Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). In other countries, the difference in mean annual improvement between these periods ranged from –0·01 years in Iceland (0·19 years [95% UI 0·16 to 0·21] vs 0·18 years [0·09 to 0·26]), to –0·18 years in England (0·25 years [0·24 to 0·25] vs 0·07 years [0·06 to 0·08]). In this study we investigate the recently introduced competition format for the top association football division in Poland (similar to one used in, e.g., Belgium and Kazakhstan). We compare it to the double round-robin tournament which is the most prevalent league for-mat among European leagues. In a simulation study we show that the new league format has better ability to determine the strongest competitor as the winner of a league as well as it yields higher correlation with theoretical latent teams' strength parameters in the model.

Multi-sensor based classification of professionals' activities plays a key role in ensuring the success of an his/her goals. In this paper we present the winning solution to the AAIA'15 Tagging Firefighter Activities at a Fire Scene data mining competition. The approach is based on a Random Forest classifier trained on an input data set with almost 5000 features describing the underlying time series of sensory data.

Non-linear energy harvesting system was project to enhance interaction to ambient vibration that is wide band and low power which difficult the design for resonant solution. To improve efficiency of a non-linear design it was project a control system based in optimal linear control (OLC). Applying numerical evaluations it was possible to analyze the kinetic energy from the system as also the resulting output voltage. As main result there was a considerable increase of output voltage due controlled system in comparison to open loop for the same excitation. © (2013) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Previous studies concerned with mobile financial services for the poor have been narrowly conceived, mainly depending on secondary data and focusing on technical design issues without having fully understood individuals' complex relationships and money practices. In order to contribute to this knowledge gap and inform mobile money system design, an exploratory case study investigated social relationships and social payment practices among rural individuals in Ethiopia. Key findings regarding their money exchange practices include: (1) secrecy and disclosure of money exchange practices (2) acceptance and or rejection of money gift for some reasons, (3) personalize money giving and accepting practices, and finally (4) separating and labeling of money based on its purpose and source. A qualitative exploratory research approach with key informant focus group discussions served as the primary means of information gathering. Copyright © 2012 ACM.

There is reasonable doubt that current arrangements for clinical training will sustain projected increased requirements for health education. It is evident that Simulation Education provides a solution to this sustainability problem, and the increasing sophistication of Virtual world technologies create opportunities to migrate elements from traditional to online models, thus addressing the issues of cost of access to traditional Simulation Centres. However, creating exciting online environments in isolation is insufficient in addressing the complex requirements of undergraduate health care training. The authors propose that by balancing the focus between cognitive reasoning structure and the need to establish an emotional connection, they have delivered a high quality, learner-centric online world that increases the "real world readiness" for undergraduates. Furthermore, by delivering the tool through a supportive online community of practice, the learner has a sustainable, continuous opportunity to practice essential skills in a safe environment before entering the clinical environment.

The paper introduces some challenges of the fast growing mortgage market in Poland, being also the next step of research presented in previous publications, showing the complete process of building and verifying three submodels for the internet mortgage market. The sub-models are described for three market situations, i.e. stable market, crisis, and boom, then the variables within the models are analyzed statistically (e.g. correlation level) and finally the models are verified. The paper presents the process of verification of submodel nr 3 (fast growing market) as an example of the verification process that was applied. The paper concludes with directions for further research in this area leading to the ultimate application of the proposed model in a real life prognosis process. © 2012 The authors and IOS Press. Landfill (TPA) Sukawinatan Palembang is an open dumping system which covers an area of 25 hectares. This system may bring an environmental damage to the surrounding area because it does not provide leachate treatment. Leachate is the landfill waste that dissolves many compounds that contain pollutants from both organic substances and heavy metal origin. This paper presents the results of laboratory analysis on samples of leachate as well as shallow groundwater from the surrounding area. The results were compared to established quality standards to evaluate whether the leachate has influenced the quality of the shallow groundwater in the surrounding area. The results show that there are some indications that the quality of groundwater has been polluted by the leachate of both organic substances and heavy metals produced by the Sukawinatan landfill.
