Strength improvement of NC-SwBKP Sheets with PAE-PVA Pre-mixed Complexes (I): Effect of mixing ratio and dosages of polymers

The effects of pre-mixed complexes of PAE (polyamideamine-epichlorohydrin) and PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) on wet web strength and dry strength of NC (nitrocellulose fibers) - SwBKP (softwood bleached kraft pulp) sheets were investigated in terms of the mixing ratio and the dosage of the polymers. It was found that the addition of PAE or PAE-PVA complexes increased wet web tensile strength and dry strength of NC-SwBKP sheets. Especially, a small portion of addition of PVA, i.e., about 5% to 10% of PVA with 90% to 95% of PAE, was effective for increasing wet web strength and dry strength such as tensile strength and compressive strength. Increased solids content of NC-SwBKP wet webs after wet pressing with increased temperature of the pressing plates improved wet web tensile strength. The effects of step-by-step addition of PAE (polyamideamine-epichlorohydrin) and mi- cropolymer dual polymer system on wet web strength and dry strength of NC (nitrocellulose fibers)-SwBKP (softwood bleached kraft pulp) sheets were investigated in terms of the addition ratio of PAE and micropolymer and the dosage of the polymers. It was found that the addition of PAE alone or the step-by-step addition of PAE and micropolymer increased wet web tensile strength and dry strength of NC-SwBKP sheets. The dual polymer strengthening AIdS consisted of PAE and micropolymer in the ratio of 60:40 and 50:50 showed the highest increase in tensile strength and TEA. In case of bursting strength and compressive strength, it was obtained with the ratio of 70:30 (PAE: micropolymer). Tensile strength was able to be increased to a maximum of 84.1%, TEA was increased 126.4%, bursting strength was increased 73.5%, and compressive strength was increased to a maximum of 132.8%. In addition, the wet web tensile strength of NC- SwBKP sheets was able to be increased to a maximum of 68.7% with the step-by-step addition of PAE and micropolymer in the ratio of 95:5. © 2019 Korean Technical Assoc. of the Pulp and Paper Industry. A Global Genome-wide Scan with Optimal Cutoff Mining for Emerging Biomarkers in Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Background: The survival analysis of the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) dataset is a well-known method to discover the gene expression-based prognostic biomarkers of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). In order to utilize a continuous gene expression for survival analysis, it is necessary to determine a cutoff point by the dichotomization of the patients. There is some optimization software for cutoff determination. However, those predetermined cutoffs by software usually set at the median, 1/4 quantile, or 3/4 quantile of RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) value to find a significant P-value of the Kaplan-Meier curve. There are few clinicopathological features available on their pre-processed data sets. Methods: We developed a comprehensive workflow by R script, running on the Rstudio platform. It includes data retrieving and pre-processing, feature selection, cutoff mining engine, Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, Cox proportional hazard modeling, and biomarker discovery. Results: Using this workflow on the TCGA HNSCC cohort, we scanned human protein-coding genes (20,500) programmatically. After adjustment with other confounders, we found that the clinical tumor stage and the surgical margin involvement are independent risk factors in patient survival. According to the resulting tables with Bonferroni adjusted P-value under optimal cutoff as well as hazard ratio (>= 1.5), there were ten candidate biomarkers, named as dKK1, CAMK2N1, STC2, PGK1, SURF4, USP10, NdFIP1, FOXA2, STIP1, and dKC1, which are significantly associated with the poor prognosis of overall survival (OS). Objectives: Nontyphoidal Salmonella (NTS) is a major foodborne pathogen causing from acute gastroenteritis to bacteraemia, particularly in paediatric and elderly patients. Antimicrobial resistance of NTS, especially resistance to extended-spectrum cephalosporins, has emerged over the past decades. Methods: Thirteen NTS isolates resistant to ceftriaxone or cefotaxime were collected from a teaching hospital in Taipei, and another three from a tertiary hospital, in New Taipei City, Taiwan, from September 2018 to december 2019. Ten other archived isolates from 2000 to 2017 were also obtained. Complete genomes of the 26 isolates were obtained. Serovars, sequence types, resistomes, genetic relatedness, and sequence comparison of plasmids were analyzed. Results: Serogroups B, C2 and E were significantly associated with ampicillin resistance. Over 90% of these 26 isolates are susceptible to carbapenems and colistin. Genomic epidemiology of these isolates shows that bla_CMY-2-harbouring isolates in different serovars were prevalent over two decades, presumably resulting from highly mobile IncI1 plasmid harbouring bla_CMY-2. One type of the IncI1 plasmids contained a mobile element, IS26, which might be involved in the acquisition of antimicrobial resistance genes. Two emerging serovars, S. Goldcoast ST358 harbouring bla_CTX-M-55 on IncHI2 plasmids and S. Anatum ST64 harbouring bla_dHA-1 on IncA/C₂ plasmids persisted in Taiwan, possibly through the clonal spread. Integration of complete or partial plasmid sequences into host chromosomes or multiplications of the antimicrobial resistance genes also appears to be mediated by IS26, in the two emerging clones. Conclusion: The dynamic movement of cephalosporinase genes mediated by IS26 in NTS is of great concern. © 2023 The Authors

photonic technologies continue to drive the quest for new optical materials with unprecedented responses. A major frontier in this field is the exploration of nonlocal (spatially dispersive) materials, going beyond the local, wavevector-independent assumption traditionally adopted in optical material modeling. The growing interest in plasmonic, polaritonic, and quantum materials has revealed naturally occurring nonlocalities, emphasizing the need for more accurate models to predict and design their optical responses. This has major implications also for topological, nonreciprocal, and time-varying systems based on these material platforms. Beyond natural materials, artificially structured materials—metamaterials and metasurfaces—can provide even stronger and engineered nonlocal effects, emerging from long-range interactions or multipolar effects. This is a rapidly expanding area in the field of photonic metamaterials, with open frontiers yet to be explored. In metasurfaces, in particular, nonlocality engineering has emerged as a powerful tool for designing strongly wavevector-dependent responses, enabling enhanced wavefront control, spatial compression, multifunctional devices, and wave-based computing. Furthermore, nonlocality and related concepts play a critical role in defining the ultimate limits of what is possible in optics, photonics, and wave physics. This Roadmap aims to survey the most exciting developments in nonlocal photonic materials and metamaterials, highlight new opportunities and open challenges, and chart new pathways that will drive this emerging field forward—toward new scientific discoveries and technological *** by Optica Publishing Group under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 License . photonic technologies continue to drive the quest for new optical materials with unprecedented responses. A major frontier in this field is the exploration of nonlocal (spatially dispersive) materials, going beyond the local, wavevector-independent assumption traditionally made in optical material modeling. On one end, the growing interest in plasmonic, polaritonic and quantum materials has revealed naturally occurring nonlocalities, emphasizing the need for more accurate models to predict and design their optical responses. This has major implications also for topological, nonreciprocal, and time-varying systems based on these material platforms. Beyond natural materials, artificially structured materials—metamaterials and metasurfaces–can provide even stronger and engineered nonlocal effects, emerging from long-range interactions or multipolar effects. This is a rapidly expanding area in the field of photonic metamaterials, with open frontiers yet to be explored. In the case of metasurfaces, in particular, nonlocality engineering has become a powerful tool for designing strongly wavevector-dependent responses, enabling enhanced wavefront control, spatial compression, multifunctional devices, and wave-based computing. Furthermore, nonlocality and related concepts play a critical role in defining the ultimate limits of what is possible in optics, photonics, and wave physics. This Roadmap aims to survey the most exciting developments in nonlocal photonic materials, highlight new opportunities and open challenges, and chart new pathways that will drive this emerging field forward–toward new scientific discoveries and technological advancements.
