Geotextiles feature reinforcement, drainage, filtration, separation, and act as a moisture barrier, and are commonly used in civil and geotechnical engineering applications. Using nonwoven fabrics as geotextiles has become a recent trend;therefore, this study combines crimped polyester (PET) fibers, recycled Kevlar unidirectional selvage fibers, and low-melting-point PET (LPET) fiber to make PET/Kevlar/LPET nonwoven geotextiles, the mechanical properties of which are then examined. The test results show that the tensile strength and tearing strength of the PET/Kevlar/LPET nonwoven geotextiles increases as a result of an increasing needle-punch rate from 150 punches/min to 200 punches/min. The mechanical properties along the cross machine direciton (Cd) of the nonwoven geotextiles is greater than that along the machine direction (Md). When the needle-punching rate exceeds 200 punches/min, the mechanical properties of the nonwoven geotextiles slightly decrease.

This chapter integrated an active RFId tag with a thermal convection angular accelerometer on a flexible substrate. The first new idea was to make the device directly on a flexible substrate without any movable parts, so it is very easy to make and reliable. The second idea used the flexible substrate such as polyimide, since its thermal conductivity is much lower than silicon, and thus, it can save more power. The third new idea and the most powerful one is that the angular accelerometer is integrated with an active RFId tag on the same flexible substrate;thus, the device becomes a more useful wireless angular acceleration sensor. By using the traditional square chamber filled with carbon dioxide, the device sensitivity is 18.8 C/(rad/s2) and the response time is 158 μs. © 2013 Springer science+Business Media New York.

This chapter proposes a MIMO fuel cell design by integrating both Ziegler-Nichols-based PId and intelligent fuzzy-neural controllers. Comparing with the other PId methods by Matlab simulation, the proposed system performances are better and robust by using scaled conjugate gradient algorithm to determine the neural network weighting factors and biases;even the system has stack current disturbance variation and gas valve hysteresis effects. © 2013 Springer science+Business Media New York.

To evaluate associations by EGFR mutation status for lung adenocarcinoma risk among never-smoking Asian women, we conducted a meta-analysis of 11 loci previously identified in genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Genotyping in an additional 10,780 never-smoking cases and 10,938 never-smoking controls from Asia confirmed associations with eight known single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Two new signals were observed at genome-wide significance (P < 5 × 10-8), namely, rs7216064 (17q24.3, BPTF), for overall lung adenocarcinoma risk, and rs3817963 (6p21.3, BTNL2) which is specific to cases with EGFR mutations. In further sub-analyses by EGFR status, rs9387478 (ROS1/dCBLd1) and rs2179920 (HLA-dPB1) showed stronger estimated associations in EGFR-positive compared to EGFR-negative cases. Comparison of the overall associations with published results in Western populations revealed that the majority of these findings were distinct, underscoring the importance of distinct contributing factors for smoking and non-smoking lung cancer. Our results extend the catalogue of regions associated with lung adenocarcinoma in non-smoking Asian women and highlight the importance of how the germline could inform risk for specific tumour mutation patterns, which could have important translational implications.

A Variant-Hop Algorithm in Forming Bluetooth Sensor Networks

Blue web is a self-organizing Bluetooth-based multihop network equipped with a scatter net formation algorithm and a hybrid routing protocol. Blue web uses a designated root node to initiate scatter net formation and two mechanisms are introduced. One is the role exchange mechanism in which only slave nodes serve as the role of relay through the whole scatter net. The other one is the return connection mechanism in which we convert the scatter net from a tree-shaped to a web-shaped topology. In this paper, a variant-hop algorithm in forming Bluetooth sensor scatter net is proposed. Based on the design of Blue web, this algorithm is a tier-based method to determine new roots and each new root spontaneously generates their individual web-shaped subnets. The heuristic method describes the variant-hop algorithms. With a constant k, a counter variable v, and return variable r as parameters, the variant-hop algorithm generates appropriate roots locally and evenly configures the subnet size. Computer simulation shows that this method achieves good network scalability and generates an efficient scatter net configuration for Bluetooth-based multihop sensor networks.

Conventional bio-probes are produced on a silicon substrate, they are not only fragile but unable to dispose according to the profile of human body in a large area manner, and thus the contact resistance between probe and skin may be increased. Besides, the signal processing devices are required to improve both S/N ratio and impedance matching problems. This paper proposes a novel remote human health monitor and an active RFId tag with replaceable non-frangible probes and thin-film-transistor (TFT) amplifiers. The probes are made of bio-degradable polymer (photo resist) and covered with bio-compatible TiN. In addition, we use two pieces of double sides conducting tapes to connect both TFT amplifiers and probe modules. Thus the probe module can be replaced easily by peeling the used probe module away from the double sides conducting tapes to supply a new one. Since the tag is a flexible plastic substrate, e, g. PT, PET and PI, so the probes are easier to deploy and conform to the human body profile. In addition, the signal can be amplified by the TFT amplifier nearby to improve both S/N ratio and impedance matching. Thus the human health conditions can be remotely monitored by measuring various acupuncture impedances via the active RFId tag. The active RFId monitoring range is 15m by using 2.45 GHz ISM band, the probe resistance and parasitic capacitance are as 2735 Ω and 60.7 pf, respectively. Since the typical human acupuncture point resistance is about 40-120KΩ, thus the proposed device and system can be applied.

In this paper, a ITO algorithm inspired by ITO stochastic process is proposed for Traveling Salesmen Problems (TSP), so far, many meta-heuristic methods have been successfully applied to TSP, however, as a member of them, ITO needs further demonstration for TSP. So starting from designing the key operators, which include the move operator, wave operator, etc, the method based on ITO for TSP is presented, and moreover, the ITO algorithm performance under different parameter sets and the maintenance of population diversity information are also studied.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is defined by a lack of expression of the estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER 2). Therefore, targeted therapy agents may not be used, and therapy is largely limited to chemotherapy. doxorubicin treatment consequently acquires undesired malignance characteristics [i.e., epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and multi-drug resistance]. Our results illustrated that doxorubicin triggered EMT and resulted in the acquisition of a mesenchymal phenotype in TNBC cells. Moreover, we found that transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) and PI3K/AKT signaling pathways were acquired for doxorubicin-induced EMT. Interestingly, we found that curcumin suppressed doxorubicin-induced EMT. Curcumin reversed doxorubicin-induced morphological changes, inhibited doxorubicin-induced downregulation of E-cadherin expressions, and inhibited doxorubicin-induced upregulation of vimentin expression. We also found that curcumin inhibited doxorubicin-induced EMT by inhibiting the TGF-β and PI3K/AKT signaling pathways. Moreover, curcumin enhanced the antiproliferative effects of doxorubicin in TNBC cells. In summary, our results suggest that doxorubicin in combination with curcumin may be a potential therapy for TNBC. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

The target of the paper is a spherical robot using Omni wheels to drive a spherical wheel, and its position control based on the cascade sliding model control (CSMC) has been studied. The structure of the CSMC is cascade combination of states of this dynamic model and a series of sliding surfaces. Because the CSMC is easy to result in a constant speed of spherical wheel, a constant without any switching cascade sliding model control, denoted as CSMCl, has been proposed to solve the undesired constant speed problem. The positive constant coefficients without any switching can release the body convergent rate, so the constant speed problem can be avoided to achieve the position control. © 2012 IEEE.

Effect of Anodic Current density on Characteristics and Low Temperature IR Emissivity of Ceramic Coating on Aluminium 6061 Alloy Prepared by Microarc Oxidation

High emitter MAO ceramic coatings were fabricated on the Al 6061 alloy, using different bipolar anodic current densities, in an alkali silicate electrolyte. We found that, as the current density increased from 10.94 A/dm 2 to 43.75 A/dm 2 , the layer thickness was increased from 10.9 μ m to 18.5 μ m, the surface roughness was increased from 0.79 μ m to 1.27 μ m, the area ratio of volcano-like microstructure was increased from 55.6% to 59.6%, the volcano-like density was decreased from 2620 mm −2 to 1420 mm −2 , and the γ -alumina phase was decreased from 66.6 wt.% to 26.2 wt.%, while the α -alumina phase was increased from 3.9 wt.% to 27.6 wt.%. The sillimanite and cristobalite phases were around 20 wt.% and 9 wt.%, respectively, for 10.94 A/dm 2 and approximately constant around 40 wt.% and less than 5 wt.%, respectively, for the anodic current densities 14.58, 21.88, and 43.75 A/dm 2 . The ceramic surface roughness and thickness slightly enhanced the IR emissivity in the semitransparent region (4.0–7.8 μ m), while the existing phases contributed together to raise the emissivity in the opaque region (8.6–16.0 μ m) to higher but approximately the same emissivities.
