Association of long-term ozone exposure with the incidence and progression of hypertension, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease: A national retrospective cohort study

Evidence suggests that ozone is associated with an increased risk of hypertension, diabetes, or chronic kidney disease (CKd). However, the associations of ozone exposure with the dynamic progression of these diseases among Asian population remain unknown. This study included 9,256,945 participants from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research database between 2006 and 2021. Multimorbidity was defined as the coexistence of CKd and either hypertension or diabetes. The ordinary kriging method was used to estimate daily concentrations of ozone, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, suspended fine particles, and suspended particles. Then, five-year average concentrations of pollutants were calculated. We performed multi-state survival models to analyze the association between ozone and dynamic progression of these diseases. during follow-up, 3,555,498 participants experienced hypertension, diabetes, or CKd;656,515 experienced multimorbidity;and 792,555 died. Ozone exposure was significantly associated with incidence of the results in all transitions. The hazard ratios of each IQR (3.57 ppb) increment in ozone for the transition to incident disease were 1.016 [95 % confidence interval (CI): 1.014, 1.017], for the transition to death were 1.04 [95 % CI: 1.036, 1.043], for the transition to multimorbidity were 1.015 [95 % CI: 1.012, 1.017]. Furthermore, with each IQR increase of ozone, the hazard ratios for transition from the disease incidence to death and from multimorbidity to death were 1.03 [95 % CI: 1.026, 1.033] and 1.007 [95 % CI: 1.002, 1.013], respectively. Our results suggest long-term exposure to ozone might be an important determinant for the incidence and dynamic progression of hypertension, diabetes, and CKd in Taiwan. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

In modern-day medical practices, practitioners and physicians are adapting to new technologies and utilizing new methods of communication with patients. Telemedicine, or telehealth, is one of the newest innovations in medical technology, enabling practitioners to communicate with their patients over the phone, video conferencing, or chat. However, clinical data and sentiments/attitudes are often not reflected in the practitioner’s analysis and diagnosis of the patients they serve. As a solution to the problem of data incompleteness in telehealth, THNN allows medical practices to accommodate for possible missing or incomplete data and provide a greater quality of care overall. Through an ensemble of Natural Language Processing (NLP) and AI-enabled systems, THNN produces sentiment and incompleteness mapping to provide seamless *** relevance— The method presented utilizes telehealth natural language data to process the sentiments of patients and the incompleteness found in the conversations, increasing the possibility of improved healthcare outcomes.

Influence of bonding variance on electron affinity in graphene quantum dot-barium titanate nanocomposites for drug delivery system

Although chemotherapy remains a prevalent option in cancer treatment, its adverse effects on normal cells and suboptimal pharmacokinetics often limits its effectiveness. To address these challenges, this study successfully developed a new multifunctional drug delivery system comprising a covalent composite of graphene quantum dots and barium titanate nanoparticles. Notably, despite numerous reports on the surface modification of graphene quantum dots, studies focusing on cancer cell inhibition via different covalent bonds are scarce. To bridge this gap, this system was synthesized using eco-friendly esterification and amidation pathways. The anticancer drug doxorubicin was employed as a model drug, and hyaluronic acid was used to encapsulate the delivery system, enhancing its sustained release capabilities. Comprehensive material characterization confirmed the successful synthesis of the system. Its high drug loading capacity and acid-sensitive release can be attributed to the unique structure of the graphene quantum dots. Subsequent in vitro and in vivo biological evaluations not only demonstrated the system's remarkable cancer inhibition efficacy but also accentuated the distinct impacts of the two bonding types. The underlying mechanism is believed to involve bonding affinity and electron transfer, findings that are corroborated by the experimental data. Additionally, results from animal models provide clear evidence for the potential application of this system (HA-dOX-GQd@BTNPs) in cancer therapeutics and imaging. In conclusion, this research elucidates the variances in drug carrier efficacy based on different covalent bond modifications for cancer treatment and introduces a novel drug delivery system that synergistically combines imaging and targeting capabilities. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.

Aim: To investigate the occurrence of auditory impairments in individuals with dysphonia and to describe the results of behavioral and electrophysiological audiological assessments in this population. Study design: A scoping review. Method: A scoping review following the guidelines of the Joanna Briggs Institute Manual for Evidence Synthesis for Scoping Reviews and PRISMA-ScR. A search was carried out using the electronic databases PubMed, Scielo, and Lilacs, as well as the gray literature via Google Scholar. Using the Rayyan platform, the selection and extraction of data from the studies was carried out independently and blindly by two reviewers, with excellent agreement. The studies included in the review were subjected to extraction of the following information for analysis: authors, year of publication, objective, sample characteristics, dysphonia classification, audiological assessment procedure, and conclusion. Results: About 100 studies were found, and 13 eligible studies were included in the analysis. Of the studies included, 92.3% (n = 12) adopted cross-sectional designs, 76.9% (n = 10) investigated auditory functions in individuals with behavioral dysphonia, and 23.1% (n = 3) with organic dysphonia. The samples consisted of children in 53.8% (n = 7) of the studies and adults in 46.2% (n = 6), both with dysphonia. Around 53.80% (n = 7) of the studies included control groups without dysphonia. As for audiological assessment methods, 53.8% (n = 7) used behavioral tests of central auditory processing, 15.4% (n = 2) electrophysiological assessment, and 30.8% (n = 4) a combination of both. Conclusion–: Individuals with dysphonia, especially of the behavioral type, may have deficits in auditory function. The main impairments refer to central auditory processing, especially in skills involving temporal processing, figure-ground skills, and auditory closure. Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is most commonly accident injury in modern society. The deterioration of cognition and memory is a common phenomenon caused by TBI. Most of the basic experiments used rats for pathological research. Moreover, an eight-arm maze was often used to test the spatial learning behavior of brain diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease and TBI. However, most of maze experimental data were collected in manual records. This process would take a lot of manpower and time. Therefore, the research built an automatic tracking trajectory system of the eight-arm maze to collect experiment data. Furthermore, the path trajectory of the rat can be recorded in time. Finally, these path trajectory data were used to analysis behavior feature of TBI animals. The results showed that TBI rats have a 40%~80% chance of having a trajectory to the right.

Human health/socioeconomic development is closely correlated to environmental pollution, highlighting the need to monitor contaminants in the real environment with reliable devices such as biosensors. Recently, variety of biosensors gained high attention and employed as application, in real-time, and cost-effective analytical tools for healthy environment. For continuous environmental monitoring, it is necessary for portable, cost-effective, quick, and flexible biosensing devices. These benefits of the biosensor strategy are related to the Sustainable development Goals (SdGs) established by the United Nations (UN), especially with reference to clean water and sources of energy. However, the relationship between SdGs and biosensor application for environmental monitoring is not well understood. In addition, some limitations and challenges might hinder the biosensor application on environmental monitoring. Herein, we reviewed the different types of biosensors, principle and applications, and their correlation with SdG 6, 12, 13, 14, and 15 as a reference for related authorities and administrators to consider. In this review, biosensors for different pollutants such as heavy metals and organics were documented. The present study highlights the application of biosensor for achieving SdGs. Current advantages and future research aspects are summarized in this paper. Background: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLd) is the most common cause of chronic liver disease worldwide. Sarcopenia is a syndrome characterized by progressive and generalized loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength, which is commonly associated with NAFLd. Adenosine-to-inosine editing, catalysed by adenosine deaminase acting on RNA (AdAR), is an important post-transcriptional modification of genome-encoded RNA transcripts. Three AdAR gene family members, including AdAR1, AdAR2 and AdAR3, have been identified. However, the functional role of AdAR2 in obesity-associated NAFLd and sarcopenia remains unclear. Methods: AdAR2^+/+/GluR-B^R/R mice (wild type [WT]) and AdAR2^−/−/GluR-B^R/R mice (AdAR2 knockout [KO]) were subjected to feeding with standard chow or high-fat diet (HFd) for 20 weeks at the age of 5 weeks. The metabolic parameters, hepatic lipid droplet, grip strength test, rotarod test, muscle weight, fibre cross-sectional area (CSA), fibre types and protein associated with protein degradation were examined. Systemic and local tissues serum amyloid A1 (SAA1) were measured. The effects of SAA1 on C2C12 myotube atrophy were investigated. Results: AdAR2 KO mice fed with HFd exhibited lower body weight (−7.7%, P < 0.05), lower liver tissue weight (−20%, P < 0.05), reduced liver lipid droplets in concert with a decrease in hepatic triglyceride content (−24%, P < 0.001) and liver injury (P < 0.01). AdAR2 KO mice displayed protection against HFd-induced glucose intolerance, insulin resistance and dyslipidaemia. Skeletal muscle mass (P < 0.01), muscle strength (P < 0.05), muscle endurance (P < 0.001) and fibre size (CSA;P < 0.0001) were improved in AdAR2 KO mice fed with HFd compared with WT mice fed with HFd. This report presents some of the key laboratory electrochemical battery testing methods that are used in fuel cell research. Methods such as voltammetry, chronoamperometry, chronopotentiometry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy are of major importance. All the electrochemical corrosion tests are performed through a tri-electrode polarization cell setup containing a reference electrode, a counter electrode, and the working electrode (metal sample of interest) in an electrolyte solution. All three electrodes are connected to a potentiostat. Corrosion of metal occurs through an oxidation-reduction (redox) reaction. All the above testing methods can be performed by manipulating the current and voltage responses from the cell. Potentiostatic experiments (voltammetry and chronoamperometry) are performed using constant potential at the working electrode and recording the current response while galvanostatic experiments (chronopotentiometry) and vice versa. The measured data through all these experiments can provide very useful information regarding reaction reversibility, diffusion coefficient, reduction potential, rate of chemical reaction, durability, adsorption, voltage losses, and effective resistance to the mass and charge transport offered by electrode material. The technologies and applications are characterized by overall perception, tight connection, and intelligent responses. This study explored the application of the IoE in education such that these features can be utilized in educational institutions and areas designated for educational services. For how to store and transport hydrogen, the first thought is to store hydrogen directly in the cylinder. However, this method is not desirable, because generally at least 700 atm high pressure, the hydrogen contained in the cylinder to be useful. Therefore it is very unsafe at such high pressures. In This paper, we design and production of a new generation of solid-state hydrogen storage and discharge container. The goal of “development of solid-state hydrogen storage technology” is to break through the bottlenecks of hydrogen storage technology safety, hydrogen storage density, high-efficiency hydrogen absorption and release, transportation safety, and engineering practice.
