Plasticrusts manifest as a coating on intertidal rocks due to environmental exposure. They refer to crushed plastic debris that blankets rocks found along intertidal shorelines. This study significantly contributes to a better understanding of the occurrence of these novel plastic formations, shedding light on their potential pathways of formation during the Anthropocene era. The research provides comprehensive insights into the composition, origins, challenges, and effective management strategies for removing coastal plastic litter. The findings of this investigation offer valuable evidence regarding the formation and impact of these recently discovered plastic items in coastal regions, prompting discussions about their formation processes and their effects on the marine ecosystem. Recognizing that these newly emerged plastic litter pose a considerable threat to the marine environment is crucial. With their emergence, we face an environmental challenge, especially concerning the health of coastal ecosystems. Plasticrusts, when degraded, can release microplastics (MPs) and nanoparticles (NPs) into the surrounding environment. These micro- and nano-sized plastic particles pose significant ecological risks as they persist in ecosystems, potentially harming wildlife and entering the food chain, causing widespread environmental contamination. Significantly, it outlines strategies to minimize the impact of this emerging plastic debris and its source. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The thriving energy demand of the gradually increasing population and modernized life style requires development in energy storage devices for usage in commercial electronic devices. In this particular work, we have explored electrochemical performances of bimetallic oxide CoAl2O4 and tuned its performance by decorating it on the carbon nanofibers. The CoAl2O4/CNFs are synthesized by deep eutectic solvents based hydrothermal method. The synthesized CoAl2O4 nanoparticle was found electrochemically active and the incorporation of CNFs end up boosting, its electrochemical performances as battery-type electrode. The obtained nanocomposites were characterized by various techniques. The electrochemically active CoAl2O4/CNFs exhibited 2.2-fold higher charge storage capacity than CoAl2O4. The CoAl2O4/CNFs exhibited specific capacity as high as 132 C/g at a constant applied current density of 1 A/g in 1 M KOH. The asymmetric device fabricated with CoAl2O4/CNFs electrodes exhibited excellent energy density of 20 Wh/kg at power density of 3000 W/kg. The CoAl2O4/CNFs electrode long-term stability has been minutely observed;the high Coulombic efficiency of 90% and high rate of capacity retention 95 %. In this work, an enzyme-free electrochemical sensor based on CoAl2O4/CNFs composite was developed for the detection of luteolin (LUT). Further modification of CoAl2O4/CNFs composite can improve the high surface area and catalytic capability of the composites. Under the optimal detection conditions, the prepared sensor has good linearity in the detection of LUT within range 30 nM − 73.5 μM with a limit of detection (LOd) of 0.0124 μM (12.4 nM). The stability and selectivity of the sensor is high, and can be used to detect LUT in various real samples. © 2022 Elsevier B.V.

The affordability and functionality of hand prosthetics in developing countries are still very limited. This work aims to present and evaluate the new version of the PrHand affordable robotic prosthesis (PrHand V3), built with soft robotics and compliant mechanisms. PrHand V3 implements a new frictionless tendon unification system, the degree of freedom of thumb opposition was removed, and the finger flexion was improved to the previous version, PrHand V2. The study contributes by evaluating these mechanical changes and conducting the first functional assessment of PrHand V3 with an amputee user. The Anthropomorphic Hand Assessment Protocol (AHAP) dexterity test was the first evaluation in this work; it evaluated how the prosthesis performs eight different grips. PrHand V3 was compared with a PrHand V2 and a commercial robotic prosthesis A3d from Prótesis Avanzadas SAS. PrHand V3’s score on the AHAP test was 80%. This result is higher than the 69% obtained by the PrHand V2 and the 79% obtained by A3d. The Activities Measure for Upper Limb Amputees (AM-ULA) test was the second evaluation in this work; An A3d amputee user performed 23 Activities of daily Living with PrHand V3 and an A3d. PrHand V3 obtained an average of 2.86/4 and A3d obtained an average of 2.96/4 without significant differences between the two tests. The soft actuation of PrHand V3 as an affordable prosthesis performs similarly to a commercial robotic prosthesis with the advantage of being more flexible to assist a trans-radial hand amputee.

developing a versatile methodology for high-speed water purification is critical for environmental and water source protection. Traditional adsorption and desorption were determined based on the concentration gradients. Herein, a versatile methodology is reported based on the simple application of an alternating electric field (AEF) on a system including dye-emulsified micelles (dEM) and adsorbents that simultaneously exhibit high-speed adsorption and desorption of dEM by frequency manipulation. Iron carbonyl polymers are incorporated into polystyrene microspheres (PMs) to generate iron carbonyl polystyrene microspheres (ICPMs) as adsorbents, which can vary the affinity with dEM and dielectric properties simultaneously. Both the dEM and microspheres were polarized under the AEF and generated electric dipole moments that could rapidly assemble the dEM and microspheres. Compared with the adsorption through the concentration gradient, the adsorption rate of dEM was enhanced significantly in the presence of an AEF of 20 V at 150 kHz of frequency because of the effect of particle assembly. At 1000 kHz of frequency, the alternative high-speed change between electrostatic attraction and repulsion hindered the adsorption of the dyes, which could also enhance the desorption rate. The ICPMs could be recycled 10 times within 20 min with frequency manipulation in the presence of AEF. This versatile methodology could provide novel insights into the development of high-speed water purification techniques. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.

Water contamination is a serious environmental issue posing a significant global challenge. Roxarsone (ROX), a widely used anticoccidial drug is excreted in urine and feces, potentially disrupting natural habitats. Therefore, rapid and cost-effective ROX detection is essential. In this study, we developed a 2d sheet structure of zinc molybdate decorated on MXene (ZnMoO4/MXene) for detecting ROX using electrochemical methods. The materials were characterized using appropriate spectrophotometric and voltammetric techniques. The ZnMoO4/MXene hybrid exhibited excellent electrocatalytic performance due to its rapid electron transfer rate and higher electrical conductivity. The ZnMoO4/MXene-modified GCE (ZnMoO4/MXene/GCE) showed a broad linear range with high sensitivity (10.413 μA μМ−1 cm−2) and appreciable limit of detection (LOd) as low as 0.0081 μM. It also demonstrated significant anti-interference capabilities, excellent storage stability, and remarkable reproducibility. Furthermore, the feasibility of utilizing ZnMoO4/MXene/GCE for monitoring ROX in water samples was confirmed, achieving satisfactory recoveries. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Naja atra, the Chinese cobra, is a major cause of snake envenomation in Asia, causing hundreds of thousands of clinical incidents annually. The current treatment, horse serum-derived antivenom, has unpredictable side effects and presents manufacturing challenges. This study focused on developing new-generation snake venom antidotes by using microbial phage display technology to derive nanobodies from an alpaca immunized with attenuated N. atra venom. Following confirmation of the immune response in the alpaca, we amplified VHH genes from isolated peripheral blood mononuclear cells and constructed a phage display VHH library of 1.0 × 107 transformants. After four rounds of biopanning, the enriched phages exhibited increased binding activity to N. atra venom. Four nanobody clones with high binding affinities were selected: aNAH1, aNAH6, aNAH7, and aNAH9. Specificity testing against venom from various snake species, including two Southeast Asian cobra species, revealed nanobodies specific to the genus Naja. An in vivo mouse venom neutralization assay demonstrated that all nanobodies prolonged mouse survival and aNAH6 protected 66.6% of the mice from the lethal dosage. These findings highlight the potential of phage display-derived nanobodies as valuable antidotes for N. atra venom, laying the groundwork for future applications in snakebite treatment. Nanoelectronic devices emulating neuro-synaptic functionalities through their intrinsic physics at low operating energies is imperative toward the realization of brain-like neuromorphic computers. In this work, we leverage the non-linear voltage dependent partial polarization switching of a ferroelectric field effect transistor to mimic plasticity characteristics of biological synapses. We provide experimental measurements of the synaptic characteristics for a 28nm high-k metal gate technology based device and develop an experimentally calibrated device model for large-scale system performance prediction. decoupled read-write paths, ultra-low programming energies and the possibility of arranging such devices in a cross-point architecture demonstrate the synaptic efficacy of the device. Our hardware-algorithm co-design analysis reveals that the intrinsic plasticity of the ferroelectric devices has potential to enable unsupervised local learning in edge devices with limited training data. A publicly verifiable key sharing mechanism based on threshold key sharing is provided to explore the security of users' private keys on the blockchain. Participating nodes check the key fragment after receiving it, effectively preventing it from being abused. The crucial sections of the nodes that participated in the critical splicing are made public during the critical recovery stage to prevent them from performing harmful things during the critical recovery stage. Add Ids to the nodes that participated in the crucial splicing during the key distribution stage;a dynamic threshold system is intended to track and update the status of malicious nodes in real time. When the node that possesses the crucial component fails, the owner of the critical component and the main node relocate a key element to the new participating nodes. To safeguard sensitive information. The experimental results show that this system has a key recovery rate of 80% and threshold qualities such as traceability, enforceability, and recoverability. © 2024 Copyright for this paper by its authors.

This study introduces a novel paradigm for achieving widely tunable many-body Fano quantum interference in low-dimensional semiconducting nanostructures, beyond the conventional requirement of closely matched energy levels between discrete and continuum states observed in atomic Fano systems. Leveraging Floquet engineering, the remarkable tunability of Fano lineshapes is demonstrated, even when the original discrete and continuum states are separated by over 1 eV. Specifically, by controlling the quantum pathways of discrete phonon Raman scattering using femtosecond laser pulses, the Raman intermediate states across the excitonic Floquet band are tuned. This manipulation yields continuous transitions of Fano lineshapes from antiresonance to dispersive and to symmetric Lorentzian profiles, accompanied by significant variations in Fano parameter q and Raman intensity spanning 2 orders of magnitude. A subtle shift in the excitonic Floquet resonance is further shown, achieved by controlling the intensity of the femtosecond laser, which profoundly modifies quantum interference strength from destructive to constructive interference. The study reveals the crucial roles of Floquet engineering in coherent light-matter interactions and opens up new avenues for coherent control of Fano quantum interference over a broad energy spectrum in low-dimensional semiconducting nanostructures. © 2024 The Author(s).
