The brain modifies its synaptic strengths during learning in order to better adapt to its environment. However, the underlying plasticity rules that govern learning are unknown. Many proposals have been suggested, including Hebbian mechanisms, explicit error backpropagation, and a variety of alternatives. It is an open question as to what specific experimental measurements would need to be made to determine whether any given learning rule is operative in a real biological system. In this work, we take a "virtual experimental" approach to this problem. Simulating idealized neuroscience experiments with artificial neural networks, we generate a large-scale dataset of learning trajectories of aggregate statistics measured in a variety of neural network architectures, loss functions, learning rule hyperpa-rameters, and parameter initializations. We then take a discriminative approach, training linear and simple non-linear classifiers to identify learning rules from features based on these observables. We show that different classes of learning rules can be separated solely on the basis of aggregate statistics of the weights, activations, or instantaneous layer-wise activity changes, and that these results generalize to limited access to the trajectory and held-out architectures and learning curricula. We identify the statistics of each observable that are most relevant for rule identification, finding that statistics from network activities across training are more robust to unit undersampling and measurement noise than those obtained from the synaptic strengths. Our results suggest that activation patterns, available from electrophysiological recordings of post-synaptic activities on the order of several hundred units, frequently measured at wider intervals over the course of learning, may provide a good basis on which to identify learning rules.

The study aimed to evaluate the impact of occupational noise on hearing loss among healthcare workers using audiometry. A longitudinal study was conducted with a six-month follow-up period in a hospital with 21 participants, divided into high-noise-exposure (HNE) and low-noise-exposure (LNE) groups. Mean noise levels were higher in the HNE group (70.4 ± 4.5 dBA), and hearing loss was measured using pure-tone audiometry at baseline and follow-up. Among various ECM proteins, collagen type-I is a widely distributed extracellular matrix (ECM) protein expressed in different types of cancers and induces tumor growth and drug resistance. To prove this, in the present work we co-cultured colon cancer cells (HCT-8) and fibroblast cells (NIH3T3) in a PdMS based open welled micro 3d (μ-3d) cell culture chip. This co-culture model was employed to study the interaction of cancer cells and stromal cells and revealed that collagen treatment before chemotherapy can be a game-changer in a colon cancer treatment. © 2020 CBMS-0001

Forecasting global foreign trade is essential for developing government trade policies and management strategies for multinational corporations. However, achieving an accurate trade forecast is challenging because of the complex structural relationships between exports, imports and other economic variables. Many traditional forecasting models, such as time series, econometric, and machine learning, provide less accurate forecasts for trade data. This paper proposes an ensemble learning approach to improve forecasting performance by hybridizing the structural relationships between trade and deep learning models to predict foreign trade for ten major countries. The proposed method first establishes a cointegration relationship between exports and imports and their structural variables. The cointegrated models are then used to predict the future of trade, which is used as a benchmark model for comparison. A hybrid deep learning algorithm uses the cointegrated variables as input variables to predict trade data, and then are compared with time-series forecasts and economic structural models. The experimental results reveal that the ensemble learning method can achieve excellent forecasting performance for the tested periods of trade data. In most cases, the root means square error and mean absolute percentage error values are smaller than the time series and economic structural models. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd

The ubiquitous and refractory benzophenone (BP)-type ultraviolet filters, which are also endocrine disruptors, were commonly detected in the aquatic matrix and could not be efficiently removed by conventional wastewater treatment processes, thus causing extensive concern. Herein, a novel ternary nanocomposite, P-g-CN/α-Bi2O3/WO3 (P-gBW), was successfully fabricated by mixing cocalcinated components and applied to the decomposition of BP-type ultraviolet filters. The dual-Z-scheme heterostructure of P-gBW enhances visible-light absorption, efficiently facilitates separation and mobility, and prolongs the lifetime of photoinduced charge carriers via double charge transfer mechanisms. The optimum 95 wt% P-gBW exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity, degrading 96% 4-hydroxy benzophenone (4HBP) within 150 min and 93% 2,2′,4,4′-tetrahydroxybenzophenone (BP-2) within 100 min under visible-light illumination, respectively. The pseudo-first-order rate constant of 4HBP (1.15 h−1) was 6.8-, 3.1-, 3.3- and 2.2-fold higher than those of WO3, P-g-CN, α-Bi2O3, and P-g-CN/α-Bi2O3, respectively, while that of BP-2 (1.71 h−1) was 5.2-, 2.2-, 3.2- and 1.5-fold higher, respectively. The improved photocatalytic degradation was attributed to efficient photoinduced charge carrier separation and migration and prevented the recombination of electron holes, as verified by photoluminescence, transient photocurrent response, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Trapping experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance, and band energy position indicated an efficient dual-Z-scheme heterostructure. © 2023 Elsevier Inc.

To bridge western and traditional Chinese medicine, research in Chinese medicinal herbs has become an increasing trend for discovering new effective antiviral drugs. In addition, this pioneer study disclosed that synergistic interactions of electron-mediating contents in herbal medicines through electrochemical catalysis of electron shuttles could trigger effective disease treatment via electron transport stimulation as the platform of microbial fuel cells (MFCs) indicated. Hence, this study first attempted to decipher the bioenergy-assisted action of R. palmatum L. for antiviral assessment. Several processing methods can be performed to maximize phytoconstituent extraction and efficiency that can influence the chemical profile and bioactivity of herbal samples. To generate a comparative analysis, R. palmatum L. roots are subjected to several processing methods and are evaluated through phytochemical screening, antioxidant activity, high-performance liquid chromatography analysis, and dual-chambered-MFCs for bioenergy production. Molecular docking analysis of marker substances was also employed to establish the potential of R. palmatum L. for antiviral drug development. Ethanol extracts are revealed to be toxic for MFCs despite having increased phenolic compounds. Overall, vinegar-processed Rheum palmatum water extracts exhibited the highest bioenergy-stimulating capabilities and antioxidant activity. Furthermore, rhein from the same extract was found to exhibit strong binding affinities towards Flaviviridate viruses and can potentially inhibit NS5B polymerase from the Hepatitis C Virus. This study clearly suggests the potential of R. palmatum L. roots as a promising herb for antiviral drug development. This work also provided a novel protocol for prescreening candidate species for antiviral drug development. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.

Modelling and forecasting daily average temperature in Bangkok, Thailand

In order to predict the occurrence of extreme climate events, forecasting and describing dynamic changes in temperature are essential. Understanding these events will allow action to be taken in order to minimize their associated effects. In this paper, we present a feasible model for estimating daily average temperatures in Bangkok, Thailand. The daily maximum and minimum temperature observations between 2006 and 2021 were collected from the Thai Meteorological department for the study. The Fourier series was then applied to the average daily temperature as the mean function, and then the auto-regressive integrated moving average, ARIMA (4,1,1), was used to predict the residuals that occurred from the mean function to describe the evolution of the temperature. Analysis of the root mean square error (RMSE) value from the models, which is 0.9536, revealed that the methods fitted the data quite well.

dengue virus (dENV) is a significant global health threat, causing millions of cases worldwide each year. developing antiviral drugs for dENV has been a challenging endeavor. Our previous study identified anti-dENV properties of two (-)-cytisine derivatives contained substitutions within the 2-pyridone core from a pool of 19 (-)-cytisine derivatives. This study aimed to expand on the previous research by investigating the antiviral potential of N-methylcytisine thio (mCy thio) derivatives against dENV, understanding the molecular mechanisms of antiviral activity for the active thio derivatives. The inhibitory assays on dENV-2-induced cytopathic effect and infectivity revealed that mCy thio derivatives 3 ((1R,5S)-3-methyl-1,2,3,4,5,6-hexahydro-8H-1,5-methanopyrido[1,2-a][1,5]diazocine-8-thione) and 6 ((1S,5R)-3-methyl-2-thioxo-1,2,3,4,5,6-hexahydro-8H-1,5-methanopyrido[1,2-a][1,5]diazocin-8-one) were identified as the active compounds against both dENV-1 and dENV-2. derivative 6 displayed robust antiviral activity against dENV-2, with EC₅₀ values ranging from 0.002 to 0.005 μM in different cell lines. derivative 3 also exhibited significant antiviral activity against dENV-2. The study found that these compounds are effective at inhibiting dENV-2 at both the entry stage (including virus attachment) and post-entry stages of the viral life cycle. The study also investigated the inhibition of the dENV-2 NS2B-NS3 protease activity by these compounds. derivative 6 demonstrated notably stronger inhibition compared to mCy thio 3, revealing its dual antiviral action at both the entry and post-entry stages. Molecular docking simulations indicated that mCy thio derivatives 3 and 6 bind to the domain I and III of the dENV E protein, as well as the active of NS2B-NS3 protease, suggesting their molecular interactions with the virus. The dual-specificity tyrosine-phosphorylation-regulated kinase 1 A (dYRK1A) presents a promising therapeutic target for neurological diseases. However, current inhibitors lack selectivity, which can lead to unexpected side effects and increase the difficulty of studying dYRK1A. Therefore, identifying selective inhibitors targeting dYRK1A is essential for reducing side effects and facilitating neurological disease research. This study aimed to discover dYRK1A inhibitors through a screening pipeline incorporating a deep neural network (dNN) model. Herein, we report an optimized model with an accuracy of 0.93 on a testing set. The pipeline was then performed to identify potential dYRK1A inhibitors from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) library. Four novel dYRK1A inhibitors were identified, and compounds NSC657702 and NSC31059 were noteworthy for their potent inhibition, with IC₅₀ values of 50.9 and 39.5 nM, respectively. NSC31059 exhibited exceptional selectivity across 70 kinases. The compounds also significantly reduced dYRK1A-induced tau phosphorylation at key sites associated with the pathology of neurodegenerative diseases. Moreover, they promoted tubulin polymerization, suggesting a role in microtubule stabilization. Cytotoxicity assessments further confirmed the neuronal safety of the compounds. Together, the results demonstrated a promising screening pipeline and novel dYRK1A inhibitors as candidates for further optimization and development. © 2024 The Authors

We present the review and meta-analysis of the prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus isolates from various food sources. PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, and science direct were searched for articles from 2012 to 2022. S. aureus is a pathogenic bacterium present in natural skin flora, that can cause a variety of diseases with different degrees of severity. Although its natural habitat are humans and animals, S. aureus can be found in water, soil and contaminated surfaces. Consequently, multiple routes can be involved in food contamination by S. aureus. The bacterium was most prevalent in ready-to-eat food (35.1 %), meat (21.7 %) and dairy products (18.5 %). Among contaminated products, meat products represented 59.51 % and were distributed as such: 44 % for beef meat, 28 % for pork meat, 22 % for chicken meat, 6 % for turkey meat. Antibiotic resistance studies showed resistance to penicillins is the most common (61 %) while resistant to quinolones, amphenicols and rifamycins were found to be low (<10 %). Pooled prevalence of antimicrobial resistance in isolated strains revealed that 68 % of all isolates carried resistance to at least one antibiotic in clinical use. Future studies are needed to assess antimicrobial resistance, food-associated stress and biofilm formation of the foodborne pathogen S. aureus. Furthermore, improved diagnostic tools and implementation of surveillance programs could lead to reduction of the burden caused by S. aureus. © 2024 The Authors
