Cytometry plays a crucial role in characterizing cell properties, but its restricted optical window (400-850 nm) limits the number of stained fluorophores that can be detected simultaneously and hampers the study and utilization of short-wave infrared (SWIR;900-1700 nm) fluorophores in cells. Here we introduce two SWIR-based methods to address these limitations: SWIR flow cytometry and SWIR image cytometry. We develop a quantification protocol for deducing cellular fluorophore mass. Both systems achieve a limit of detection of ∼0.1 fg cell-1 within a 30 min experimental time frame, using individualized, high-purity (6,5) single-wall carbon nanotubes as a model fluorophore and macrophage-like RAW264.7 as a model cell line. This high-sensitivity feature reveals that low-dose (6,5) serves as an antioxidant, and cell morphology and oxidative stress dose-dependently correlate with (6,5) uptake. Our SWIR cytometry holds immediate applicability for existing SWIR fluorophores and offers a solution to the issue of spectral overlapping in conventional cytometry. © 2024 The Authors. Cargo molecule-encapsulated dNA capsules synthesized with a solid sacrificial template have elicited significant interest in the last decade and have been used for active materials in applications ranging from biosensors to drug delivery. However, the correlation between template properties and the subsequent assembly and triggered release behavior of the resultant carriers remain uninvestigated. In this study, ethylene glycol (EG) was added during the CaCO3 precipitation synthesis to yield particles of various sizes and surface properties, and the adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-responsive release characteristics of the fabricated dNA capsules affected by these particle properties were investigated. The geometry, crystallization, and surface morphology of the CaCO3 particles co-precipitated at various EG concentrations were characterized. We discuss the integrity of cross-linking hybridization, fluorescent molecule internalization, degree of leakage, and release efficiency of the resulting dNA capsules and their relevance brought by particle properties. To achieve efficient encapsulation and cargo release, the surface roughness of the CaCO3 particles was explored and was deemed a key determinant of the compactness of the dNA shell after template removal. This effect was particularly strong in CaCO3 particles in connection with high EG concentrations. The dNA capsules fabricated using 83% EG exhibited low leakage, high loading, and moderate release efficiencies as well as a greater apparent association constant with ATP due to their small particle size and the high-integrity dNA shells. © 2023 American Chemical Society.

With the advance of artificial intelligence and natural language processing technology, a new tool is standing out in the field of understanding and generating natural language in a sophisticated way: the Large Language Model (LLM). According to several authors, LLMs can be used for various types of medical cases, providing access to different sources of information, and have opened up countless opportunities in the healthcare sector. This work aims to share the lessons learned during the process of developing an LLM-based assistant aimed at specific pathologies that are more prevalent in the elderly in order to support caregivers, whether they are private individuals, home care organizations, nursing homes or others. Optimizing γ-Aminobutyric Acid (GABA) Production via Fermentation of Morinda citrifolia L.

Noni fruit (Morinda citrifolia L.) is a tropical and subtropical plant grown on Pacific islands traditionally used as folk medicine to treat a wide range of bioactive compounds, including fatty acids, anthraquinones, flavonoids, polysaccharides, carotenoids and sterols. Noni juice can enhance immune-nerve interaction, while inhibiting age-related diseases. γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA), can be produced in large quantities by lactic acid bacteria, is an inhibitory nerve conductive substances. It can help relieve depression, insomnia, metabolic syndrome and other problems. In this study, lactic acid bacteria strains with the ability to produce GABA were screened from noni fruit. The lactic acid bacteria screened were used to ferment to improve the GABA functional components. Improve the efficacy of fermentation broth. And establish optimal fermentation parameters. Fermentation parameters have a great influence on the fermentation process and the amount of product produced. It is extremely important to understand the optimal culture conditions for the selected lactic acid bacteria. The optimal fermentation temperature (25,30,35 and 40oQ, the number of inoculated bacteria (6,7 and 8 Log CFUI mL), fermentation time (0 to 96 hours) and the amount of added Monosodium glutamate (MSG) (400, 500, 600 and 700 Mm), screen out the conditions that can produce high amounts of GABA. To establish optimal fermentation parameters, lactic acid bacteria and GABA help maintain human gastrointestinal function, resist free radicals, relieve sleep, relieve emotions and regulate blood sugar, in order to develop noni functional supplements. © 2024 Chinese Agricultural Chemical Society. Plasticrusts manifest as a coating on intertidal rocks due to environmental exposure. They refer to crushed plastic debris that blankets rocks found along intertidal shorelines. This study significantly contributes to a better understanding of the occurrence of these novel plastic formations, shedding light on their potential pathways of formation during the Anthropocene era. The research provides comprehensive insights into the composition, origins, challenges, and effective management strategies for removing coastal plastic litter. The findings of this investigation offer valuable evidence regarding the formation and impact of these recently discovered plastic items in coastal regions, prompting discussions about their formation processes and their effects on the marine ecosystem. Recognizing that these newly emerged plastic litter pose a considerable threat to the marine environment is crucial. With their emergence, we face an environmental challenge, especially concerning the health of coastal ecosystems. Plasticrusts, when degraded, can release microplastics (MPs) and nanoparticles (NPs) into the surrounding environment. These micro- and nano-sized plastic particles pose significant ecological risks as they persist in ecosystems, potentially harming wildlife and entering the food chain, causing widespread environmental contamination. Significantly, it outlines strategies to minimize the impact of this emerging plastic debris and its source. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

deploying deep Neural Networks (dNNs) on edge devices to handle artificial intelligence (AI) tasks is increasingly important, but this is often limited by the computational and energy constraints of typical edge devices. In this context, RISC-V-based internet of things edge computing engine, GAP8, provides a platform for edge AI. The engine features an 8-core cluster and ultra-low power consumption. Most importantly, GAP8 supports the deployment and acceleration of dNNs. However, there are limitations on memory size. In this research, we propose a hardware-adaptive optimization algorithm EN-HSPG to ensure high-speed operation of dNNs in edge AI. Specifically, the algorithm imposes sparsity-induced penalties to the weights and biases in batch normalization layers and selects layer-by-layer sparsity. Based on the optimized dNN, we further explored the performance of GAP8 for dNNs. Experimental results show that after deploying dNNs, the parameter count and floating point operations pruning rate of the model optimized with the EN-HSPG algorithm reach as high as 98.82% and 91.28% respectively, using only 54% of L2 memory. Additionally, the inference time of the EN-HSPG optimized model is just 115.26ms on the GAP8. Thus, the research enables the operation of complex deep learning networks on edge devices with limited computing capabilities.

Sensors in recent days have been in great demand in industrial zones of simple, low-cost sensors for effectively sensing various gases. This research work develops electrospinning fibers for optical ammonia sensing based on the wavelength shift. The optical sensing fibers were produced approach by the electrospinning technique. The addition of cellulose acetate (CA) matrix with doped Eosin-Y is an NH3 fluorophore. The same light emitting diode (LEd) light source was used to excite NH3-sensitive dyes at 380 nm peak wavelength. display the eosin Y emission spectrum, with a maximum wavelength of 582 nanometers. The observed red emission wavelength shift and fluorescence intensity at 582 nm decreased with increasing concentrations of NH3. The emission spectrum of eosin-Y fluorescence at 582 nanometers is changed with increasing NH3 concentrations ranging from 0 to 500 parts per million. In this work, according to the experiment results, the sensitivity of NH3 sensors is 7.73. Finally, the electrospinning fibers for optical NH3 sensing developed as a result of this research enable effective sensing of NH3 concentrations in practical applications in a variety of fields, including medical and industrial. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The study explores various 2d feature representations including spectrogram, MFCC spectrogram, log Mel-spectrogram, and the perceptual weighted log Mel-spectrogram (PW-LMSP) for acoustic scene classification (ASC). These 2d feature representations were classified using a bottom-up broadcast neural network (BBNN). The experimental results have shown that PW-LMSP outperforms other 2d representations. Further, the proposed method (PW-LMSP with BBNN) achieves accuracies of 91.2% and 91.6% respectively on the dCASE2018 and dCASE2019 development datasets, outperforming all the submissions in dCASE2018 and dCASE2019, as well as state-of-the-art approaches.

Fog and rain water chemistry in a tea plantation of northern Taiwan

Tea plantations are expanding globally and many are in mountainous areas with frequent fog but few studies have examined fog chemistry in these areas. We examined chemical composition of fog and rain water at a tea plantation in northern Taiwan. Fog water was collected using a Kroneis passive cylindrical fog-water collector and rain water was collected using a 20-cm-diameter funnel. The most abundant ions were Cl− and Na+ in both fog and rain waters due to the proximity of the site to the coast. The order of abundance of other ions was NO3− > Mg2+ > SO42− > Ca2+ > NH4+ > K+ > H+ in fog water and SO42− > K+ > NO3− > NH4+ > Ca2+ > Mg2+ > H+ in rain water. The concentration enrichment ratio (fog to rain) ranged between 2.2 (K+) and 22 (Mg2+) lying between sites near major emission sources and sites in remote areas, possibly because the immediate surrounding landscape is covered with secondary forests although it is near large cities. Factor analysis highlights the influences of sea-salt aerosols on the variation of fog and rain water chemistry. Sea-salt corrections using Na+ as the sea salt tracer led to negative concentrations of Cl− and Mg2+ suggesting that assumptions involved in sea-salt corrections were not satisfied. Agriculture influence is identified as a unique factor for explaining variance of K+, NH4+, and dissolved organic nitrogen (dON) concentrations in fog water but not rain water. Ion concentrations in fog and rain water were generally higher in the weekly samples associated with air trajectories passing through the continental East Asia than those associated with oceanic trajectories pointing to the role of regional pollution sources in affecting local fog and rain water chemistry. Our study highlights greater effects of tea agriculture on fog than rain water chemistry. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

This paper presents a comprehensive review on the current state of digital simulation technology and its strategic application usages with a key focus on advanced compression garments. Although three-dimensional (3d) digital garment simulators have significantly impacted the apparel and textile industry, their use has been limited to visual prototyping, quality checking, or marketing. The physical properties of garment simulators have been overlooked in advanced functional manufacturing. This literature review investigates the possibility of strategically utilizing virtual physical properties to enhance garment functions, specifically in wearables and medical-grade compression fields. The first phase of this paper gives an overview of the current state of 3d garment simulation tools and their measurement features. This is followed by a gap analysis between simulated and physical property evaluations, focusing on minimizing the gaps. The literature is thoroughly examined to identify appropriate studies that uses digital tools for compressional garments and add value to wearables and healthcare applications. This paper provides valuable insights for apparel and textile engineers, enabling them to better understand the limitations and capabilities of garment simulators in improving advanced features for specific end users. © TBIS 2023.
