Low-cost real-time environmental noise monitoring system design and implementation

Environmental noise has a negative impact on human health and well-being. Real-time noise monitoring for effective noise control and management helps to identify noise sources and areas with high noise pollution, and potential mitigation strategies in urban planning. This paper reports work with a pilot scale system that can continuously collect noise data to assess noise levels accurately for real-time monitoring of environmental noise, focusing on hardware and software aspects and potential applications. The system permits the transfer of measurement data to the central server computer, with storage and display there, with the code written using Python. This system includes Web integration, with open source technologies to provide data access, and is based on Wi-Fi communication and a Control Card with Wi-Fi technology. © 2023 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

It is expected to be pervasive sensors to integrate physical and digital world. Low-latency and wide-covering networks are hence urged, which lead to costly infrastructure. Maritime shipping plays a pivotal role in the global transportation system, providing safety and cost-effectiveness. However, it encounters numerous challenges, including port congestion, delivery delays, complex paperwork, unreliable reports on hazardous materials, and difficulties in tracing containers. To address these issues and mitigate risks associated with the transportation of hazardous goods, researchers have explored the implementation of blockchain technology in the maritime sector. Blockchain offers decentralization, transparency, and auditability of transactions, as well as the ability to trace and track cargo, particularly hazardous materials. Despite its potential, there is limited research available on the practical implementation of blockchain for hazardous material traceability. This research paper aims to investigate the application of blockchain technology in enhancing hazardous material traceability in seaports, contributing to the growing body of knowledge regarding blockchain's potential in this area and providing valuable insights for future research and practical implementations. Moreover, the paper suggests a preliminary framework for an optimized blockchain algorithm for hazardous material traceability. The main findings highlight the significant potential of blockchain technology in improving traceability of hazardous materials in seaports. Real-time tracking and monitoring of hazardous materials from origin to destination can be achieved through blockchain's distributed nature, reducing the risk of data manipulation or fraud. The immutability of blockchain records ensures the integrity and accuracy of critical data related to material composition, handling procedures, and safety certifications. Furthermore, blockchain's decentralized control allows for collaborative traceability in seaports, involving stakeholders such as port authorities, shipping companies, regulatory bodies, and manufacturers. This paper discusses the optimization of hyperparameters of the Multilayer Feedforward (MLF) Artificial Neural Network (ANN), for Automatic Incident Detection (AID) within freeway systems. The MLF model was developed and tested using simulated data generated from VISSIM traffic simulation software. The optimized hyperparameters include the number of hidden layers, the size of hidden layers, the learning rate, momentum, error epsilon, and training cycles. To reduce computational time, a stepwise approach was adopted to optimize these hyperparameters. The model's performance was evaluated based on the Fscore, which is the harmonic mean of the recall and precision metrics. This evaluation metric was used because the AID is an imbalanced binary classification problem, where normal instances are the majority class and incident instances are the minority class. The results showed that optimizing the hyperparameters of the MLF model resulted in a 0.79% improvement in the F-score of the model and a 0.32% improvement in the overall accuracy of the model. The near-optimal hyperparameters for the MLF model were determined to be 1 hidden layer with 35 neurons, a learning rate of 0.015, momentum of 0.9, an error epsilon of 1.00E-10, and 1000 training cycles. The study provides insights into optimizing the hyperparameters of ANNs for AID applications in traffic management systems, which can help improve the performance of such systems. The optimized model can be utilized by Traffic Management Centres (TMCs) to detect incidents accurately and in a timely manner, thereby reducing the negative impacts of traffic incidents and ensuring safe and efficient travel for drivers. © 2023 Computers and Industrial engineering. The search for novel multi-functional material has been on the rise for the past decades. These materials ought to possess flexible structures and tunable properties in order to be utilized for a variety of applications. Perovskite materials are predominantly used in solar cell applications due to their broad absorption spectrum, long carrier lifetime, and long transport distance of electrons and holes. Nevertheless, their unique and tunable properties allow for their utilization in a wide range of applications. In this work, a review on the application of perovskite materials in hydrogen production, supercapacitors, and optoelectronic devices is presented. The role of perovskite in the improvement of said applications is investigated, and future outlook and remarks are presented. This paper highlights the potential utilization of perovskite material outside the scope of photoelectric devices and solar cells. © 2023 IEEE.

In this study, nerve conduits of chitosan and collagen composites with biocompatibility and biodegradability were fabricated. The effects of material composition and surface morphology on the axonal growth and directionality of rat epinephric pheochromocytoma PC12 were investigated. The cells were separated by a PDMS structure to simulate nerve injury, and the growth of axons of PC12 cells was observed under the separation of large gaps. At the same time, mitochondria extracted from osteosarcoma cybrid cells (C2-GFP) were added to the culture to investigate the effect of healthy mitochondria on axon differentiation and growth. The experimental results showed that the chitosan-collagen composite film can promote the growth of PC12 axons more effectively than the pure chitosan film. Cell culture results at different groove widths also showed that smaller grooves resulted in more axon numbers and longer axon lengths. Nerve injury simulation experiments showed that the nerve repair could be almost completed after 12 days of culture. Copyright © 2024 by ASME.

Population-based computational intelligence algorithms are natural candidates for parallelization and have been utilized to solve a variety of difficult and complex real-world problems. The gray wolf optimizer (GWO) is one of these algorithms. It is a metaheuristic that simulates the leadership hierarchy and hunting mechanism of gray wolves in the wild and has been used successfully to solve several hard optimization problems. However, the study of its applicability to the solution of nonlinear equation systems, which is arguably the most difficult class of numerical problems, is still quite incipient and needs to be better accessed and verified, particularly in the case of large-scale systems of nonlinear equations, which have not been considered until now and whose resolution difficulty increases with the number of equations they contain. This paper presents a new and efficient GPU-based massively parallel implementation of the gray wolf optimizer algorithm for solving large-scale optimization problems. The proposed parallelization of the GWO algorithm is illustrated by its application to solving large systems of nonlinear equations, a class of problems that appear and have great importance in different fields of pure and applied sciences and engineering. The GPU-accelerated version of GWO was implemented in Julia and tested on a GeForce RTX 3090 GPU with 24 GB GDDR6X VRAM and 10 496 CUDA cores using a set of hard, scalable systems of nonlinear equations with dimensions ranging from 500 to 2000. The obtained results, with average speedups between 69.91× and 241.54× , show the efficiency of the proposed GPU-based acceleration of the GWO algorithm. © 2023 IEEE.
