Potential vibrational modes associated with diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) could be discerned by examining energy differences between correlated DIBs. Consequently, ≈ 103 higher correlated DIB pairs (r − σr ≥ 0.8, ≥ 12 sightlines) were extracted from the Apache Point Observatory DIB catalog, and their energy spacings computed. In this first macro exploratory step, a histogram possibly reveals chemical bond signatures of C≡C, C≡N, S−H, C−O, C=O, Si−H, N−H, C−H (aliphatic), C...C (in-ring), and aromatics (C−H stretch, C...C in-ring, oop C−H bending, and overtones). Continued research is required to (in)validate the histogram approach, mitigate noise, scrutinize maxima, break degeneracies, and converge upon an optimal framework. © 2025, CC BY.

In this paper we will offer a new symmetric-key cryptographic scheme which is based on the existence of exponentially distorted subgroups in arithmetic groups. Let : D → C be an integrable holomorphic function on the unit disk D and D : D → T(D) the corresponding Teichmüller disk in the universal Teichmüller space T(D). For a positive t it is known that D(t) → [µ] ∈ PMLb(D) as t → 1, where µ is a bounded measured lamination representing a point on the Thurston boundary of T(D). We extend this result by showing that D: D → T(D) extends as a continuous map from the closed disk D to the Thurston bordification. Solving the conjugacy decision problem via machine learning

Machine learning and pattern recognition techniques have been successfully applied to algorithmic problems in free groups. In this paper, we seek to extend these techniques to finitely presented non-free groups, with a particular emphasis on polycyclic and metabelian groups that are of interest to non-commutative cryptography. As a prototypical example, we utilize supervised learning methods to construct classifiers that can solve the conjugacy decision problem, i.e., determine whether or not a pair of elements from a specified group are conjugate. The accuracies of classifiers created using decision trees, random forests, and N-tuple neural network models are evaluated for several non-free groups. The very high accuracy of these classifiers suggests an underlying mathematical relationship with respect to conjugacy in the tested groups.20F10, 68T05 Copyright © 2017, The Authors. The relatively new and expansive Apache Point Observatory Catalog of Optical Diffuse Interstellar Bands was analyzed to identify novel correlations between diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) and optical reddening E(B − V), with a principal aim being to facilitate future identifications of the host molecular carriers. The following lines exhibit the highest Pearson r correlations in descending order (0.930 ≥ r ≥ 0.885), and are tied to DIBs featuring n ≥ 10 sightlines and possessing equivalent width uncertainties: λ (Å) ≃ 5236.27, 5793.24, 5797.18, 6449.27, 6795.26, 5948.87, 6113.22, 6860.02, 6059.34, 6520.74. Independent observations to confirm the preliminary trends are desirable, and extinction estimates could be subsequently inferred for targets by relying on longer-wavelength (NIR) photometric calibrations linked to a weighted subset of numerous DIBs. Lastly, several DIBs appear unassociated with E(B − V), thereby reaffirming that diverse carriers exist.

A majority of electricity generation in the US is produced by thermoelectric power plants which require a constant supply of water for cooling. Many of these plants eject large quantities of hot water that was used for cooling into an adjacent river - a phenomenon known as thermal pollution - causing harm to local ecosystems and aquatic life. Commonly, plants lie within interconnected river networks, whence thermal pollution from plants upstream is translated to plants dowstream, causing less-effective cooling, and decreases in efficiency. By default, plants are managed locally, and government regulations combating thermal pollution take the form of local river temperature constraints. We propose analyzing this situation regionally, seeking to balance the trade-off between power demand and required pollution minimization in a region. We first consider fractional variants of this problem where plants may operate at some fraction of their total capacity. We provide optimal poly-time algorithms for such cases. We show that the integer version of the problem - where plants are either fully on or off - is already NP-hard when the river network topology is a path graph. We provide a dynamic programming FPTAS in this case. We compare the results of our algorithms to baseline heuristics in simulation. © 2016 IEEE.
