The Community Human Development Index (CHDI)is a multidimensional measure designed to assess human achievement across scales at the state, county, city, and neighborhood levels to advance the localization of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs). Currently, one of the most widely used metrics is the Human Development Index (HDI), a composite index of income, education, and life expectancy calculated at a national level. However, national averages obscure substantial disparities between states, cities and smaller neighborhoods in large urban areas. The CHDI model is designed to gain a better understanding of heterogeneities in human development within cities and across communities on a subnational scale. As a case study, we calculated the CHDI for nearly every census tract in the state of Illinois in the United States. The analysis revealed significant disparities in local levels of development within Illinois. It also highlighted differences between communities within cities, including the city of Chicago. These results demonstrate that multidimensional indices created to track sustainable development at the national level can be disaggregated, calculated, analyzed and compared across scales. The CHDI model can be utilized by researchers and policymakers to identify, visualize and address local inequalities, and design and implement evidence based customized solutions at the community level.

The problem of modeling and forecasting the amount of cash in circulation in the country based on the example of the Russian Federation was formulated. Based on the methods of mathematical statistics and econometrics the dominant factors having the most significant effect on the amount of cash in circulation found. The problem in the form of an econometric model represented as a linear multiple regression localized. The quality of the resulting model justified.

Tension stiffening behavior of ordinary Portland and geopolymer concrete: A review

The contribution of concrete to carry tensile stresses between the primary cracks and stiffen the cracked member or the so-called “tension stiffening”- has gained a lot of attention among researchers. This is because tension stiffening significantly influences the cracking behavior and the deflection response of the structural member. Therefore, this paper aimed to summarize and discuss the findings on tension stiffening effects of both ordinary Portland concrete (OPC) and geopolymer concrete in order to give a clear understanding of cracking and deformation response of reinforced concrete at service limit state. This paper also emphasized various parameters that play a significant role in tension stiffening behavior including compressive strength of concrete (Fcu), concrete cover to bar diameter ratio (c/bd), reinforcement percentage (ρ %) and shrinkage. In general, most researchers have proved that fly ash geopolymer reinforced concrete exhibits less carbon footprints and considered a cheaper construction material compared to OPC. Moreover, it has comparable mechanical properties and so it can be fully incorporated for applications in civil engineering projects rather than OPC. Hence, this paper provided a comprehensive overview of state-of-the-art research on tension stiffening and its effects on crack behavior and deflection response of OPC and geopolymer concrete. The possibility of adopting tension stiffening approaches of OPC to be used for geopolymer concrete is also emphasized.

Electronic medical records (EMR) have been implemented in developed countries since 1972 when the first computer-stored medical record at Wishard Memorial Hospital was designed. However, less seem to be known about EMRs in an African context. The purpose of this paper is therefore to review studies on EMRs implemented in sub-Saharan Africa and to identify benefits and challenges met. Articles available in PubMed, PMC, Scopus, JAMIA and Google were searched through JIBS online library using the search string "EMR systems in Sub-Saharan Africa". In most the papers, EMRs have been implemented in HIV/AIDS settings allowing better monitoring of patients under antiretroviral therapy (ART). EMR systems have also succeeded to increase the number of patients under ART. Moreover, EMRs have improved work processes as they have reduced patients waiting time and enhanced monitoring of medical appointments. However, EMRs have suffered lack of electricity, poor Internet connectivity and computer illiteracy. Today, HIV/AIDS care providers have benefited on the implementation of EMRs and there is a possibility to extend the implementation to other healthcare departments.

A landslide has been one of the many problems in geotechnical engineering, whereas, from one of the cases, a failure happened at the interface layer between the overburden and its underlying soil. As interface shear strength has become one of the growing topics in research, this paper summarizes and discusses the research development of interface shear strength and its possibility to explain the interface shear behavior at a slope. The discussion was limited to cohesive soils and experiment-based behavior of the interface shear. Some research has been selected in order to understand the development of interface shear strength through time and two examples of slope interlayer shear behavior were selected. It was known that there are three common tests of interface shear behavior used: simple shear, direct shear, and ring shear test. The development of interface shear strength started at 1960s between soil and construction materials where the four major components were defined. As the research grows, many other types of soils, interfaces, and the effect of the tests became the topic of the research. In the end, the examples given from modeling the interface shear behavior from a slope gives a new perspective of cases for interface shear strength in slope analysis.

Evaluation of Ground Anchor Design on Man-made Cut Slope of Cemented Sand: A Case Study

A system of ground anchor and horizontal drain on a steep cut-slope in Bogor, West Java was designed to stabilize the slope below a bridge structure spanning across a river. Due to the difficulties in the construction of the ground anchor, the design of the ground anchor was evaluated and analyzed for its effect on the stability of the slope. The slope is assumed to have three layers of soil consist of sandy clay (medium stiff), sandy silt (hard), sandy silt (medium stiff), and cemented sand gravel. Four scenarios were evaluated to examine the slope stability: initial stage, the addition of horizontal drain, construction of bored piles with horizontal drain, and addition of ground anchor after the construction of bored piles and horizontal drain. Analysis were done with evaluating the Factor of Safety (FS) of the slope. It was found that the addition of horizontal drain played a big part in stabilizing the slope from initial stage (FS = 0.933 to FS = 1.546), whereas the addition of ground anchor and bored piles were not apparent after the addition of horizontal drain (FS = 1.545 and FS = 1.555), indicating that the main problem of the slope was the high groundwater level. Other than the constructed solutions, shortcrete should also be given at the critical slip surface at the top and surface of the slope in order to reduce erosion by run-off water.

Iterating an Innovation Model: Challenges and Opportunities in Adapting Accelerator Practices in Evolving Ecosystems

Startup accelerators have expanded worldwide in recent years, fostering the development of technology startups and spreading Lean practices and Silicon Valley values to all corners of the globe. These accelerators clearly create value—for the teams whose development they foster, the products they create, and the larger ecosystems they build. But there are also a number of challenges arising from the model and how it is implemented in different contexts globally. Through fieldwork at accelerators in Singapore and Buenos Aires, I investigate the global expansion of this innovation model. In this paper, I discuss the most salient challenges and discuss potential opportunities emerging from these challenges, and how other methods and practices such as design thinking, intensive user research and flexible, bottom up-approaches can add value to the accelerator process. I also highlight mutually beneficial ways the EPIC community can become more involved in startups ecosystems.

A practical approach for the consideration of single pile and pile group installation effects in clay: Numerical modelling

In this paper, a practical approach for the consideration of single pile and pile group installation effects in clay is presented using some novel procedures implemented in the finite element (FE) software package PLAXIS 2D. Data reported at a soft ciay site at Islais Creek, San Francisco are used to provide calibration for the constitutive model and to validate initial predictions of single pile installation effects. A short parametric study was then undertaken to examine the influence of a number of pile/soil parameters on the soil stresses generated around a single pile after installation and subsequent consoJidation. In addition, a new simplified method is proposed to consider group installation effects over-and-above those associated with an equivalent single pile involving the volumetric expansion of tunnels within a plane-strain framework. Remarkably, results show that the installation of additional group piles has a negligible influence after consolidation.
