Investing in department Chairs

Gardner Ph.D. (susan.k.gardner@maine.edu) is Director of the University of Maine’s Rising Tide Center for Equity and Inclusive Excellence and the Women’s Gender and Sexuality Studies Program along with her role as Professor of Higher Education. Her research focuses on the intersections of individual development and success within higher education cultures and structures. Data for this article emanate from a $3.3 million grant from the National Science Foundation’s ADVANCE program for which she served as Co-PI. Kelly Ward Ph.D. (kaward@wsu.edu) is Vice Provost for Faculty Development and Recognition at Washington State University where she is also Professor of Higher Education having previously served as the chair of the Department of Educational Leadership Sport Studies and Educational/Counseling Psychology . Dr. Ward is interested in faculty issues including integration of teaching research and service work and family concerns for faculty and leaders faculty career development and faculty diversity in STEM.

The examples of remarks provided at the begining of this article describing their department chairs show two extremes: a department where the chair is highly valued by its faculty and contributes to a positive climate and, conversely, a chair who is seen as a bully and is perceived as a detriment to the work environment. While it is likely that many academic departments fall somewhere in between these two extremes, it is also clear that department chairs play a significant role in the department's work environment and climate. In this perspective piece, the authors describe their efforts in utilizing literature and research to connect to, support, and partner with department chairs to create positive cultures and climates for our faculty. Their hope is that this information can support other leaders in supporting organizational change.

Hispidulin is a naturally occurring flavone known to have various central nervous system(CNS) *** synthetic approaches to synthesizing hispidulin have proven unsatisfactory due to their low feasibility and poor overall *** solve these problems,this study developed a novel scheme for synthesizing hispidulin,which had an improved overall yield as well as more concise reaction steps compared to previous methods ***,using the same synthetic strategy,d-labelled hispidulin was synthesized to investigate its metabolic stability against human liver *** work may produce *** entities for enriching the library of hispidulin-derived compounds.

São Tomé and Príncipe: More than the Land of Cocoa and Coffee

From 2016 to 2017 he took part in a Post-doctoral research program on State Monopolies in China — One Belt One Road studies. In 2014 and 2017 he was awarded the Institute of European Studies in Macau (IEEM) Academic Research Grant which is a major component of the Asia–Europe Comparative Studies Research Project. From 2014 to 2018 he was the Program Coordinator at the Institute of Social and Legal Studies Faculty of Humanities University of Saint Joseph in Macau China. He is currently an Associate Professor and Assistant Dean of the Institute for Research on Portuguese-Speaking Countries at the City University of Macau China. His most recent books published in 2018 and 2019 are respectively titled Steps of Greatness: The Geopolitics of OBOR and The Challenges Development and Promise of Timor-Leste. Anthony Filipe Lobo is a Ph.D. candidate at the Institute for Research on Portuguese-Speaking Countries City University of Macau China. He is currently working as a Research Assistant under Associate Professor Priscilla Mary Roberts — International Business Cohort Programme Coordinator at Faculty of Business. He worked as Assistant Professor of Political Science at the St. Xavier’s College Goa India for 8 years. His teaching areas mainly included International Relations Politics of Goa and India and Human Rights. His current main of area of interest and research is China and the Portuguese Speaking Countries.

The democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe, a small and remote island state, located in the Gulf of Guinea, has long offered little geopolitical and geo-economic interest. This situation is however gradually changing. In fact, since 2016, interest in the country has begun to grow, after the country resumed diplomatic relations with People’s Republic of China (hereafter China) and recognized the “one-China policy”. While the island state and Cabo Verde have followed different development paths in the post-colonial era, both share common features and both have the potential to perform important geopolitical regional roles in the context of the Belt and Road initiative (BRI). This paper discusses São Tomé and Príncipe’s regional engagement in the Gulf of Guinea (GG), the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP), and in multi-level cooperation in light of the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese-Speaking Countries (FM) as well as bilateral cooperation. We argue that São Tomé and Príncipe is of geopolitical value to China and that the island state will serve Chinese interests in extending the BRI in the Gulf of Guinea. The microstate of São Tomé and Príncipe has the potential to transform itself to function as the “Qatar of the Gulf of Guinea”, and contribute to regional stability by providing regional services for shipping, banking, finance, high-quality education, tourism and as an engaged partner. This paper presents a methodological theoretical-inductive and constructivist perspective, combining qualitative, quantitative and non-participant observation.

China Danilo Lemos Henriques is currently the Representative of Timor-Leste at the Forum for Economic and Trade Co-operation between China and Portuguese-Speaking Countries (Macao). He is a Ph.D. candidate as well as a Research Fellow at the City University of Macao. He has held a number of diplomatic posts including in Beijing has lived in China for the past seven years and holds an MBA from the University of Iowa.

This paper will examine the interplay and relationship between bilateral diplomatic relations and economic relations through the lens of political factors, examining the concrete case of the Republic of Portugal and the People’s Republic of China. It will consider their common past — the nations’ historical similarities, their common aims and ideological differences, and analyze the alignment and the synergy developed in the modern era in developing common platforms of aims and will, in terms of political agenda-setting, such as through the issue of the status of the territory of Macao and the relationship with Portuguese-speaking countries (PSCs). It further analyzes the past few decades through the signing of diplomatic protocols, engaged bilateral and multilateral economic diplomacies, and growing commerce and trade links to identify the key trends and extrapolate relevant correlations. We examine the progresses in the relationship between the advancement of Sino-Portuguese diplomatic relations and the development of economic interplay post the 1979 period, following the formal establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations. We argue in favor of an existing positive correlation between acts of economic diplomacy and the development of bilateral economic relations. This paper presents a methodological, theoretical-inductive, and constructivist perspective, combining qualitative, quantitative, and non-participated observation.

In this role she identifies potential external funding opportunities for workforce development and diversity. This includes preparing grants for submission to key federal agencies and working closely with faculty key university executives and department chairs to identify opportunities strengths and potential focus areas for training initiatives. Professor of Psychology and Associate Dean in the Graduate School at WSU. She oversees graduate enrollment management efforts including recruitment admissions and competency-based professional development with micro-credentialing. She is the Wayne State co-PI of the NSF-funded Michigan Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate to support women and underrepresented graduate students in STEM and the Social and Behavioral Sciences.

Alzheimer's disease(Ad) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with multiple ***-amyloid(AB) self-aggregation and overexpression of class IIa histone deacetylases(HdACs) are strongly implicated with Ad *** this study,a series of novel diarylheptanoid derivatives were designed,synthesized and evaluated for use as dual Aβ self-aggregation and class IIa HdAC *** these compounds,4 j,5 c and Se displayed effective inhibitions for AB self-aggregation,HdACS activity and HdAC7 activity with IC50 values of < 10 μ*** compounds contain three common features:(1) a catechol or pyrogallol moiety,(2) a carbonyl linker and(3) an aromatic ring that can function as an HdAC cap and create hydrophobic interactions with Aβ***,compounds 4 j,5 c and 5 e showed no significant cytotoxicity to human neuroblastoma SH-SY5 Y cells and also exhibited neuroprotective effect against H2O2-induced ***,these promising in vitro data highlighted compounds 4 j,5 c and 5 e as lead compounds that are worthy for further investigation.

Lung adenocarcinoma is the most common type of lung cancer. Known risk variants explain only a small fraction of lung adenocarcinoma heritability. Here, we conducted a two-stage genome-wide association study of lung adenocarcinoma of East Asian ancestry (21,658 cases and 150,676 controls; 54.5% never-smokers) and identified 12 novel susceptibility variants, bringing the total number to 28 at 25 independent loci. Transcriptome-wide association analyses together with colocalization studies using a Taiwanese lung expression quantitative trait loci dataset (n = 115) identified novel candidate genes, including FAdS1 at 11q12 and ELF5 at 11p13. In a multi-ancestry meta-analysis of East Asian and European studies, four loci were identified at 2p11, 4q32, 16q23, and 18q12. At the same time, most of our findings in East Asian populations showed no evidence of association in European populations. In our studies drawn from East Asian populations, a polygenic risk score based on the 25 loci had a stronger association in never-smokers vs. individuals with a history of smoking (P = 0.0058). These findings provide new insights into the etiology of lung adenocarcinoma in individuals from East Asian populations, which could be important in developing translational applications.
