue, by decreasing neutroph.l infiltration, reducing elastase release and oxidative stress in endotoxemic mice. CONCLUSION ANd IMPLICATIONS:The lipopeptide IA-1 could serve as a therapeutic option for ARdS by inhibiting FPR1-mediated neutroph.lic injury.

Two new 16-hydroxybriaranes, 11-dehydroxybriavioid B (1) and 12-epi-briastecholide L (2), have been isolated from an algal-containing octocoral identified as Briareum stechei. The structures of metabolites 1 and 2 were corroborated by extensive 2d-NMR studies and comparison with literature data. Briarane 2 was found to reduce the release of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) to 87.92 %, at a concentration of 10 μM. © 2023 ph.tochemical Society of Europe

He joined the Electro-Technical Laboratories in 1948 and since then has been involved in research on electromagnetic theory and pattern recognition theory image processing voice recognition and research and development of OCR. After serving as the head of Iijima Special Research Laboratories he became Professor at the Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1986. He because Professor Emeritus of that institute in 1986. He became Professor at Tokyo Engineering University and Professor Emeritus there in 1991. In 1991 he became Professor at the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology and was appointed Vice President of the institute in 1992. He served successively as editor examiner secretary of general affairs inspector counsel committee-head of pattern recognition and specialized studies head of Tokyo chapter and vice president of this institute. In 1991 he became Honorary Member. He received the Paper Award from the Institute four times and the Literary Works Award once. He received the Achievement Award and the Distinguished Service Award in 1976 and 1989 respectively. He received the Purple Ribbon Medal from the Emperor in 1989.

Theoretical studies on Iijima's ''Theory of Pattern Recognition,'' which is known as a method of multiple similarity, have shown clearly that there are situations when it is difficult to determine the viewpoint and visual field, important parameters to introduce topological aspects into the pattern space, observing a figure itself. To cope with this problem, this paper proposes transforming the observed image from a figure f(r) to a second-order differential image rho(r), called ''figure source.'' The aim is to reconstruct the theory in such a way as to enable the application of similarity evaluation methods as in the conventional case, without compromising the current theory, and all the necessary proofs are given. In this paper, the figure source equation as well as rules representing its properties are developed, and several related ph.sical quantities are redefined.

The objectives of this study were to investigate the biocompatibility and hemostatic efficacy of silk fibroin nanofibrils (SFNFs). Unlike a conventional dialysis/freeze-drying process, SFNFs were prepared using a novel shear-induced ph.se-separation method. The morph.logy, particle size distribution, protein secondary structures, and crystalline structures of the resulting SFNFs were respectively investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), laser diffraction (Ld), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and x-ray diffraction (XRd) deconvolution analyses. Polar and non-polar extractants of SFNFs under a bath ratio of 0.2 g/mL were collected after individually soaking them into 0.9% normal saline and cottonseed oil. In vitro hemolysis ratios, biocompatibility, and sensitization tests were carried out. Then, the hemostatic efficacy was assayed using a rat liver punch biopsy model. Compared to dialyzed/freeze-dried SF, the harvested SFNFs revealed high surface area in morph.logy. The median particle size distribution, d50, was 294 μm for SFNFs. Shear-induced hydrogen bonding, crystallization, and ph.se separation tended to give the SFNFs a high crystalline index (CI) and degree of crystallinity (dC). The hemolysis ratio of SFNFs was 0.86 ± 0.40%, and it was classified as being non-hemolytic (0%∼2%). The test results of toxicity and skin sensitization were both negative. Concentration gradient predominantly determining both the diffusion rate and the removal rate of pollutants by adsorbents. An external magnetoph.resis force (F_MEP) is introduced to accelerate the adsorption of metal ions on adsorbents under an alternating magnetic field (AMF). A solenoid-wrapped glass tube (SWGT) containing adsorbents is designed to generate F_MEP in a flowing system. Magnetic Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles (MFs) are coated on polyacrylonitrile microsph.res (PANs) as precursors (PAN@MFs) by Pickering emulsion polymerization. The core@shell polyvinyltetrazole@MFs (PVT@MFs) are obtained as the adsorbents after subsequent cyano-tetrazole conversion of PAN@MFs for the adsorption of Pb(II), Cu(II), and Cr(III) ions. The theoretical adsorption rate constants of these metal ions onto the PVT@MFs in the presence of F_MEP are enhanced by approximately three times under an AMF at 1 kHz and 87.6 G. At a high frequency of 10 kHz, hyperthermia occurs on the PVT@MFs, facilitating the desorption of metal ions from the adsorbents. Compared with reuse using an acidic solution, the magnetic PVT@MFs can be reused up to 10 times by switching the frequency of the AMF between 1 and 10 kHz. Our proposed platform provides a novel methodology with a magnetic adsorbent for metal ions to rapidly improve either the adsorption or desorption processes. © 2024
