With the advent of new and promising cancer therapies, and with increased interest in precision medicine, there is an urgent need to develop non-invasive technologies that evaluate heterogeneity in treatment response. We demonstrate an 8-plex imaging platform based on surface enhanced resonance Raman scattering nanoparticles (SERRS NPs) to monitor the expression of 4 immunomarkers before and after treatment with checkpoint blockade therapy with anti-CTLA4 and anti-PD-1 antibodies in immunotherapy models of colon (CT26) and breast (4T1) cancers. We found that CT26 tumors showed an early treatment response, while the typically refractory 4T1 tumors demonstrated an unexpected treatment response, suggesting that the nanoparticles may have synergistically contributed to the treatment. Serial imaging of multiple markers during therapy can help predict treatment efficacy and uncover new theranostic adjuvants.

Air conditioning in general and cooling in particular are the biggest energy sinks among all electricity consumers. Mitigating energy needs of this sector by active or passive means is a necessity. This paper offers a comprehensive review of various cooling technologies for large scale applications and compares them in terms of economy, environmental footprint and most importantly, energy requirements. There is a main focus on the potential of using expansion cooling, which is defined in conjunction with cooling effects generated during the expansion process of a gas. The interest in such cooling technology stems from the double benefit of utilizing a large-scale compressed air energy storage (CAES) system that can also provide cooling via the expansion of air. This consequently manifests in reducing the electrical demand required for cooling applications. Such a concept is beneficial for hot climates, where most of the electrical demand is reserved for offsetting the cooling load. © 2023 The Author(s)

Chemical additives to perovskite precursors constitute a predominant route to passivate defects in perovskite films and improve carrier charge dynamics. In this work, ionic liquids (ILs) with chloride and iodide anions are used as additives for bulk passivation of perovskite films. The ionic liquids in the form of 1‑butyl‑4-methylpyradinium iodide (IL-I) and 1-ethylimidazolium chloride (IL-Cl) are mixed individually with a precursor of Cesium Formamidinium Lead Triiodide and Methylammonium Chloride (CsFAPbI3−MACl). The decay of charge carriers within the perovskite film before and after passivation with ILs was measured by Time Resolved Photoluminescence Spectroscopy (TRPL). The effect of added ILs on the recombination rate of the photocarriers was investigated by analyzing the decay of the TRPL signal in all samples. The average lifetimes obtained within one day of preparations were 79 ns, 73 ns and 275 ns for pristine perovskite, IL-I passivated perovskite and IL-Cl passivated perovskite films, respectively. These values show that the presence of the IL with chloride anion greatly improves the average lifetime of the charge carrier by around 250%, while IL with iodide anion decreased the lifetime by 32% as compared with the pristine perovskite sample. This finding renders the IL-Cl passivated perovskite films as a valuable resource in applications ranging from photoelectric to hydrogen generation devices. © 2023

In the prosthetic field, quantifying interfacial pressure distribution between the amputee's residual limb and the socket's internal environment is imperative for developing new technologies. However, the commercially available pressure sensors have several disadvantages, namely external power supply requirements, low stability, high cost, and complexities related to integrating the sensor system into prosthetic devices. Herein, we propose a self-powered triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) based flexible tactile sensor array system to monitor prosthetic socket internal pressure distribution in real-time. The proposed sensor consists of biocompatible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer and polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofiber membranes as triboelectric materials. The biodegradable PCL nanofiber membrane, fabricated via a scalable and cost-effective electrospinning process, possesses a high surface area-to-volume ratio, facilitating enhanced charge generation during triboelectrification. The as-fabricated TENG-based tactile sensor is highly stable up to 10,000 cycles. Furthermore, the voltage of the tactile sensor is independent of different temperature and humidity values, demonstrating the stability of the sensor under various environmental conditions. Finally, we successfully integrated the tactile sensor array within a prosthetic device to monitor real-time pressure distribution inside the prosthetic socket during gait simulation. We believe that the proposed novel design provides a new dimension for the rapid development of self-powered, low-cost, and highly stable pressure monitoring systems with considerable potential for commercialization. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd

Structural control of landslide disasters in Karangmoncol, Purbalingga Regency, Central Java

Landslide is one of the annual natural disasters that occur in the Karangmoncol area, especially during the rainy season. Karangmoncol is located in the central part of Java Island, which is a mountainous area with steep slopes. How the geological structure affects the occurrence of landslides is the objective of this study. Field data of the research include the dimensions of the landslide, the constituent rocks and measurements of the joints. The dimensions and direction of the landslide are drawn on a topographic map. The types of rocks constituent and the direction of the joints/fractures are also drawn on the map, so that the relationship between fracture structures, soil/rock types and landslides in the Karangmoncol area is known. The geological structures in the Karangmoncol area are in the form of bedding planes, shear-fractures, tentional fractures, and intrusional contacts. Intensive layering and joint structures are found in the volcanic sandstones of the Halang Formation. These structural fractures accelerate the weathering of volcanic sandstones to form thick soil. The intrusion of younger sill or dyke type andesite rocks creates a zone of alteration/mineralization of rock and creates a load on the underlying claystone. These main things are internal factors that cause the phenomenon of landslides in the Karangmoncol area.

The study aims to develop an abnormal body temperature probability (ABTP) model for dairy cattle, utilizing environmental and physiological data. This model is designed to enhance the management of heat stress impacts, providing an early warning system for farm managers to improve dairy cattle welfare and farm productivity in response to climate change. The study employs the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) algorithm to analyze environmental and physiological data from 320 dairy cattle, identifying key factors influencing body temperature anomalies. This method supports the development of various models, including the Lyman Kutcher-Burman (LKB), Logistic, Schultheiss, and Poisson models, which are evaluated for their ability to predict abnormal body temperatures in dairy cattle effectively. The study successfully validated multiple models to predict abnormal body temperatures in dairy cattle, with a focus on the temperature-humidity index (THI) as a critical determinant. These models, including LKB, Logistic, Schultheiss, and Poisson, demonstrated high accuracy, as measured by the AUC and other performance metrics such as the Brier score and Hosmer–Lemeshow (HL) test. The results highlight the robustness of the models in capturing the nuances of heat stress impacts on dairy cattle. The research develops innovative models for managing heat stress in dairy cattle, effectively enhancing detection and intervention strategies. By integrating advanced technologies and novel predictive models, the study offers effective measures for early detection and management of abnormal body temperatures, improving cattle welfare and farm productivity in changing climatic conditions. This approach highlights the importance of using multiple models to accurately predict and address heat stress in livestock, making significant contributions to enhancing farm management practices. © The Author(s) 2024.

Diverse microbes utilize redox shuttles to exchange electrons with their environment through mediated extracellular electron transfer (EET), supporting anaerobic survival. Although mediated EET has been leveraged for bioelectrocatalysis for decades, fundamental questions remain about how these redox shuttles are reduced within cells and their role in cellular bioenergetics. Here, we integrate genome editing, electrochemistry, and systems biology to investigate the mechanism and bioenergetics of mediated EET in Escherichia coli, elusive for over two decades. In the absence of alternative electron sinks, the redox cycling of 2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone (HNQ) via the cytoplasmic nitroreductases NfsB and NfsA enables E. coli respiration on an extracellular electrode. E. coli also exhibits rapid genetic adaptation in the outer membrane porin OmpC, enhancing HNQ-mediated EET levels coupled to growth. This work demonstrates that E. coli can grow independently of classic electron transport chains and fermentation, unveiling a potentially widespread new type of anaerobic energy metabolism. © 2025 Elsevier Inc.

Purpose: Early diagnosis of ICU-acquired weakness can support the ICU team in applying appropriate interventions which may lead to better results at clinical and functional outcomes. Thus, interest has increased in non-invasive and more feasible methods to diagnose neuromuscular dysfunction, such as the stimulus electrodiagnosis test (SET) and strength-duration test (SDT). The aim of the present study was to assess the agreement of the SET and SDT carried out automatically using an innovative method. Methods: We performed a prospective observational study to determine the agreement of SET and SDT, performed automatically using a biofeedback circuit to detect muscle contractions, comprised of an accelerometer module connected to an electrical stimulator. These tests were applied in healthy and critically ill participants. Results: Twenty-one participants were analyzed in the study, and 168 assessments of SET and SDT were performed. The Bland-Altman analysis of automatic SET and SDT in the control group showed a low bias of −25 (95% CI, −94.3 to 44.3 μs) and 0.6 (95% CI, −1.9 to 3.1 μC) respectively. In the critically ill group, automatic SET and SDT presented a low bias of −104.5 (95% CI, −1716 to 1507μs) and −12.6 (95% CI, −119.4 to 94.1 μC) respectively. Conclusions: We demonstrated that an innovative method to carry out SET and SDT automatically presents low agreement bias and good to excellent reliability. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to The Brazilian Society of Biomedical engineering.

Large-scale cyber attacks using IoT devices have increased in recent years. One of the strategies to deal with this problem is the use of penetration test techniques. The aim of this study was to develop a vulnerability assessment for an IoT M2M node that uses GSM technology. A test scenario was designed consisting of a GMS network created using USRP N210 and OpenBTS radios in a multicell configuration. An IoT-GSM node was designed from a sim8001 radio module, used in several M2M devices. The IoT node stores the measurements of the radio bases operational parameters that make up the GSM network. An algorithm for controlling an attacking base radio was designed using the OpenBTS API, which allows the deployment of a “man in the middle” attack. The entire test deployment can be carried out remotely. Analysis of the results of the measurements obtained lets us understand the attack's behavior in detail and determine the IoT-GSM node's vulnerability. The results obtained show the potential of SDR and OpenBTS technology as penetration test tools to analyze vulnerabilities of IoT systems.
