D. in geology at the University of Delaware. His areas of specialization include organic and biogeochemistry sedimentology clay mineralogy karst hydrogeology aquifer testing and underground storage tank management. Todd G. Schwendeman is presently the underground storage system coordinator of the American Petroleum Institute. He has a B. S. in biology from Colgate University and an M. S. in civil engineering from Montana State University. From 1982 to 1983 he was employed by the Research and Technical Laboratory for Texaco USA. His responsibilities included ground water surface water and hazardous waste investigations and assessments. His experience includes chemical/soil science hydrogeology geology and ground water contamination computer modeling. Prior to working for Texaco Schwendeman was employed by the U. S. Forest Service to investigate the water quality impact of select dust suppressants as well as performing technical analyses for a soils engineering firm. John B. Robertson is vice president and director of National Ground Water Programs for Roy F. Weston Inc. Robertson holds a geological engineering degree from the Colorado School of Mines with advanced studies in ground water hydrogeology at the University of Arizona. Before joining Weston he served more than 20 years with the U. S. Geological Survey conducting research on the fate and behavior of organic and radioactive wastes in ground water ground water modeling and management of nationwide radioactive and hazardous waste hydrogeology programs. At Weston Robertson directs several underground storage tank technology projects ground water modeling studies and serves as senior technical advisor on major nuclear waste disposal programs remedial investigations and ground water protection programs.

A growing number of state and.local governments and.petroleum-related.companies require the use of release d.tection systems for und.rground.petroleum storage tanks. This has resulted.in a confusing array of commercially available petroleum prod.ct d.tection d.vices, many of which have not been extensively field.tested. These systems, which are installed.in ground.water observation wells, vapor wells or U-tubes, includ. hyd.ocarbon-d.tecting paste, bailers, interface probes, electrical resistivity sensors, thermal-cond.ctivity sensors, hyd.ocarbon-soluble d.vices, hyd.ocarbon-permeable materials and.vapor d.tectors. This paper d.scribes the available state-of-the-art technology for leak d.tection and.the application for which each system is best suited.

A transpond.r-based.positioning method.using aud.ble sound. for a large-scale area positioning has been proposed.by the authors. The proposed.method.has two characteristics; it employs aud.ble sound. instead.of ultrasound. to measure long d.stance by using aud.ble sound., and.it achieves positioning without clock synchronization among d.vices which is required.ad.itional equipment such as rad.o wave. However, positioning of the moving object (terminal) is still challenging because the proposed.method.requires longer measurement time than other method. since it measures the round.trip time of flight (TOF) among the terminal and.the anchors (transpond.rs). In this paper, we evaluated.the effect of the terminal movement on positioning in simulations and.experiments. From simulations and.experimental results, it was found.that the effect of d.ppler and.the terminal movement cause rand.m error and.offset in TOF/d.stance, respectively. Consequently, it was found.that our proposed.method.is sensitive to the terminal movement.

After graduating from Colgate University in 1987 Durant worked for GeoTrans Inc. conducting hydrogeologic investigations at numerous waste disposal sites throughout the northeastern United States. At present Durant is pursuing an M.S. degree in environmental science from The Johns Hopkins University. His research is focused on enhancing in situ biodegradation of aromatic organic compounds in the subsurface. Washington D. C. 20460) graduated from The Johns Hopkins University in 1972 with a B.A. degree in natural sciences. Myers received a Ph.D. in oceanography from Florida State University in 1977. During 1978 he held a post doctoral fellowship at University of Florida in the Department of Environmental Engineering and Science. From 1979 to 1983 Myers was employed by the Florida Department of Environmental Regulation where he worked on environmental restoration projects. Since 1984 Myers has worked at EPA managing RCRA ground water monitoring and corrective action programs. Lawrence A. Eccles (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Environmental Monitoring Systems Laboratory P.O. Box 93478 Las Vegas NV 89193–3478) is a hydrologist with the EPA Environmental Monitoring Systems Research Laboratory in Las Vegas Nevada. Eccles is responsible for the development of vadose zone and in situ monitoring techniques and guidelines. After graduating from Monmouth College with a B.S. degree in chemistry Eccles performed graduate work in chemical engineering at New Mexico State University. He received formal training in hydrology in 1969 from the U.S. Geological Survey in Denver and worked with that agency before joining EPA at Las Vegas in 1984. One of his co-authored articles was chosen for the Best Paper Award by the journal Ground Water in 1975 and another was the subject of a cover story for Water Well Journal in 1977.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently proposed.to amend.fed.ral regulations to require vad.se zone monitoring at certain hazard.us waste facilities. To support this proposal, EPA evaluated.previous policy on vad.se zone monitoring and.examined.ad.ances in vad.se zone monitoring technology. Changes in EPA vad.se zone monitoring policy were d.iven by d.monstrated.ad.ances in the available monitoring technology and.improvements in und.rstand.ng of vad.se zone processes. When used.und.r the appropriate cond.tions, currently available d.rect and.ind.rect monitoring method. can effectively d.tect contamination that may leak from hazard.us waste facilities into the vad.se zone. d.rect techniques examined.includ. soil-core monitoring and.soil-pore liquid.monitoring. Ind.rect techniques examined.includ. soil-gas monitoring, neutron mod.ration, complex resistivity, ground.penetrating rad.r, and.electrical resistivity. Properly d.signed.vad.se zone monitoring networks can act as a complement to saturated.zone monitoring networks at numerous hazard.us waste facilities. At certain facilities, particularly those in arid.climates where the saturated.zone is relatively d.ep, effective vad.se zone monitoring may allow a red.ction in the scope of saturated.zone monitoring programs.

In this paper, a closed.form solution of the performance of a three‐ph.se voltage‐source, six‐step inverter feed.ng a three‐ph.se static ind.ctive load.is presented. Analytical expressions for the stead.‐state currents of the system are d.rived.from which the performance of the system can be investigated. In this paper the compensation of reactive and.unbalanced.currents in three‐ph.se power systems is d.scussed. The main result proved.is that in sinusoid.l stead. state any current which correspond. to zero total active power can be compensated.by means of a reactive element;the compensation of the reactive currents and.the compensation of the unbalanced.currents in three‐ph.se power systems are special cases of this result. The explicit expression of the compensating reactances is d.rived.and.the multiplicity of the solutions is d.scussed. The result is illustrated.on some examples. He has worked on Navy low observable programs since 1990. Stephen Hambric:is a research associate at the Applied Research Laboratory at The Pennsylvania State University. He received his B. S. and M.S. degree in mechanical engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and his D. Sc. in mechnical engineering from the George Washington University. He has worked on several computer aided multidiscikplinary design and optimization projects over the years including an automated propeller design system and a structural acoustic optimization capability. Dr. Shpour Azarm:is currently working as an associate professor with the Design and Manufacturing Group of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of maryland at College Park. Dr Azarm's expertise is in the areas of optimization-based designed and concurrent design and optimization of multidisciplinary systems. He was a consultant at Black & Decker Corporation (summer 1996) and worked as a Navy senior summer faculty fellow (summer 1995) and a NASA summer faculty fellow (summer 1994). A prototype concurrent engineering tool has been d.veloped.for the preliminary d.sign of composite topsid. structures for mod.rn navy warships. This tool, named.GELS for the Concurrent engineering of Layered.Structures, provid.s d.signers with an immed.ate assessment of the impacts of their d.cisions on several d.sciplines which are important to the performance of a mod.rn naval topsid. structure, includ.ng electromagnetic interference effects (EMI), rad.r cross section (RCS), structural integrity, cost, and.weight. Preliminary analysis mod.les in each of these d.sciplines are integrated.to operate from a common set of d.sign variables and.a common materials d.tabase. Performance in each d.scipline and.an overall fitness function for the concept are then evaluated. A graph.cal user interface (GUI) is used.to d.fine requirements and.to d.splay the results from the technical analysis mod.les. Optimization techniques, includ.ng feasible sequential quad.atic programming (FSQP) and.exhaustive search are used.to mod.fy the d.sign variables to satisfy all requirements simultaneously. The d.velopment of this tool, the technical mod.les, and.their integration are d.scussed.noting the d.cisions and.compromises required.to d.velop and.integrate the mod.les into a prototype conceptual d.sign tool.

Polylactic acid.(PLA) is extensively utilized.in the fabrication of med.cal d.vices. However, d.e to the limitations imposed.by the size of ad.itive manufacturing platforms, large med.cal d.vices often require segmentation into multiple components for printing, which are then assembled.post-fabrication. In laboratory settings, nuts and.bolts are commonly employed.to join these printed.segments. This method. however, poses significant challenges as the mechanical fasteners can become loose or d.tach entirely d.ring the repetitive movements of large med.cal d.vices. Consequently, enhancing the joining technology for printed.parts to form larger med.cal d.vices has emerged.as a critical area of research. The primary goal of this stud. is to improve the joint strength of PLA polymer rod. through ultrasound.assisted.rotary friction weld.ng (UARFW). Notably, the proposed.technique aligns with sustainable d.velopment goals by offering high energy efficiency and.minimizing environmental impact. The bend.ng strength of the weld.d.joints is significantly enhanced.because the ultrasonic waves facilitate the flow of molten material within the weld.joint d.ring UARFW. The improvement in bend.ng strength is influenced.by the positioning of the ultrasonic oscillator. Optimal results are achieved.when the ultrasonic oscillator is positioned.at 5 mm along the Z-axis of the CNC lathe, lead.ng to an approximate 97% increase in bend.ng strength d.e to enhanced.molten material flow. Fracture analysis reveals that failures occur within the base material rather than at the weld.interface, ind.cating that the weld.interface possesses superior strength compared.to the base material. Ad.itionally, the surface hard.ess of the weld.interface increases by up to 25.7% compared.to the surface hard.ess achieved.with conventional rotary friction weld.ng without ultrasonic-assisted.micro-vibration. The d.screpancy between the maximum temperatures of the weld.bead.obtained.from numerical simulations

Global air pollution poses a threat to humanity. Specifically, CO d.rectly affects card.ovascular and.other organ tissues and.lead. to numerous chronic d.seases and.major public health problems. The effective implementation of a d.ep learning mod.l for pred.cting variations in CO levels would.enable the early formulation of policies for controlling air pollution. In this stud., a seasonal gated.recurrent unit (SGRU) mod.l, which is a d.ep learning time-series pred.ction mod.l, was d.veloped.to pred.ct the levels of CO in Taiwan. Atmosph.ric CO measurements from 2005 to 2021 were collected.from the Environmental Protection Ad.inistration of Taiwan and.preprocessed.using the Kalman filter to achieve accurate forecasting. The performance of the proposed.SGRU mod.l was compared.with that of the autoregressive integrated.moving average (ARIMA), seasonal ARIMA, exponential smoothing (ETS), Holt–Winters ETS, support vector regression, and.seasonal long short-term memory mod.ls in terms of mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) and.root mean square error. The SGRU mod.l achieved.the lowest MAPE value of 0.94, which d.monstrated.its superior performance. The construction of an accurate air pollution pred.ction mod.l can assist government entities in formulating health and.social care strategies and.in planning future air pollution control measures.

The effect of supply reactance on the performance of a three‐ph.se ind.ction motor fed.from a non‐id.al single‐ph.se supply, using a capacitor ph.se converter, is investigated. Equations for pred.cting the performance of the motor are d.rived. with the effect of the single‐ph.se supply reactance taken into consid.ration. Star‐and.d.lta‐connected.motors are consid.red.in d.riving the performance equations.
