Arkin et al. [2] recently introduced partitioned pairs network optimization problems: given a metric-weighted graph on n pairs of nodes, the task is to color one node from each pair red and the other blue, and then to compute two separate network structures or disjoint (node-covering) subgraphs of a specified sort, one on the graph induced by the red nodes and the other on the blue nodes. Three structures have been investigated by [2]—spanning trees, traveling salesperson tours, and perfect matchings—and the three objectives to optimize for when computing such pairs of structures: min-sum, min-max, and bottleneck. We provide improved approximation guarantees and/or strengthened hardness results for these nine NP-hard problem settings. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

CUR Low Rank Approximation of a Matrix at Sublinear Cost

Low rank approximation of a matrix (hereafter LRA) is a highly important area of Numerical Linear and Multilinear Algebra and data Mining and Analysis. One can operate with LRA at sublinear cost, that is, by using much fewer memory cells and flops than an input matrix has entries,1 but no sublinear cost algorithm can compute accurate LRA of the worst case input matrices or even of the matrices of small families in our Appendix A. Nevertheless we prove that Cross-Approximation (C-A) celebrated iterations and even more primitive sublinear cost algorithms output quite accurate LRA for a large subclass of the class of all matrices that admit sufficiently close LRA and in a sense for most of such matrices. Moreover, we accentuate the power of sublinear cost LRA by means of multiplicative pre-processing of an input matrix, and also compare C-A iterations with AdI-based variant of Randomized and Sketching LRA algorithms. Benefit for clinical melanoma treatments, the transdermal neoadjuvant therapy could reduce surgery region and increase immunotherapy efficacy. Using lipoplex (Lipo-PEG-PEI-complex, LPPC) encapsulated doxorubicin (dOX) and carrying CpG oligodeoxynucleotide;the transdermally administered nano-liposomal drug complex (LPPC-dOX-CpG) would have high cytotoxicity and immunostimulatory activity to suppress systemic metastasis of melanoma. LPPC-dOX-CpG dramatically suppressed subcutaneous melanoma growth by inducing tumor cell apoptosis and recruiting immune cells into the tumor area. Animal studies further showed that the colonization and growth of spontaneously metastatic melanoma cells in the liver and lung were suppressed by transdermal LPPC-dOX-CpG. Furthermore, NGS analysis revealed IFN-γ and NF-κB pathways were triggered to recruit and activate the antigen-presenting-cells and effecter cells, which could activate the anti-tumor responses as the major mechanism responsible for the therapeutic effect of LPPC-dOX-CpG. Finally, we have successfully proved transdermal LPPC-dOX-CpG as a promising penetrative carrier to activate systemic anti-tumor immunity against subcutaneous and metastatic tumor. © 2022

AdI/ACA-like Superfast Iterative Refinement of Low Rank Approximation of a Matrix

We call a matrix algorithm superfast (aka running at sublinear cost) if it involves much fewer flops and memory cells than an input matrix has entries. Computations with Big data frequently involve matrices of immense size and can be reduced to computations with low rank approximations (LRA) of these matrices, which can be performed superfast. Unfortunately, such LRA algorithms fail for worst case input matrices admitting their LRAs, but Adaptive Cross-Approximation (ACA) method, which can be viewed as LRA version of Alternative directions Implicit (AdI) method, is highly efficient empirically for LRA of a large and important class of input matrices. Adequate formal support for that empirical behavior, however, is still a challenge. This motivated us to propose a novel AdI/ACA-like superfast randomized iterative refinement of a crude LRA. Like ACA iterations we output CUR LRA, which is a particularly memory efficient form of LRA. Unlike AdI/ACA method we use sampling probability to reduce our task to recursive solution of generalized Linear Least Squares Problem (generalized LLSP) and to prove monotone convergence to a close LRA with a high probability (whp) under mild assumptions on an initial LRA. For crude initial LRA lying reasonably far from optimal we have consistently observed significant improvement in two or three iterations in our numerical tests . Copyright © 2019, The Authors. The article proposes a method that allows to solve the complex combinatorial problem of structural optimization of an artificial neural network with a large dimension of the space of optimization parameters using the stochastic mutation function with a constant coefficient of variation. A study on assessment of applicability of this approach to solve the problem is given. This method is proposed to be used for the forecasting of time series values.

BACKGROUNd:We conducted a retrospective observational study to explore the potential application of impulse oscillometry (IOS) as an alternative to high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) for detecting pulmonary involvement in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) because clinically evident interstitial lung disease (ILd) and airway involvement are common in this population. METHOdS:We enrolled 72 patients with RA who underwent pulmonary function tests (PFTs) and IOS between September 2021 and September 2022. We aimed to identify the PFT and IOS variables associated with lung diseases shown on HRCT images. RESULTS:In our cohort of 72 patients, 48 underwent HRCT; of these, 35 had airway disease or ILd and 13 showed no obvious abnormalities on HRCT. Abnormal IOS and PFT parameters were observed in 34 and 23 patients, respectively, with abnormal HRCT images. The predicted percentages for forced vital capacity, the ratio of forced expiratory volume in the first one second to forced vital capacity, and forced mid-expiratory flow value were significantly lower in patients with abnormal HRCT. Lung resistance at 5 Hz, difference in resistance between 5 and 20 Hz, resonant frequency (Fres), and reactance area were higher in these patients and reactance at 5 Hz was lower. Compared to other parameters, Fres > 14.14 was significantly associated with alterations in HRCT and may be used as an indicator for monitoring disease. CONCLUSION:Fres > 14.14 is significantly associated with lung involvement in RA patients. Performance of spirometry with IOS is more beneficial than spirometry alone for evaluating lung involvement in RA patients.

Quercetin, a potent flavonoid recognized for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory attributes, is abundantly found in fruits and vegetables, considerably enhancing their health benefits. Monitoring quercetin concentrations in food matrices is crucial for quality assurance, nutritional assessment, and substantiating health claims. We report a unique zinc-based metal–organic framework (Zn-MOF) incorporated with carbon black (CB) to create a highly sensitive electrochemical sensor specifically designed for quercetin detection. The distinctive porous architecture of the Zn-MOF, together with the superior conductivity of carbon black, have a synergistic effect that improves electron transfer. The sensor reports a wide linear range of 0.05–350.9 μM and a lowest detection limit of 3.7 nM. Furthermore, Zn-MOF@CB/GCE demonstrates excellent current retention (95.64 %) over a period of one month, together with commendable repeatability and reproducibility. The real-sample study of the proposed sensor demonstrates an effective recovery range for fruits: apple (95.0–99.0 %), grapes (96.0–98.0 %), and guava (97.0–101.0 %).

Sebaceous glands play an important role in maintaining the skin barrier function by producing lipids. dysregulated lipid production in these glands may contribute to the pathogenesis of human skin diseases. Galectin-12, a member of the β-galactoside‒binding lectin family, is preferentially expressed in adipocytes, where it regulates adipogenesis and functions as an intrinsic negative regulator of lipolysis. It is also expressed by sebocytes and contributes to the proliferation of this cell type. In this study, we show the association between galectin-12 expression and sebocyte differentiation. Galectin-12 knockdown in a human sebocyte cell line reduced lipogenesis and decreased the production of cholesteryl esters, triglycerides, free fatty acids, and cholesterol. Metabolomic analysis of skin surface lipids showed that the levels of the lipids mentioned earlier decreased in sebaceous gland‒specific galectin-12‒knockout mice compared with that in wild-type mice. In addition, galectin-12 positively regulated peroxisome proliferator‒activated receptor-γ transcriptional activity in sebocytes stimulated with fatty acids. downregulating galectin-12 suppressed the expression of peroxisome proliferator‒activated receptor-γ target genes-acetyl-coenzyme A synthetase 2 gene ACS2 and diacylglycerol O-acyltransferase 1 gene dGAT1-that are required for fatty acid activation and cholesterol and triglyceride biosynthesis. In conclusion, galectin-12 is a positive regulator of sebaceous lipid metabolism with a potential role in the maintenance of skin homeostasis.

The primary aim of this investigation was to assess the occurrence of Toxoplasma gondii infection among sheep and goats in five districts within the southern region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Pakistan. Additionally, the study aimed to pinpoint potential factors associated with the spread of this infection. Serum samples were gathered from a total of 3505 small ruminants, comprising 1810 sheep and 1695 goats. These samples were then subjected to testing for anti-Toxoplasma antibodies using the Toxo-Latex slide Agglutination test. Concurrently, a predetermined questionnaire was employed to gather data on possible risk factors. The collected data underwent bivariate frequency analysis and multivariable logistic regression analyses. The findings revealed that 20.08% of the examined animals had positive results for anti-Toxoplasma antibodies. Notably, the prevalence of T. gondii was notably higher among sheep, with 21.8% of the sheep testing positive, as opposed to the 18% of tested goats (P = 0.007). The seroprevalence percentages were comparable across the five districts for both types of animals. For goats, the prevalence ranged from 16.8% to 20.1%, while for sheep, it ranged from 20.2% to 24%. Among the younger population (≤1 year), the seroprevalence was statistically lower at 17.7% compared to the older population (>1 year) at 23.1% (P < 0.001). Female animals demonstrated a higher prevalence (21.9%) in contrast to their male counterparts (17.8%) (P = 0.002). Animals reared for breeding and milking purposes displayed a greater seroprevalence (23.9%) compared to those intended for sale (17.7%) (P < 0.001). Furthermore, animals kept under a transhumant production system displayed the lowest prevalence (18.9%), followed by sedentary (21.7%) and nomadic (31.2%) herds (P < 0.001). The outcomes of this study highlight the importance of implementing management interventions to curtail T. gondii infection among animals within the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakista
