Atomically thin graphene exhibits fascinating mechanical properties, although its hardness and transverse stiffness are inferior to those of diamond. To date, there hasn't been any practical demonstration of the transformation of multi-layer graphene into diamond-like ultra-hard structures. Here we show that at room temperature and after nano-indentation, two-layer graphene on SiC(0001) exhibits a transverse stiffness and hardness comparable to diamond, resisting to perforation with a diamond indenter, and showing a reversible drop in electrical conductivity upon indentation. density functional theory calculations suggest that upon compression, the two-layer graphene film transforms into a diamond-like film, producing both elastic deformations and sp2-tosp3chemical changes. Experiments and calculations show that this reversible phase change is not observed for a single buffer layer on SiC or graphene films thicker than 3 to 5 layers. Indeed, calculations show that whereas in two-layer graphene layer-stacking configuration controls the conformation of the diamond-like film, in a multilayer film it hinders the phase transformation. An Experimental and Numerical Investigation on Static Vibration Response of Multi-Cracked Rotor Shaft

Many process industries make wide use of rotating machineries such as engines, pumps and turbines. It is seen that heavy-duty and high-speed shafts develop cracks due to fatigue at some time during their life cycle. Under certain conditions, the catastrophic failure of shaft unavoidable as stress required for propagation is smaller than that required for crack initiation. The above conditions mean that the detection, diagnosis and analysis of crack plays important role in reliable operations. Using measurement of vibration characteristics condition of the machine periodically monitored. Many researchers have analyzed the nonlinear dynamic analysis of cracked rotors. In this paper, the experimental investigation has been carried on single and multi-transverse cracked rotor shafts by measurement of static vibration characteristics. The present study aims to, experimental investigation of the vibration response of uncracked, single cracked and multi-cracked rotor shaft with different size and locations of cracks. The experimental setup has been developed for measurement of natural frequency. The changes in the shaft's natural frequencies are investigated experimentally. Natural frequencies have been obtained through vibration analyzer system using impact hammer test under static conditions. The results obtained through experimentation conform to the numerical results obtained in ANSYS.

The global network of gravitational-wave observatories now includes five detectors, namely LIGO Hanford, LIGO Livingston, Virgo, KAGRA, and GEO 600. These detectors collected data during their third observing run, O3, composed of three phases: O3a starting in 2019 April and lasting six months, O3b starting in 2019 November and lasting five months, and O3GK starting in 2020 April and lasting two weeks. In this paper we describe these data and various other science products that can be freely accessed through the Gravitational Wave Open science Center at https://***. The main data set, consisting of the gravitational-wave strain time series that contains the astrophysical signals, is released together with supporting data useful for their analysis and documentation, tutorials, as well as analysis software packages. © 2023. Polybenzimidazole membranes with nanophase-separated structure induced by non-ionic hydrophilic side chains for vanadium flow batteries

Polybenzimidazole (PBI) membranes with nanophase-separated structure induced by non-ionic hydrophilic side chain are designed and fabricated for vanadium flow batteries (VFBs). The designed PBI membranes are prepared by grafting non-ionic hydrophilic side chains via an N-substitution reaction. This molecular modification induces nanophase separation and formation of hydrophilic clusters, which act as effective proton transfer pathways, hence dramatically improving the proton conductivity. Meanwhile, the vanadium permeability is inappreciable due to the appropriate size of hydrophilic clusters and donnan exclusion of protonated grafted-PBI membranes (GPBI). Free from ion exchange groups, GPBI membranes maintain the good chemical stability of the pristine PBI membrane. As a result, the designed membrane exhibits an impressive performance, combining ultrahigh proton conductivity, ion selectivity and chemical stability. The GPBI-based VFB exhibits a coulombic efficiency of over 99% and an energy efficiency of 84% at 120 mA cm⁻², the highest reported for dense PBI membranes for VFB applications. The decent stability of GPBI membranes is demonstrated by the stable performance over 200 charge–discharge cycles and the ex situ immersion test. This work provides a new insight into the design of high-performance PBI membranes for VFB applications.

The Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2) is a widely used measure of a core facet of the positive body image construct. However, extant research concerning measurement invariance of the BAS-2 across a large number of nations remains limited. Here, we utilised the Body Image in Nature (BINS) dataset - with data collected between 2020 and 2022 - to assess measurement invariance of the BAS-2 across 65 nations, 40 languages, gender identities, and age groups. Multi-group confirmatory factor analysis indicated that full scalar invariance was upheld across all nations, languages, gender identities, and age groups, suggesting that the unidimensional BAS-2 model has widespread applicability. There were large differences across nations and languages in latent body appreciation, while differences across gender identities and age groups were negligible-to-small. Additionally, greater body appreciation was significantly associated with higher life satisfaction, being single (versus being married or in a committed relationship), and greater rurality (versus urbanicity). Across a subset of nations where nation-level data were available, greater body appreciation was also significantly associated with greater cultural distance from the United States and greater relative income inequality. These findings suggest that the BAS-2 likely captures a near-universal conceptualisation of the body appreciation construct, which should facilitate further cross-cultural research.

In this work two formulations for minimizing the total completion time a parallel machine scheduling problem with dependent set up times are proposed. They are developed from formulations for the same problem for a single machine environment and showed have a better performance than a formulation based on m-Traveling Salesmen Problem, consuming less computational time on instances of the same size and allow solving to optimality more than five times larger data instances. © 2016
