As many of the elderly are prone to dysphagia, preventing aspirations during mealtime assistance is a huge concern, especially for institutions operated with limited staff. Two of the main course of actions that are taken usually to prevent aspiration are the altering of bolus consistency and altering of the swallowing posture. To assist prevention of pneumonia, we have been developing a smartphone-based wearable technology that can evaluate swallowing ability in real-time. In this paper we will introduce modified version of Swallwoscope adding a posture detection system and a remote swallowing activity visualisation system to our previous work. We will evaluate the accuracy of the proposed posture detection system and also evaluate the feasibility of our device to determine bolus consistency. We plan to integrate these components in a network-based framework to share the relevant medical information within the community to enhance safety and pleasure of eating.

An approach for robustness analysis of non-dominated solutions to a multi-objective optimization model of an energy management system aggregator (EMSA) in face of uncertainty is presented. The EMSA is an intermediary entity between households and the System Operator (SO), capable of contributing to balance load and supply, and therefore coping with the intermittency of renewable energy sources (RES) and facilitating a load follows supply strategy in a Smart Grid environment. Household clusters provide load flexibility to satisfy system services requested by the SO, involving decreasing or increasing load in specific time slots. The EMSA multi-objective optimization model considers the maximization of profits and the minimization of the imbalance between the amounts of load flexibility provided by the end-user clusters to satisfy SO requests, taking into account revenues from the SO and payments to the clusters. A hybrid evolutionary approach combining Genetic Algorithms (GA) with Differential Evolution (DE) has been designed to deal with this model, and its behaviour subject to different scenarios of uncertainty is evaluated. The robustness analysis of non-dominated solutions produced by the hybrid evolutionary approach is based on the degree of robustness concept, taking into account the changes in the performance of the objective functions when small perturbations of the model nominal coefficients occur.

Organic-inorganic melting gel coatings were applied to titanium alloy substrates to decrease their corrosion and extend their lifetime in an electrochemical application. Melting gels containing phenyl substitutions were coated onto the substrates. The ratio of diphenyl dimethoxysilane (DphdMS) to methanol was varied to change the thickness of the coatings. The coatings were inspected visually to see that there is good adhesion between the coating and the substrate. Nanoindenter tests were performed to determine hardness.

Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) is a degenerative disease of the retina that leads to vision loss. Retinal prostheses are being developed in order to restore functional vision in patients suffering from RP. We conducted in-vivo experiments in order to identify strategies to efficiently stimulate the retina. We electrically stimulated the retina and measured electrically evoked potentials (EERs) from the superior colliculus of rats. We compared the strength of EERs when voltage-controlled and current-controlled pulses of varying pulse width and charge levels were applied to the retina. In addition to comparing EER strength, we evaluated improvement in power efficiency afforded by a high surface area platinum-iridium material. Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). In other countries, the difference in mean annual improvement between these periods ranged from –0·01 years in Iceland (0·19 years [95% UI 0·16 to 0·21] vs 0·18 years [0·09 to 0·26]), to –0·18 years in England (0·25 years [0·24 to 0·25] vs 0·07 years [0·06 to 0·08]). Currently, thousands of tons of metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) are produced and utilized in nano-enabled devises, personal care, medicinal, food and agricultural products. It is generally accepted that the reaction compounds and the techniques used in industrial production of MNPs are not environmentally friendly. The green synthesis has been proposed as an alternative to reduce the use of hazardous compounds and harsh reaction conditions in the production of MNPs. In this endeavor, investigators have used organic compounds, microbes, plants and plant-derived materials as reducing agents. Research papers are published every year, and each one of them stresses the benefits of the green approach and the advantages over the traditional syntheses. However, after almost two decades since the explosion of the reports about the new approach, the commercial production of green-synthesized nanoparticles does not seem to find a way to scale up commercial production. This review includes descriptions of the traditional and green synthesis and applications of MNPs and highlights the factors limiting the use of plant-based synthesis as a real alternative to the traditional synthesis of MNPs. © 2016, Springer International Publishing Switzerland.

Underground production scheduling has typically been a task completed manually or with heuristic-based commercial software. Applying traditional optimization methods for solving open pit mine scheduling problems to underground settings has had limited success due to their complex resource and precedence structure. The Bienstock-Zuckerberg algorithm is a method to determine linear programming relaxation solutions for precedence-constrained knapsack problems. We tailor this algorithm for underground mine scheduling, obtain integer solutions via heuristics guided by these linear relaxations, and demonstrate the effectiveness of our techniques on real-life data sets containing multiple underground mines, time fidelities, and levels of accuracy (strategic and tactical).

In this paper we present a controller that achieves global input-to-state stabilty for a linear system of arbitrary relative degree, subjected to matched and unmatched disturbances. This controller combines the properties of a discontinous term, and a linear one, enforcing a conventional sliding mode using only partial state information. A direct and simple way of choosing the gains for this controller is also provided. © 2015 EUCA.

Background: Flood is one of the most destructive natural disasters of climate change effects in West Africa. Flood risk occurrence is a combination of natural and anthropogenic factors, which calls for a better understanding of its spatial extent. The aim of this paper is to identify, and map areas of flood risk in Abidjan district. Results: This work is based on the integration of multi-criteria data including slope, drainage density, type of soil, Isohyet, population density, land use and sewer system density within ArcGIS interface. The resulting AHP flood risk map shows that areas under high and very high flood risk covers 34 % of the study area. Conclusion: The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method used as a multi-criteria analysis allowed the integration of several elements under two criteria, hazards and vulnerability, for flood risk assessment and mapping. Results revealed that, Abidjan district is heavily exposed to the risk of flooding. Eight out of thirteen (8/13) municipalities within the district are at a high risk of flooding which calls for decision makers to effectively develop strategies for future flood occurrences within the Abidjan district (South of Côte d’Ivoire). © 2016, Danumah et al.
