An initiative on the safety and management of food flavorings in Taiwan

Food flavorings are preparations widely used for food processing and home cooking to enhance the smell and taste of food. Because of increasing demand for consumer protection, the general population has recently paid much greater attention to the safety of food flavors. Legislation controlling the use of food flavors vary among countries. The US Flavor and Extract Manufacturers Association (FEMA) has evaluated and approved near 3, 000 substances as FEMA GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) flavors. In Taiwan, there are only 90 items of food flavorings complying with the safety rules of the US FEMA, and Taiwan FdA has officially approved these substances for use as food flavors. Currently, many of flavors used in food businesses and industries, and home cooks remain unevaluated and not fully regulated in Taiwan. Information on daily intakes or exposures to these flavorings are yet unavailable for a risk assessment. In line with the international standards, the Ministry of Health and Welfare has started to propose an updated additive list with a greater variety of flavors. To better consolidate the safety of food flavoring use in Taiwan, it is imperative in the future to update the items of food flavorings for control and to establish the safety criteria by conducting a risk assessment for all flavoring substances.

The particular solutions(PS) and fundamental solutions(FS) in polar coordinates can be found in many textbooks, but with much less coverage in elliptic coordinates [1]. Since the elliptic domains with elliptic holes may be found in some engineering problems, the PS and the FS expansions in elliptic coordinates are essential for numerical computations. For dirichlet problems of Laplace's equation in elliptic domains, the null field method(NFM), the interior field method(IFM) and the collocation Trefftz method(CTM) are reported in [2]. There seems to exist very few reports for mixed problems, where the dirichlet and Neumann conditions are assigned on the exterior and the interior boundaries, simultaneously. This paper is devoted to such mixed problems by the NFM and the IFM, and the explicit algebraic equations are derived for elliptic domains. Besides, other effective particular solutions(PS) are sought, and the collocation Trefftz method(CTM) [3] is employed. The CTM may be used for Robin problems in elliptic domains. The effective algorithms for the mixed problems of Laplace's equation on elliptic domains are the main goal of this paper.

Patients with concussions, strokes and neuromuscular disease such as Parkinson's disease, often have difficulties in keeping balance and suffer from abnormal gaits. Gait assessment conducted by a physician or therapist in clinics is standard clinical practice for assessing such injuries. However, this approach is subjective, leading to potential problems of unrepeatability, poor sensitivity and unreliability. To conduct the assessment in an objective way, a computer-based gait assessment system is designed and presented in this paper. The system performs assessments on dynamic balance and gaits by analyzing the skeleton frames of a subject captured by the Microsoft Kinect RGB-d sensor. Results show that the proposed system effectively scores subjects.

Since the end of dennard scaling in the early 2000s, improving the energy efficiency of computation has been the main concern of the research community and industry. The large energy efficiency gap between general-purpose processors and application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) motivates the exploration of customizable architectures, where one can adapt the architecture to the workload. In this Synthesis lecture, we present an overview and introduction of the recent developments on energy-efficient customizable architectures, including customizable cores and accelerators, on-chip memory customization, and interconnect optimization. In addition to a discussion of the general techniques and classification of different approaches used in each area, we also highlight and illustrate some of the most successful design examples in each category and discuss their impact on performance and energy efficiency. We hope that this work captures the state-of-the-art research and development on customizable architectures and serves as a useful reference basis for further research, design, and implementation for large-scale deployment in future computing systems.

EdITOR'S SUMMARY ASIS&T Special Interest Group/Scientific and Technical Information convened a panel at the ASIS&T 2014 Annual Meeting that explored potential impacts of 3d design and printing on libraries, museums and educational institutions. Rooted in the 1970s, the current 3d printing process was first used in 1984 and now allows limitless creations to be made by downloading or scanning and printing a digital file. The tangible product vitalizes interaction with the original and among viewers, enhances understanding and stimulates creativity. But, as with the use of photocopiers, questions of ethics and intellectual property arise. Management of the technology also raises practical questions of access, workflow, budgeting and support. This special section delves into 3d technologies as teaching tools and considers policy, copyright and intellectual freedom, critical issues for information professionals. Articles open with a discussion of the use of 3d printers in library makerspaces by community members, the potential for broad experiential learning and practical issues for libraries. An exploration of 3d printer use for academic studies far beyond traditional areas follows, with a look at collaborative efforts between university departments to support and use the equipment and a reminder of the need for ethical management and consumer education about 3d resources. The final articles explore the benefits of manipulating 3d copies of museum pieces and enjoying the creative potential for hands-on activities in various settings, as well as contemplating libraries' role in adapting intellectual freedom policy for 3d technologies.

This study aims to establish equations for energy consumptions of Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) trains in operation considering the variations of slope to determine the traction energy cost (TEC). Where railway transportation has been one of the important means of transport for mankind, since TRA became electrified the parameters for train operations have been able to be accurately recorded. The equations for overall energy consumption and resistance parameters are completed for the overall energy consumption of TRA trains and resistance to them to simulate the operation of the whole train model. The inputs of different conditions of trains and track sections are then analyzed for energy use, as the energy use by train travel is obvious. That by the behavior of energy use, can be divided in three conditions for analysis which is acceleration, coasting and deceleration. In the analysis of the energy in the journey, the variation of its consumption is subject to multiple factors because of the difference in operation model and the variation in the track slope data. In view of decreasing unnecessary energy consumption, the equations for train energy consumption and the track parameters are substituted in the teaching-learning-based optimization (TLBO) technique, which can compute the optimal results fast. The optimal results being incorporated in the trains can help reduce unnecessary energy consumption and errors by human operations and arrive at the destination on schedule. By the equations for energy consumption, train parameters, and TLBO, our study proved to be able to reduce energy use as well as ensure of Top Transport Time Expenditure (TTE) of the trains.

Kevlar fiber are artifical fibers that have been globally commonly used due to their attributes of a high modulus, a low elongation, an impact resistance, a chemical resistance, and thermostability. Therefore, this study proposes nonwoven geotextiles by corporating with recycled Kevlar unidirectoinal selvage with a low production cost, crimped polyester(PET) fibers, and low-melting-point PET(LPET) fibers. The content of LPET fiber is specified as 20 wt%, while the content of Kevlar fiber varies as 0 wt%, 5 wt%, 10 wt%, 15 wt%, and 20 wt%. The optimal tear strength of 195 N occurs with a content of Kevlar fiber being 20 wt%.

The epoxy composites with high thermal conductivity for metal-core printed circuit board(MCPCB) can be prepared by varnish coating and a hot press method. Alumina filler of plate-like shape was used as primary micro-filler, while plate-like alumina filler, h-BN, a-BN and s-BN filler were used for blending into the plate-like alumina filler as the secondary filler. Results showed that the secondary fillers a-BN and s-BN loaded epoxy composites have higher thermal conductivity than alumina filler single-loaded composites. Also, BN filler has high thermal conductivity, but h-BN filled epoxy composite has lower thermal conductivity than alumina filled epoxy composite. The decrease of voids in epoxy composite are very important, and the filler shape and surface modification is also necessary to achieve high thermal conductivity in epoxy composite for MCPCB
