While temozolomide (TMZ) has been a cornerstone in the treatment of newly diagnosed glioblastoma (GBM), a significant challenge has been the emergence of resistance to TMZ, which compromises its clinical benefits. Additionally, the nonspecificity of TMZ can lead to detrimental side effects. Although TMZ is capable of penetrating the blood-brain barrier (BBB), our research addresses the need for targeted therapy to circumvent resistance mechanisms and reduce off-target effects. This study introduces the use of PEGylated mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) with octyl group modifications (C8-MSN) as a nanocarrier system for the delivery of docetaxel (dTX), providing a novel approach for treating TMZ-resistant GBM. Our findings reveal that C8-MSN is biocompatible in vitro, and dTX@C8-MSN shows no hemolytic activity at therapeutic concentrations, maintaining efficacy against GBM cells. Crucially, in vivo imaging demonstrates preferential accumulation of C8-MSN within the tumor region, suggesting enhanced permeability across the blood-brain tumor barrier (BBTB). When administered to orthotopic glioma mouse models, dTX@C8-MSN notably prolongs survival by over 50%, significantly reduces tumor volume, and decreases side effects compared to free dTX, indicating a targeted and effective approach to treatment. The apoptotic pathways activated by dTX@C8-MSN, evidenced by the increased levels of cleaved caspase-3 and PARP, point to a potent therapeutic mechanism. Collectively, the results advocate dTX@C8-MSN as a promising candidate for targeted therapy in TMZ-resistant GBM, optimizing drug delivery and bioavailability to overcome current therapeutic limitations. © 2024 The Authors. This study proposed a novel extraction method of c-Fos protein regions in dAB(3,3'-diaminobenzidine)-stained mouse brain slice images using the U-Net model combined with the multi-channelization and 1×1 convolution techniques. Our U-Net m odel, called 1× 1 conv U-Net, was applied to three dAB- strainedmouse slice images whose resolutions were 1000x1000 pixels. The experimental results demonstrated that the 1×1 conv U-Net outperformed the conventional U-Net. © 2024 IEEE.

programming ability is the core ability of this era and can be obtained and improved through practice. In this paper, an Automated programming Assessment system based on Mastery learning and Peer competition (APAMP) was proposed and developed. APAMP allows students to practice repeatedly by providing immediate feedback after their programs are submitted. It also presents an analytical dashboard as a competition mechanism for students to visualize their learning performance and compare their performance with peers. By incorporating APAMP into programming courses, students can master programming skills through repeated practice, and their enthusiasm for learning programming can also be encouraged by peer competition. To evaluate the effects of APAMP on the learning performance of students with programming language learning and novice students, a quasi-experiment was conducted in a high school. The experimental results showed that the learning achievement of the two groups of students improved significantly. Moreover, the learning attitude of students in the experienced group improved significantly, with the experienced students benefiting more from the system than the novice students. In fact, the novice students showed a significant decline in learning attitude and learning motivation, which was contrary to our intuition. © 2021 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Assessment of key risk factors in the cold chain logistics operations of container carriers using best worst method

Given that reefer containers are highly dependent on their temperature control function, container carriers must pay particular attention to the risks occurring during cold chain logistics. Assessment of cold chain safety risks can therefore reduce chance of accidents and concern for product damage. The goal of this study was to use the best worst method (BWM) to assess key risk factors in container carriers' cold chain logistics operations. After gathering relevant information from the literature and conducting expert interviews, this study preliminarily determined risk factors affecting container carriers' cold chain logistics operations, and obtained 15 risk factors in 3 risk assessment aspects. A BWM model was then developed and tested using empirical data from a questionnaire survey of experts. The results indicated that (1) the "shipper risk" aspect is the most important risk link for container carriers' cold chain logistics;(2) the 6 key risk factors with the greatest effect on container carriers' cold chain logistics are "excessively long container loading time," "insufficient pre-cooling of goods," "poor or improper product packaging," "dockside or shipboard power supply system malfunction," "improper cargo stacking," and "human error affecting temperature settings." As a reference for container carriers engaging in cold chain logistics, this study also suggests risk management strategies intended to enhance cold chain safety and performance. © 2023

An audio watermarking technique using Complementary Ensemble Empirical Mode decomposition and group differential relations of average absolute amplitudes of the last Intrinsic Mode Function (IMF) is proposed. By using group differential relations, the relationship with neighboring samples in the last IMF is well preserved, and near-imperceptibility can be achieved. Placing a watermark on low-frequency components, the last IMF, which is perceptually significant, therefore makes the watermark difficult to be removed. The embedding watermark, which is a logo image in our experiment, is processed by Arnold transformation, secret key encryption, and Bose–Chaudhuri–Hocquenghem coding to enhance robustness and security. Experimental results of the signal-to-noise ratio fit the recommendations of imperceptibility of the International Federation of the phonographic Industry. The average Objective difference Grade (an objective measure that correlates very well with subjective assessment) and subjective quality assessment were performed to evaluate the imperceptibility. Furthermore, our method accomplishes robustness under 13 different categories of attacks, including noise corruption, amplitude scaling, echo addition, resampling, re-quantization, low-pass filtering, MPEG-1 Audio Layer III compression, digital-to-Analog/Analog-to-digital conversion, cropping, time shift, zero thresholding, jittering, and combined attacks. © 2023 Authors. Indoor understanding is currently a topic that is widely studied in the field of machine learning. Furniture is the most common object in indoor scenes, just as various vehicles are most commonly seen in street scenes. Any object is made up of a combination of functional components. Functional component dismantling and reassembly is an important development for industrial manufacturing to improve efficiency and reduce costs. In the context of understanding indoor scenes, we focus on building a dataset that uses real-world furniture images as part labels. Building a large-scale furniture dataset is very challenging, first of all, the existing dataset has too few real images of furniture, mostly 3d model images, but the diversity of furniture in the real world far exceeds that of 3d models, and real images help improve the calculation speed of model training. Most of the published furniture data is poorly aligned with the annotation data, and even fewer materials perform component segmentation labeling using real furniture images. MontageNet has become a rich resource for part-level 3d shape analysis, semantic understanding, instance segmentation and 3d reconstruction, and other research. Our accompanying empirical studies provide an in-depth analysis of dataset characteristics and performance evaluation of several state-of-the-art methods against our benchmarks. © 2023 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Existing works in federated learning (FL) often assume either full client or uniformly distributed client participation. However, in reality, some clients may never participate in FL training (aka incomplete client participation) due to various system heterogeneity factors. A popular solution is the server-assisted federated learning (SA-FL) framework, where the server uses an auxiliary dataset. despite empirical evidence of SA-FL's effectiveness in addressing incomplete client participation, theoretical understanding of SA-FL is lacking. Furthermore, the effects of incomplete client participation in conventional FL are poorly understood. This motivates us to rigorously investigate SA-FL. Toward this end, we first show that conventional FL is not PAC-learnable under incomplete client participation in the worst case. Then, we show that the PAC-learnability of FL with incomplete client participation can indeed be revived by SA-FL, which theoretically justifies the use of SA-FL for the first time. Lastly, to provide practical guidance for SA-FL training under incomplete client participation, we propose the SAFARI (server-assisted federated averaging) algorithm that enjoys the same linear convergence speedup guarantees as classic FL with ideal client participation assumptions, offering the first SA-FL algorithm with convergence guarantee. Extensive experiments on different datasets show SAFARI significantly improves the performance under incomplete client participation. Copyright 2024 by the author(s)

This study employed a quasi-experimental method to explore differences in students’ learning performance and engagement between visual and textual language programming environments. Specifically, this study examined how strongly engagement dimensions affect participants’ learning achievement in a Scratch experimental setting. One hundred and thirty-two undergraduate students participated. The results revealed that participants with Scratch intervention outperformed those with text-based language instructions in terms of performance and behavioral, emotional, cognitive, and agentic engagement. The findings indicated that engagement significantly predicted student academic success in a visual learning environment. This study concluded that visual programming tools such as Scratch help novices engaged and effectively learn core aspects of programming concepts. Additionally, student engagement deepens an understanding of predictions of programmers’ behaviors and achievements and mechanisms behind the effectiveness of visualization intervention. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Self-explanatory artificial intelligence has lately gained prominence as researchers and practitioners strive to make their methodologies more understandable. It is not contentious to assert that researching how individuals explain to one another may be a useful beginning point for explanation in artificial intelligence, given that the majority of this research has focused on publicly explaining decisions or actions to a human observer. However, it is reasonable to say that the vast bulk of self-explanatory artificial intelligence research is based solely on the researchers’ subjective opinions of what constitutes a "good" explanation. Extensive and essential study in science and technology has been conducted on the definition, creation, selection, assessment, and presentation of explanations by humans. This study contends that people use certain cognitive biases and social expectations in the explanation process. This paper covers relevant studies from several fields and makes the case that self-explainable artificial intelligence should expand on some current research.
