engineering graduates who enter the work environment after finishing their studies are faced with completely different setting compared to the safe academy environment that they are used to. Main differences at the workplace include dealing with uncertainty on a daily basis, solving open-ended and/or ill-structured problems and having to manage teamwork and communication on different educational and professional levels. Students should be faced with these aspects of engineering practice during their studies in order to prepare for work. As conventional engineering curricula often do not provide opportunities for such a practice, we designed the internship-like course with general objective to provide this opportunity for final year students and to define teaching strategies that can support students in the transition from the academy to the workplace. In this paper we describe main issues and challenges of the learning experiences that we found during our action research over four 10 week courses, from 2010/2011 to 2012/2013. © 2014 IEEE.

Super-resolution algorithms aim to produce magnified high-resolution versions from low-resolution images. Some methods, however, are prone to generate blur during the process. Simple sharpening filters are adopted to alleviate this type of artifact. However, the actual effectiveness of this approach is not clear-cut in the literature. This work evaluates the effect of three simple sharpening filters on the quality of images obtained from super-resolution methods. Two metrics were considered in the evaluation: the Peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) metric, and the Learned Perceptual Image Patch Similarity (LPIPS). One of the filters could consistently improve the LPIPS metric of magnified images from diverse benchmark sets on top of seven super-resolution methods. The increments obtained for the perceptual metric seem to occur due to the sharpening effect. Improvements on PSNR values were not as consistent. © 2022 SPIE.

The cyber-physical production system (CPPS) was developed for the interconnection between operational technology (OT) and information and communication technology (ICT) among the machines and decentralized production control. However, OT and ICT are now getting more complex in the modern industry. To enhance industrial management and production process, the CPPS based on the 5G architecture under production environments can provide a more comprehensive solution in the context of Industry 4.0. For this purpose, a 5G CPPS model to improve the interoperability of CPPS in ICT and OT is proposed to build a virtualized Industry 4.0 asset management shell system. First, real-time task artifacts and 5G communication modules are bound in a certain form of virtualization. Second, task artifacts are released to the production line in a real-time scheduling. Third, an order is placed on a production line and split into multiple tasks for production process. Single-machine single-workpiece and multi-machine and multi-workpiece processing cases are used for testing in the production line. Experimental results show that the proposed 5G CPPS can efficiently achieve multi-machine work piece processing. © 2022, The Author(s).

COEM: Cross-Modal Embedding for MetaCell Identification

Metacells are disjoint and homogeneous groups of single-cell profiles, representing discrete and highly granular cell states. Existing metacell algorithms tend to use only one modality to infer metacells, even though single-cell multi-omics datasets profile multiple molecular modalities within the same cell. Here, we present Cross-MOdal Embedding for MetaCell Identification (COEM), which utilizes an embedded space leveraging the information of both scATAC-seq and scRNA-seq to perform aggregation, balancing the trade-off between fine resolution and sufficient sequencing coverage. COEM outperforms the state-of-the-art method SEACells by efficiently identifying accurate and well-separated metacells across datasets with continuous and discrete cell types. Furthermore, COEM significantly improves peak-to-gene association analyses, and facilitates complex gene regulatory inference tasks. © 2022, CC BY.

Simulation on directed graphs is an important method for understanding the dynamics in the systems where connectivity graphs contain cycles. Discrete Stochastic Heterogeneous Simulator (DiSH) is one of the simulation tools with wide application, which uses regulator values to calculate state updates of regulated elements. Here we present a new simulation approach DiSH-trend which also takes into account the trends in regulating elements. We demonstrate the features of trend-based regulation, as well as hybrid regulation, which is a combination of the trend- and level-based approaches. The modeling capabilities are demonstrated on a small toy model, showcasing different functionalities. Real-world capabilities are demonstrated on a larger network model of food insecurity in the Ethiopian region Oromia. Adding trend-based regulation to models results in increased modeling flexibility, and hybrid regulation improves qualitative dynamic behavior prediction. With appropriate data, DiSH-trend becomes a powerful tool for exploring intervention strategies.

He received the MScEE degree from the Technical University of Denmark (TUD) in 1987. In 1987 he joined the Electromagnetics Institute at TUD where developed high speed digital circuitry for the Danish Airborne SAR system. In parallel with the above work he began a PhD program in September 1988 at TUD. His research interests are in the field of numerical analysis and design of radiating printed structures. He is currently working at ESTEC The Netherlands. Ulrich V. Gothelf was born in Denmark on November 21 1965. He received the MScEE degree from the Technical University in Denmark in March 1991. He is currently pursuing a PhD degree in Electrical Engineering at Electromagnetics Institute at the Technical University in Denmark. His main research interest is numerical calculation on microstrip antennas.

A network model for an aperture coupled microstrip patch is developed. The derivation of the topology of the network model is based on electromagnetic arguments. The values of the components in the network model are found by optimization using input reflection coefficient data computed from a method of moments model. The topology of the network model is described together with a procedure for the determination of the values of its components. After the determination of the values of the components, the network model can be used in a CAD program for a large range of mechanical dimensions, without the need of additional method of moments calculations. Barriers to the participation of distributed energy resources (DERs) in wholesale electricity markets have limited the use of DERs for power system security and resilience. In September 2020, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) approved an order to reduce these barriers. FERC Order No. 2222 enables the participation of DER aggregators in wholesale electricity markets. DERs include renewable generation and technologies that support the integration of renewable generation by increasing grid flexibility and resilience. Requiring wholesale energy markets to allow DER aggregator participation provides a path for DERs to become competitive in these markets. As the contribution from aggregated DERs continues to increase, the aggregator's role in supporting grid security and resilience will become more critical. This paper reviews work that demonstrates how DER aggregators can provide resilience support through technical capabilities, operational strategies, and secure communication architectures. Socioeconomic influences and impacts of aggregators, including implications for social resilience, are presented. In surveying the current state-of-the-art across different but interconnected topics, we illustrate how aggregators can be power system participants that enhance grid security. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to enhancing resilience in a power grid that includes a growing cohort of DER aggregators, but there are many options for aggregators to contribute to a more resilient and secure power grid.

This study explores the spatial-temporal patterns of particulate matter (PM) in Taiwan. Probability map of PM and daily patterns are discussed in this study. Data mining provides more detailed spatial-temporal information for PM variations and trends. The proposed model will show that data mining provides a relatively high goodness of fit and sufficient space-time explanatory power, particularly air pollution frequency and affect areas. In the proposed model, a method using Dynamic Time Warping is proposed to analyse temporal similarity between stations. The proposed model can eliminate global effect on a single station through the performance of multiple stations. The proposed model will further be used for prediction of PM2.5. The prediction results will discuss the spatial-temporal relations between stations. This study will investigate the distribution of PM and its cyclicality.

In laparoscopic surgery, the surgeon must operate with a limited field of view and reduced depth perception. This makes spatial understanding of critical structures difficult, such as an endophytic tumour in a partial nephrectomy. Such tumours yield a high complication rate of 47%, and excising them increases the risk of cutting into the kidney's collecting system. To overcome these challenges, an augmented reality guidance system is proposed. Using intra-operative ultrasound, a single navigation aid, and surgical instrument tracking, four augmentations of guidance information are provided during tumour excision. Qualitative and quantitative system benefits are measured in simulated robot-assisted partial nephrectomies. Robot-to-camera calibration achieved a total registration error of 1.0 ± 0.4 mm while the total system error is 2.5 ± 0.5 mm.
