Intracellular delivery of therapeutic proteins has increased advantages over current small-molecule drugs and gene therapies, especially in therapeutic efficacies for a broad spectrum of diseases. Hence, developing the protein therapeutics approach provides a needed alternative. Here, we designed a mesoporous silica nanoparticle (MSN)-mediated protein delivery approach and demonstrated effective intracellular delivery of the denatured superoxide dismutase (SOD) protein, overcoming the delivery challenges and achieving higher enzymatic activity than native SOD-conjugated MSNs. The denatured SOD-conjugated MSN delivery strategy provides benefits of reduced size and steric hindrance, increased protein flexibility without distorting its secondary structure, exposure of the cell-penetrating peptide transactivator of transcription for enhanced efficient delivery, and a change in the corona protein composition, enabling cytosolic delivery. After delivery, SOD displayed a specific activity around threefold higher than in our previous reports. Furthermore, the in vivo biosafety and therapeutic potential for neuron therapy were evaluated, demonstrating the biocompatibility and the effective antioxidant effect in Neuro-2a cells that protected neurite outgrowth from paraquat-induced reactive oxygen species attack. This study offers an opportunity to realize the druggable possibility of cytosolic proteins using MSNs. © 2022 American Chemical Society.

Improving the charge diffusion length and water oxidation kinetics of bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) is essential to achieve better photoelectrochemical catalytic ability for water oxidation. Establishing heterojunctions and incorporating co-catalysts with BiVO4 create facile charge transfer paths and generate more water oxidation reactions. In this work, nickel molybdenum oxide (NM) and carbon quantum dot (CQD) are firstly deposited on BiVO4 by hydrothermal and soaking processes to design an efficient co-catalyst/photocatalyst system for water oxidation. The depositing amount of CQD is optimized to balance contributions of CQD and NM as the hole sink and the light-to-electron generator, respectively. The highest photocurrent densities of 2.2 and 3.9 mA/cm2 are achieved for BiVO4/NM/CQD in the electrolyte without and with hole scavenger, respectively. The BiVO4 electrode only shows a photocurrent density of 1.2 mA/cm2 in the electrolyte without hole scavenger. The best photoelectrochemical catalytic ability of BiVO4/NM/CQD is approached by the reduced charge-transfer resistance and charge recombination as well as the enhancement on carrier densities. The excellent long-term stability with the photocurrent retention of 90% under illumination for 24 h is also obtained for BiVO4/NM/CQD. This study opens a blueprint on designing efficient catalysts for water oxidation by incorporating heterojunction and co-catalyst materials simultaneously. © 2023 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC

The paper investigates the correlation between solar irradiance and sunlit hours for the city of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. This correlation is a strong function of the weather conditions, and is vital for the design and operation of solar energy systems. The Angstrom Model is a straightforward tool that establishes a linear relationship where the model parameters b and a (slope and y-intercept, respectively) are evaluated through plotting of experimental measurements. Wind speed and relative humidity are collected to interpret their effect on the quality of incident solar radiation. The model takes into consideration winter and summer months of the year 2021, hence it provides a complete weather pattern for the year. With continuous data logging, the model will be developed to predict the weather patterns of the city of Sharjah. © 2022 IEEE.

Bismuth vanadate with suitable band edges is one of the efficient photocatalysts for water oxidation. Establishing heterojunction can improve electron diffusion lengths and photocatalytic ability of BiVO4. In this work, nickel molybdenum oxide (Ni–Mo–O) and BiVO4 heterojunction is established by the hydrothermal process with different nickel to molybdenum precursor ratios. The Ni–Mo–O/BiVO4 electrode is applied as photoanodes for water oxidation. The growth mechanism of Ni–Mo–O on BiVO4 surface is proposed. The Ni–Mo–O deposition amount is optimized regarding to light absorbance and charger transportation. The largest photocurrent density of 1.72 mA/cm2 at 1.23 VRHE is obtained for the optimal NiMoO4/BiVO4 electrode (NM12) in the electrolyte without hole scavenger, while the pure BiVO4 electrode only shows a photocurrent density of 0.90 mA/cm2. The NM12 electrode even presented an impressive photocurrent density of 5.39 mA/cm2 at 1.23 VRHE in the electrolyte with the hole scavenger, owing to the abundant active sites and higher light absorbance as well as the favorable synergistic effects from its suitable Ni to Mo ratio. The NM12 electrode also shows excellent long-term stability with the photocurrent retention of 83% after illumination for 6500 s. This work opens a blueprint for establishing a novel heterojunction with the adjustable metal ratio and coverage on BiVO4. © 2023 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC

Energy supply and demand are at the core of one of the pressing problems worldwide as the present energy production is still dominated by non-renewable resources. The need to meet the goals for the climate has motivated the energy sector to embrace cleaner and greener electro-energy systems. Proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells, also known as polymer-electrolyte membrane fuel cells, have lately attracted more attention from various sectors due to their exceptional advantages, including high theoretical efficiency, low operating temperatures, and low-to-zero emissions. Therefore, they can be successfully used in a variety of applications. Hence, a novel membrane that possesses adequate proton conductivity is required. Therefore, in this work, MXene was investigated as a potential proton conductor. MXene/PVDF based membrane was synthesized with different concentrations 3, 5, 8, 10, 13 and 15 wt.% respectively, and evaluated for their proton conduction using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The values of the conductivity obtained were:3.22× x10- 3, 6.2× x10-3, 0.025, 0.041, 3.77×10-3 and 4.2 ×10-3 S/cm, respectively. The results of this study show that the synthesized membranes in this work appear to be promising for PEM fuel cells applications. © 2023 Computers and Industrial engineering. All rights reserved.

In this paper, Graphene Aerogel (GA) is prepared and investigated for its potential employment for solar energy harvesting applications. GA can be applied in solar cells applications as an absorption material and as a catalyst for fuel cells. GA is characterized by its extraordinary electrical conductivity and mechanical strength, in addition to a large surface and a low density. The electrical, mechanical, thermal, and absorption characteristics of GA can be tuned depending on the manufacturing process. Hence, GA is utilized in a multitude of applications such as: supercapacitors, air purification, oil and dye absorption from water, and water waste treatment. GA is also an excellent candidate for superior electrodes. In addition, GA are environmentally friendly materials since they are 100% recyclable and do not produce any ozone-depleting compounds. In this paper, GA is synthesized, characterized, and assessed for solar energy harvesting applications with the aid of absorption and Cyclic voltammetry (CV) tests. Results show that GA has immense potential in solar application due to its low band gap and outstanding optical and electrochemical properties. © 2022 IEEE.

Effect of silver/zinc co-dopant on enhancing cytotoxicity and antibacterial property of spray pyrolyzed bioactive glasses

Owing to the advancement of bioactive materials, bioactive glasses (BGs) are progressively being recognized as promising choices in fields of bone and tissue engineering with their superior properties such as bioactivity and biocompatibility. However, their applications are limited by the fact that the material itself does not possess antibacterial properties. To address this limitation, antibacterial BGs with silver-zinc co-dopant were proposed and successfully synthesized via the one-step spray pyrolysis technique in this work. The phase composition, chemical composition, surface morphology, and nanoscale structures of the obtained BG specimens were characterized using X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Moreover, in-vitro bioactivity was assessed through immersion of the SBF solution, while the in-vitro antibacterial property was examined using Escherichia coli bacteria. Meanwhile, the viability of MC3T3-E1 osteoblast cells was evaluated using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay. Finally, the results showed positive effects of zinc addition, and the influence of silver and zinc dopants on the in-vitro bioactivity, antibacterial property, and cell viability were discussed. © 2024 The Author(s).
