Palm vein recognition has relevant advantages in comparison with most traditional biometrics, such as high security and recognition performance. In recent years, CNN-based models for vascular biometrics have improved the state-of-the-art, but they have the disadvantage of requiring a larger number of samples for training. In this context, the generation of synthetic databases is very effective for evaluating the performance of biometric systems. The present study proposes a new perspective of a transfer learning approach for palm vein recognition, evaluating the use of Synthetic-sPVDB and NS-PVDB synthetic databases for pre-training deep learning models and validating their performance on real databases. The proposed methodology comprises two different branches as inputs. Firstly, a synthetic database is used to train a CNN model, and in the second branch, a real database is used to finetune and evaluate the performance of the resulting pre-trained model. For the feature learning process, we implemented two end-to-end CNN architectures based on AlexNet and Resnet32. The experimental results on the most representative public datasets have shown the usefulness of using palm vein synthetic images for transfer learning, outperforming the state-of-the-art results.

Nickel and cobalt layered double hydroxide (NiCo-LDH) is one of promising active materials of battery supercapacitor hybrids (BSH) as the clean renewable energy. Designing composites and doping heteroatoms are widely applied to solve poor conductivity, serious agglomeration, and structural defects of NiCo-LDH. In this work, manganese cobalt LDH (MnCo-LDH) is firstly incorporated in sulfur-doped NiCo-LDH (S-NiCo-LDH) on Ni foam (NF) via the hydrothermal process as a binder-free electrode of BSH. Favorable morphology with nanowires covered on the vertical grown nanosheet array is successfully designed for MnCo-LDH/S-NiCo-LDH with the large specific surface area and the well-established pore structure. The specific capacitances (CF) of 681.4, 953.9 and 1581.3 F/g are respectively achieved for the NiCo-LDH, S-NiCo-LDH, MnCo-LDH/S-NiCo-LDH electrodes at the current density of 1 A/g. The larger CF value of MnCo-LDH/S-NiCo-LDH is due to larger conductivity and effective charge transfer paths. A BSH assembled using MnCo-LDH/S-NiCo-LDH/NF and graphene/NF electrodes shows a wide potential window of 1.6 V, a large maximum energy density of 46.6 Wh/kg at 0.8 kW/kg, and an excellent cyclic stability with the CF retention of 81% and the Coulombic efficiency higher than 87% after 10,000 times charge/discharge process at the current density of 7 A/g. © 2022

Objective: Limited hippocampal radiofrequency thermocoagulation (RFTC) for patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy was associated with good short-term seizure control and few complications. We aimed to demonstrate the neuropsychologic outcomes and assess the prognostic factors of long-term seizure control in these patients. Methods: We included all patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy who underwent limited hippocampal RFTC from January 2016 to December 2020. Clinical data of age, sex, seizure control before and after operation were all corrected. Pre- and postoperative neuropsychologic function including full-scale intelligence quotient (FSIQ), memory quotient, and the Mini-Mental State Examination was used. Results: Thirty-one patients (17 female and 14 male) with a mean epilepsy duration of 22.3 years and seizure frequency of 5.7 times per month were included. The intraoperative seizure rate was 19.3%, and a higher preoperative seizure frequency (P = 0.001) and longer duration of epilepsy (P = 0.042) were associated with the occurrence of intraoperative seizures. The postoperative FSIQ scores were significantly better than preoperative scores (mean 92.1 vs. 89.7, P = 0.014). Nine patients (29%) who underwent limited hippocampal RFTC were seizure-free at 1 year of follow-up. Responders represented 58% (n = 18) of patients at 1 year. The mean follow-up period was 34.7 ± 13.3 months. Five patients remained seizure free and 13 patients are still responders at the last follow-up visits. Long-term seizure frequency was 2.32 ± 2.86 times per month. Conclusions: Limited hippocampal RFTC is a safe stereotactic minimal invasive procedure with good neuropsychologic outcome and acceptable efficacy of seizure reduction in appropriately selected patients. © 2023 Elsevier Inc.

Individual recognition through palm vein authentication has gained the attention of the scientific community due to its high level of security. However, the algorithms for recognition are validated with a limited number of images due to the small number of subjects in public databases, making it challenging to implement deep learning-based methods and evaluate scalability for mass identification. Creating a large-scale database of real palm vein images is laborious in terms of time, security, and cost. In other biometrics, such as fingerprint recognition, synthetic images greatly enhance the accuracy of developed techniques. Although the reasons behind palm vein patterns are not fully understood, there is evidence that geometric characterization and anatomical study allow for the proposal of reasonable assumptions to create realistic vein pattern images through models. Therefore, this study aims to generate synthetic palm vein images by modeling the vascular structure. Thus, our proposal will favor future research that requires the generation of large-scale databases to provide reliable and scalable solutions to biometric recognition tasks of individuals with palm veins.

Finite element modeling of the seepage flow of water under concrete dams with sheet piles

A finite element model (FEM) is developed to analyze the problem of seepage flow of water under concrete dams with sheet piles. The model was developed using the finite element software ANSYS, based on equivalent thermal analysis and correlation with seepage performance. The issue of water seepage under concrete dams is addressed mathematically. In this study, the effects of several parameters on porous soil seepage velocity distribution are studied. Sheet pile parameters were varied in depth, location and number of sheet piles. The sheet pile with variables of 0, 1, 2, and 3 pieces, location of 0, 0.5, and 1 of dam width, and the depth of the sheet piles varying as 2 and 4 m, respectively. The developed FE models were verified by a previous study and used for further parametric studies. It was concluded that increased sheet pile depth reduces the seepage flow. In addition, the location of the sheet pile is an important factor in seepage velocity, as it might increase the flow away from dam toe in a similar fashion to dam depth effects. Moreover, increasing the number of sheet piles further reduces the seepage velocity in comparison to usage of a single sheet pile. The sheet pile configuration and parameters are integrated with each other and each factor influence the others, resulting in various seepage flow patterns. This study demonstrates that FE modeling can effectively predict seepage flow under concrete dams with sheet piles.

Simulation on directed graphs is an important method for understanding the dynamics in the systems where connectivity graphs contain cycles. Discrete Stochastic Heterogeneous Simulator (DiSH) is one of the simulation tools with wide application, which uses regulator values to calculate state updates of regulated elements. Here we present a new simulation approach DiSH-trend which also takes into account the trends in regulating elements. We demonstrate the features of trend-based regulation, as well as hybrid regulation, which is a combination of the trend- and level-based approaches. The modeling capabilities are demonstrated on a small toy model, showcasing different functionalities. Real-world capabilities are demonstrated on a larger network model of food insecurity in the Ethiopian region Oromia. Adding trend-based regulation to models results in increased modeling flexibility, and hybrid regulation improves qualitative dynamic behavior prediction. With appropriate data, DiSH-trend becomes a powerful tool for exploring intervention strategies.

Probabilistic power flow (PPF) analysis is usually applied for evaluating the effects of uncertain parameters on power system performances. This paper presents a technique to enhance the arbitrary polynomial chaos expansion (aPCE) based PPF analysis technique when applying to system with many uncertain parameters. The proposed method represents a power system response as low rank approximation (LRA). In addition, the principle component analysis (PCA) is applied to reduce the number of uncertain parameters and also de-correlate them. This combination enables the proposed method to perform PPF of the power system having large number of uncertain parameters. Based on preliminary numerical results on the modified IEEE 57-bus system, it can be noticed that the proposed modified method is able to find accurate statistical characteristics of the responses but uses less computation time compared to the MCS based PPF analysis.

Autophagy is a major degradation process that degrades and recycles cytoplasmic materials through lysosome for maintaining cellular homeostasis. Dysregulated autophagy is linked with numerous human diseases including cancer. Autophagy marker protein B-cell lymphoma-2 interacting protein 1 (Beclin-1) is essential for autophagosome initiation and maturation. Recently, Ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase 11 (USP11) has been reported to promote or inhibit autophagy without identification of any direct target. Here through biochemical reaction in vitro, we demonstrate that USP11 directly interacts with Beclin-1. Both in vitro and in vivo de-ubiquitination assays revealed that USP11 de-ubiquitinates Beclin-1. USP11-mediated de-ubiquitination stabilized Beclin-1 and enhanced the formation of the autophagy-specific class III phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase complexes 1 and 2, thereby promoting autophagy. Together, our results demonstrated that USP11 promotes autophagy under unperturbed conditions by de-ubiquitinating and stabilizing Beclin-1 which may serve as a therapeutic target for autophagy-related diseases.

Application of incremental dynamic analysis for seismic assessment of existing building structures

History records that Aceh Province has been hit by earthquakes several times, including the largest one that recorded in 1983, then on December 26, 2004 with a magnitude of 9.3 SR. This earthquake devastated the city of Banda Aceh which was followed by a tsunami. Finally, in 2016, there was an earthquake that resulted in severe damage in the Pidie Jaya district. The potential for a large earthquake in Banda Aceh City requires that the buildings to have good resistance to seismic risk. In the context of seismic performance assessment of buildings, Incremental Dynamic Analysis (IDA) can be applied to investigate structural response. Incremental Dynamic Analysis is a method of parametric analysis of structural performance using the applied earthquake load response. In this analysis, the structural model is created with one or more seismic load records multiplied by a scale factor for various levels of earthquake intensity. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the seismic performance of the existing building by applying the IDA method and to obtain an overview of the structural risk due to variations in earthquake intensity that may occur. The method of Incremental Dynamic Analysis (IDA) is applied to predict and estimate the performance of the structure using several ground motions. The existing buildings that are the main focus of this study include the Tsunami Vertical Evacuation (TVE) of Lambung, TVE Alu Deah Teungoh, TVE TDMRC, SDN 48 Banda Aceh, SMPN 11 Banda Aceh, Baiturrahim Ulee Lheu Mosque, and the Subulussalam Punge Mosque. The resulting set of IDA curves was further analyzed to assess the behavior of the building structure that occurred. The result of the analysis is the distribution of structural response expressed in one or more IDA curves as a function of earthquake intensity.
