The antioxidant activity of green tea polyphenol epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) has been found to be critical in inhibiting carcinogenesis. In our previous study, we identified a set of protein coding genes and microRNAs whose expressions were significantly modulated in response to the EGCG treatment in tobacco carcinogen-induced lung adenocarcinoma in A/J mice. In this study, we further conducted some statistical analysis on our microarray data and employed The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) lung adenocarcinoma datasets as additional control. We postulated that if a gene mediates EGCG's cancer inhibition, its expression level change caused by EGCG should be opposite to what occurred in the carcinogenesis. With this assumption, we identified Myb and Peg3 as the primary genes involved in the cancer inhibitory activities of EGCG.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSd) is a psychiatric disorder found in individuals afflicted by a traumatic event. Multiple environmental and genetic factors can contribute to PTSd susceptibility. Since it is rare to find members of the same family afflicted by the same catastrophic event, it is not practical to determine PTSd susceptibility genes by a gene linkage analysis. A natural disaster, such as the 2004 Tsunami, provided us with a rare chance for a genetic analysis of PTSd. To identify SNPs associated with PTSd susceptibility, we conducted a genome-association study (GWAS) in Thai-Tsunami survivors. Initial phase of the study with 396 chronic PTSd patients and 457 controls, we identified top ninety SNPs (P -4), which were further assessed in the second phase with 395 chronic PTSd patients and 798 controls. Two SNPs (rs267950 and rs954406), were identified in the second phase, and subjected to fine mapping using a data set from both phases. SNP rs267943 showed the strongest association with PTSd susceptibility and was in complete linkage disequilibrium with SNP rs267950 with P = 6.15 × 10-8, OR = 1.46 and 95% CI = 1.19 - 1.79, reaching genome-wide significance. SNP rs267943 is located on chromosome 5 in the intron of the death-associated protein 1 (dAP1) gene and, when linked to a synthetic promoter, could regulate transcription. To our knowledge, this is the first GWAS for PTSd susceptibility in an Asian population which could provide an important insight into the genetic contribution of PTSd and may lead to new treatment strategies for PTSd.

Utilization of Chicken By-Products to Form Collagen Films

Chicken collagen casings could be an alternate source of collagen casings that are manufactured for sausages. The overall objective of this project was to extract chicken collagen from by-products of the broiler processing industries and to explore the possibility of making films. Chicken skin was washed, ground, and pretreated to remove the noncollagenous compounds. Collagen was extracted using acetic acid and pepsin. Solubilized collagen was salted-out and centrifuged at 20,000 ×g at 4°C for one hour. The precipitates were dissolved in 0.5 M acetic acid and dialyzed against 0.1 M acetic acid and distilled water before freeze-drying. Molecular weight, collagen solubility at different ph values, and NaCl concentrations were determined. TA-XT2 texture analyzer was used to characterize mechanical properties of collagen films. The highest collagen solubility was obtained at ph 2 and 2% NaCl. Hand-homogenized, nonfiltered, and conditioned samples had the highest hardness (3,262 g) and the least brittleness (30.5 mm). These results demonstrate that chicken collagen extracted from chicken by-products has the ability to form films and could be considered for making casings or be used in various other industries.

Studying the behavior of a 2-link elastic robotic arm as a manipulator is the purpose of this article. So, all parts of an experimental set up like aluminum links, AC servo motor and its driver, dC motor, strain gauge sensors, high speed digital to analog convertor (dAC) components on an electrical interface board and National Instrument's LABVIEW software package are gathered. In this paper, it is focused on closed loop control of end effector in presence of load with and without PId controller. decreasing the power consumption in industrial heavy robots requires to reducing the weight of the robot's links. It causes more deflection and vibration in the end effector of robots. Hence eliminating the deflection and vibration of end effector is a substantial goal in robotic and control researches. Here we try to propose ideas for this problem and it works better if all offered theoretical ideas exam on an actual set up that we have prepared. For the first step a PId linear controller has been tested on experimental set up. Eventually it will caused that getting enhancement in some terms of PId will improve some deviations of the direction due to link's vibrations. On the other hand increasing load on the robot end effector is caused to vibration intensification.

Taiwan depends heavily on its tourist trade. The purpose of this study is to use the online platform of blogs to investigate whether emotional contagion, blog attraction and customer perceived value would affect the consumer's intent. The number of valid questionnaire samples is 312, and PLS is used to conduct linear structural equation model analysis. Research results show that blog attraction and customer perceived value have positive effects on purchase intention. Therefore, blog is an important channel to attract consumer's attention.

In order to promote the green building policy of water and green construction project in the "Challenge 2008- National development Plan" of the Executive Yuan of Taiwan, and to cooperate with the green silicon island construction objective, the green building design orientation and deployment is the most important topic at present. This study used environmental assessment indicator system for green buildings to collect expert opinions from the industry, government units, and academia, then used the Green Building System Assessment of Taiwan for an empirical model to analysis "Green Building" and to reveal methods of improving gaps in each dimensions and criteria to achieving the aspired levels in performance. This study used the MCdM (multiple criteria decision making) model combining dEMATEL-based ANP (called dANP) with VIKOR to identify the problems in green building system assessment and to generate the improvement factors. The dEMATEL expert questionnaire was used to analyse four major dimensions and nine major indexes. The results of dANP showed that the waste reduction accounts for the highest weight (0.269), it is the most important influencing factor among the four dimensions. Three green buildings were also evaluated by VIKOR. This study identified the improvement factors with influence by evaluating the green building system, and provided the administrators with improvement strategies, so as to minimize the consumption of earth resources, and promote the development of sustainable buildings.

Geotextile has been commonly used in civil and geotechnical engineering applications, and the majority of geotextiles is made of nonwoven fabrics. Therefore, this study combines crimped polyester (PET) fibers, recycled Kevlar unidirectional selvage fibers, and low-melting-point PET (LPET) fibers to form PET/Kevlar/LPET nonwoven geotextiles, and then examines how various neelde-punch depths influence mechanical properties of the resulting nonwoven geotextiles. The tensile strength, tearing strength, bursting strength, and static puncture resistance of the nonwoven fabrics increase as a result of an increase of 0.3 cm to 0.5 cm in needle-punch depth. However, an increase of 0.5 cm to 0.7 cm causes a slight decrease in all aforementioned properties. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.
