Insights into the removal of microplastics from water using biochar in the era of COVId-19: A mini review

Microplastics pollution is a modern-day prevalent challenge that poses serious threats to the general wellbeing and sustainability of the planet. due to their innately persistent nature, extreme durability, and high stability, they exhibit long residence time and could be transferred through the ecological chains. Current days have witnessed an increase in the accumulation of microplastics waste and debris. This is due to the protective measures imposed by governments and the World Health Organization (WHO) as part of the containment and mitigation efforts of the COVId-19 pandemic. Therefore, the development of versatile, robust, flexible, and efficient removal systems has become a necessity in order to control microplastics pollution. Herein, we review the repercussions of the pandemic on the state of microplastics contamination, sources and identification methods of microplastics in water, their toxicity and risks on the environment, as well as their degradation and conventional removal methods. This review focuses on adsorption and the use of biochar as one of the emerging adsorbents for the removal of microplastics. The efficiency of adsorption using biochar, mechanisms, and applications are discussed. The review addresses the increased rates of microplastics occurrence especially during the era of COVId-19, which requires more efficient and lower cost removal methods. The major conclusions drawn from this review include emphasizing the significant potential of adsorption processes in the removal of microplastics. Biochar is present among the available and most efficient biomass adsorbents especially when combined with other materials. Composite biochar materials play an important role in enhancing the removal and immobility of microplastics. However, more research is required to investigate this at a larger scale, improve efficiency and immobilization techniques. © 2021 The Authors

Treatment-resistant depression (TRd) is a condition wherein patients with depression fail to respond to antidepressant trials. A new form of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), called theta-burst stimulation (TBS), which includes intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS) and continuous theta-burst stimulation (cTBS), is non-inferior to rTMS in TRd treatment. However, the mechanism of iTBS and cTBS underlying the treatment of TRd in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) remains unclear. Hence, we applied foot-shock stress as a traumatic event to develop a TRd rat model and investigated the different mechanisms of iTBS and cTBS. The iTBS and cTBS treatment were effective in depressive-like behavior and active coping behavior. The iTBS treatments improved impaired long-term potentiation and long-term depression (LTd), whereas the cTBS treatment only improved aberrant LTd. Moreover, the decrease in mature brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BdNF)-related protein levels were reversed by iTBS treatment. The decrease in proBdNF-related protein expression was improved by iTBS and cTBS treatment. Both iTBS and cTBS improved the decreased α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid receptors and downregulation of mammalian target of the rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway. The iTBS produces both excitatory and inhibitory synaptic effects, and the cTBS only produces inhibitory synaptic effects in the PFC. © 2023

Community shift of aquatic insects following waste-water treatment implementation at dongda Creek, Taichung City, Taiwan

Urbanization and industrialization have severely degraded Taiwan’s freshwater ecosystems, including dongda Creek in Taichung City, which received 10,000 tons of wastewater daily. To address this, a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) was constructed by Tunghai University and the Taichung City Government, and its ecological impact was assessed through water quality and aquatic insect diversity monitoring before (2019–2020) and after implementation (2021–2023). Water quality measurements included temperature, ph, nutrients, and dissolved oxygen, while aquatic insect communities were analyzed using diversity indices and multivariate techniques. Results revealed significant water quality improvements, including reduced fat content and total nitrogen levels, although nitrate concentrations increased. The dominance of pollution-tolerant Chironomidae declined post-WWTP, while sensitive taxa such as Baetidae, Hydrophilidae, and Libellulidae emerged, accompanied by significant increases in diversity indices (taxa richness, Shannon, and Simpson). Seasonal patterns in insect diversity became more pronounced after the WWTP became operational. Environmental variables such as ph, temperature, and biochemical oxygen demand significantly influenced insect distributions, with Chironomidae thriving under poor conditions and sensitive taxa increasing as water quality improved. This study demonstrates that WWTP implementation can enhance water quality and foster ecological recovery, as evidenced by the recolonization of sensitive aquatic insect taxa and increased diversity. These findings highlight the effectiveness of restoration projects like WWTPs in improving ecosystem health and underscore the importance of ecological monitoring in freshwater management and conservation. dongda Creek serves as a valuable case study for guiding urban river restroration efforts in similar contexts.

Two new 16-hydroxybriaranes, 11-dehydroxybriavioid B (1) and 12-epi-briastecholide L (2), have been isolated from an algal-containing octocoral identified as Briareum stechei. The structures of metabolites 1 and 2 were corroborated by extensive 2d-NMR studies and comparison with literature data. Briarane 2 was found to reduce the release of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) to 87.92 %, at a concentration of 10 μM. © 2023 phytochemical Society of Europe

Forested watersheds provide clean water and stabilize hydrological services. Associations between vegetation growth and climatic variation significantly influence hydrological regimes, which are region-dependent. However, the climate-phenology-hydrology nexus has rarely been investigated in subtropical forested watersheds, which remain underexplored due to their year-round vegetation activity complicating the phenological shift detection, and highly variable seasonal rainfall introducing uncertainty in hydrological modeling. Understanding these dynamics provides insights into subtropical forests' buffering capacities against climatic fluctuations and their water regulation. This study examined monthly temperature and precipitation impacts on vegetation growth using monthly photosynthetic active vegetation cover fraction (PV) from satellite imagery, assessing the effects of spring and summer rainfall (2001−2020) on vegetation phenology and streamflow in subtropical Fushan (annual precipitation >4000 mm) and tropical Leinhuachi (annual precipitation >2300 mm) Experimental Forests. PV and temperature exhibited linear correlations without time-lag effect (R² = 0.51–0.57, p < 0.001). However, PV and precipitation had no time-lag in Fushan, but demonstrated a log-linear relationship with two-month lag in Leinhuachi (R² = 0.15–0.59, p < 0.001), highlighting rainfall accumulation during the relatively dry season (winter-spring) as critical for vegetation growth. Structural equation modeling (SEM) revealed that an earlier start of growing season (SOS), driven by high spring rainfall (February–March), led to an extended growing season and higher P-Q deficit (precipitation minus runoff) during Leinhuachi's growing season (Goodness of fit index = 0.988, χ² = 0.825, df = 2, p = 0.662). Field-Effect Transistors (FETs) are the key building blocks in a wide range of electronic applications such as sensors and electrical switches. The emergence of Organic Field-Effect Transistors (OFETs) unveiled special features, which have taken the application of FETs into uncharted territories. These unique features include but are not limited to, low- cost processing, lightweight, mechanical flexibility, biocompatibility, broad material availability, etc. Similar to their inorganic counterparts, doping organic semiconductors (OSC) can significantly alter or improve their electrical and optoelectronic properties, resulting in doping induced OFET multi-functionalities. In this study, the impact of multi-doping on the OFET device performance and functionalities has been systematically investigated and evaluated under varying conditions of light, heat, and gate voltages. The experimental results appear to support the proposed hypothesis behind the multi-functionality of the system under study. Chemoresistance in acute myeloid leukemia: An alternative single-cell RNA sequencing approach

Our previous study demonstrated that myc, mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation, mTOR, and stemness are independently responsible for chemoresistance in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cells. This study aimed to identify potential mechanisms of chemoresistance of the "7 + 3" induction in AML by using a single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) approach. In the present study, 13 untreated patients with de novo AML were enrolled and stratified into two groups: complete remission (CR; n = 8) and non-CR (n = 5). Single-cell RNA sequencing was used to analyze genetic profiles of 28,950 AML cells from these patients; results were validated using a previously published bulk RNA-seq dataset. Our study results showed chemoresistant AML cells had premature accumulation during early hematopoiesis. Hematopoietic stem cell-like cells from the non-CR group expressed more leukemic stem cell markers (Cd9, Cd82, IL3RA, and IL1RAP) than those from the CR group. Chemoresistant progenitor cells had impaired myeloid differentiation owing to early arrest of hematopoiesis. Notably, AML cells analyzed by scRNA-seq and bulk RNA-seq harbored a comparable myeloid lineage cell fraction, which internally validated our results. Using the TCGA database, our analysis demonstrated that patients with AML with higher expression of chemoresistant genetic markers (IL3RA and IL1RAP) had a worse overall survival (p < 0.01 for IL3RA; p < 0.05 for IL1RAP). In conclusion, AML cells responsive and resistant to the "7 + 3" induction were derived from a diverse cancerous hematopoietic stem cell population, as indicated by the specific genetic biomarkers obtained using scRNA-seq approach. Furthermore, arrest of hematopoiesis was shown to occur earlier in chemoresistant AML cells, furthering the current understanding of chemoresistance in AML.

This article presents the Joints and Trajectory-pooled 3d-deep Positional Attention-based Bidirectional Recurrent convolutional descriptors (JTPAdBRd) for recognizing the human activities from video sequences. At first, the video is partitioned into clips and these clips are given as input of a two-stream Convolutional 3d (C3d) network in which the attention stream is used for extracting the body joints locations and the feature stream is used for extracting the trajectory points including spatiotemporal features. Then, the extracted features of each clip is needed to aggregate for creating the video descriptor. Therefore, the pooled feature vectors in all the clips within the video sequence are aggregated to a video descriptor. This aggregation is performed by using the PABRNN that concatenates all the pooled feature vectors related to the body joints and trajectory points in a single frame. Thus, the convolutional feature vector representations of all the clips belonging to one video sequence are aggregated to be a descriptor of the video using Recurrent Neural Network (RNN)-based pooling. Besides, these two streams are multiplied with the bilinear product and end-to-end trainable via class labels. Further, the activations of fully connected layers and their spatiotemporal variances are aggregated to create the final video descriptor. Then, these video descriptors are given to the Support Vector Machine (SVM) for recognizing the human behaviors in videos. At last, the experimental outcomes exhibit the considerable improvement in Recognition Accuracy (RA) of the JTdPABRd is approximately 99.4% achieved on the Penn Action dataset as compared to the existing methods.

Background: The efficacy of extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) for treating shoulder calcific tendinitis can be influenced by various prognostic factors. This study aimed to identify prognostic factors associated with the failure of ESWT for symptom relief and to evaluate the predictive capability of the eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) algorithm of artificial intelligence techniques in this context. Methods: This retrospective study enrolled patients with persistent shoulder pain attributed to calcific tendinitis who underwent ESWT after failed conservative treatment between January 1998 and december 2022. Age, sex, duration of symptoms, calcification classification and size, pre-ESWT visual analog scale (VAS), and pre-ESWT Constant-Murley score (CMS) served as potential input attributes. The difference in VAS and CMS were defined as the output attributes. The XGBoost model was used to predict treatment outcomes based on these factors. The dataset was balanced using the synthetic minority oversampling technique, and the model's performance was assessed using 10-fold cross-validation. Spearman's rank correlation coefficient analysis was adopted to explore the relationships between significant continuous input attributes and post-ESWT VAS and CMS scores. Results: A total of 296 patients with calcific tendinitis were enrolled and completed the 1-year follow-up. The findings revealed that a prolonged symptom duration (>10 months), severe pain (pre-ESWT VAS >5), and higher pre-ESWT CMS (>55) were significant prognostic factors for the failure of ESWT for symptom relief. Using these factors as inputs, the XGBoost model demonstrated high accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score. The article proposes a method that allows to solve the complex combinatorial problem of structural optimization of an artificial neural network with a large dimension of the space of optimization parameters using the stochastic mutation function with a constant coefficient of variation. A study on assessment of applicability of this approach to solve the problem is given. This method is proposed to be used for the forecasting of time series values. © 2020 IEEE.
