Translating Social science Skill Sets for Careers Beyond Academia

作者： Laila Sorurbakhsh Laila Sorurbakhsh (sorurbakhsh@gwu.edu) holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Houston (2012) with specializations in Comparative Politics American Politics and Quantitative Methods. Her research focuses on NGOs particularly the integration of risk research innovation and uncertainty in policymaking. Laila is currently an Assistant Professor and Associate Director of the Master of International Policy and Practice program and Director of Online Education at the Elliott School of International Affairs at the George Washington University.

While the academic community has embraced the social sciences as a necessary and valuable discipline, translating skills developed in academia to the broader community continues to be a challenge. The challenge presents itself more as a lack of understanding as to what a social scientist does than a lack of applicable skills. In fact, by the discipline’s very goal of aligning complex problems with scientific methodology, the social scientist gains a wide range of skills that span market demand. These skills include those designed to persuade through effective communication, those designed to question status quo assumptions and lay the foundation for better understanding, and those designed to demonstrate leadership through mentoring, coaching, and teaching. I identify at least eighteen directly translatable skills along these three themes that benefit those who transition from academic to practical environments.

The article deals with the actual problem of identification of probabilistic processes as a result of the operation of drilling rigs in the oil industry. The world experience of finding ways to solve optimal forecasting tools using machine learning is summarized. Mnemonic rule for the implementation of classification and ranking systems in the detection of feedbacks as probable indicators of complications of ongoing technological processes is implemented through the description of the formal model of the drilling process in form of a hidden Markov model. The results of evaluation of the developed mathematical apparatus in the form of predictive analytics and a cut of basic complications in the drilling process are presented. An infological diagram of the developed architectural solution of the analysis project is proposed. The results of the control algorithms formalization are given in conclusion. These results allow to ensure the effective procees modes of equipment operation and make it possible to save electricity and water.

The automation of experiments in life sciences and chemistry has significantly advanced with the development of various instruments and AI technologies. However, achieving full laboratory automation, where experiments conceived by scientists are seamlessly executed in automated laboratories, remains a challenge. We identify the lack of automation in planning and operational tasks—critical human-managed processes collectively termed "care"—as a major barrier. Automating care is the key enabler for full laboratory automation. To address this, we propose the concept of self-maintainability (SeM): the ability of a laboratory system to autonomously adapt to internal and external disturbances, maintaining operational readiness akin to living cells. A SeM-enabled laboratory features autonomous recognition of its state, dynamic resource and information management, and adaptive responses to unexpected conditions. This shifts the planning and execution of experimental workflows, including scheduling and reagent allocation, from humans to the system. We present a conceptual framework for implementing SeM-enabled laboratories, comprising three modules—Requirement manager, Labware manager, and device manager—and a Central manager. SeM not only enables scientists to execute envisioned experiments seamlessly but also provides developers with a design concept that drives the technological innovations needed for full automation. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm for solving the split common fixed point problem for infinite families of demicontractive mappings. Strong convergence of the proposed method is established under suitable control conditions. We apply our main results to study the split common null point problem, the split variational inequality problem, and the split equilibrium problem in the framework of a real Hilbert space. A numerical example supporting our main result is also given. © 2018, The Author(s).

More than half of stroke survivors have post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI). The role of gut microbiota, which can communicate with the brain through the gut-brain axis and affect inflammation, has been receiving increased attention. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the association of PSCI, gut microbiota, and inflammatory markers. Patients with first ischemic stroke and complete 3-month and 1-year follow-up data were included and divided into PSCI and non-PSCI groups according to the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) score at the above time points. PSCI was defined as having a MoCA less than 23 at either 3 months or 1 year, or a decrease of more than 2 points at both time points. Gut microbiota was assessed by 16 S rRNA gene sequencing and Next Generation Sequencing analysis. The inflammatory markers included interleukins (ILs), eotaxin, G-CSF, TNF-α, IFNγ, sCd40L, and MCP-1. There were 95 ischemic stroke patients (mean age, 60.5 ± 12.1 years;male, 68.4%), including 30 with PSCI and 65 with non-PSCI. In gut microbiota analysis, the PSCI group had a higher abundance of Bacteroidaceae and Clostridiaceae, and the non-PSCI group had a higher abundance of Prevotellaceae, Ruminococcaceae, Oscillibacter, and Faecalibacterium. Ruminococcaceae family under the Oscillospirales order remains significantly different in the two groups in logistic regression model adjusting confounding variables (p = 0.044). In an analysis of inflammatory markers, the plasma levels of eotaxin (p = 0.041) and IL-12p40 (p = 0.031) were significantly higher in the PSCI group than those in the non-PSCI group, and the plasma level of eotaxin was significantly positively correlated with the amount of Clostridiaceae (rho = 0.389, p = 0.045). The study found that PSCI was associated with certain gut microbiota, and these gut microbiotas correlated with the pro-inflammatory marker eotaxin. This suggests that gut microbiota might play a role in the development of cognitive impairment

The Big data, Block chain and the Internet of Things (IoT) are the key names in the technology development of these eras. There are undoubtedly differences between the three technologies, but there are also firm relationships that increase the system operations, practicability, and adoptability. As the domain Block chain and the Internet of Things (IoT) are just infant domain and, still it's undergoing more and further development events, and the Internet of Things(IoT) is producing a larger set of the data and adopted across the different industries such as healthcare, smart cities development, retail, banking and public administration and real time application forecasting, the well-analyzed data is tremendously valuable the Big data Analytics will suffice this needs, and on the other side the Block chain will provide more secured transaction of the data, and it provides contracts, and more other applications plus integration and Big data Analytics can be integrated on top of it. In this paper will focus on the incorporation of the all three technologies or domain, such as Big data Analytics, Block chain and the Internet of Things (IoT). We concluded that all the three technology Big data Analytics, Block chain and the Internet of Things (IoT) would play a vital role in resolving each other constraints. Based on our analysis and case studies it will help for future work research.

Air pollution has been linked to respiratory diseases, and urban air pollution can be attributed to a number of emission sources. The emitted particles and gases are the primary components of air pollution that enter the lungs during respiration. Particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of ≤ 2.5 µm (PM) can deposit deep into the respiratory tract via inhalation and has been proposed as a causative agent for adverse respiratory health. In addition, the lung contains a diverse microbial community (microbiome) that maintains normal homeostasis and is significantly altered in a variety of pulmonary disorders. Air pollution, specifically PM, has previously been shown to significantly alter the composition of the lower airway microbiome, which has been linked to decreased lung function in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPd) patients. Surprisingly, the intestinal microbiome has also been implicated in the modulation of pulmonary inflammatory diseases. Therefore, dysbiosis of the lung and intestinal microbiomes pose significant negative effects on human health. This dataset describes the microbial community profiles of the lungs and intestines of ageing rats exposed to ambient unconcentrated traffic-related air pollution for three months. The whole-body exposure system was equipped with and without high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filtration (gaseous vs. PM pollution). The data can provide valuable information on lung and intestinal microbiome changes, including that which was only found after traffic-related air pollution exposure.

Natto contains a potent fibrinolytic enzyme called nattokinase (NK), which has thrombolytic, antihypertensive, antiatherosclerotic and lipid-lowering effects. Although NK has been recognized for its beneficial effect on humans with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVd), the underlying mechanisms involved in vascular inflammation-atherosclerosis development remain largely unknown. The current study aimed to explore the effects of NK on gene regulation, autophagy, necroptosis and inflammasome in vascular inflammation. The transcriptional profiles of NK in endothelial cells (ECs) by RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) revealed that NK affected THBS1, SRF and SREBF1 mRNA expression. In Q-PCR analysis, SRF and THBS1 were upregulated but SREBF1 was unaffected in ECs treated with NK. NK treatment induced autophagy and inhibited NLRP3 inflammasome and necroptosis in ECs. Furthermore, the inhibition of SRF or THBS1 by siRNA suppressed autophagy and enhanced the NLRP3 inflammasome and necroptosis. In a mouse model, NK reduced vascular inflammation by activating autophagy and inhibiting NLRP3 inflammasome and necroptosis. Our findings provide the first evidence that NK upregulates SRF and THBS1 genes, subsequently increasing autophagy and decreasing necroptosis and NLRP3 inflammasome formation to reduce vascular inflammation. Therefore, NK could serve as nutraceuticals or adjuvant therapies to reduce vascular inflammation and possible atherosclerosis progression. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.
