The association between body mass index and osteoporosis in a Taiwanese population: a cross-sectional and longitudinal study

This study investigates the correlation between body mass index (BMI) and osteoporosis utilizing data from the Taiwan Biobank. Initially, a comprehensive analysis of 119,009 participants enrolled from 2008 to 2019 was conducted to assess the association between BMI and osteoporosis prevalence. Subsequently, a longitudinal cohort of 24,507 participants, initially free from osteoporosis, underwent regular follow-ups every 2–4 years to analyze the risk of osteoporosis development, which was a subset of the main cohort. Participants were categorized into four BMI groups: underweight (BMI < 18.5 kg/m²), normal weight (18.5 kg/m² ≤ BMI < 24 kg/m²), overweight (24 kg/m² ≤ BMI < 27 kg/m²), and obese groups (BMI ≥ 27 kg/m²). A T-score ≤ − 2.5 standard deviations below that of a young adult was defined as osteoporosis. Overall, 556 (14.1%), 5332 (9.1%), 2600 (8.1%) and 1620 (6.7%) of the participants in the underweight, normal weight, overweight and obese groups, respectively, had osteoporosis. A higher prevalence of osteoporosis was noted in the underweight group compared with the normal weight group (odds ratio [OR], 2.20;95% confidence interval [95% CI], 1.99 to 2.43;p value < 0.001) in multivariable binary logistic regression analysis. Furthermore, in the longitudinal cohort during a mean follow-up of 47 months, incident osteoporosis was found in 61 (9%), 881 (7.2%), 401 (5.8%) and 213 (4.6%) participants in the underweight, normal weight, overweight and obese groups, respectively. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards analysis revealed that the risk of incident osteoporosis was higher in the underweight group than in the normal weight group (hazard ratio [HR], 1.63;95% CI 1.26 to 2.12;p value < 0.001). Our results suggest that BMI is associated with both the prevalence and the incidence of osteoporosis. In addition, underweight is an independent risk factor for developing osteoporosis. Many high-performance computing applications are using MPI (Message Passing Interface) for communication. The performance of MPI library affects the performance of MPI applications. Various techniques like communication latency reduction, increasing bandwidth, and increasing scalability are available for improving the performance of message passing. In multi-core cluster environment, the communication latency can be further reduced by topology-aware process placement. This technique involves three steps: finding communication pattern of MPI application (application topology), finding architecture details of underlying multi-core cluster (system topology), and mapping processes to cores. In this paper, we have proposed novel "ClustMap" algorithm for the third step. By using this algorithm, both system and application topologies are mapped. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms over existing process placement techniques. © 2018, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Joint registration of a stack of 2d histological sections to recover 3d structure ("3d histology reconstruction") finds application in areas such as atlas building and validation of in vivo imaging. Straightforward pairwise registration of neighbouring sections yields smooth reconstructions but has well-known problems such as "banana effect" (straightening of curved structures) and "z-shift" (drift). While these problems can be alleviated with an external, linearly aligned reference (e.g., Magnetic Resonance (MR) images), registration is often inaccurate due to contrast differences and the strong nonlinear distortion of the tissue, including artefacts such as folds and tears. In this paper, we present a probabilistic model of spatial deformation that yields reconstructions for multiple histological stains that that are jointly smooth, robust to outliers, and follow the reference shape. The model relies on a spanning tree of latent transforms connecting all the sections and slices of the reference volume, and assumes that the registration between any pair of images can be see as a noisy version of the composition of (possibly inverted) latent transforms connecting the two images. Bayesian inference is used to compute the most likely latent transforms given a set of pairwise registrations between image pairs within and across modalities. We consider two likelihood models: Gaussian (`2 norm, which can be minimised in closed form) and Laplacian (`1 norm, minimised with linear programming). Results on synthetic deformations on multiple MR modalities, show that our method can accurately and robustly register multiple contrasts even in the presence of outliers. The framework is used for accurate 3d reconstruction of two stains (Nissl and parvalbumin) from the Allen human brain atlas, showing its benefits on real data with severe distortions. ABSTRACTABSTRACTAll-terrain vehicle (ATV) crashes are one of the leading causes of death and injury in agriculture across the United States. Use of ATVs is highly prevalent in rural areas and has seen an increase in their application for a variety of agricultural work tasks. Empirical research on the use of these vehicles for agricultural tasks and associated injuries is limited, especially in the United States. Moreover, little is known about the risk factors associated with ATV-related injuries while doing farm work. A comprehensive review was conducted to evaluate the current injury burden of ATV use in agriculture, the need for future research, and possible solutions related to agricultural ATV safety. Potential injury prevention approaches are evaluated based on the hierarchy of control, including elimination or substitution (using side-by-side vehicles instead of ATVs or modifying ATV design), engineering control (operator protection devices), administrative authority (regulations and standards in the United States and around the world), training, and use of personal protective equipment. In addition, vehicle nomenclature, risk factors, and crash mechanisms are reviewed. Recommendations to decrease the likelihood of ATV crashes and injuries are provided.

Objectives:Many cancer biomarkers such as the circulating tumor cells/microemboli (CTCs/CTM) have been reported significant associations with clinical outcomes. However, different biomarkers have different sensitivities and specificities for cancer types and cohort patients, and synergistic effects between certain biomarkers have also been observed, leading to the inaccurate, fluctuating, and even controversial results when multiple biomarkers are analyzed together. In this paper, a novel combinational index, P-score, was developed for monitoring and predicting the disease condition of lung cancer patients during follow-up visits. Materials and methods:There were totally 13 return patients with 54 blood samples involved in this study to examine the number of CTC and CTM. Information from one group of 7 patients including 27 blood samples with published clinical data was employed to develop while those from another group of 4 patients containing 14 blood samples with unpublished clinical data were used to validate the P score in prediction. Enumerations were based on immunofluorescent staining images. distributions of CTC/CTM and their frequencies in stratified patients were carefully examined and analyzed the ROC curve and AUC value to develop the P score and P score-based prediction model. Results and conclusion:We found that the predictive power of P-score was not only comparable to the traditional cancer marker, in comparison with individual CTC/CTM, more false positives could be corrected by using P-score, thereby to improve the accuracy of analysis. From our preliminary validation tests, the prognosis and disease progression monitored longitudinally by P-score were further confirmed by clinical outcome data from physicians and its sensitivity was even better than those from individual biomarkers. We believe that this novel combinational indicator could be a promising tool to interpret clinical outcomes more accurately from multiple factors, particularly useful

The selective monitoring of G-quadruplex (G4) structures in living cells is important to elucidate their functions and reveal their value as diagnostic or therapeutic targets. Here we report a fluorogenic probe ( CV2 ) able to selectively light-up parallel G4 dNA over antiparallel topologies. CV2 was constructed by conjugating the excimer-forming CV dye with a peptide sequence ( l -Arg- l -Gly-glutaric acid) that specifically recognizes G4s. CV2 forms self-assembled, red excimer-emitting nanoaggregates in aqueous media, but specific binding to G4s triggers its disassembly into rigidified monomeric dyes, leading to a dramatic fluorescence enhancement. Moreover, selective permeation of CV2 stains G4s in mitochondria over the nucleus. CV2 was employed for tracking the folding and unfolding of G4s in living cells, and for monitoring mitochondrial dNA (mtdNA) damage. These properties make CV2 appealing to investigate the possible roles of mtdNA G4s in diseases that involve mitochondrial dysfunction.

The development of Internet of Things (IoT) makes the application of smart homes grow rapidly. It is very popular to install smart appliances in the house. However, building a smart control system at home not only costs a lot but also has many limitations. For this reason, this study proposes a smart homes control system to easily integrate IoT, WSN, smart robot and single-board computer to implement smart home applications. We use wireless technology and automatic equipment to avoid excessive communication cable and to make the house more intelligent to keep in-house movement unimpeded and indoor space tidy and to let appliance adjust appropriate environment settings automatically. This system brings intelligence and convenience to home, making living environment more comfortable. © 2018 IEEE.

5G (fifth generation) technology is used to interconnect all terminals, networks, multiple wireless technologies, applications simultaneously which can also switch between them based on VOIP (Voice-over-IP), flat IP, and Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6), thus user experiences call volume services and high-level data transmission. 5G network is reliable and very fast with minimum delay, higher data rate, greater security, real-time data handling, less error rate, and few data losses. The core technologies used in 5G networks include cloud computing, Heterogeneous Network (Het Net), internet of things (IoT), Cognitive Radio (CR) network, software-defined networking (SdN), Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO), and massive MIMO. 5G produces different harmful effects such as human health issues, environmental issues, health issues on birds and animals, thermal effects, etc. Regulating agencies have to set a Specific Absorption Rate (SAR), its maximum levels for handsets, and every mobile phone must have a SAR rating. 5G technology is used as intelligent technology in which 5G mobile phones can also be used as a tablet PC. This paper presents a general review on 5G along with its comparison with 4G, the general architecture of 5G, a detailed explanation about core technologies of 5G, and also harmful effects on different issues using 5G.
