Electronic structure theory provides a foundation for understanding chemical transformations and processes in complex chemical environments11. Our work is focused on the NWChemEx project that has selected two interrelated science challenges that address the production of advanced biomass-derived fuels and other value-added chemical compounds2. One of which is the dehydration of 2-propanol over a zeolite catalyst. Aqueous phase dehydration of 2-propanol was investigated using density functional theory (dFT) calculations. We considered and analyzed the thermochemistry of the dehydration of 2-propanol using NWChem calculations while the NWChemEx code is still under development. Realistically modeling the reaction in this study properly requires simulations using extended atomistic models. We validated our computational models by comparing the predicted outcomes for 2-propanol dehydration with the calculated results from 1-propanol dehydration studies.3 We used the first-principles dFT calculations to investigate aqueous phase dehydration of 2-propanol, examine the enthalpy of the 2-propanol reaction and computed the energy for geometry optimization for increasingly better basis sets: cc-pVdZ, cc-pVTZ, cc-pVQZ, cc-pV5Z, and cc-pV6Z4. The various transition states and minima along the reaction pathway are critical to inform the NWChemEx science challenge calculations. In this work, we established how the accuracy of the calculations depends on the basis sets, and we determined what basis sets are needed to achieve sufficient accurate results. We also calculated the reaction free energy as a function of temperature as thermodynamic parameter. We found that at low temperature the reaction is thermodynamically unfavorable. Nevertheless, dehydrating 2-propanol increases entropy, underscoring the need for high temperatures to facilitate the reaction. With increasing dependence on precision electronic equipment, self-protection is becoming essential. The protection circuits commonly used before were fuses and circuit breakers which, however, they are not enough for the current need of high-speed protection circuits and automated engineering logic. In this paper, we develop a new ultrahigh-speed protection circuit, which is over exceeded 20 times faster than traditional circuits and has the ability to self-recover when any failure occurs. With the new circuit developed, it is not necessary to do manual restart and will meet the future needs of protection for electronic precision equipment. This design provides greater convenience and reliability for the unmanned equipment for the future. © 2019 IEEE.

A comprehensive experiment-theory study on the magnetic field-induced spin-flip transitions (HC1 and HC2) and the field-temperature (H−T) phase diagram of nickel niobate (NiNb2O6) polycrystals is reported. Magnetic susceptibility (χ) measurements reveal the presence of quasi-one-dimensional magnetism with spin-1 Ni2+ Heisenberg spin chains, instead of Ising chains, along the easy axis (c axis). The ferromagnetic intrachain exchange-interaction strength, J0/kB (=4.20 K), between Ni2+ ions in the c axis is estimated from the molecular-field theory approximation. The interchain exchange interactions J1/kB=−1.335 K and J2/kB=−1.298 K have been determined from the experimentally obtained magnitudes of HC1=10.8 kOe and spin-saturated field HS=38 kOe. These magnitudes are consistent with the total magnetic exchange-interaction strength, J/kB=7.00 K obtained from χ−T data fitted with the Heisenberg linear chain model and our density-functional theory (dFT+U) calculations. The overall antiferromagnetic behavior of the NiNb2O6 system, correctly captured within our dFT+U calculations, occurs below TN=5.59±0.02 K as determined from the analysis of the specific heat (CP−T) data. The CP vs T data near TN is fitted to power-law expression CP=A|T−TN|−α yielding the critical exponent α=0.349(2) [0.349(1)] for T>TN (Tphase diagram mapped for H||c axis using various critical fields acquired from the χ(T, H) data including the field-induced transitions [HC1(T) and HS(T)] yields a triple point, TTP (H, T) = (5.0 kOe, 5.50 K) that separates multiple distinct spin configurations in this interesting system and calls for additional studies near the triple point. The companion H−T phase diagram for H||a axis is also presented using the data collected from published sources.

Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a biodegradable nanoscale film produced by microorganisms, which possesses great mechanical properties and biocompatibility. In this study, we produced foaming BC (FBC) utilizing foam medium with different concentrations of agar. In addition, carvacrol was loaded into the agar/FBC to establish active packaging material. Evaluation by characterization tests indicated that agar/FBC provided lower crystallinity (59.8%∼71.4%) and a high swelling ability (94.7%∼97.9%) compared to BC (92.2% and 96.1%). The 1.5% agar/FBC with carvacrol group exhibited the significantly highest antimicrobial properties against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Moreover, release measurements showed that greater agar addition contributed to higher protein and carvacrol release extents out of the film. Finally, a sea bass packaging test indicated that carvacrol with 1.5% agar/FBC presented a higher antimicrobial ability against Shewanella putrefaciens, great inhibition of lipid oxidation (67.5%), and a slower spoilage degree (49.8%) which suggested that agar/FBC with carvacrol has potential for active food packaging. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Osteoarthritis (OA) results from aging joints, injury, and obesity, emerging as an epidemic joint disease in addition to being a significant cause of pain disability. despite decades of efforts from scientists and physicians, the trend of the global increase in the incidence of OA does not slow down. As there are no effective pharmacotherapies able to reverse the degenerative process, cell-based and biological therapies for OA were invented and developed into a thriving field of regenerative medicine for orthopedics. First, autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) has been used to treat osteoarticular defects for over two decades. While ACI has demonstrated its capability to decelerate OA progression, there are still many issues that hamper its therapeutic efficacy. Therefore, researchers and physicians invented innovative biomaterials-assisted cell therapies, advanced surgical techniques for preserving primary chondrocytes' biological function and avoiding the donor-site mortality. Later, the discovery of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) revoluted cell therapies for cartilage repair. MSCs not only provide an alternative cell source with much higher proliferation rates but also have these advantages: no donor-site mortality, non-tumorigenic, and, most importantly, the capability of chondrogenic differentiation. This review paper explores the challenges associated with OA treatments using cell-based therapies and shares our vision for the future development of regenerative medicine for cartilage. © 2021 World Scientific Publishing Company.

Our previous study demonstrated that myc, mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation, mTOR, and stemness are independently responsible for chemoresistance in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cells. This study aimed to identify potential mechanisms of chemoresistance of the "7 + 3" induction in AML by using a single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) approach. In the present study, 13 untreated patients with de novo AML were enrolled and stratified into two groups: complete remission (CR; n = 8) and non-CR (n = 5). Single-cell RNA sequencing was used to analyze genetic profiles of 28,950 AML cells from these patients; results were validated using a previously published bulk RNA-seq dataset. Our study results showed chemoresistant AML cells had premature accumulation during early hematopoiesis. Hematopoietic stem cell-like cells from the non-CR group expressed more leukemic stem cell markers (Cd9, Cd82, IL3RA, and IL1RAP) than those from the CR group. Chemoresistant progenitor cells had impaired myeloid differentiation owing to early arrest of hematopoiesis. Notably, AML cells analyzed by scRNA-seq and bulk RNA-seq harbored a comparable myeloid lineage cell fraction, which internally validated our results. Using the TCGA database, our analysis demonstrated that patients with AML with higher expression of chemoresistant genetic markers (IL3RA and IL1RAP) had a worse overall survival (p < 0.01 for IL3RA; p < 0.05 for IL1RAP). In conclusion, AML cells responsive and resistant to the "7 + 3" induction were derived from a diverse cancerous hematopoietic stem cell population, as indicated by the specific genetic biomarkers obtained using scRNA-seq approach. Furthermore, arrest of hematopoiesis was shown to occur earlier in chemoresistant AML cells, furthering the current understanding of chemoresistance in AML.

The article proposes a method that allows to solve the complex combinatorial problem of structural optimization of an artificial neural network with a large dimension of the space of optimization parameters using the stochastic mutation function with a constant coefficient of variation. This study proposed a novel big data-based target cost management (TCM) system that automatically calculates the cost table. MATLAB, Python, and Excel were used to realize the system. TCM can be performed using the content of the calculated cost table. The system is suitable for managing catering inventory. This study presented the theoretical model of the proposed system and revealed that the system outperformed the traditional cost table implementation.
