Occupational health and safety management systems that can be audited sustainably have been started to be required both in our country and in the world, due to work accidents in recent years. The goal of these management systems are to ensure occupational health and safety activities more simple, understandable and easy to implement in the workplace, to help establish a more effective prevention system and to ensure effective participation of all employees regardless of level difference in the operating system to safety system. As a result of these, work accidents and occupational diseases can be reduced, scientific occupational health and safety studies can be continued and an environment that will help to increase the countries’ development levels. The aim of this study is to show the benefits of occupational health and safety management systems that can provide to employees, enterprises and whole countries and to offer an occupational health and safety management system for Turkey by examining the examples of occupational health and safety management systems of different countries. For this aim, a detailed literature survey is performed and acquired results are evaluated comprehensively.

Air pollution has been linked to respiratory diseases, and urban air pollution can be attributed to a number of emission sources. The emitted particles and gases are the primary components of air pollution that enter the lungs during respiration. Particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of ≤ 2.5 µm (PM) can deposit deep into the respiratory tract via inhalation and has been proposed as a causative agent for adverse respiratory health. In addition, the lung contains a diverse microbial community (microbiome) that maintains normal homeostasis and is significantly altered in a variety of pulmonary disorders. Air pollution, specifically PM, has previously been shown to significantly alter the composition of the lower airway microbiome, which has been linked to decreased lung function in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPd) patients. Surprisingly, the intestinal microbiome has also been implicated in the modulation of pulmonary inflammatory diseases. Therefore, dysbiosis of the lung and intestinal microbiomes pose significant negative effects on human health. This dataset describes the microbial community profiles of the lungs and intestines of ageing rats exposed to ambient unconcentrated traffic-related air pollution for three months. The whole-body exposure system was equipped with and without high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filtration (gaseous vs. PM pollution). The data can provide valuable information on lung and intestinal microbiome changes, including that which was only found after traffic-related air pollution exposure.

BACKGROUNd:The association between human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER2) amplification and brain metastasis (BM) in patients having colorectal cancer (CRC) has been suggested but not yet established. This study investigated the expression patterns of HER2, its association with BM, and its prognostic value in patients having CRC. METHOdS:We retrospectively identified 99 patients having metastatic CRC (mCRC) and BM (the BM cohort) and compared them with a cohort of 249 patients having mCRC and without BM (the stage IV cohort) by propensity score matching. Immunohistochemical studies of HER2 on all available paraffin-embedded tumour samples, either from the primary tumour, the metastasis (brain and/or extracranial sites) or both, were performed and analysed. HER2 fluorescent in situ hybridisation was applied when necessary. The expression of HER2 was compared and correlated with survival. RESULTS:HER2 amplifications were detected in 16 (18.4%) of 87 and 9 (3.6%) of 249 patients who had specimens available in the BM and stage IV cohorts, respectively (P < .001). After propensity score matching, HER2 amplification was significantly associated with BM (odds ratio: 5.38, P = .003). HER2 heterogeneity was frequently observed not only at the single tumour level but also in paired tumour samples. A marginally significant longer survival since BM was found in patients having HER2-amplified mCRC than in those without (P = .07). CONCLUSIONS:HER2 amplification was significantly associated with BM in patients having mCRC and might have prognostic value for survival since BM. Given the heterogeneity of HER2 expression, the testing of HER2 status on available tissues from both primary and metastatic tumours should be encouraged.

Smoking is the most important risk factor for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPd), however evidence from large-scale studies on whether secondhand smoke (SHS) increases the risk of COPd is still lacking. We conducted this large longitudinal study to investigate the association between SHS and the development of COPd. This is a longitudinal study. data on 6519 subjects who were never-smokers, had no history of COPd, and had complete lung function records were extracted from the Taiwan Biobank. They were divided into two groups according to SHS exposure: no exposure and exposure groups. data were collected when participants enrolled in the study and during regular follow-up. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to estimate the relative risk (RR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for the association between SHS and the risk of developing COPd. At 48 months of follow-up, 260 (4%) participants in the no exposure group and 34 (7%) participants in the exposure group developed COPd. The RR of incident COPd development was significantly higher in the exposure group than that in the no exposure group after adjusting for confounders (RR = 1.49;95% CI 1.04 to 2.14;P value = 0.031). There is a dose–response relationship between the duration of exposure to SHS and the risk of incident COPd, which demonstrates that an additional hour of exposure to SHS per week was associated with a 1.03-fold increased likelihood of developing COPd after adjusting for confounders (RR = 1.03;95% CI 1.00 to 1.05;P value = 0.027). SHS exposure contributes to the development of COPd. This finding can help raise awareness of the harms of SHS and provide a reference for formulating anti-smoking policies. © The Author(s) 2024.

COVId-19 pandemic is predominantly caused by SARS-CoV-2, with its main protease, Mpro, playing a pivotal role in viral replication and serving as a potential target for inhibiting different variants. In this study, potent Mpro inhibitors were identified from glycyrrhizic acid (GL) derivatives with amino acid methyl/ethyl esters. Out of the 17 derivatives semisynthesized, Compounds 2, 6, 9, and 15, with methionine methyl esters, d-tyrosine methyl esters, glutamic acid methyl esters, and methionines in the carbohydrate moiety, respectively, significantly inhibited wild-type SARS-CoV-2 Mpro-mediated proteolysis, with IC50 values ranging from 0.06 μM to 0.84 μM. They also demonstrated efficacy in inhibiting trans-cleavage by mutant Mpro variants (Mpro_P132H, Mpro_E166V, Mpro_P168A, Mpro_Q189I), with IC50 values ranging from 0.05 to 0.92 μM, surpassing nirmatrelvir (IC50: 1.17-152.9 μM). Molecular modeling revealed stronger interactions with Valine166 in the structural complex of Mpro_E166V with the compounds compared to nirmatrelvir. Moreover, these compounds efficiently inhibited the post-entry viral processes of wild-type SARS-CoV-2 single-round infectious particles (SRIPs), mitigating viral cytopathic effects and reducing replicon-driven GFP reporter signals, as well as in vitro infectivity of wild-type, Mpro_E166V, and Mpro_Q189I SRIPs, with EC50 values ranging from 0.02 to 0.53 μM. However, nirmatrelvir showed a significant decrease in inhibiting the replication of mutant SARS-CoV-2 SRIPs carrying Mpro_E166V (EC50: >20 μM) and Mpro_Q189I (EC50: 13.2 μM) compared to wild-type SRIPs (EC50: 0.06 μM). Overall, this study identifies four GL derivatives as promising lead compounds for developing treatments against various SARS-CoV-2 strains, including Omicron, and nirmatrelvir-resistant variants.

Many high-performance computing applications are using MPI (Message Passing Interface) for communication. The performance of MPI library affects the performance of MPI applications. Various techniques like communication latency reduction, increasing bandwidth, and increasing scalability are available for improving the performance of message passing. In multi-core cluster environment, the communication latency can be further reduced by topology-aware process placement. This technique involves three steps: finding communication pattern of MPI application (application topology), finding architecture details of underlying multi-core cluster (system topology), and mapping processes to cores. In this paper, we have proposed novel "ClustMap" algorithm for the third step. By using this algorithm, both system and application topologies are mapped. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms over existing process placement techniques. © 2018, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Numerical study of minute vortex generator jets in a turbulent boundary layer

The air-jet vortex generator has been proposed as a credible alternative to the more conventional vane vortex generator. Some numerical models of the flow in the neighborhood of these devices have been constricted to evaluate their potential benefits. The objective of this paper is to consider the effects of a single minute AJVG in a turbulent boundary layer on a flat plane and study the longitudinal vortex caused by merging two-minute co-rotating vortex in turbulent boundary layer. The flows were assumed fully turbulent and were solved using the finite volume, OpenFoam 5.0 on a structures grid, using SST k-ω turbulence model and standard wall functions. Predicted results were also validated with experimental data. A reasonably good match was served between the predicted and experimental Reynolds stress data. However, in compare of experimental data the longitudinal vortices were not remain along the stream and were disappeared early.

Colistin is a last-resort antibiotic used to treat infections caused by drug-resistant gram-negative bacteria. However, the genetic mechanisms underlying colistin resistance in Shewanella algae are not well understood. In this study, we sequenced and compared the genomes of 23 mcr-negative colistin-resistant and sensitive S. algae samples from various sources. We applied a computational approach to identify combinatorial mutations associated with colistin resistance. Our analysis revealed a combination of three mutations (PmrB 451, PmrE168, PmrH292) that were strongly associated with colistin resistance in S. algae. This study provides insights into the genetic mechanisms of colistin resistance in S. algae and demonstrates the utility of a computational approach for identifying epistatic interactions among mutations. Identifying the genetic mutations responsible for colistin resistance in S. algae can inform the development of new treatments or strategies to combat infections caused by this emerging pathogen. © 2023 Institut Pasteur

5G (fifth generation) technology is used to interconnect all terminals, networks, multiple wireless technologies, applications simultaneously which can also switch between them based on VOIP (Voice-over-IP), flat IP, and Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6), thus user experiences call volume services and high-level data transmission. 5G network is reliable and very fast with minimum delay, higher data rate, greater security, real-time data handling, less error rate, and few data losses. The core technologies used in 5G networks include cloud computing, Heterogeneous Network (Het Net), internet of things (IoT), Cognitive Radio (CR) network, software-defined networking (SdN), Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO), and massive MIMO. 5G produces different harmful effects such as human health issues, environmental issues, health issues on birds and animals, thermal effects, etc. Regulating agencies have to set a Specific Absorption Rate (SAR), its maximum levels for handsets, and every mobile phone must have a SAR rating. 5G technology is used as intelligent technology in which 5G mobile phones can also be used as a tablet PC. This paper presents a general review on 5G along with its comparison with 4G, the general architecture of 5G, a detailed explanation about core technologies of 5G, and also harmful effects on different issues using 5G.
