Background: In post-stroke rehabilitation, functional connectivity (FC), motor-related cortical potential (MRCP), and gait activities are common measures related to recovery outcomes. However, the interrelationship between FC, MRCP, gait activities, and bipedal distinguishability have yet to be investigated. Methods: Ten participants were equipped with EEG devices and inertial measurement units (IMUs) while performing lower limb motor preparation (MP) and motor execution (ME) tasks. MRCP, FCs, and bipedal distinguishability were extracted from the EEG signals, while the change in knee degree during the ME phase was calculated from the gait data. FCs were analyzed with pairwise Pearson’s correlation, and the brain-wide FC was fed into support vector machine (SVM) for bipedal classification. Results: Parietal–frontocentral connectivity (PFCC) dysconnection and MRCP desynchronization were related to the MP and ME phases, respectively. Hemiplegic limb movement exhibited higher PFCC strength than nonhemiplegic limb movement. Bipedal classification had a short-lived peak of 75.1% in the pre-movement phase. These results contribute to a better understanding of the neurophysiological functions during motor tasks, with respect to localized MRCP and nonlocalized FC activities. The difference in PFCCs between both limbs could be a marker to understand the motor function of the brain of post-stroke patients. Conclusions: In this study, we discovered that PFCCs are temporally dependent on lower limb gait movement and MRCP. The PFCCs are also related to the lower limb motor performance of post-stroke patients. The detection of motor intentions allows the development of bipedal brain-controlled exoskeletons for lower limb active rehabilitation. © The Author(s) 2024.

BACKGROUNd:The association between human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER2) amplification and brain metastasis (BM) in patients having colorectal cancer (CRC) has been suggested but not yet established. This study investigated the expression patterns of HER2, its association with BM, and its prognostic value in patients having CRC. METHOdS:We retrospectively identified 99 patients having metastatic CRC (mCRC) and BM (the BM cohort) and compared them with a cohort of 249 patients having mCRC and without BM (the stage IV cohort) by propensity score matching. Immunohistochemical studies of HER2 on all available paraffin-embedded tumour samples, either from the primary tumour, the metastasis (brain and/or extracranial sites) or both, were performed and analysed. HER2 fluorescent in situ hybridisation was applied when necessary. The expression of HER2 was compared and correlated with survival. RESULTS:HER2 amplifications were detected in 16 (18.4%) of 87 and 9 (3.6%) of 249 patients who had specimens available in the BM and stage IV cohorts, respectively (P < .001). After propensity score matching, HER2 amplification was significantly associated with BM (odds ratio: 5.38, P = .003). HER2 heterogeneity was frequently observed not only at the single tumour level but also in paired tumour samples. A marginally significant longer survival since BM was found in patients having HER2-amplified mCRC than in those without (P = .07). CONCLUSIONS:HER2 amplification was significantly associated with BM in patients having mCRC and might have prognostic value for survival since BM. Given the heterogeneity of HER2 expression, the testing of HER2 status on available tissues from both primary and metastatic tumours should be encouraged.

This paper proposed a contact-force-controlled surface profiler by integrating the output of a LVT (Linear Velocity Transducer) in the inner-loop (to increase the damping) of the control system, so that not only the noise amplification effect due to the differentiator in the PId circuit, but the hysteresis effect of the force actuator could be avoided. A voice coil was applied as a force actuator, and a LVdT (Linear Variable differential Transformer) was applied at outer-loop to measure the surface profile. The maximum contact force between the probe and the sample was sensed by a load cell and limited to a tolerable value by the system, so the sample surface would not be destroyed by the probe. Four kinds of controllers using traditional PId, Ziegler-Nichols-based PId, fuzzy-PId, and neural-fuzzy design methods were applied for comparison. Besides, practical parameter variation (hysteresis effect) of force actuator was considered. Moreover, to investigate the system performance the testing input of the surface profile was generated by combining both FM (with frequency changing from 20 HZ to 20 KHZ according to the specification of voice coil) and AM signals. This kind of surface profile was very practical and not being found in the previous literature. By the results of simulations and practical testing, one can see the intelligent fuzzy-neural system was more robust to the parameter variation of force actuator.

A new fiber anemometer based on fiber gratings is experimentally demonstrated for simultaneously detecting the wind-speed and -direction. The two gratings separated with 90° are fixed on the stainless steel pipe driven by the rotating disc for measuring the wind direction. The overlapped frequency of the sensing grating wavelength overlapped with that of the matched fiber grating is utilized for monitoring the wind speed. This fiber anemometer with a simple and durable structure can be applied in anemo-electric generators.

Autonomous systems are able to make decisions and potentially take actions without direct human intervention, which requires some knowledge about the system and its environment as well as goal-oriented reasoning. In computer systems, one can derive such behavior from the concept of a rational agent with autonomy (“control over its own actions”), reactivity (“react to events from the environment”), proactivity (“act on its own initiative”), and sociality (“interact with other agents”) as fundamental properties \n[1]\n. Autonomous systems will undoubtedly pervade into our everyday lives, and we will find them in a variety of domains and applications including robotics, transportation, health care, communications, and entertainment to name a few. \nThe articles in this month’s special issue cover concepts and fundamentals, architectures and techniques, and applications and case studies in the exciting area of self-awareness in autonomous systems.

Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) is a current prevalent technique for surgical operations. Compared with traditional surgical methods, MIS can reduce the post-surgical recovery time, as well as the costs and pain patients endure as a result of surgery. It is therefore of interest to both doctors and patients. The major problem of MIS is there being a narrow field of vision. We have developed and validated a MIS Panoramic Endoscope (MISPE) [4] to provide doctors with broad fields of view. MISPE features a combination of image overlapping and image stitching. The panoramic image apparatus has two side-by-side endoscopic lenses that provide wide-angle inputs for image stitching. MISPE can provide doctors with panoramic images, so that doctors can easily discriminate the organ's positions between surgical operations. The two issues of concern of MISPE are the quality and speed of image stitching. However, the image stitching results of MISPE cannot be obtained by using the conventional SIFT[1], SURF[2], or ORB[3] algorithms. Therefore, this paper proposes few novel techniques to improve the image stitching performance of MISPE. Experimental results show that MISPE can enhance the image size by up to 150%. We also obtained 2X performance improvement in comparison with the conventional techniques. © 2016 IEEE.
